There are some caring and hard working staff, but overall there is a lack of teamwork on the part of the staff. Cleanliness has also suffered. In memory care, the residents are placed around a TV for most of the day, with little variety of activity or recognition of the needs of individuals. There is poor communication both from the care managers and from the administration. My mother who was a long time resident had 2 episodes of defensive behavior a couple months ago, after which administration was quick to require additional outside sitters at considerable cost. These incidents were not unusual for dementia patients, according to Sunrise staff and outside consultants. Despite no additional events, Sunrise required mandatory discharge after 30 days notice and significantly increased her care level and expense during her remaining stay. We are fortunate to have found a much better place for Mom to live, where people actually care about the residents and give them the respect and care that they need.

I explained the entire situation before going & it didn't seem to be a problem. During the tour in memory care, I noticed the strong stench of urine and feces throughout the unit. There were aides on their cellphones, which was an issue I had at the place I wanted to move my grandmother from. I wanted her somewhere where people did their jobs & weren't distracted by their phones while mysterious falls happened and whatnot. So, that Was a turnoff for me. After the tour, I was told by the director that she would be going to do an assessment on my grandmother the next day & would get back to me on next steps. She never got back to me. I heard back from the sales rep & she just said that they can't provide the care my grandmother needed. I found that weird because during my tour, I saw someone half deceased in a bed where she told me they also offered hospice care. If you offer that, there should be nothing you can't do. My grandmother was simply in a wheelchair with dementia. So, I was very annoyed with their lack of transparency and feel that the place I was trying to move her out of sabotaged her ability to leave by telling lies. I wasn't given the chance to dispute anything. I was just told they couldn't take her. That's fine. I probably dodged an even bigger bullet because I was told by staff at her current MC facility that their staff are rough with residents and I don't want my grandmother anywhere where she could be hurt. So, be aware of this if you decide to place your loved one there. Go check the DSS website & check for complaints too.

I spend many days visiting in the common areas with my newest aunts and uncles, losing track of time most every time I visit. After reading the last review I felt the urge to report the changes I have seen. I do not want my newest family to get a bad wrap. I actually toured the entire facility in November 2022, memory care as well. My mother is just outside that area and I have no complaints with any odors. They have recently just taken a portion of the assisted living rooms for the memory care section. My mother's once long hall is getting shorter. I do know they have some of the sweetest ladies working on that side as well. My mother is older and would love a room closer to the dining hall. They are working on updating a room for her now. Maintenance and housekeeping have added some very diligent workers this year already. There is something new being updated every week. The care staff has improved as well, some fresh faces that really love and want to help these elderly residents. I can't think of anything bad to say about this place. if I have a concern I feel like they address it right away. I also see improvements in every department just since November. I recommend to every family in need of their help to get involved, visit regularly, listen to your loved one and become part of this nice community.

Kathy DeStories responded to my inquiry & I went into detail telling her what happened, what I currently pay per month, and what my budget was. She scheduled me for a tour. When I went into the main location (they have several buildings), the receptionist was not friendly. After signing in/temperature check, I was told where to find Kathy. I went to her office & we talked and talked and talked. Then she showed me the pricing sheet which was way over my budget!!!! Why would you have me drive all this way and then show me something almost $2k over what I'm paying??? Ugh!!! She apologized and then said she forgot that sometimes they have companion rooms...???? Not sure how she forgot, but ok. That price was closer to what I paid, so she took me for a tour in their Parkside building (memory care unit). It wasn't as updated as I expected especially for what they are charging but anyway. We walked around & there was a resident walking around and he popped Kathy's butt a few times. Ummm, if that happened to MY granny, she's gonna hit him with the uppercut. I promise him that. Anyway, we kept walking around and as we did, some parts of the unit wreaked of urine and feces. They need to clean and keep the residents clean/dry. Come on now!! We went back to her office & she gave me all the paperwork. I was shocked that before you complete the normal application, you have to complete a financial one which includes giving them copies of your bank statements and whatnot. They are nosier than Social Services. I don't know many people who can financially afford these places but need them to take care of their family member. No matter what a bank account shows, they still have to pay it. So, I decided to continue looking. I want to make sure she is in a place I can trust to keep her safe and protected as well as clean/dry. I also want her somewhere that doesn't have memory care residents looking like zombies (drugged up) with no kind of fun activities. My search continues...
