We contacted Mayo who set up the initial appointment. Dr. Fineman diagnosed him with long COVID. Once that diagnosis was made by the almighty Mayo it stuck. What my husband really had was ALS. I had seen three other people close to me die from this disease and recognized the his symptoms. I specifically asked if it could be ALS. He told us unequivocally, no. Fineman sent him for speech therapy and occupational therapy. He did that for several months and there was no improvement. Things only got worse. But because Mayo said it was long COVID the next three neurologists we went to glommed on to that diagnosis. I know this disease is ALWAYS terminal. But Fineman's diagnosis robbed us of the time we had. We spent two years trying to find a diagnosis and getting treatment that would do absolutely no good. It also cost us money because we could have been receiving monetary and other assistance from the VA as my husband was a veteran. That included a monthly stipend of over $3000 and actual therapy to make his life easier. It took almost two years to get a diagnosis, obtained in July of 2023. My husband died in March 2024. I have no idea why Mayo set us up with a neurologist specializing in headaches. My husband had no headaches. Yes, I am still angry about the lost time. Time we spent searching for answers. Certainly any decent neurologist would have recognized the signs I did.

Dr. Mulholland was the neurosurgeon on staff at Huntington Hospital when I was admitted and my…read moreMRI's showed severe degeneration in my lumbar pressing on my nerves. I met her briefly and she ordered a CT guided epidural procedure. She said it didn't look like I needed surgery, but upon meeting with an orthopedic surgeon in tears yesterday, I was told that I likely need to have a disc removed surgically because the the disc is pressing on my nerves. Despite my paperwork saying I should have a follow up appointment within 2 weeks, I tried for 6 days to get ahold of her office and no one called or emailed me back. When I finally got through today, they had no idea who I was and couldn't see me until July, even though I mentioned in my messages and on the phone that the epidural doesn't seem to have worked and I'm in severe debilitating pain. When asked if it's normal to ignore a patient's voicemails and emails for 6 days and to not get the patient in within the 2 week follow up per my discharge instructions, I was told she was booked. I asked again if that is normal to not see a patient within the follow up period, especially one with a serious nerve pressing issue causing muscle atrophy and who's is severe pain, I was told she could try to ask the doctor to see me sooner. I told them I'd rather work with someone else, as obviously there is no care or concern for my condition. Yet another disappointing experience in our medical system as I suffer trying to find practitioners that will help me within a reasonable period. Thankfully, the orthopedic surgeon seems to care deeply, so I will follow up with them.

I'd like to offer a fair and balanced review of my experience with Dr. Celene Mulholland and the…read morepractice overall. I began care here shortly after the unexpected passing of Dr. William Caton, the founding member of the practice. My initial workup was completed by Dr. Caton, and under his leadership, I felt genuinely cared for and cared about. My first visit with Dr. Mulholland followed the results of MRIs for my cervical and lumbar spine. During that appointment, she provided a diagnosis that had been a mystery for 16 years, after struggling with unresolved symptoms since a motor vehicle accident in 2004 and a subsequent cervical spine surgery in another state. Finally receiving clarity was a deeply meaningful and validating moment. For that, I am truly grateful. On the downside, once it was clear I was not a current surgical candidate, I felt less of a priority within the practice. I frequently experienced long delays--sometimes several days to over a week--before receiving returned phone calls. I often had to call again to follow up, and even then, responses were delayed. Additionally, staff often expressed being overworked and overbooked, which did not inspire confidence in the follow-through on patient communication. I also took the time to request and review my medical records. What was documented during in-office visits was accurate and consistent with my recollection. However, I noticed that none of my phone calls were documented in the chart. This is important to me, as I asked several significant questions by phone about medications and their side effects. Having those conversations recorded in my medical file would have been helpful for continuity of care and accountability. In summary, I am sincerely thankful to Dr. Mulholland for providing the diagnosis that finally explained symptoms I had lived with for years. That alone is something I will never forget. At the same time, I hope the practice can improve the consistency and timeliness of patient communication, especially for those who are no longer in acute or surgical phases but still need ongoing support and guidance.

To quote a prior reviewer "Why is every Orthopedic office is Pasadena so poorly run? This is the…read moresecond one I've gone to and experienced a poorly run office." It's amazing how poorly run these Pasadena ortho specialists are, almost like they've been trained by experts how to create a process that is as inefficient and ineffective as possible while simultaneously insulting and disrespecting their customers. In this regard, it is an impressive place. Of course, we all know the reason: they make more money by over scheduling -- just like airlines. We all have wishful, aspirational beliefs that doctors' offices are "different" than car dealerships. They aren't: it is always about the money. So, from the general to the specific. This place is typically a nightmare in terms of timing. You really do need to schedule about 3 hours for an appointment. There is limited parking in the building, so expect to park in the adjacent lot (no validation, because that would eat into profits). Once there, you check in. Generally speaking, the staff are about as welcoming and kind as your typical Subway (sorry Subway workers, but you know it's true). You are a widget in their process. Give them your info and wait. A long, long time. Usually about 1 hour. And that's just to get past the front area. Next, they whisk you to an x-ray. Doesn't matter if you need one. Doesn't matter if you want one. Doesn't matter if you already have one. Again, it's about the money. So you get one. And before you do, you wait -- though usually only about 15 minutes here. Then you are put in a room. Yay! You'll see a doctor. Eventually. Sometimes, this room wait is 30 minutes, sometimes an hour. I've actually started to walk out and leave at this point. Finally, you see a doctor. I've seen a few here. I thought Dr. Bradley Johnson was good. He was unhurried. He explained things. He did what he could for me. Dr. Mark Jo is a different story. Same start: he seemed good, seemed unhurried, seemed to explain things. Problem is, he got it all wrong. First, he looked at the aforementioned x-ray and said your knee looks great. No problems structurally. You absolutely can run on it. But let's get an MRI to be sure. You can run in the interim. NOTE: he never touched my leg. He did not do the thing you see all doctors do on live football or basketball games to test the structural integrity of the knee. Ok, no problem, I'll run and get an MRI. I go back a few weeks later with the MRI in hand (and my knee where knees are). After the above-described wait, I get to the doctor portion of the adventure. Dr. Jo says that my MRI shows a moderately sprained ACL -- I should absolutely NOT be running on it, and he's surprised anyone would tell me I should (NOTE: that was him who did the telling). He also says that he's surprised he didn't pick it up on his first examination, you know, when he did the ACL test on my knee. I reminded him he never touched my knee at the first appointment. Oh well. So, great, I now have been running on a sprained ACL, making it worse. But at this point, I'm not really trusting Dr. Jo's opinion. I get copies of the MRI AND the MRI report. I read the report (as a non-MD, it turns out I am nonetheless able to read). Dr. Jo merely quoted the report to me. He didn't actually look at the MRI. Great. So I'm out. I go to another ortho place. This doctor (Dr. Rishi Garg) actually examines my knee with his hands. He also looks at the MRI. Both tests, he says, make it clear that my ACL is totally fine -- actually really good for my age (I later confirm this with an independent radiologist). Dr. Jo was just wrong. All across the board. Ok, so what's the lesson here? Huntington Ortho is a YUGE time suck. They are run like a for-profit business --- because they are one. Don't expect any old-school approach to doctoring here. And, if you get the wrong doctor (e.g., Dr. Jo), your care may be pretty bad.

I also thought it would be good to have an "in" just in case. Unfortunately, my experience didn't go well. To be honest, I have a fear of going to doctors and avoid it as much as possible. I arrived early for my appointment as instructed. The staff at the front desk were courteous and professional. About 10 minutes before my scheduled time a nurse escorted me to the room and took my vitals. When she was done, she said the doctor would be in shortly. 35 minutes later - no doctor. The room was cold, my fingers were numb, and I had to get back to work so I walked over to the front desk and told them I was leaving. The next day I received a call asking me if I wanted to reschedule. I said no because I was afraid the doctor would be a no show again and I would find another doctor. Later that day I received another call asking me the same thing, and I gave the same answer. This time the scheduler told me there were two other doctors in the network at the same location and she could book me an appointment with one of them. Unfortunately, the soonest appointment isn't until the end of July but she said she would also put me on the wait list. I appreciate that she went the extra mile to help me. Hopefully, I'll have better luck on my next visit. *Private parking lot.

The people here don't just clock in -- they show up. From the front desk to the nurses to the volunteers offering water and candy, everyone treated my friend with dignity and genuine care. We were there about four hours, and in that time, I saw more quiet heroism than most people see in a lifetime. Nurses moving with precision and grace, comforting patients like family. No chaos, no coldness -- just empathy and skill in perfect balance. They even offered me water and candy while I waited -- a small gesture, but it meant the world. It reminded me that while medicine keeps people alive, kindness makes it bearable. Life is short.
