Ayse was incredibly kind, welcoming, and so helpful. I originally stopped in for their Turkish sparkling mineral water, which is hands down the best sparkling mineral water I've found in Boston. Most sparkling waters give me heartburn, but this one actually helps relieve it! While I was there, I asked Ayse if she had any hidden gem recommendations. She suggested the labneh (pictured) and these cleaning wipes... and can I just say WOW. They have completely replaced my regular cleaning products. I use them all over my house, and I'm a total clean freak! They're made with vinegar instead of harsh chemicals, the strawberry scent smells amazing, and the price is unbelievable. I've already bought packs for my family and friends because I love them that much. And the labneh? It's the best I've ever had. I think I'm on my 25th container at this point. If they ever stop carrying it, I might actually cry. If you're looking for authentic Turkish products, friendly service, and some truly amazing finds, I can't recommend this place enough. There are Turkish sodas, savory yogurt drink and other beverages, chocolates, sweets, cookies, jarred red pepper paste, and all the Turkish essentials you can think of. They even have refrigerated items like beyaz peynir (feta) and sujuk as well as frozen manti and other goodies. Someone who has spent time in Turkey will surly find some products they like, but even if you have no clue about Turkish products, you will surly find something you like. The service is really great. The last time I was there, last week after visiting the delicious Lazuri Cafe a few doors down, the lady working there, Aysha, was great. She was friendly and helpful, making suggestions but no pressure. Offering complementary candies to enjoy. One of her suggestions was a Turkish cleaning product called Cif. I sent a link to her of a shipping container farm and she said "oh this reminds me of fresh truck." I thought Fresh whoahuh whaa?? www.thefreshtruck.org came up when I googled the name. It was far from a farm in a box, but still a really cool project servicing a need in the community. A National Problem: I have witnessed first hand working in the inner city, the lack of availability of fruits and vegetables in these neighborhoods. The kids eat firey spicy chips, drink liters of soda, blissfully unaware of the road they are going down and the ultimate price they may pay. When we buy local we stimulate the local economy and reduce environmental costs. When we eat healthy real unprocessed foods we help prevent disease from attacking our bodies. Access to fruits and vegetables is key. Some people in our "rich" country do not have access to real foods, and it drives me crazy. In many areas around our country there are no local farmers markets. I'm fortunate to have many options here in New York City. But this disconnect between the public and good healthy food is concerning. Programs that help the people in these areas try to help the community make healthier choices, however their efforts often fail as their patients have no access. Subsidized foods appear lining their shelves and local stores; cheap, filling, and in abundance. The subsidized foods in turn are expensive, and paid by the tax payers in the form of Medicaid, and other government programs. These food deserts ridden with, disease, cancer, diabetes, tragically turn a profit for the very same people who've probably subsidized this nutrient deficient processed foods in the first place. Cheap food is expensive: If we as a society consume cheap food we pay for it later. It costs less in the long run to prevent disease than to get rid of disease after someone is sick. He understands there is a disconnect in our country and he is trying to help do something about it. "Fresh Truck is a social business that will operate a retrofitted school bus as a mobile farmers market, serving Boston neighborhoods with fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables. Fresh Truck has a regular weekly schedule, reaching multiple neighborhoods each day and targeting communities that are most underserved in terms of food access. As the name implies, the store's speciality is olive oil, and you can sample a wide variety of oils and vinegars. If that's not your forte, don't worry because the store has plenty more to offer. I spent a long time just browsing the store because it's beautifully arranged. Even though it's fairly small, they make good use of the space. You can get locally made ice cream and honey, as well as kitchenware imported from all over the world. I found a very cute Christmas gift for my mom. There also sell cheeses, spices, teas, hot sauces - a lot more than I can list. Easily accessible whether you're driving or using public transit. It's a small local place so they don't have the variety that a huge store has, but I love what they have. They also don't have walmart prices (see above), but the quality is really good for the money. I've turned a bunch of my friends on to this place, it's my favorite grocery store, I'm so glad it's close by!
