Went to dinner at Brasserie Lipp, and to say the least it was an interesting experience. We had a reservation, and were seated quickly, but waited over 20 minutes to order, so long the host took our order for us. While waiting for our food to arrive, we watched as a boy at the table next to us have wine spilled on him and his coat by our waiter. The waiter proceeded to dry clean the coat next to us. When the food finally arrived, it was very good. Steak was cooked perfectly, fries delicious. But as we ate, we noticed the waiters unpacking the baguettes. It just so happened the baguettes had been bought from the grocery store next door, a Monoprix. A couple near us was eating €40 cheese on €1 baguette, and washing it down with a €100 bottle of champagne! Overall, a very amusing experience. Our first and final experience dining at Brasserie Lipp was appalling! A concise, detailed account: -Because we (nicely-dressed) had reservations, we were seated promptly, then completely ignored by the many staff passing our table for 20 minutes; -after 20 minutes, the maitre d' obsequiously seated another (French) couple two tables down from us, then told us they would be a party of eight and "would we kindly move to another table?"!!! -we were moved to a table that lacked any silverware, then again ignored by the constant flow of staff for an additional 30 minutes -- altho' both the maitre d' and head waiter regularly glanced towards us, then quickly looked away. - when an unsmiling & clearly unfriendly server finally brought menus, he all but threw them onto our tiny table and left -- no "would you care for some water or a beverage?" - 20 minutes later, the headwaiter finally took our order, pretending he couldn't understand my perfectly-accented French when I ordered "du l'huitres, svp". This 1960s standard disdain for Anerican customers is SO rude and old!!! - the only bright spot in this disgusting display of anti-foreigner vile lack of service was the excellent oysters and my partner's duck confit. Apparently the cooks were not told to spit in our food; -30 minutes (no exaggeration) of being again ignored despite nearly pleading to have our main dishes cleared, dessert menus were at last dropped in front of us; - we decided to opt out of dessert when it became obvious that dessert would clearly take another two hours of being ignored before dessert would be ordered, presented, and cleared. We were then constantly and intentionally ignored for yet another 35 minutes as we repeatedly tried to get our "check" ("notre compte, s'il vous plaît?"). The maitre d' finally stopped bowing and scraping to his longtime customers to print our bill 10 feet from us, then passed it to our waiter -- who promptly crumpled it up and instead brought the payment machine to a French customer's table instead. - 20 minutes later, he finally came to our table, misprinted one bill, printed another and finally took our payment -- all the while mumbling and cursing (!!) in French. We have been fortunate to enjoy dining in some of the world's finest venues. Only twice have we been treated so badly: our first dinner in Paris in the late '90s, and last night at the appallingly unkind Brasserie Lipp. Fortunately for Lipp, their decent food, beautiful old decor, and ancient reputation will keep the suckers coming. I wanted to like Brasserie Lipp a lot based on very positive feedback from friends and family. However, my experience was just mediocre. Perhaps I ordered the wrong thing? Although I made my reservation quite a while back, my husband and I were seated in the very back left hand corner. Not very appealing. The people that were seated in the back beside us refused their seating, stating it was an insult to be seated there when the restaurant was half empty. Everyone in the back spoke fluent English and, it appeared, everyone in the front spoke fluent French. Our server after rushing us to make our order never came back to our table. My wife had duck confit with roasted potatoes. Brasserie Lipp was full of locals which was great to see. Lots of families having dinner, intermingled with tourists like ourselves. Service was pretty good. A little slow because all the tables were full but I don't blame the waitstaff. So the servers speak English, but they really won't try. This is old-school Paris after all. The menu was in French. Ah, well. But so what. This restaurant was actually better than it ought to be. The menu foregoes new fangled trends (it explicitly notes that salad is not to be ordered as a main dish) in lieu of classic French. We got seated immediately and got a very nice big glass of house wine. I ordered the chicken with fries. Loved the fries; they came out hot and crispy. The chicken was mostly a hit though surprisingly cooked a little more on the "well done" (i.e. moving to dry) side. It wasn't dry, but just on that border. STill, had a good flavor and a sizable portion as well. and the bread was better than anything you'd probably get in the US. The duck confit with roasted potatoes was also good. Waiter ignored us for 30-45 minutes. Finally took our order and acted like he did us a favor. Food was excellent. Waiter insulted us when we ordered dessert, saying we already had a lot of food. Waiter insisted on a tip. Not the custom in Paris but he pegged us as American (hard to get around that). We tipped him marginally, less than what we would have if he hadn't asked (which wouldn't have been much anyway, considering his behavior). This restaurant was recommended by our shuttle driver last trip but we didn't add it to our list until this trip and made sure to make a reservation. Very glad we did because they were very clear a reservation was needed to be seated. Once we cleared up that we did in fact have a reservation we were whisked away to our seats. The service was unique in that it was a different waiter who seated us, took our drink order, another took our food order, another brought our order, another brought our drinks, another took our dessert order, and another brought our desserts. All were very professional, I've just never seen so many servers doing so many roles during service My husband ordered the steak frites and I had the farm roasted chicken. Both were very good. The dessert that I can't say or spell and could only point to on the menu :) - was soooo good. We told them we were going to share and they split it for us which was very nice. Okay! I have to leave my review of this place because I was honestly very nervous about dining here because of all the bad reviews on how they treat Americans. I literally almost didn't go because of the bad reviews. Let's just say that I am very glad I went! Our server was very kind and friendly and didn't treat us any different than he would have treated a Parisian. They did not ignore us. They did not sit us in the back. They did not care if my French was not perfect. They did not care that I was an American. The service was wonderful, timely and the food was delicious. If you are looking for an authentic Parisian experience , Lipp can be your place! This is an iconic place. Famous poets, writers, politicians and intellectuals would come to eat from their " immutable " and classic Alsatian French menu. Today is more of a touristic spot but the ambiance "avec" colorful art deco murals is still fantastic...the food is great and the literary prize they promote every year still goes strong. In my humble opinion the place could undergo small renovation to regain its glamour, bur this is a detail. Food was really good, though. My green bean salad with hazelnut was to die for and the Brandade de Morrue (cod fish pie with mashed potatoes) very very tasty). Service is professional as it should be, waiters aways smiling and promptly helping us when we needed. I resented (just a bit) the fact that they didn't have the Chucrute de la Mer - seafood chucrute - as you can find at Lipp in Geneva - Switzerland. More like NYC than Paris. We wanted to try it for the history, and the fact that it is a five minute walk from our hotel. Ordered the razor clams to share as an app-- etherial! The best, most tender, succulent clams I have ever had. I could have eaten five plates of them, a baguette and a bottle of Sancerre and I would have been happy! There are 3 historic restaurants in the area worth coming to if you're visiting for the first time and this is one of them. Really loved the beef tartare. My oldest ordered fish for the first time and liked it. The mashed potato was also so smooth and creamy. Staff really needs to be better organized as they crowd around without any semblance of table assignment. So you'll have to ask more than once for something. Beware they charge you cover! Our waiter was quite funny and treated us very well. The ambiance was nice, we sat upstairs. The one thing is the lack of AC, but this is normal for places in Paris I loved the food. From the appetizers to the main dish. The steak was absolutely delicious, some of the best I've had. I love the way they cook the meat, traditionally French steak is cooked closer to rare. The entrecôte was amazing and I highly recommend ordering that. Overall, you should definitely give Brasserie Lipp a try it's a good change from all the super trendy modernized restaurants built for tourism that you find throughout Paris. My lovely bride and I stopped in for a late lunch on a weekday at the end of May. The ambience is old-school brasserie - very warm and inviting. Service was pleasant and attentive, even for a couple of American patrons whose French is pathetic. My better half ordered the sole meuniere, and she ate every bite. I had my standby, steak frites. The steak was a bit tougher than I expected, but the bearnaise sauce saved the day. Best frites we have ever had. For dessert, we recommend the Napoleon Cake and the Baba Rhum. The server was very rude and unaccommodating. The 3 Sole Grillad's that we ordered were full of bones and not filleted properly. The server did not care as he did not want to deal with our table due to the fact that he hates children. I also got the escargot to start (when in Paris!) and two glasses of a white wine that I do not recall (alas). As I was dining solo, I was put at a seat right by the door area -- which meant that most of the diners who were waiting were staring (hungrily, I imagine) while I ate. After spending a week in Paris, this was the most authentic French restaurant at which I ate dinner. Most places I found were super welcoming to tourists, but this place I found to be not as warm. I don't know if there is a dress code but they took one look at us and said we had to sit outside. Not a big deal given most European restaurants do not have air conditioning, it's probably cooler outside. This menu was entirely in French so be prepared with a translating app if you don't speak the language. I'm not complaining because we were in France so why should we expect English on everything. The waiter was not thrilled when he saw we were Americans and did not speak French, however the tides turned when he found out we spoke Italian, as he did as well. The escargot were full of flavor and delicious. For the main course we all got the roasted chicken as it was recommended by family who were previously in Paris. It was one of the best roasted chickens I've ever eaten. So I highly recommend this!! It was a good meal and an authentic Parisian experience. It's in the heart of Saint Germain, one of the most beautiful neighbourhood in Paris. I recommend to try the duck with the purée and don't miss cheeses and dessert.
