I found just that at the locally-owned Playthings Toy Shoppe in the Westport Village! Oh how I love to support locally-owned businesses! I was pleased to browse the aisles and find that they were chock full of unusual, traditional, and more educational toys than I had found in the toy sections of the big box stores where brands like Barbie, Transformers, Paw Patrol and Stars Wars make up the bulk of the offerings. The toys were thoughtfully arranged, as if by age, and employees are ready to help with your selection if need be. Prices were in line with those of online specialty toy stores that sell these types of toys. Free gift wrapping is offered, which is a huge relief for those of us who do not enjoy gift wrapping! I highly recommend visiting Playthings if you are toy shopping. Parking is plentiful at the Westport Village of shops.

The prices were fair, and it excels at having educational toys and brands you might not find at the big box stores, which I very much appreciated. My son is into dinosaurs for the moment, so I went on Playthings' website and found a great set of dino figures. I was able to buy it online for local pick-up, and the icing on the cake -- I got it wrapped for free. Free wrapping is a service Playthings provides. I also want to commend Playthings on their great customer service. I ordered this right as the ice storm was starting, and they called me to see if I wanted to still pick up that day. The employee I talked to was concerned I would come out when they had closed early. I picked up the toy a couple of days later. Especially if you have kiddos to buy for, don't overlook Playthings.

Like on my first visit, I appreciate Playthings great selection of educational and fun toys. Their selection gets away from gimmicky action figures, Barbies, etc., and focuses more on thoughtful toys. For example, I noticed several Melissa & Doug toys. I took my time to browse a bit, and then one of the employees asked me if they could help. I mentioned that I was shopping for my soon-to-be 1-year-old daughter and her friend, who was also celebrating a birthday. The employee pointed out toys that I may not have considered otherwise. In particular, I bought a great magnet matching game and cuddly baby doll with a magnet pacifier. (Not sure why magnets became the theme, but here we are.) Playthings also gift wraps, which is such a nice touch that helped me cross an additional item off my to-do list. My son turns 4 in just a couple of weeks. We were amazed seeing some really rare toys throughout the store-and even more pleased to see how fair and reasonable their prices are. The owner is very personable and knowledgeable. He knows every detail of every item he is selling. He portrays a positive vibe that feels like you are viewing his private toy/gaming collections in his home. And TTD has been where we go to get even more. We love the tables of cards that are easy to peruse according to cost. TTD also recently got a Pokemon card vending machine -- my quarters have never been so coveted by my son! This is a very large space. We recently visited with my brother in law and his kids, and he mentioned that they don't have anywhere as nice as this where they live in Philly. TTD has everything you would need for other card games, like Magic, as well as D&D and board games. And there are several tables set up in the middle of the store for folks to actually play games.
