I loved this spot mostly for the wine selection. The sommelier there was so knowledgeable and helpful in helping me and my friends pick our wine for the night. That was a fun experience. Brasserie 701 was my restaurant of choice for my Christmas morning brunch! It did not disappoint! My server Tristan went above and beyond- he was incredibly busy but still made time to offer a few suggestions around Montreal "from a local". I really appreciated this banter as he gave me tips and tricks and insider info on the places I was already planning to visit. Once a year I award a server 100% tip for being incredible, and Tristan was my 2024 recipient! Thank you so much! The buffet was officially supposed to begin at 10am. I was seated around 950 and everyone was floundering about setting up the buffet. It seemed like nobody was in charge and everybody was unsure of their role. I didn't even get water or a Bonjour until about 1020! But it was smooth sailing from then on out! There was a hot table with beef bourginon, eggs Benedict and salmon. The cold table featured different salads- classic Caesar, beet salad and quinoa salad. The dessert table was far off on the side and I'm not sure many people even saw it (I was sitting across from it). The sunshine hits in the most lovely way through the windows of Brasserie 701. Brasserie 701 located in an historic building with cathedral ceilings and chandeliers. So historic that they used a heavy crane to lift window washing platforms besides the building. White tablecloths, wine glasses, water glasses, cloth napkins, the works. Wife had the CAN29$ 2 course lunch special of onion soup and pan seared seabass. The onion soup had onions, gruyere cheese, red wine, maple syrup and beef broth. Could definitely taste the sweetness of the maple syrup. The serving size of the seabass was large, at least 7 ounces. Unusual in that it came with artichokes. I had the CAN35$ 3 course lunch special of house salad with homemade vinaigrette and Parisian gnocchi with lamb. The house salad had carrots and raw onions besides lettuce, covered with a thick creamy vinaigrette sauce, not too sweet, but just right. The Parisian gnocchi came with garlic, pearl onions, peas covered with a rich sauce, and delicious pieces of lamb. For dessert had the chocolate mousse with bits of raspberry and blackberry. Of course, wife wanted half. Was looking for the gnocchi with drunken noodles, but those reviews were from 2016. It's located perfectly within walking distance from both Notre Dame and old port. I really liked the vibe; many groups were enjoying their food, drinks or dessert. The staff are helpful and friendly. I originally came in for an appetizer, but the dessert menu was so attractive that I decided to go with appetizer and dessert. I got lucky that they weren't out of escargot. Came here for an anniversary dinner during our trip to Montreal. We ordered: pork paté, seared duck, squid ink lobster risotto, lime cheesecake, an Aperol spritz, and a unique cilantro cocktail! FOOD REVIEW PORK PATÉ- 4.5/5 - This was my first time having pâté. It was served in a cut out slice of bread , a mushroom jelly, mustard, and veggies. I don't believe pâté is particularly my cup of tea, but I did enjoy this one! SEARED DUCK - 5/5 - The duck was seared to perfection! Juicy, tender, perfect amount of chew. It came paired with a saffron cream polenta and honey carrots. The red wine sauce was the perfect pairing. Definitely give this dish a try. SQUID INK LOBSTER RISOTTO - 5/5 - This risotto was one of the best I've had! I typically go for mushroom risotto, but I really enjoyed the seafood flavour of this dish. It came with a whole lobster tail and four separate pieces of calamari. Nicely plated and tasted absolutely delicious. LIME CHEESECAKE - 5/5 - Paired with fresh fruit, mango and passion fruit coulis, you can't go wrong with this cake. Perfect way to end the meal. The lime cheesecake had just the right amount of sweetness. DRINK REVIEW SAINCILANTRO - 4/5 - Cilantro in a cocktail? Who would have thought haha... it sounded unique and was recommended to us by our server so we gave it a try. It tasted okay to me as I am genuinely not a fan of cilantro or coriander. I give it 4 stars for the uniqueness! APEROL SPRITZ - 5/5 - I wanted something sweet to start off my dinner and I also never had Aperol before. Tasted great, 10/10! ATMOSPHERE Located just a few steps from Notre Dame, this is the perfect location in Old Montreal. Ensuring everyone was safe during these times, they had clear panels between every table. The interior gave a cozy vibe and it was nicely decorated. There is a bar as well and enough tables for a busy night. So happy we found this place! It was right under our hotel so we decided to give them a try. Their outdoor seating is lovely, very spacious and you get a nice view of old Montreal. The staff is very friendly and happy to be back in business post covid. They really follow safety protocols and keep all their areas sanitized and cleaned. We started with a bottle of Italian rosé and it was perfectly chilled and refreshing. We both had the bacon burgers and oh my goodness, so tasty and full of flavor. The drinks were not great. They can't serve alcohol outside bc their license expired. They don't have enough wait staff to take care of tables. Takes forever to get a check and food. We ordered a simple cheese plate and while the cheese was good, I'd expect a nice restaurant to tel us what type of cheeses we're eating at minimum. It's typical for them to tell you about the origin as well. Overall, the $$ you pay at this brasserie is NOT worth it. He gave me feedback on my terrible French and affectionately joked with me when he said something I didn't understand. "I got you with that one, huh." This restaurant was able to seat us with last minute reservations for 8 people via open table. Located in Old Montréal, Brasserie 701 was a good place for nice dinner. The restaurant has somewhat of a fancy high end bar atmosphere in the Hotel Place d'Armes. Our waiter was pretty attentive to us; however the food took a little while for it to come (probably 45 minutes or so after we ordered). The flank steak was the dish I ordered with regular fries instead of sweet potato fries. The steak overall I thought was pretty flavorful and tender; there were some chewier pieces/fatty pieces but overall was cooked well. The fries were good with the aioli sauce that came with it. Since this is highly recommended by TripAdvisor, we had our first meal here after landing in Montreal. This is also a popular venue for wedding banquets. We witnessed one while dining here. The restaurant has very strict Covid measures. We had to show our vaccination QR code and our negative test results before allowed to enter the restaurant. Menu is on QR code only, no touch. The menu was populated with very good French dishes. Since we are in a French restaurant, we chose escargot for our appetizer. The escargot was tasty with pesto sauce but the size of the escargots were very small. I think we had better ones at Meet in Paris back in Culvert City. Other dishes were not too bad. While the wild mushroom raviolis were excellent, the rosemary steak was mediocre. The beef was kind of tough to chew on. True to its French root, the dessert was outstanding. We had a creme brûlée for sharing and we just totally enjoyed it. This desert was the highlight of the evening! The Oysters Rockefeller came with leek fondue, creamy cheddar sauce and fresh herbs. We found that the size was quite small and so wasn't really filling, but overall was quite tasty. The Beef Tartar was our favourite out of the two, it came with Parmesan, parsley, avocado, shallots, truffle oil, and caviar mustard. We loved the caviar mustard for the Tartar and the use of avocado. For our mains, we found them a little disappointing. The 701 Burger was an AAA beef burger that had Guiness cheese, sautéed mushrooms, arugula, bacon, pickles, paprika, and maple syrup mayonnaise. We found the burger to be average and typical. The Grilled Organic Salmon came with grilled asparagus, cauliflower fritters, crispy kale leaves, and hazelnut sauce with white wine. To be honest, this dish was fairly bland and we didn't enjoy anything about it. The cauliflower fritters were oily and tasteless, and the hazelnut sauce just wasn't hitting for us. To finish off our meals, we were recommended their Baba Au Grand Marnier from our server which was Grand Marnier syrup soaked cake, Chantilly cream, and seasonal fruits. The dessert was mediocre, we found the soaked cake soggy and the cream too sweet. We would recommend this restaurant for drinks and appetizers only. 7/10 read more

The ambiance was perfect - absolutely lovely building and decor, perfectly low warm lighting without being dim, and a non overpowering volume of music and nearby chatter. Our food and drinks were excellent. My husband had navarin of lamb and I had beef bourguignon, which was a special that evening. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and we rounded it out with crème brûlée for dessert, which was the best I've ever had. I was doing a happy-food-dance all evening. In addition, our service was impeccable. Gavin was attentive without being overbearing, genuinely kind and welcoming, engaging and funny, and took the time at the end of the evening to share recommendations for other restaurants and experiences to try while in Montreal. I was looking for a place for a birthday dinner for my friend and was recommended to Brasserie 701 and specifically for the rooftop terrasse which I thought was what I had reserved for , but when we got there the hostess ( she was super nice), had informed us that if we wanted to go up we had to go on another waiting list which was not written anywhere on the site ( Brasserie /Open table) so that was deceiving but we settled with the outdoor seating by the road. This is my first one-star review ever, but I truly don't think it'd be fair to give it a higher star rating. Granted, I visited during the Grand Prix weekend, so I acknowledge that it was undoubtedly much more crowded than usual. However, I don't recall a comparably bad dining experience in the past few years, regardless of circumstances. The service: servers were rushed and seemed totally overwhelmed. What that translated into was a 30 minute wait for someone to visit our table for drink orders, only to have them return not once but TWICE to confirm our drink orders, only to wait a long time to get our drinks (which were overpriced and underwhelming), only to wait another 30 minutes to place our food orders and then over an hour to actually get our food. I understand it's not their fault, but it was ridiculous, and the quality of the food just made it worse. People at multiple tables got up and left because the wait times were absolutely absurd. The atmosphere: Gorgeous hotel setting, I'll give them that for sure. However, the bathrooms were a disaster and missing toilet paper in all stalls and paper towels and had water all over the place. It was just bad. The food: Honestly, if everything else was the same but the food was good, it would have been an okay night. I would have been willing to overlook the rest and chalk it up to a busy night on a busy weekend. However, the food was a total joke. The bread in the bread basket was legitimately bad--like tough to chew and tasted stale. We spent $25 on a cheese plate that was legitimately 4 very thin slices of cheese, a few pieces of very thin half-grilled bread, a handful of nuts and a few dabs of what tasted like Smuckers jam. It was a joke and the fact that it was the best part of the meal speaks volumes. Not a single one of us liked our meals or finished more than half at most. My brother-in-law ordered a meat dish with polenta, which was brought out after more than an hour of waiting. He quickly realized the polenta was cold. Like, inedibly so. The waitress apologized and went to get him a new dish, and again, the polenta was cold and inedible. My salmon came out soon after, and after a few bites, I realized that the middle was raw. I am currently pregnant and was alarmed to discover that and shared it with my husband to confirm that I wasn't crazy. Nope, definitely raw fish and a health hazard, especially for me. Again the waitress apologized and I waited almost 30 minutes for more fish to come out. By the time I got my food, I wasn't even hungry anymore, and we were all pushing 3 hours and losing steam. We asked for the check and the waitress said a free crème brûlée was coming out, which we declined. The management made no additional effort to address our displeasure, and we saw multiple such free desserts being delivered to nearby tables with apologies, so clearly we weren't the only ones having a crappy meal. I was incredibly disappointed by the meal and by management's empty attempt at resolving things--none of us wanted to share a $9 dessert after dropping $300 on a joke of a dinner. Suffice to say that we won't return, and while I do truly feel for the waitstaff put in an impossible situation, for the prices they charged, I felt that our dining experience was more or less inexcusable. read more
