I booked and waited to be able to chat through options that were available for my pup.  As many do, I work in an office setting, I waited for the call to come in which was minutes late (3 minutes if we're looking for details, 11:48 AM) I quickly listened to Karen's message and immediately called back (within 3 minutes of the missed call). There was no answer.  Within 5 minutes I'd also sent a follow up email explaining that I was still available and eager to discuss my pet, no response. Ever.  I should note, the message noted that I'm outside of her service area. Her website advertises D.C. training opportunities, lists an address in Mount Airy, where I'm from and where my family resides, I can work remotely from anywhere and can easily be available no matter where she requested to meet.  She also advertises boarding and training packages on the website which sparked my initial interest.  My family owned and a well known local kennel in the area for more than 30 years, I love the setting of Mullinex Mill Road (which is rural) and I thought it would be a better setting for my dog's training than some other businesses located in busier settings.  Put simply: I specifically sought out this trainer for their location.   After calling late for our scheduled consultation and no follow up in spite of a follow up email and phone call(and message) from me I'm bummed.  My family has owned and operated two local small businesses. I know things can get lost, but the lack of customer service was really disappointing.

We worked with Karen for 8 sessions over the past 6 months and we have seen a tremendous amount of improvement. The first time Karen met Sammi, she immediately noticed her high anxiety and she explained how this attributes to her aggression and reactivity. She showed us step-by-step methods to teach Sammi to be more relaxed and less anxious. It's incredible how much her anxiety has improved since we first started. As Karen explained to us in the beginning, this is a slow and steady process and we still have much more progress to make with Sammi. But we have all the tools and knowledge we need to allow her to succeed. This type of training is not quick and easy - it is important to do the work and stay consistent, but it is so worth it!! It truly does work! We have a much better relationship with Sammi and we're so grateful to Karen!

I then tried Village Vet. They answered my call, understood that the vaccines and roundworm meds were time sensitive for our new puppy, and got me in for an appointment right away. When I called later that night about his crying, they reassured me he probably felt bad after his vaccines and he'd be okay the next day. Sure enough, he woke up chipper and with the zoomies. I was so appreciative of their responsiveness to my call! They even doubled check with the vet, who called me back knowing it was our first dog, to let me know that Momo would be fine and vaccines can make them feel pretty rotten for a day. In November they sent a Black Friday email out that got me huge discounts on heart worm, flea and tick meds as well as his puppy food. Totally unexpected but very appreciated! Saved me almost $70 in one stop. This is our first dog and we have loved the care at Village Vet.

I would absolutely avoid this practice owner at all costs unless what your pet needs is minimal and…read moreyou know exactly what is needed (I.e. standard vaccinations for boarding, etc.) We came in to Gaithersburg Animal Hospital and unfortunately ended up working with Dr. Tidd. She came across to me as smart and understanding. But that proved to be just a false impression. Here was our experience; My dog had horrible, urgent diarrhea that contained some blood. I was very familiar with his already sensitive GI tract, and condition (IBD) and had already had several tests done on him in the past and tried every less extreme remedy to no avail (and his condition worsened) so I knew right where to start. I ordered an ultrasound. Miss Tidd also insisted I get an xray which made absolutely zero sense to me because; 1. I knew - and assured her - that he had no blockages; 2. An ultrasound would capture more tissue than an X-ray (I asked them to verify this and they wouldn't); and 3. Since he was having movement, obviously there was no blockage. I declined the xray and left that practice with very little information. When my dog's conditioned worsened still, I went to Dr. Tidd directly at Village Vet, explaining that he needed fluids and some more supportive care as his diarrhea was becoming involuntary and he wasn't eating and was becoming lethargic. She literally took one look at him while leaning against the counter in the exam room with her arms crossed, and zero examination and said he's not dehydrated - she could just tell. Then she went to the back and got a bowl of water and came out and plunked it down and my dog drank. It was as if she was trying to prove me wrong. I hesitantly agreed to more bloodwork that I didn't think necessary (since he'd just gotten that days earlier if not less), so she took him away with her - informing me that he took treats from her freely while he was away (after I informed her that he had severe allergies and IBD, and he was there for severe diarrhea, that struck me as incredibly negligent, and again it definitely felt like she was trying to disprove my statement that he wasn't eating... his prescription food). I came in for the specific purpose of getting him fluids so when we finally returned to that she said he doesn't need it. I said "Well, can we just do it anyway?" And she said no. She then explained that, since he was such a big dog, the amount of fluids he'd need versus the amount she could give wouldn't even be enough to help him. What kind of idiotic explanation is this? So I basically said I don't care - can we just give him whatever fluids you feel you can give him, and she again said no and AGAIN suggested we do X-rays which I declined. As we left I asked the tech for the results of the blood tests - everything normal ...except slightly elevated because he was dehydrated. Dr. Tidd also gave us a probiotic paste which I found silly since he wasn't eating, and I later found out that his system was simply washing out anything it came into contact with without absorbing it so the HUNDREDS of dollars we spent for the visit, the blood test, and some stupid probiotics was a total complete waste, and roadblock to getting my boy proper treatment. I found another vet (Bennett Creek AH) who actually examined my baby before informing me that his gums were tacky and he was still lethargic, so he was absolutely in need of fluids, and he'd already lost 5 pounds from not eating. I wanted to beat her to the punch so I said "in case you think he needs X-rays I don't want -" and she cut me off and said that if we had an ultrasound we didn't need any X-rays and confirmed that the constant diarrhea was strong evidence against any blockage. She also instructed me about the GI system and how certain diarrhea presents and how cases of blockage present and my boy didn't fit the profile for a blockage. He received hydration but then the diarrhea turned to straight blood - a condition known as hemmorhagic gastroenteritis, which can be deadly, and which has an unknown cause. He was hospitalized for 2 nights, receiving fluids and supportive care before finally pulling out of it. My guess is that he was exposed to toxins in the soil from then sudden and large amount of Spring rain. With the correct supportive care from a much better vet he pulled through and fairly quickly started eating and gaining his lost weight back. Dr. Tidd just wasted a huge amount of time and money and flatly turned away care that was absolutely needed. I definitely do not recommend this doctor at either one of her practicing locations.

We use them on an as-needed basis, usually when we go out of town for holidays (cat-sitting) or when just one of us is gone (for dog walking). We have not used the overnight dog-sitting service, but I'm sure it's great. They are full-service -- administering meds, scooping the litterbox, checking the mail, watering plants...very helpful for the longer trips out of town. Even though it is a small business (and we are sometimes last-minute with our requests), we get responses quickly, and Jennifer has never not been able to take care of our animals (even when we had particularly difficult situations, like medical issues with the cats or a dog that could not handle strangers). Every interaction I've had with Jennifer has been pleasant and professional. She loves animals, animals love her, and she is infinitely patient and accommodating. I think they are fairly limited to the immediate Laurel area, though you can can check if you live outside of town.
