Cherry blossoms, which symbolize renewal, have deep significance in Japanese culture and are a traditional motif in art, literature, and cuisine. The short-lived blossoms only last for about two weeks before fluttering to the ground. The cherry is a symbolic national flower in Japan and is sometimes offered to other nations as a symbol of friendship. Branch Brook Park is the ultimate destination for cherry blossom season in the Garden State. With over 5,300 cherry blossom trees in 18 varieties on this Essex County plot, this park outranks every other cherry blossom collection in the world. This year, it's their 50th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival from April 4 to 19, 2026. With the peak bloom here, so were the enthusiasts and traffic. My partner and I were lucky to get a parking spot across the street from the Sacred Heart Basilica and walked a few feet to witness their spectacular colors of nature. This branch of trees is largely for looks as opposed to fruit production. The Yoshino variety is the most common type of cherry blossom in this park. The flowers range in color from pale pink to bright pink as well as white and ivory. The cherry blossoms and the leaves are edible. They are used in many traditional Japanese sweets and tea. The cherry blossoms here are absolutely stunning and make for a beautiful backdrop for photo sessions. If one's looking to do a photo session with cherry blossoms, Branch Brook Park is the place.
First off I never even knew this park existed in Newark, truly a hidden gem. We did make the mistake of going on a Saturday which was truly complete chaos. So many people and very difficult to find parking. There is a parking lot within the park but it's quickly filled. You can also park on the nearby residential streets and walk over too. We parked 3 blocks away and walked over which was an interesting walk to say the least. The blossoms were absolutely beautiful but i would definitely return on a weekday when it's less crowded. As it was near impossible to get a good photo that I won't have to edit people out of.
This is a beautiful park and it's free. I only learned about its status as home to the most cherry blossom trees in the US (over 5,300 trees in 18 varieties) by chance and as soon as I learned peak bloom was upon us, I dragged my family. They do have a website that announces the predicted peak bloom dates and they have a live cam so you can see for yourself. The park is relatively easy to get to and I couldn't find much about parking before going, but there's parking alongside the main streets running through the park. I spotted a parking lot in the northern half of the park on the map but we mostly stuck to the south so we didn't come across it. The park itself is huge and the blooms are beautiful. Even though we got there at around 10 on the first weekend (this was a week ago), there were already a lot of cars. By the time we left about 2 hours later, traffic was crazy as cars drove super slow looking for spots or making what looked like illegal u-turns. Try to go early. There are signs everywhere saying not to pick the flowers (they were... usually adhered to) and benches scattered if you just want to sit and relax. Many people there taking photos with the trees and also the lucky trees that have low hanging branches so they can be held adjacent to your face. There are different shades of pink to more vibrant ones, some that weep down and others more structured. All beautiful. We followed the trail to a playground for my kids as a break for them before we made our way back up. There appears to be another playground on the north half as well. Definitely recommend this place when it's the season! But definitely go earlier. There are public restrooms and some people came by to sell fresh fruit and churros. The churros sold out fast! The only downside was we went on an overcast day (and it rained when we got back to our car), but no regrets. I'm hoping to hit the north side of the park next year to compare!

The park is free and is open from dawn till 10 pm. Visit the Cherry Blossom Visitors Center first for a beautiful display of blooming trees. park information and a parking lot. Parking is also available on the shoulder of the road in this 300 acre park.
Wow, I don't have to make a drive to DC for cherry blossoms! I was so impressed with the beauty of the park and how well it was kept. Many areas have fencing but that protects the tree roots so I'm glad that they have that. The park isn't as large as the DC's tidal basin, BUT I would say that the number of cherry trees and varieties rival the DC park. The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart makes a beautiful backdrop as well. The walk around the lake took a little over a mile and it was a very pleasant walk and the park is clean and well maintained. We went on a weekday so there were plenty of parking right in the park and while there were people walking, it wasn't jam packed. I'd imagine the weekend would be like a cattle drive. I highly recommend making a visit here during the cherry blossom season but try to avoid the weekend.
This review is really for people who aren't familiar with the park. It's a very long, narrow park, and we come in the spring to see the cherry blossoms. It can be very crowded this time of year, especially in the areas where the cherry blossom trees are. We don't even try to park in the lot near the Welcome Center. Instead, we park on Branch Brook Park Drive near Mill Street and walk from there. This is the very north end of the park. There are clusters of cherry blossom trees there, as well as in the middle and southern sections. We covered 8 miles on foot and only made it to the middle section, so you'll definitely get some exercise if you're walking from one area of blossoms to another. There are bathrooms in the Welcome Center and a few other park buildings, as well as many port-o-potties scattered throughout the park. The port-o-potties are well maintained. There aren't many places to eat in the park aside from the occasional ice cream or food truck (a nice café on the lake would be awesome). Not far from the park, you'll find Starbucks, Dunkin', Burger King, and various local spots that you might like--but you'll want to check a map and plan ahead. (We are coffee drinkers!) If you can go during the week, the cherry blossom areas won't be as crowded. And don't be fooled by my photos--it was very crowded, but we managed to find a few nooks and crannies where there were no people. We were there from 10AM til 2PM on a Saturday.
went here to watch the cherry blossoms. Some say it's better than washington DC so i had to check it out. Nice thing about here is that you can park all along the park area for free and the trees here are more larger and fuller than the trees in DC. Also less crowded than DC and more accessible.

For extended adventures, the 36-mile Lenape Trail connects Branch Brook to other parks across neighboring towns. With multiple entrances and parking areas, it is easy to find your way in. We recommend starting at the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center, it is a great launch point for your visit.
Just when you thought there's minimal stuff to do in NJ, I get a Instagram reel stating that the largest Cherry Blossom is in NJ. Just like a lot of fake edits on Instagram, I thought this was fake too. Th3nni did a Google search to find out that it was true!! I was actually in DC and in my way back, I decided make a stop here at the Branch Brook Park. I was a week off from the peak festival, but they still had ample trees for you to enjoy. This is a nice park to take an evening stroll or drive thru the park in your car for a quick glance. It wasnt that crowded amd doesn't cost you anything, so stop by. Note that it's a large park with a lot of cherry blossoms, but they are spread out throughout the park and aren't as dense.
Every year, the visit to view the Cherry Blossoms is such a pleasure. Knowing that it's the largest collection of Cherry Blossoms in the entire country makes it more enjoyable and worthwhile. It's fun walking a large portion of the park and seeing practically every single ethnicity either picnicking, taking social media photos, or enjoying this once a year treat. There is parking along the streets, plus at the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center. If you can, try to stop by the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center. It has the history of the area, photo op opportunities, and rest rooms. We visited during peak bloom and the views were spectacular. If you haven't visited before, please do so, next year. If you want to ensure that your visit will guarantee nice blooms, there is a live web cam that'll show details of the trees.
Did you know, Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey, has the largest single collection in the United States, with about 5,300 trees in 18 varieties. April is the time to go as they are in their peak bloom season. You will be rewarded with beautiful and scenic walking trails and picnic lunches under cherry blossoms. The park runs its annual Cherry Blossom Festival as well as multiple events such as the Cherry Blossom Bike Race Challenge, and the Cherry Blossom 10K run that happened last Sunday, April 12th. The weather was excellent, and there was plenty of community pride as everyone showed up. You can also be a spectator, should you choose to, if you don't want to partake in the run. Family Day will be taking place on April 18th. For those who wish to take in the scenery only, the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center renovation has been completed since last Fall of 2023. Inside, there are comfortable bathrooms, an artificial but exceptional-looking year-round cherry blossom tree in full bloom, and a souvenir center where you can purchase sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc. Proceeds benefit Branch Brook Park Alliance in care of the park, according to the Branch Brook Park's website. The entire Welcome Center has a modern and open feel throughout the building as it has plenty of natural lighting and high vaulted ceilings. As you enter, to your immediate right, you will find the gallery space with historical displays and a mural depicting the vast collection of cherry blossoms and their history. If you are ever in the area, this is absolutely worth a visit and yes, it is completely free. read more
THE GOOD ----------------- + Large, scenic park with LOTS and lots and lots of cherry blossoms (more than in Washington D.C.!) for viewing during Cherry Blossom season. + On specific days, during the Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival, there are special events - such as Family Day, Bloomfest - which include the presence of food trucks and activities (bounce castles, music) for kids. + Trails are easily walkable by people of all ages. + There is a clean, large playground, basketball courts towards the southeast end of the park. + A majority of the park encompasses a lake and a pond, which makes the walking very serene. + Parking is allowed inside of the park along the roads, so feel free to drive into it instead of parking outside of the park. THE NOT SO GOOD ----------------------------- - On those verrrrry popular days to visit (e.g., weekends during the Cherry Blossom Festival), parking can be chaotic inside of the park, so come early in the morning and bring your patience. Came here during the cherry blossom festival and it is beautiful but very crowded. I work five minutes away from here and usually I'm able to enjoy a nice walk however, during this visit, it was not possible. One should definitely feel secure there's cop surveillance. read more

Came here again on a Thanksgiving weekend. 1) The park was empty, but was beautiful. 2) I like there is multiple bridges connecting the pond. 3) The park overall is very large for a long walk. read more
This review is long overdue. Branchbrook Park covers North Newark and part of Belleville. On Heller Parkway and Franklin Avenue, there's always been a hotdog truck for decades. For ages, I've seen men enjoy fishing in the lake. During April, the Cherry blossom festival brings people from all over to visit the lovely blossoms in Branch brook Park. This year 2023, the blossoms were underwhelming possibly due to the erratic weather. In addition, the Essex County Cherry Blossom 10k Run takes place. I'm delighted to see tributes to Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Composer, Pianist and Conductor and Frederick Law Olmsted (1822- 1903)- Father of Landscape Architecture. *For safety reasons, it's best to visit Branchbrook Park during daylight hours only. The park is well patrolled. However, one should always be aware of their surroundings. read more

Cherry Blossoms are the best in the United States. Should not be missed. Take a drive through, pack a picnic, check out the weekend events during the festival this weekend and next. The park was the first county park in the U.S. and is on the N.J. and U S. Historic registries. And, it was designed by the same landscape architect who designed Central Park. Yes, all this for free in Essex County, New Jersey. I think this is one of the best values in North Jersey. Free! Can't find a better value than that, can you? Enjoy! read more
Well, thousands of people flock to Washington, D.C. every year to see the cherry blossoms, but we have our own cherry blossoms, right here in the tri-state area. At Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey. In springtime, the highlight of Branch Brook Park is definitely the cherry blossoms (we visited last week). The park features a combination of open meadows and small patches of woodland on gently rolling terrain. Fact: With more than 4,000 trees, Branch Brook Park has the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the United States! And though you can enjoy cherry blossom trees throughout most of the park, the most extensive collection can be found around the lake at the southern end. Depending on the weather, one can enjoy the park at its peak. Don't forget to check out the stunning Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Parking: could be tough to find on weekends, its street parking so just wander around until you don't find one. read more

One of the best parks to visit during Spring season for their large collection of cherry blossoms. It does get super busy and congested during peak times but the park is large and can accommodate a good amount of people. That said, go during off peak hours, weekdays, to get the best experience (unless you like being in a crowd) Welcome the season with a visit. Branch Brook gets a high recommendation read more
Came here to see the cherry blossoming event. It was lovely and the park was huge. We had to walk for a while and it had quite some trees blossoming. We came a week after the peak event so it only had a handful of blossoming, but they were still pretty and lovely to see. Will definitely come back in the future at its peak and busy blossoming event to experience whole in full : ) read more
The end of Cherry Blossom Season and I made sure to stop by to breathe the fresh air enjoy the park with many others. Great spot just to walk or family activities, make sure to bring your camera, plenty of photo ops. read more

You can visit Branch Brook Park and see the "World Famous Cherry Blossom Trees". There is even an Essex County Cherry Blossom Bloom-O-Meter! This week indicated "budding" but I found some beautiful Cherry Blossoms in full bloom! You can drive through the park and park along the street. Public restrooms near the Prudential CONCERT GROVE. Walking trails available. Cell phone tour available. read more
Came last week to watch the Cherry blossoms & we had a good time with family. Perfect day to enjoy spring blossoms. If you have seasonal allergy make sure to premedicate with anti histamine, otherwise you wont enjoy the view with all the sneezing & itchy eyes. We had picnic under the trees. we brought our own food. Did not see any food for sale in the area. Parking is free and not very hard to find, but we had to walk a few minutes to our picnic spot. Bathrooms are available & its fairly clean. If you love cherry blossoms this place is not to be missed at spring time. read more

Stopped by here to see the cherry blossoms with my family this weekend. It was my first time coming to the park. It was absolutely beautiful ! A lot of walkways filled with greenery and cherry blossoms in full bloom also had some other types of trees. This place is perfect for a scenic walk, park is huge there are also bridges and some statues . Park also extends and does have a baseball field and there are various vendors along the paths selling fruit , snacks as well as food trucks . A wonderful place to spend the weekend ! read more
During the two week cherry blossom peak is the best time to come visit Branch Brook. People visit from all over, have wedding and sweet 16 photos taken here. It's a staple if you're from the area. Parking can be a little hectic during that time but during the rest of the year it's plenty. The park itself is a few miles long so it's perfect for a leisure walk or a run. There's also a gorgeous lake to check out. There's a ton of activity courts too, perfect for the whole family. The park stretches from newark into belleville. It's a great spot to enjoy the summer weather. read more
This is a beautiful oasis in Newark! I stumbled upon it when I was living a few blocks away and took the light rail into the city last year. There are lakes, grassy hills, walking trails, CHERRY BLOSSOMS, and deer. Some of my favorite things. parking by the lakeside pavilion on the south side will provide you with a wide open grassy field to picnic in, and a great view of the cathedral. The north end of the park is less scenic but does have trees and long walking paths. Thats where Ive seen the most deer. If you decide to be lazy and not park, just driving the full loop is lovely. Taken from the BBP website, The Olmsted Brothers, same family that designed Central Park, designed this one. Pretty interesting stuff! "1898 Dissatisfied with Bogart and Barrett's work, the Commission hired the Olmsted Brothers firm; John Charles Olmsted and Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. were Frederick Law Olmsted Sr.'s nephew/stepson and son. While their work continued that naturalistic style of landscape design championed by their father, in Branch Brook Park they were required to incorporate the elements of Bogart and Barrett's plan that had already been constructed. This led to the Olmsted firm's design concept consisting of three divisions: the Southern, from Sussex Avenue to Park Avenue, incorporating the elaborate "gardenesque" elements from Bogart and Barrett' the Middle, from Park Avenue to Bloomfield Avenue, which would be a transitional zone, mixing the exotic with the indigenous; and, as the culmination, the Northern Division, the largest and most naturalistic area of the park." I was fortunate enough to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom here a few years ago. This year, not so lucky. There were still some cherry blossoms around but I think we came about a week too late. We dropped by on a Saturday at around 1 pm and it was pretty crowded. We were afraid of what the parking situation would look like but it was actually pretty easy to find free street parking. Even though there were a lot of parked cars, it seemed like someone was always leaving. Will try again next year but will go on a weekday just to avoid the crowds. Came here for the first time during cherry blossom season for their Essex County Family Fair day on a Saturday morning 4/13/24. The event was located in the south division by the Prudential Grove so that's where we spent all of our time. I felt like it was probably towards the end of the peak of cherry blossoms as I saw alot of pink leaves on the ground, although we also did see some vibrantly pink trees. Place was big. You can park on the road throughout the park but we decided to park out on the streets cu we figured it'd be less traffic trying to get out of the park. We arrived around 11am at the start of the event and it wasn't busy yet, but there were still quite a bit of ppl waiting on lines for the bounce houses. Our 2 year old toddlers enjoyed the bounce houses. There was also a tiny petting zoo with bunnies, chicks, goats and donkeys. The animals were really cute and the kids loved them as well. There were magicians teaching tricks like juggling, balancing plates, walking on sticks. There were a couple of food stands/trucks available to buy food. Overall we had a great time. Even though it was busy, it wasn't overwhelmingly crowded. There was still alot of open grass space for the kids to run around, and there was a guy flying a kite. Central Park is to NY like Branch Brook Park is to Newark. It's a large park in the heart of the city known for its cherry blossoms in the spring. You can drive or bike ride around the park and there's plenty of free parking and public bathrooms. There's a paved path for walking or running and benches. There was a soccer field, some random structure that can be used for exercising, and a dog park. There's a few lakes but I didn't see anybody fishing and would be surprised if anything is able to live in that water. One area had 2 full court basketball courts and a kids park. There was a roller skater rink that was closed. Another area of the park had a full football field and 4 different enclosed baseball fields. Branch Brook Park is famous for its magnificent Cherry Blossom in Spring and we were impressed when we visited last March. The parking would be really difficult to find during cherry blossom season so we highly recommend to visit early to beat the crowd. The park is not huge but delicate and well planned. The trial was wide and flat so it is also great for babies in strollers or elders. However, some of the trials were muddy so it won't be a perfect time to visit after a rainy day. read more
