Worst place and worst experience ever after being referred to him for a pinched nerve in my lower back and in need of a spinal steroid injection. The doctor's scheduler (who doesn't work Wednesdays when he only does surgical procedures on Thursdays and Fridays - how dues that make any sense?) sent a text at 1:45am on Thursday indicating me to be ready for my cortisone injection by 7:30 am.! Needless to say I didn't make it in time. After 5 repeated attempts to reschedule for the following week, I finally got in and was given no information about what to do in advance from his "top notch" scheduler. Upon arrival at the surgical center I waited two hours to be seen and finally went to a room where other patients were in a post op stupor and staring at me getting undressed. A few needed help but the few nurses were too busy chatting at the break station. The nursing staff seemed overwhelmed with the 6 patients who were there in post op. Finally it was my turn to go in. I asked the doctor to make sure to use as much of the local painkiller as possible since admittedly I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to needles but he seemed in a rush to leave and HOLY HECK did it hurt. The doctor's description of what I was about to feel did not match the pain and deep pressure I felt as the needle went into my spine. Not like me - but I did yell out an expletive when I felt the intense pain of the needle in my spine. And then he missed. Causing my leg to spasm several times on the table from him hitting a nerve. There was no apology. Nothing in terms of sympathy offered. I said "thank you Doc" once it was over to which he did not even respond nor did he check on me or come talk to me after the procedure was over. I was wheeled out to the post op area again and waited in a room where again no nurse could be found to help me walk off the pain and assist with my numbness in my leg. The next day there was no post op call from the doctor but I did receive a call from the surgical center indicating they would be there for another 10 minutes before leaving for the weekend if I wanted to call and let them know how i was doing. Lousy. Still no call from the Doctor or follow up. And guess what? One week later, I still have the pinched nerve and numbness in my feet and pain radiating down my leg. I would recommend anyone NOT going to either this surgical center or seeing this doctor . read more

DO NOT SEE Ashford !!! I had a severe sciatic pain due to lumbar stenosis. It took multiple visits before he offered a shot. He administered the shot and nearly killed me from excruciating pain. I yelled and cried so hard AND my sciatic pain didn't improve at all :( I went to USC KECK orthopedic and was in and out in 10 minutes and didn't feel any pain, not even the needle !!! I was walking in 3 days and in 10 days I was back to normal. The USC doctor even called me every 3 days to make sure I fully recover ! Ashford never explained what mistake he made and never apologized and, needless to say, never contacted me to see if the "excruciatingly painful shot' worked ! Some doctors should not be allowed to practice medicine. Total incompetent quack ! read more

Run from this man! Does not give a damn about his patients, their care or recovery. It's all about getting paid for the treatment or surgery. Nothing more. He's in it for the money. Left a family member after major neck surgery with no aftercare. Absolutely no compassion for the pain she was in and rather than address the pain he was vicious toward her. When she called his office for help with the pain they did not call back. His nurse said she was too busy to return a call for over 24 hours. He should not be licensed to treat a dog much less a person! read more

I have a VERY long history of being very severely and chronically ill. My whole life has been spent either in doctor offices or hospitals and surgeries. To say that I am a seasoned professional is a very gross understatement. Now that we've gotten that out of the way.... I scheduled my initial appointment with Dr. Ashford after experiencing about 6 months of typical sciatic issues. In the month it took me to get in, I interviewed many other surgeons and completed an MRI of the lumbar spine (it's always good to be prepared!). On the day of my first appointment, the wait was very minimal. Dr. Ashford came in with a huge smile and was extremely approachable and friendly. I told him I had an extreme disc herniation at L5/S1, based on the aforementioned MRI, as well as other smaller bulges on surrounding joints. Dr. Ashford, prior to seeing my MRI, very confidently smiled and started discussing disc bulges and PT. Lol. Then I gave him my MRI. He stopped in his tracks, said he had been wrong, and was immediately apologetic (it was very precious! It's also important to note that I DO NOT present normally for this type of injury). I was in surgery EXTREMELY quickly after my first appointment. I had told him about my previous medical history and that I would be a complicated case. Without even questioning it, I was scheduled to stay overnight in the hospital after the surgery for close observation. He also took great care to ensure I was given a central line (I really am a mess...)! I felt so seen and heard! Years later, it still has made an impact. Surgery #1 went very well, he took SO MUCH CARE to protect a very large tattoo on my back (you honestly can't even tell I've been cut open at all!!!), and it was all around a great experience. After surgery and into the next morning, I was unable to stand. I could barely sit up. As soon as Dr. Ashford was called, he took immediate action. I was immediately sent down for another MRI where we learned I had herniated again after surgery (I'm very much a mess ). I was able to get back into surgery first thing the next morning for my next "surprise" surgery. He didn't even have to cut me open again! Lol. This is a really long story that you don't care about, but the point of it is to say that Dr. Ashford has been an incredible asset to my medical team. I've had multiple "minor" (to me) complications since my surgeries, none of which are due to him or the surgical team at all, and he has been incredibly responsive. When I had trouble getting through to him with the office, he gave me his personal cell phone number and his personal email to ensure there would be no lag time in communication. At least a few times, this man has called ahead to the ER in the middle of the night to prepare them for my arrival and to provide orders for imaging, tests and/or procedures/hospitalization if needed (I'm really not kidding about being a mess.... ). He's extremely smart and confident and easily takes lead of a situation. I could see how some people may not like that, but this is, in my opinion, his best trait. I express my needs or troubles once and he hears me and plans accordingly. I really enjoyed having an opportunity to prove him wrong initially () but I can confidently say he has always had my best interest in mind, he's always bent over backwards to help in whatever way I need at the time, and he's easily one of the fastest and most responsive doctors on my medical team! He never wanted to perform surgery on me. I never felt pushed into anything at all, and I honestly felt (and still feel) that through the whole process, he grieved with me each step of the way and tried his absolute best to get me back to "normal" as if nothing had even happened. read more

Dr. Ashford may be a good choice for certain patients, but my 90 year old mother is not one of them. Let's start with the facilities: 800 S. Raymond is a nice enough building that has no parking lot. Instead they have an arrangement with the Metro parking structure down the street. It's not far, maybe 200 feet, but it is still less than optimal. They offer for-fee valet parking at the curbside, but the curbside is unfortunately situated such that anyone with any mobility issues has no room to get out of the car. As you walk from the curb (or garage) to the entrance to the building, there is a "press here" pad to cause the glass doors to open. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. So unless you have an attendant or have no mobility issues, getting in the door isn't easy. On to the third floor. The elevators are adequate and extremely slow. Plus they emit that awful loud BEEEEEEEPPPP sound frequently when old people don't move as quickly as the elevator would like. 3rd floor waiting area: Dr. Ashford shares a waiting area with several other practices. The waiting area is nicely furnished and some of the chairs even have arms so that people who need armed-chairs to rise can get out of the chairs. It's amazing how many doctor offices seem to not do this. Staff: The receptionist however is another story. She was much less than friendly on both occasions when I have taken mom to an appointment. Having never been there before, you would think she would have the courtesy to ask if I parked in the garage and wanted a parking validation. Not so. The people at the parking garage told me that they validate, but on the first trip it was a little late for that information. Dr.'s Assistant: Very nice and professional. The WAIT: At appointment #1 we arrived on time and after 10 minutes were placed in a waiting room for ONE HOUR. At that point I went out into the hall and one of the staff said "ooops, we forgot that we placed you in there". Dr. Ashford was in shortly. At appointment #2 we arrived on time and were immediately placed in a waiting room for 45 minutes, at which point I went out to the hall and asked if the doctor was present. I was told that he would be in shortly. And he was. The Doctor Himself: Dr. Ashford is pleasant and engaging. He has good people skills. He had _not_ reviewed the MRI that he had ordered prior to the appointment so he was seeing it for the first time. Based on what he saw, he recommended a back brace and/or surgery depending on how well mom healed with the back brace. Appointment 2 was a followup, and I would have thought it would have included some sort of examination, but it didn't. He didn't even take the back brace off to check for pain when the back was unsupported. To me this appeared to be just a billable visit that lasted less than 5 minutes. My summary is that Dr. Ashford may be a great doctor for some situations, but definitely not for someone who is older and has restricted mobility, or who has difficulty being out for longer periods of time. If you value your time and promptness, you won't like it here. There is free wireless Internet so at least you can surf the web while you are waiting... read more

Dr Ashford is the BEST! He is compassionate, clear with his communications, and explains options. He explains that he is a surgeon but there may be other approaches to consider that someone else could do. Ultimately, I went with his surgery in 2015 and was 100% better immediately. Dr. Ashford and his staff have helped me for over two years with varied spine issues, including surgery and conservative treatment. I'm ever thankful to have found him amongst other spine doctors out there that are NOT nearly as excellent with their communication, smarts, directness, experience, approachability, skill, and coolness as Dr. Ashford is. I've had such incredible luck with great orthopedic surgeons. Dr. Ashford is no exception. I hit it out of the park when I called Congress Medical and Dr. Ashford. For a spine issue causing me great pain. Ever since heavy duty rehab, i.e. two knee replacements, the right and left knee. Spine issues began even though I presented in great shape. Even though I've followed all rehab precisely, and as rehab/exercises are given me. Dr. Roy Ashford to the rescue. Maybe the best spine guy that ever lived, at least Dr. Ashford is in my opinion. Dr Roy Ashford not only did not diagnose my condition, a cerebral spinal fluid (csf) leak, he prescribed physical therapy which made it and my pain considerably worse! Physical therapy was the absolute best activity to perform to increase the severity of a csf leak and the constant pain I was suffering from it; p.t. for a csf leak is equivalent to vigorous exercise when one is bleeding profusely. Although my condition was due to an accident, spinal surgeons, which Dr Ashford is, are responsible for the foremost surgical causes of cerebral spinal fluid leaks and are quite knowledgeable about them, except for this doctor. Dr Ashford did not care that I was in constant pain. He told me that I should just endure it "like a farmer who looses an arm in a combine". I am grateful that I sought and received the care of another spinal surgeon and neurosurgeon who actually diagnosed my condition before being left to the only solution, the final solution, that Dr Ashford afforded me. read more

Dr. Roy Ashford's office has been non-caring I have a 9 mm disc in my neck pushingto to the spinal cord and a 4 mm disc left at C6 C7 dr. Roy Ashford assistant gave me a date of 7/25/18 appointment at 8:30 AMwhen I arrived with all the documentation they requested MRI report and MRI DVD and x-ray with also CD/DVD They stated they didn't have any appointment made for me at that time I said I didn't make this date up out of thin air or you told me that's the earliest if I could arrive at 8:30 in the morning I said OK I wrote it down and then when I get there they want to move it to another date that they didn't have any availability for me I was wearing my neck brace on my left shoulder brace they didn't seem to care here's a copy of what I typed in when his assistant gave me the date and time unfortunately I decided not to return to that office ever again after experiencing on Tuesday the day before a very professional doctor at another location which made me feel more comfortable .Wouldn't be able to recommend Royersford as a surgeon to anybody for orthopedic surgery needs he sees too many patients and is more interested in the money in my opinion I hope people do homework before they do surgery on who they're going to let repair their body. read more

The doctor came in with a smiling face and mentioned my issues root cause was family heredity. Then he was talk about pain management and other things which may work for only short term. He asked about physical therapy and i said it did not work for me and that i am going to chiropractor for the last few years. He said to continue what ever works as there is no magical solution. Then he asked if i had any more questions. I was totally confused as I was expecting him to give me more options. I did not expect a magical solution but when I asked him that he turned around and said that " You are not understanding me, as much as I would love to continue explaining this again and again to you I do have other patients who are waiting for me".... He also mentioned that he was a surgeon and as a surgeon he can go in and make my spine more stiff to help with the pain which will anyhow happen in the next 20 years naturally... IS this how a doctor talks with a patient??? From that point on I just kept quiet and wanted to get out of the place...in the end he did give a physical therapist persons name to try out but by then the damage was done and I lost trust in him. In fact I lost trust with specialists at this point. On a side note he did do all this talk with a big smiling face...which is even worse... Do not go to this doctor if you can help it!!! read more

My husband, Frank has been dealing with lower back problems for years. He has endured multiple cortisone spinal blocks to relieve the pain. These blocks did provide relief but eventually the pain would return. We finally consulted with our general practitioner who referred us to Dr. Ashford. We really appreciated the time Dr. Ashford took to explain everything to us. He also didn't jump right into a surgical fix without trying to remedy the problem by other means. My husband's back problem did require surgery and we are so grateful that we had Dr. Ashford perform it. His reassuring manner, attention to all manner of details from beginning of the process through my husband's final visit where he was released to go back to work, has been exceptional. I recently had severe leg pain due to a herniated disk. Shortly after I had seen Dr. Ashford I had an x-ray and MRI done immediately. By the next appointment he diagnosed the problem and started the treatment right away. I feel Dr. Ashford is not only a knowledgeable man but extremely efficient. I went into Dr. Ashfords office last year and was diagnosed with a l4/l5 herniation. Dr. Ashford recommended physical therapy and cortisone shots- with surgery as the last option. My back got worse and surgery was my only option as time progressed- I am really glad I did it. My back is much better than before surgery and I can return to some of my normal activities. I appreciate Dr. Ashford giving me other options and am grateful for his surgical expertise. With Dr. Ashford's help, I was able to return to my job. His medical assistant Mary has been wonderful- the office is really busy- but they are very accomodating. read more
