First time at this shop. Got a voicemail recommending a bunch of repairs on my wife's bike. I called back a left a voicemail authorizing all repairs. Waited a couple of weeks with no news so I stopped by the shop. They said they never heard back from me so hadn't done anything. I again authorized all repairs. Went to pick up the bike a few days later and only half of the recommended repairs were done. Again told me they didn't hear back from me! WTF? I guess you have to authorize repairs over the phone, in person, and maybe also in writing??? Bummer for them because I have over a dozen bikes. read more

Brought bike in for some fitting adjustments (free post-follow-up :-) ..due to the tune-up continuation and new handlebar and new saddle addition last week).. Nathan watched me ride in the back lot and then adjusted the Brooks saddle down, pushed it back and change the tilt to match my riding style. Then he raised the handlebar stem to give me more comfortable riding style. Asked for brakes to be adjusted and he did the adjustments super-fast in real-time, so I could get more the feel of prior road bike braking action. He gave me tips on brake handle positioning to be aware of in case that needed adjustment and tips on bike fitting for my youngest kid. I rode the bike for half an hour and it felt fantastic. The Brooks B17 saddle fits much better to my style and amazingly comfortable now. I've been putting Brooks Proofride on the bottom of saddle almost after every ride and it's now shaping to my body after 5 days of riding a couple of miles per day. Maybe my body weight (close to 200 lb), use of Proofride and warm weather riding is helping the saddle's shaping process, plus I am wearing Endura Humvee shorts (from Lee's cyclery) during the saddle break in period and Nathan's expert fitting coming together. Now just wish had more hours in a day to go cycling! Nathan's truly a master bike mechanic! Will be back later to check over fit after getting cycling shoes and getting night riding lights setup on youngest pup's bike. read more

I was traveling from Pennsylvania to Ft. Collins on vacation a weeks ago and I'd just had a custom mountain bike built by Meriwether cycles. Having never met before and with very little advance notice of the project, Johnny at Brave New Wheel allowed the bike to be shipped to their shop for assembly. The shop came highly recommended by a few other handmade bike builders in the Ft. Collins area. This accommodation made my visit all the more memorable by getting to ride the new bike for the first time in the Rockies. I really want to like this place... however, I've had too many bad experiences. I've been to this bike shop many times (8-10), bought many parts for my old vintage bike, but the people who work here are the worst bike snobs I've ever met. To be fair, they have actually been very helpful on a few occasions, but to illustrate why I hate this place, consider this story (which is one of many): I needed a part, they were my best bet for finding it locally and I like shopping local. I came in around 30 min before they close and was the only one in the store. After realizing they didn't stock it I went up to the lady at the counter and asked about ordering it, and she went to look up the price. Meanwhile a friend of hers came in and started chatting her up. I didn't mind waiting a minute for them to have a convo, but after 5 mintutes of waiting the lady looked at me as if I had just walked in and said "sorry, but we're closing in 15 minutes, you'll have to come back tomorrow." wtf? All she needed to do was take down the part and my phone number! I think that can be done in 15 min. I was so insulted I said "ok", left and bought the part online. I have been ignored or forgotten about in a similar manner on at least 4 other occasions. They have a good thing going, and I would go there more often if they were nicer, but for now I try avoid it at all costs and buy my parts at other shops or online. read more

Great, friendly, reasonably priced service at this bike shop!! I recently bought a cruiser bike at a garage sale that had bent rims. I did the best I could to true the rims with my skills but it wasn't great. I took the bike to Brave New Wheel to have them do a professional job straightening out the rims and to also install a bike rack so I can use my cruiser to go grocery shopping (the bike doesn't have the typical mounting points designed for the rack I already have). I was greeted when I first wheeled the bike in and I explained what I needed. The staff got the bike up on the rack, took the wheels off and quickly trued the rims, then installed the rack adding a few clams they had in stock. The whole time the staff were entertaining me with their banter and including me in the conversation. From walking in the door to paying and walking out was a total of 35 minutes; a very reasonable amount of time. I am very pleased with the work the team did and will definitely be back. I went in to buy a rear tire and after the purchase I asked to use a tire lever to swap tires myself. The employee said it was shop policy to not loan tools out and that they could do it for $9. I scoffed at not being able to borrow a tool I probably won't 'damage' and asked for my money back on the tire. Literally 60 seconds after purchasing the tire the employee points at the sign behind him saying "store credit only on returns". Seriously awful gouging. read more

Best place to get a tune in town. Prices reasonable for services provided, and my bike always rides great after I have it serviced which is my primary concern. Fast, friendly, thorough. There are quite a few options in old town, but I cannot say enough about my experience here. I dropped by unannounced, they took my bike and said they would take care of it. They did. Mikayla called me and reported what she found. I didn't know what was wrong with my bike, but she found it and fixed it. She was thorough and friendly. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I rode out of there never feeling better about my bike. It rode like a dream, better than the day I bought it. It is so important that we give positive kudos when they are due. I stopped in to Brave New Wheel on a whim while riding through town yesterday. I wondered if they would take a quick peek at my brakes, as they were a hair out of adjustment. While I am comfortable completing most rudimentary maintenance items on my car, bikes scare me and I almost always make them worse. They took my bike in immediately without an appointment and adjusted my brakes on the spot, which they didn't have to do. Exceptional service, truly service with a smile and it cost me $10. I will be giving these folks my business when it comes time for a tune-up on my new bike. read more

Miscommunication without apology. Made assumptions about what I wanted and installed parts without asking me. Didn't install parts they told me they would. Poor communication and no apology. I brought in an old mountain bike I had found that I wanted to convert to a single-speed. The guy helping me was plenty friendly and informative, and helped me figure out what parts I needed. I made it clear to him that I was plenty mechanically inclined, but that I wanted them to install a new bottom bracket along with the new single-speed crankset I was having them order. I also had them order break-pads but told them I would install them myself. This was on Wednesday, maybe Thursday. They told me the parts would come in on Tuesday and that they do all their ordering on Monday. They said if I wanted to change anything I should let them know before that Monday. I left them a message about a change I wanted to make on Sunday night. They claim to have never gotten that message, who knows? Anyway, I was going on a trip on Tuesday and they said I could drop of my bike on Monday. Well, they were closed that Monday for a work party. A simple forgetful mistake on their part. I had someone else drop off the bike for me. I get a call from them on Saturday saying everything was installed and that the bike was ready to be picked up, at which point and asked them to clarify what crank they had installed (assuming they have gotten my message). Well, they hadn't because like I said they claim they had never gotten the message. All I know is that I left one. I reluctantly gave in and told them that I would take the crank they had installed as they could not return it since it had been installed. They also helped me figure out a new rear wheel and get the spacing right. Thats pretty much the only part of this they got correct. So I came into pick up my bike and I saw that the break pads were installed. I told the mechanic (not the guy I had ordered the parts from) that I never had arranged from them to install the break-pads. They wanted to charge me $10 per set for installing them. He took $10 off the labor charge (still charging me $10 rather then $20 for installing them, which if you was me is an insane amount to charge for such a simple task). He was not nice or apologetic about it at all. He just stared at me blankly and said "well it was on the ticket, but I guess we can take $10 off for you." Also, they didn't install a new bottom bracket like I had asked because they said the bike did not need one. Throughout all this there was no apology. I called the mechanic up when I got home, simply to express my frustration and he got uppity with me saying that I called him up just to accuse him personally, which was not the tone of what I was saying at all. He said "So what do you expect to get out of this?" I told him that I had heard good things about their shop and I wanted to support a local business, and that I thought they should know how terrible my experience was so that they could fix it with future customers. He told me that I went about it all wrong. He told me that I should have gone through only one person rather then trying to communicate with multiple of their employees. Never did I ask to speak to different people, but even if I had, that is up to the business, not the customer to keep things organized. He told me that instead of changing my mind on what parts I wanted (which I only did with the crankset) I should have sat down and made a list of all the parts I needed and had it all clearly laid out. Well as far as I am concerned that is, again, up to them. How am I supposed to know what parts would work, or what parts are better? They are the professionals (at least in theory). This is all pretty unfortunate. I hear the raves they put on are pretty good though! read more

These guys recently built me a bike from a vintage frame and new parts. They were really helpful picking out the individual components (tires, seat, wheels) without being pushy or only selecting the most expensive stuff. It only took about a day or so to build the bike and they've been great about doing follow-up inspections to make sure everything is working. I'll definitely be going back here for any future bike needs. read more

My buddy and I drove to Ft. Collins for a day ride and brewery tour. On the way to Ft. Collins, his bike fell off the bike rack and appeared to be a disaster. We stopped at Brave New Wheel for help and Nate the owner came to our rescue. He was very, very helpful in repairing the bike and then planned our route. Best bike shop in town! A campus located store, after charging me for one repair, told me i needed more work done and the cost was gonna be about 50$ on top of the 40$ previous "repair." Unhappy with that bike shop (recycled cycles) I went to Brave and they helped me immensely fixing the bike in 10 minutes compared to the weekend the rival shop was going to need to "fix" my bike. Better yet the final charge was 8$. Wish I would've went there the first go around. read more

Bought a Surly ECR there last winter, setup was fast and on point for the fit. They also set up the bike to run tubeless, dozens of punctures later, tires are still at pressure. Great shop! They are able to repair a wide variety of bikes of different styles and vintages. I have brought in bikes from the '60's to the 2000's and have always received great service. They have/or you can order parts to keep your bike rolling and have a free air compressor in the alley to top up your tires. You may need to wait a minute or two to be helped, but the folks here will get your bike fixed here for a good price and a quality job! read more

Bought a Trek 820 there in 2011. Took it in for repairs and upgrades over the years. Always got warehouse prices. The repairwork was top-notch and the labor fees were perfectly fair. I no longer live in Fort Collins, but called up their shop today and asked about which bike I should buy. They looked at the two models and gave their expert opinion, free of charge. I had bought a bike over the summer with a couple of minor problems. My friend recommended tihs shop to me and decided to call to see if I could bring my bike in. When I entered the shop, one of the workers looked at me and did not acknowledge me. His responses were very brief and the experience was not friendly by any means. Got my bike back the following day and did not get any explaination about the work done. I noticed that one of tasks I asked to be done had not and was told that they needed to order the part and that it would not be ready for a couple of days. One of the problems with my bike was with the brakes and after biking I realized that the brake fixed was slightly better but not enough to stop which is a huge safety issue. The only thing going for this shop is the low prices and quick turn around time. However, customer service and services are mediocre. Would not recommend this shop and you would probably have better luck somewhere else. read more

I have been to Brave New Wheel twice recently, both times were a great experience. First time I needed a new rim, tire, and tube for my bike. I shopped around at several other places across town, Brave New Wheel beat the price of the next best offer by 20 bucks and was very friendly about it. The next time, the front forks of my bike was broken so again I shopped around town. The first "student friendly" place where I went told me that I had to take it down by their other shop on horsetooth, I said that I could not because this was my only ride. He looked very bothered and said that maybe if I wait around they might be able to get one delivered this evening. The next place I went to again did not seem that interested in my business, but told me that if I waited a week they could do it for 90 bucks. I went to BNW again, and they greeted me as I came into their building (none of the others did), were nice to me when discussing my problem, and fixed it that day for 70 bucks (again 20 dollars cheaper). Twice I have shopped the bike shops around Foco and found BNW to be the only ones without an attitude problem, prompt service, and averaging 20 dollars less cost for me. It's a no-brainer, take your bike here. read more

I had just bent my crank to timbuckthree and came in with a hundred bucks, ready to take the hit for a replacement part. Ended up with a simple brooks cover I can't get at home that he helped me test on a B17 to make sure that was the correct of the two sizes they carried. I normally don't bother ti write reviews but I just had to for this place. I just got the perfect bike (1979 Schwinn varsity, ladies frame). I picked it out of their lot when it was dirty and missing a tire and they polished up the frame, replaced both the brakes, all the cables, tuned up the derailleur gears, and put new tires and tubes on it. White wall of course, to keep that original 1979 aesthetic. They had it done in a few days and all of that was just over $180. Not much for my dream bike, they also lowered the price on a new lock. They have much cheaper bikes as well, also more expensive ones too for whatever budget you're on. I also realized after a day of serious riding that the seat was much too low. I live close to the shop so I just brought it over, they adjusted it perfectly for no cost at all. It rides like an absolute dream. They do all minor adjustments like that, whether you bought it there or not for free. They have a great selection of new and used bikes, as well as contemporary and vintage ones. Pretty much whatever you want, but I especially recommend them if you want a good road bike particularly a restored old one. And the service/atmosphere is wonderful. Everyone who worked there was really excited when they saw how my bike turned out. It was just an awesome experience. I ride my bike everywhere but when they time comes to replace it I'm going back to Brave New Wheel. read more
