I participated in the Thanksgiving adopt a marine program for the first time this year. I had heard…read moreabout it a few years ago from a friend and thought it was a very nice thing to do because I thought the marines WANTED to be adopted to have Thanksgiving with a family because they could not be with their own families. That turned out to not be true. I picked up two marines on Thursday. One said his girlfriend and her mother were in town, and he asked if they could join us. I was not prepared for two more people, but of course I said it was fine and that they were welcome. We learned from the marine that they had flown out to see the marine from Chicago expecting to spend Thanksgiving with him but the marine was forced to participate in the adoption program. He said his superiors told him he could not see family, that participating in the adoption program was mandatory. Then the marines proceed to tell my adult children that "they felt like slaves being sold to rich white families" when I went to pick them up. I waited in line for over an hour to get them. I waited on them all day, bringing them beverages and food all day. They never offered to help once. And they felt like slaves? We were ready to return them to base about 7pm but the marine had two more hours to spend with his girlfriend and asked if he could stay longer. They spent that extra time filling my guests in on how most of the families who pick up the marines are super weird, how the marines don't like the program, yadda yadda yadda. Nothing but negativity. Needless to say, this was not a good experience for us or the marines. This program should be OPTIONAL for marines who want to meet people and have a good Thanksgiving dinner. If a marine wants to stay in sweatpants all day and eat Doritos in their bunk on Thanksgiving they should be allowed to. And they should absolutely be allowed to opt out if they have other plans.

We were ashamed for the longest time to check it out, but when we did it was such a blessing. Don't be afraid to seek out help when needed.
