Oh how I hate coming to this movie theater. Every time I've come here there's always something bad that happens. Last time I went they were releasing the movie called the bye-bye man and there was a bunch of kids just overflowing the movie theater and then they ended up fighting. The bathrooms were dirty and the movie rooms are small. I don't recommend anyone to come to this movie theater unless you want to have a bad experience. read more

This is hands down the worst theater I've ever been to. Horrible sound. Horrible (and over priced) food. Got a $7 popcorn and it was filled half way. The theaters aren't well kept and are usually in a filthy state. For a Richmond staple theater you'd expect them to keep it a little bit more tidy. I don't want to exaggerate but it is actually like sitting in a metro station that you had to pay $30 to get into. If you're looking for a movie night, you're better off driving the extra 15 mins to AMC Midlothian. 0/5 Stars if I could. read more

I've been to Movieland several times, partially because I live across the street. The seats are relatively comfortable, and it's usually warm which is rare, as most cinemas want to freeze you to death. The prices are average, the staff is friendly, and the snacks are fresh. As far as the beer thing goes, if you want to go have a few drinks, go to a bar or a restaurant. The reason they won't allow the alcohol into the theater is that they can't hover over patrons to make sure a beverage isn't passed to minors, it's a liability issue. I love that they have midnight movies, and classic movies on sunday mornings. They even have Rocky Horror Picture Show with live cast every other weekend. As far as the people complaining of a smell, I bet you were in theater 2, which actually does have a smell, but I haven't noticed it anywhere else. read more

Went back since they are the ONLY theater in Richmond showing Hobbit in HFR, and the one in Hampton is showing it on a medium size theater. THey have it on 2 screens, the super tiny one that is a joke, and I can't believe they would show the most visually impressive movie ever on it. It really is the epitome of irony. THey also had in on Screen 15, one of the largest 2. The sound was very good, plenty loud, including the rear center. The screen is still not too big, but the HFR was stunning. The theater seems to be cleaned well, the concessions aren't too bad, and there was no HFR upcharge! It was a Sunday 11 am showing, and was $11 for 3D, which ain't exactly cheap, but par for the course. I did check other theaters, and again found 16 and 17 to have very little surround, but 14 and 15, the two big ones, did seem to have pretty good presentation. Do not go here unless you're too lazy to go to a real movie theater like regal short pump. The only reason I keep going back to this movie theater is for the convenience. Overall, this is a really bad movie theater. I'm a huge movie buff, I love going to see a movie every weekend and generally love the theater experience. After recently moving to Richmond, this had become my local movie theater location and that's the only thing it has going for it. When I went to see captain America civil war and neighbors 2, both times there was a smelly homeless looking man sleeping and snoring in both showings. I know he was smelly due to him sitting near me both times and homeless due to his clothing. And I'm not exaggerating, actually snoring. Both times we had to go to management so they could deal with it. When I went to see Star Wars the last Jedi on opening night, 5 min into the film the sound goes out during the opening battle scene and management comes in and tells us we all had to get up and Move to another theater. After getting there 2 hours early to get decent seats I lost those seats to people who had the worst seats in the theater originally. Seeing "the quiet place" this past weekend was one of the worst movie experiences I've ever had. There was a group of loud obnoxious teenagers who kept talking, yelling, throwing food, and using their cell phones (actually snapping photos with the flash on) throughout the entire movie. The best part is that there was a security guard standing in the theater but he wouldn't do or say anything. Why is there security if they aren't going to do anything when rude people like that are ruining the film for everyone? On top of all that. The insides of the theaters are generally dirty, walking to your seats you'll see trash and due to limited leg room (I'm 5'10) people will constantly be hitting the back of your seat. This place has probably the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I was the only person in line behind a gentleman who apparently was experiencing some sort of difficulty and after waiting several minutes I walked over to the self service kiosk, because it became very apparent that the employees here can only derive one guest at a time. After purchasing my tickets, the ticket guy walked away from his booth and I had to wait another several minutes for someone to check my tickets. Then stood in line for concessions... and this is my favorite part of the whole story.... I asked for a large popcorn, 2 small sprites and a small Dr.Pepper.. The first sprite she gave me, the outside was saturated in excess soda, I sent my daughter to go wipe the cup down and the cashiers statement to me was.. "yeah" sometimes that happens. When I got my dr.pepper there was NO ice in my cup, I asked her about the ice and she was like, "oh you want ice??, I wasn't sure if you were being cheap or not so I didn't give you ice." Excuse me?? What does that have to do with you not giving me ice? Her response "well you don't get free refills with that size". I'm sorry my kids are 8 & 9, if they need more soda that this I will a) by then more soda or b) buy them more soda?!?? I had also gotten 2 bags of candy, so I'm not entirely sure why she thought I was being cheap?! Who wants to pay 5.00 for a small bag of candy! It was the worse, I was running late for the movie so I couldn't complain to the manager but I will not voluntarily go here again! read more

These geniuses dont even know how to use sequential numbers for their theaters. Your ticket says #21? No problem, go across the street and see 1,2,3,4 then you simply have to know and remember that there are 17 theaters in the main building, and subtract 17 from 21 to get #4. Want concessions? Love the prices. They need a mobile kiosk for those who don't want to wait in line for a movie. And the line is slow moving. I would have given them a 5 star rating but the lines at the concession stands were long as well. I just opted to wait until the previews of the movie started to see if that would ease the pain of the long line (it didn't work). If they got mobile ticket purchasing on fando or flixster I'd come here more often, but I've fell in love with other theaters with more comfortable seating. read more

I was visiting my girlfriend and we felt like watching a movie and this is the closest movie theater from the VCU campus that I found. The theatre seems to be new and the prices are the same ridiculous prices that you find in any other theater. Plenty of parking so I don't think you would have any problems finding a spot. The theater itself seems a little small from the ones I'm use to back in San Diego, but overall pretty nice. The armrest doesn't move up for all you couples that like to hold each other during the movies, but the seats lean back, which makes it a comfortable experience. For the food choices: sure, they have your standard stuff, but to my surprise they even have sliders and french fries, which is something that I have never seen in a theater before. They even sell beer, but unfortunately you can't take it to the theater with you. Instead they roped off a little section where you can enjoy a brew before a flick. Gives a whole different feeling to a movie and brewski night. The overall experience makes this place a 3.5. With the friendly staff and decent seating, it still doesn't give me that shock and awe unlike other theatres that I've been to. It is nice to enjoy a beer, but why offer it when I can't take it inside the theater. read more

This place really SUCKS! And I gave them so many chances. my experiences: 1)Movie times at the theater was different than the movie times posted on Fandango, I don't know who fault that is 2)Some of the ticketing and concession staff were rude 3)concession area was trashed 3)they tend to put the new movies in their smaller sized theaters; looks like 30-40 seats to me 4)sizes for value of concession food was a rip-off 5)front and back spacing of the seats were to close and the arm rests doesn't lift up. 6)entering and exiting the parking lot is a nightmare 7) their rewards system SUCKS! you ONLY get points for each movie ticket purchase and you have to bank the points and redeem them for certain items. Other places you get points for tickets AND concession stand purchase and they give you certain items when your points are at certain levels, no need to bank, redeem, and bank again. read more

I get the fact that to survive in the cinema business that you have to have multiple screens, but due to limited space they tend to show popular movies in theaters that are really tiny.(I just saw Django Unchained within two weeks of release and it was screened in a room that could hold 30 people tops. It's not like the film was an instant flop or anything.) If I'm going to pay 10 bucks to see a film I want to watch it on a screen that isn't smaller than the tv in my living room. I loved this theater when it first opened several years ago only because they have the Dyson Airblade in their restrooms. Sadly, the air blades are getting worn out and until they are replaced I will adjust my rating down to a measly 3 stars. read more

I love the look of this theater! The nostalgic feel is remarkable. Parking is easy to get in and out of and plentiful. The theaters are really small, but this worked well for the live cast viewing of Rocky Horror. If you are going to see that movie, skip the live cast. I am a die hard RH fan and have seen it live many times, but this cast just shouts obscenities over each other- the fouler the better. No props are allowed, so the audience participation isn't audience participation at all. It's like watching that comedy movie thing where the aliens are in the audience making comments about the movie. Not funny or enjoyable. Especially when some of the jokes cross the line. read more

For the first time we were in the smaller theater that others talk about. Man, it is smaller! The movie was still large enough to be worthy of paying $10, but the theater was crowded and it did feel a bit "less" than normal. We decided it wasn't enough of a difference to complain, but it was disappointing and made us feel slightly jipped. Just know this going in, so you don't feel bummed. Cheers. read more

Worst movie experience of my life....start to finish. 1. Walked into pure chaos. There was a sea of people surrounding the ticket kiosks with no discernible line...no rhyme or reason. 2. We arrived 45 minutes early to the movie, so we sat down to enjoy a beer first and kill some time. All 3 tap beers were out and only one of the two kinds of bottled beer was available....at 7:30 on a Saturday?? 3. As we sat there trying to determine if the single beer option was suitable for my group, an employee approached us and told us the tables were reserved for those who were drinking, and if we weren't drinking then we needed to vacate the area. So you have no beer, but I have to leave if I'm not drinking the beer that ISN'T EVEN AVAILABLE to me? Seriously?! 4. The sound in the movie was horrible...the speaker cabinets rattled loudly in response to anything with bass and it sounded as though it had loose parts. All the patrons around me were loudly complaining. 5. Finally, and by far the worst aspect, is that there was NO ROOM in the theatre. And this is coming from a very small person! To give context, I'm 5'1 and 103 pounds....and I couldn't cross or uncross my legs. There was no arm room. And trying to get from the end of the row to the aisle while everyone is seated is nearly impossible. I will not come back. read more

I really love this theater compared to most in the area The seating is new enough in the main building to be very comfortable for a 2 hour sit. They have kiosks where you can purchase tickets (Also through fandango) to skip the lines at the door. I rarely get concessions, but it's always about the average amount of time you'd spend in line at any other theater. BE CAREFUL though if you're going to see more of an "indie" type film. There are two separated buildings that show different movies. The main theater usually has all of the blockbuster types, but the smaller Criterion theater plays the lesser known movies across the parking lot. The lines are usually unbearable in there and the theaters are tiny compared to your average theater. I give them 4 stars mainly because they don't specify on their tickets or through fandango if your movie will be playing at the main or the smaller building. If you're running late, it can really mess you up to have to walk across the parking lot just to stand in line for another 5 minutes. read more

Went back tonight and was disappointed again. I bought 3 tickets for the 9:40 Inglorious Basterds and then realized she didn't apply the student i.d. discount. I asked her why not and she said "sorry, too late". Then we went in and there were no seats. Turns out they oversold by at least 20 seats and everyone had to sit and wait an hour for the next showing. As for the puke smell, it wasn't as strong as last time but it was still there. The theatre was unbearably hot and the seats are still mega uncomfortable. The only reason I can justify going back is its close vacinity to my house. read more

Slowest concessions in the movie industry. Get there a half hour early if you want popcorn. There are typically 5-6 people working behind the counter but I've waited 15 minutes while being the only person in line. I really like the theater and everything about it but with posted movie start times, I just ask that the concessions at least stop chatting with one another and sell popcorn to people in line. read more

Came here on a last minute movie night with some friends. We were welcomed when we walked in and received our tickets fairly quick! We walked into the theater where our movie was being showed and it was over-crowded. We went and exchanged our tickets to get a different time, which was a very easy process for us. We walked into the other theater where our movie will be shown, and it was very disgusting. Trash all over the theater, on the floor, on the seats, and in the cup holders. The trash cans were overflowing with trash and it was smelly inside the theater. It looked like no one clean the theater all day. I was very disappointed with the condition of this movie theater. read more

Plenty of screens so always have a lot of showings, but some of the screens are really small with awkwardly shaped halls (long and narrow). Reasonable prices, great snacks, plenty of space to loiter in the lobby. Still doesn't have a self service kiosk though, come on now its 2013. read more

Perfectly fine, post-gigantic-48-screen cimeaplex, back-to-cozy-er kind of theater. It's still big, but it's not a cavernous, popcorn-selling machine. The physical place is fun/interesting due to being built inside an old factory, the seats and screens are fine for "standard fare", and there is a beer garden, albeit outside the theater area and not perfect for drinking minutes before the show. I kinda like the place and would choose to go to it, any day, over a typical cinema. Sometime soon I'll have to try their Sunday morning mimosa thing. THAT sounds cool. read more

It's close to home, so it gets points for that and the student discounts and midnight shows. I thought it was going to be similar to the cinema draft house in Texas. Nope. The building construction looks nice from the outside, but the inside is nothing really special. You can't bring alcohol beverages into the actual theater, you have to drink them in the designated drinking area. The other night it smelt like someone puked. read more

As the closest mainstream cinema to the fan, I go to Bowtie to see any new release. Not a great place to see art house or foreign films, but they do show multiple screens of any new blockbuster or films tipped for awards. Pricey like any major theatre, but your student ID will get a slight discount in the evenings. There's a beer stand in the lobby (you can't take the beer into the theatre). On the weekends at 11am, there are screenings of older or classic movies called "Movies & Mimosas." Like with the beer, you can't take your mimosa into the theatre. Also, I believe it's every Friday at midnight, they show Rocky Horror will all the dressed-up bells and whistles though the demographic seems pretty young. Not a bad facility. Still feels new-ish. Also, there are bike racks which is much appreciated. read more

I've started going to this place more and more. One reason... they play movies so much early, which is awesome. Me and my wife take turns going to the movies when we can't find babysitters and like to go early rather than later. Most theaters don't start showings until 12 or after, but Bow tie typically starts them around 10:30. Second they run movies much longer than other theaters. I like to go after a movie has been out a while so they aren't as crowded and this place will always have movies that have been out a while. Lastly, and the reason for the 5 stars was one experience in particular. I was going to see a movie and when I told the attendant, she advised me that two bus loads of school children had just walked into that same move. I immediately changed movies and thanked her profusely. Awesome of her to give the heads up. Instead I went to a movie where I was 1 of 4 people, just what a like. I will say - the seats leave something to be desired. Really enjoy this place and quickly replacing all the other theaters I go to. read more

First time here, I don't have any complaints except for the beer, if I'm going to pay the prices for a beer here, at least have someone who knows how to pour one, we got a draft & a bottle, the guy that poured the bottle in a cup apparently had no idea how to pour one, I was shocked watching him, half the beer was head ( foam) and he kept pouring that out...... Great location. The first movie I saw there was Lincoln. The only issues that time were the first preview being audio only and some loud vacuuming that could be heard from the hallway for a minute or two. I would have given a four or five star rating based on that experience alone. The second movie I saw there was Skyfall. On this trip the movie started more than 15 minutes late. Once it finally started, there were subtitles. I went out and asked if they could be removed and was told they could. The guy I told it to got on his radio and told someone about it, but after I returned to the theater they remained on the screen for the rest of the movie. It definitely took away from the experience. I'm tempted to give less than 3 stars based on this. read more

Five stars is as good as it gets...And really, for Movie Theaters this side of the river, That is a fact! Dating a movie buff who visits WEEKLY to the theater, He treated my daughter and I on a special Saturday. He picked the movie, A thriller, a first for my daughter on the big screen anyway, and we had a blast. Your usual chaos with large groups of people in line, laughing, shouting, the usual deafening roar is amplified through the warehouse like setting, but that adds to the charm. I didn't take pictures, every picture listed here is accurate, I don't care about the sticky floors, or the popcorn skewed everywhere, the Staff is super nice, smiling and generally glad to be there. Bring your own hand sanitizer because the wait in line at the restroom is hard to get through. One huge tip? ( And it comes from a movie Pro like my beau ) Bypass the line and go straight to the ticket kiosks.. or just purchase before hand. We haven't had a line to deal with YET. Why don't people know about that? It's so odd to me why there is such a queue at the ticket counter, and the kiosks are always empty. 1 Large Popcorn, Large Soda and a Small Popcorn, Small Soda and Skittles came to around 27.00. He said that's not such a bad deal. I would have to agree. read more

I am torn between a two and a three star review. I would like to give it three stars (and wish more) for being in an old renovated brick warehouse. However, after the lines and service today, I just can't. I came two days after Christmas to a matinee, and certainly expected a crowd, but not a ticket line that was at least a 20-25 minute wait, with all the ticket purchasing machines being broken. The concession line took FOREVER. The cashiers didn't seem to have any sense of urgency or make any attempt to move the line along expeditiously at all. It was extremely frustrating while you're trying to make it into the movie on time. If I were to return here in the future, I would either a) buy a ticket in advance (the extra dollar is worth it), and b) get there early if I wish to buy concession food. Otherwise, just smuggle your own food and drink in because the line is not worth it and you'll miss the beginning of the movie. read more

If you go to see a late showing, don't get the combo with 'free refills.' Not even halfway through the movie I was told they had 'broken everything down'...so I couldn't get a soda refill. There were 8 people standing around and they just laughed when I said that I had paid for free refills and they never said anything about that there was a cutoff time or that that cutoff time was less than halfway through the movie. read more

Bow Tie Cinema advertises closed captioning, but their device does not work. I have been there a few times over the course of the year and each time I complain I am told that they will report this to the manager. Either the manager is ineffectual in getting this fixed or they never follow through on this promise. Any way you slice it - I will always choose another theater over this one because they do not appear to be interested in finding a solution. read more

The theater was FILTHY and gross! The seats and floor popcorn, cups, and trash. When asking for a manager, one of the kids working said "we were too busy" to clean up. When the manager came out, she told us, "I just got here". With as much as you pay for tix. You should have a clean place to sit. We drove past several other theaters to go to this one. All I can say is don't go to this theater on opening weekend! We were greeted with a line to get tickets ( star for self serve). A line to go in the theater, since it was a R rated movie all kids were told they wouldn't be let back in once they left without an adult with them. During the movie there was constant talking, security walking around. I couldn't pay attention to the movie due to the drama in the theater. Once the movie was over... at least 6 police and sheriffs cars.. as much as I love knowing there is security, I felt like I was in a war zone! read more
