Entry: you arrive and are asked if you want your coat to be held (which is nice due to the Space within the restaurant during the winter. Server was nice even though at some point he was just standing there and we were waiting for him to come back to order dessert to the point where u actually had to call him but this was nothing truly. Lamb with sweet garlic sauce Filet mignon with five peppercorn and cognac sauce Key lime pie The meat was great, truly. The sauces? a total disgrace / turn off considering the price of each plate. Sweet garlic, had nothing I could say I feel the garlic in at all. Flavorless. Five pepercorn with cognac non existent ! The only time i taste the peppercorn was if I BIT the actual peppercorn. The dessert ? I ate 2 bites and left the entire thing. The "crust" was nowhere to be found it was watered down carton... and the lime layer felt like I was biting into fake jelly. Is it possible to celebrate your anniversary twice in one week? Short answer...yes. We celebrated again at dinner tonight in Montreal. This was a quaint restaurant with a French feel...conservative paintings, breathtaking chandeliers and ornate ceilings. This Michelin restaurant was popular as there was a constant flow of diners. We again had appetizers, entrees and shared a dessert. Appetizers included lobster bisque and mixed green salad. The bisque was smooth and creamy.... seasoned extremely well. The mixed green salad has a finely drisled dressing. We had salmon and lamb breast. I had not heard of a lamb breast...only lamb chops. This lamb was the best I have ever eaten...super moist with light gravy. We ended our meal with shared cheesecake. Our server, George, was so delightful. He was humorous, engaging and so attentive. Restaurant Bonaparte is truly a stand-out in Montreal restaurants in terms of food, atmosphere, and service and is in one of our favorite memories in Montreal. We were seated by the window which was lovely. The cocktail list had so many interesting and delicious sounding cocktails that it was hard to choose. Each came with a card with a painting of a partially clothed woman and description of the cocktail. I got the Ah! Camomille which had a lovely base of chamomile flavor with honey and floral flavors. It went well with the lobster. Our waiter took excellent care of us. Even with two other tables with one larger group of four or five, our conversation could be easily heard. We came to visit Montreal for our first wedding anniversary and we' we're looking for a beautiful, elegant restaurant with amazing food and to celebrate, well we found it! The restaurant is located on a side street with those beautiful cobblestone roads. It is part of a hotel, you enter the hotel lobby and then the bar area and then one of the three dining rooms. The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming and congratulated us on our anniversary. The menu for food, the cocktails and wine list were very eclectic and expensive. We each had a glass of wine. My wife likes Sauvignon Blanc. I had a Bordeaux blend. Both were amazing. I had the homemade mushroom ravioli and a cream sauce. My wife had the mixed green salad for appetizers. Both were amazing! I had the tofu with the seasoned vegetables which was exceptional. My wife had the filet mignon which she said was one of the best she's ever had. We also had an old-fashioned, which is the best one we've had since we've been in Montreal, and the dessert was a hazelnut chocolate cake, which they put a sparkler on top to celebrate our anniversary, which was such a nice touch! The dining room was initially noisy and we were offered alternative seating arrangements, but chose to stay put and the ambient volume eventually decreased. I started with a terrine with cornichons and pickled onions, followed by braised lamb shank, cooked perfectly. Others started with a creamy carrot/squash soup flavored with anise...very delicious...and the duck breast with maple/berry sauce was also very good. I came on to Yelp trying to find a restaurant who had availability for our group dinner last night and between the stellar star ratings, tasty pics, and appetizing menu items, Bonaparte restaurant looked very promising. My friends and I are staying in Montreal near the convention center for a conference and we needed a restaurant in walking distance that had a fairly decent variety of food for the different dietary restrictions and palates. We also didn't want stray too far from local cultural cuisine. In comes Bonaparte restaurant! We walked along cobblestone Street in old Montreal to the quaint Bonaparte hotel with restaurant on the corner. We were greeted graciously by the hotel front desk, receptionist in a beautiful lobby, adorn with chandeliers. When we went into the connect restaurant, the host was wonderful and gracious. They said us quickly and even add on an additional person to our table. Our server, Catherine, was excellent from start to finish. She gave excellent recommendations and was wonderful with her attentive service and very pleasant demeanor. Half of our party opted for the tasting menu - which they all loved - and the rest of us went with à la cart menu items. From the blueberry mocktails to the onion soup with au gratin bread to the incredible salmon with grilled bell peppers, my meal was nothing short of excellent! I thoroughly enjoyed everything. To close out the meal, Catherine recommended the Le profitérole for dessert and it was so very delicious!!! But we wanted options such as the grand marnier soufflé that was not included in the pre fixe! So make sure you like the courses in the pre fixe before ordering. Ordered lobster bisque, which was perhaps one of the best I've tasted. And the foie gras poêlé, which is the seared one! I know it's so bad and inhumane. But oh too good to pass up! Especially when it's banned in New York nowadays. Oh how I've missed this. Also got the layered tofu with veggies, which was excellent! It was a firm tofu! We were celebrating a special occasion and wanted a special meal to match. Wow! I was looking forward to this meal for weeks but I was absolutely blown away. Every single person from the waiter to the bartender and the host was so kind and so helpful. They explained everything and were so attentive. We did the full tasting with a wine pairing and every dish absolutely blew me away. Notably were the lobster bisque, the mushroom ravioli, and the dessert trio. The little cheesecake was phenomenal. We were given French wines: a bubbly, an "orange wine"two reds (a Burgundy and Bordeaux), and a 100% pear wine. They sat us in a romantic little table right against a window overlooking the streets of old port Montreal. We shared the steak tartar which was also good. For the main course I had the lobster on pasta. It was beautiful but the lobster, which was served removed from the shell, had some shell stuck in it. I dined here alone while in town on business, wanting a single fine dinner while working endless hours. The welcome was classy but not snooty, taking my overcoat and seating me with some choice in the matter. The staff all seem efficient, knowledgeable, and well-trained. It did take longer than it should have for my order to be taken, but the waiter was very helpful in explaining the dish I was interested in: the filet mignon made Rossellini (??) style. The bread was delicious but sized for a table of two or three people, and should be cut down for a single person so the customer cannot fill up before getting dinner. The butter was fine but plain and could have used some salt flakes or herb or oil to give it some jazz. The steak was good, not wow, and the dish was beautiful. However, the seared fois gras on top was not seared enough and was mealy and not good, so the crowning part of the dish went uneaten. I took dessert with me for breakfast - a chocolate mousse - and it was good but nothing special. Overall it was a good meal but overpriced since I essentially threw away the fois, which is why it was the most expensive single entree on their menu. read more

The lamb shank was plated beautifully but the lamb was dry as if reheated previously, the flavor lacked savory elements. I dined at Restaurant Bonaparte on my last evening of a short vacation in Quebec. As a solo female diner, I'm often settled into the worst table in a restaurant, but not this time. While my table was for two, they sat me so that I faced a window booth, and kindly sat no one in that booth while I was dining. I was able to look out the window while I ate, which was very nice. First off - I must commend all the staff. From the host to the wait staff to the bar staff, EVERYONE was cheerful and kind. They smiled. They recommended. They also ensured that I could order a half portion of the magnificent soup of the day, a marvelous tomato that was not creamy but tart and fresh. I've never eaten anything like it. After that, I decided to indulge in boeuf bourguinon (essentially, beef stew on French steroids). I'd had very little in the way of red meat during my time in Quebec, and I was ready. It was so rich and so very, very good. For dessert, I had mousse au chocolat, an old favorite. I also had a Manhattan which was oh, so tasty. During this magnificent meal, I set my phone down and didn't look at it except between the soup and boeuf bourguinon so that I could take the one photo of my food. I honestly wish I lived in Montreal so that I could go to Restaurant Bonaparte once a week. Maybe twice. read more

Was visiting Montreal and was on the lookout for some delicious fine dining French cuisine - Restaurant Bonaparte popped up as a interesting place to try, so we booked reservation before out visit to give this place a go! We went on a Wednesday at 7pm and were able to get a good table in the middle of restaurant. The atmosphere of the restaurant is more on the elegant fine dining side, but there is no enforcement of dress code here. Though you may wear casual clothing, it may feel slightly awkward due to the ambience of everything being so elegant. We got the Five Course Dinner menu, which included a good variety of dishes that I'll review below: Lobster Bisque: This is a thick and luxurious bowl of bisque! As mentioned on the menu, there was a slight hint of ginger that sort of cuts through the luxuriousness of the bisque. There also were hints of small lobster fragments scattered throughout, these were more like tender small strands that give you a nice difference in texture. Duck Foie Gras Creme Brulee: This was one of the most interesting Creme Brulees that I have tried! This Creme Brulee is has the usual luxurious and creamy egg flavor upfront and a pleasing pudding/custard texture - but is immediately followed up with the Foie Gras flavor. It's a deep and extremely rich flavor of liver, like pretty much a butter that just coats your taste buds till it's dissolved. It was delectable on it's own, and further complimented by the finely diced small apple chunks, which gives the fruitiness that is really needed. They do also give you toasted bread to spread the Creme Bruleeon. Rabbit Confit: I haven't tried rabbit before, so this item on the menu piqued my interested. The small rabbit steak is wrapped in a crispy phyllo dough - the rabbit itself was decent and the dough does give a nice textural feeling. This was a nicely presented dish, but I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the red wine sauce mixed with the rabbit flavor profile - But that's just my thoughts and others may enjoy this more. Pear and Tarragon Sorbet: Yum! I really liked this sorbet. This part of the meal was served in a tiny dish with a small scoop of the sorbet in a liquid pool of the same flavors. This was a very refreshing, much needed, and clean tasting break from all the rich flavors above. The pear flavor comes through strongly and hints of tarragon come through in the end. Wished I got a bit more as I could inhale a bowl of this sorbet. Roasted Duck Breast: This dish was presented in a spectacular fashion with the duck breast fanned out and surrounded by purees and vegetables. The plate that this was served on was also heated, so you had to be careful not to burn yourself when enjoy this course. The duck slices were hearty and berry sauce gave it a nice sweet and aromatic taste. Out of the sides, I would say I enjoyed the sweet potato (could have also been yam) puree the most - it was light and airy. Pastry Chef Dessert Selection: A nice end to the meal! The dessert platter was served along side your selection of tea. Creme Brulee, cheesecake, and a strawberry macaron were the selection this time around. I would say my favorite on the platter was the strawberry macaron - it had a very pleasing thin outer crust, followed by a soft interior that left a bit of a sticky chew, which is very pleasing, also the strawberry flavor was pleasantly strong. The whole five course dinner lasted about 3 hours - when we finished up, it was around 10pm. Just something to keep in mind if you do decide to give that experience a try. Overall spent about $130 USD (about $170 CAD) for everything that you see here. I'm glad that we were able to give Restaurant Bonaparte a try as this was nice introduction to French fine dining. If I'm every back in Montreal and looking for a classy fine dining ambience with delicious and exquisite French dishes, I would definitely give the other options on the menu here a try! Restaurant Bonaparte is a must go French dining spot in Montreal. It is located at Old Port Montreal inside Bonaparte Hotel. Although the hotel is a 3.5 stars hotel, the restaurant is 5 stars. We always have at least one dinner when we travel to Montreal. After a disappointing experience in Joe Beef the night earlier, Bonaparte is definitely 180 degrees turn around. Service is attentive and top notch. We ordered a lobster bisque to start, followed by the signature duck breast, and veal chop, ended up the famous chocolate chip souffle. All the dishes are presented nicely and taste delicious. Keep in mind there is a 20 mins wait for souffle, so ordered when the entree arrives. Scallops were good but not so much I'd order again, however the plating was beautiful. We have been here 2-3 times for dinner and every time we come for it is exceptional experience for both the food and staff. The service is superb. Friendly, knowledgeable staff who care that you enjoy the meal. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and the food is divine. On our most recent visit, we had the salad and rabbit confit in phyllo dough to start. Both were delicious (obviously the rabbit was more enjoyable than the salad as it was a salad, but the salad was well dressed and came with great toppings/additions). For our entree we had the catch of the day (wahoo, came over rice with different veggies eg zucchini, sweet potato, asparagus, and a beurre blanc) and the lamb chops. Both were absolutely delicious, cooked perfectly, and everything on the plate was there for a reason and worked together to make the dish sublime. All of the desserts have tried are equally sinful, the chocolate chip souffle, apple tart, profiterole and chocolate mousse, but the souffle was my favorite as it is so incredibly light. I was really excited to try French food in Montreal and chose Bonaparte based on all the great reviews, and it didn't disappoint! I made a reservation for dinner Friday night at 7 for 2. I misremembered the reservation time and arrived half an hour early, but they were still able to seat us. I came the weekend before Valentine's Day, so they were offering a 5 course tasting menu for $130, $196 if you do the wine pairing as well. However, my friend and I weren't hungry enough for the tasting menu, so we chose to go a la carte. I asked our server for recommendations, since everything looked fantastic, and he recommended the mushroom ravioli and the roasted rack of lamb as two of their most popular dishes. We started off with some bread. We were a huge fan of the baguette slices but personally didn't like the other bread as much, as it tasted like a multigrain version of sourdough. The butter they provide is fantastic as well. We finished the first basket of bread and got a second basket to eat with the soup. For food, I started with the lobster bisque ($16),which was probably the most underwhelming part of the meal. It was good but a bit on the bland side. My friend got the daily soup of the day ($9), which was a beet soup, and it tasted exactly like beets in soup form. We shared the mushroom ravioli ($18) for the appetizer, and I'm so glad we did. I don't eat much ravioli usually, but even I thought the ones here were really good. Most memorably, the skin on the ravioli is the thinnest I've ever had. It's quite impressive. For my main, I ended up going with the duck leg confit ($36). WOW. It was SO good here! I love duck confit, and the one I had at Bonaparte was the best I've ever had. The meat was super tender and the skin perfectly crispy. I tried to eat it slowly so I could enjoy it for as long as I could. I would come back to Bonaparte and order this in a heartbeat. My friend is vegetarian and ordered their only vegetarian entree, the layered tofu ($31). I was honestly a bit surprised to see a tofu dish on the menu, as everything else on the menu is very French and tofu is... not. It's a couple of tofu layers topped with a tomato-based sauce with vegetables. My friend thought it was pretty good, but I tried a bite and thought it was just okay. Hubby and I had a lovely dinner here. Started with the lobster ravioli and lobster bisque. The ravioli had a delicious butter sauce, the pasta was light and melted in my mouth. The bisque was creamy with notes of fennel. Main dishes were duck breast and filet minion. Both dishes were served medium rare with an accompaniment of vegetables. For dessert we shared the chocolate chip soufflé, I ordered an express martini. Really delish (the wait person suggested the Apple pie as his personal favorite), however not many places serve an assortment of soufflés. Highly recommend! Great service. Had an outstanding dinner on our trip up to Montreal. The restaurant focused on the details and it made the experience for the dining public exceptional. Two of us in our party did the tasting menu - a six course meal that was delightful and properly paced - 2 appetizers, an amuse bouche, a palette cleanser, an entree (smaller portion but highest quality still), and a dessert. My younger son got a filet mignon that was to die for, and my wife was extremely happy with the duck. Wine list and pairings were great as well. As good as the food was, the service may have been better. Our waitress was attentive and helpful, and made the experience even better.
