Since moving to Encinitas a year ago I have bounced around from one barber to another. Then I was lucky enough to find Laura at Bravehold. From the moment I walked in the door she was friendly and very helpful. Everything about my experience at Bravehold is perfect and easy. Making appointments couldn't get less complicated. You pick your barber and a time that works best for you and it just lands in your calendar like magic. That's your first sign that they've got things in order! Every time I've gone I've always been treated like an old friend the minute I walk in the door. Everyone says hi and it's always genuine! If I've ever had to wait it's never been long. I dont know about you, I don't want to see my barber rushing through haircuts, especially not my own! If getting your hair done in 15 minutes is your thing, head to Fantastic Sam's. My barber (who I can't name for fear y'all will hit him up and make it impossible to get in) is the master of the fade! I know I have difficult hair to cut, it's super straight and will stick up like a porcupine if you're not careful. That worry is a thing of the past. Not only do I look good walking out the door but my cut remains good until I return. That's something that gets overlooked. It's why I keep coming back! The conversation is always great! I end up cracking up a bit and I almost always learn something too. How can you not be on board with that?? After my cut they always wash, dry and put some product in so I'm ready to hit the ground running. They do everything just shy of breaking out the lint roller! 5 stars isn't enough in my opinion so here's a couple extra And one last thing, when you get great service like they give don't skimp on the tip. Ok so this is the one time that I really wish I could give an establishment more than five stars, but due to limitations of Yelp we'll have to leave it at five. This place is the most fantastic spot in Leucadia, which is know for an abundance of fantastic spots. The atmosphere really couldn't be better. The lively and a little edgy conversation(everyone is invited to chime in), the incredible stylings, great music, the décor- it all blends in such a way that makes you grateful for having the opportunity to be there. Laura and Georgie are cool AF. I don't know the other staff members as well, but also get good vibes from them. Bravehold does a great job of moderating the conversation to be age appropriate if kids are present, I've been taking my own son since childhood- now in his early 20's. Honestly the best part about being there happens when i arrive 10 min early combined with those occasional times when Laura is running a few minutes behind schedule. It is like hanging at a cool social gathering for awhile and having a sip of premium Tequila while I wait. And I haven't even got to the actual haircut part yet. Everybody strolls out of there looking substantially better than they did upon entrance. They take such care to ensure a proper cut and are very attentive to what their customers are looking to do. Each cut comes with a wash and a blow dry. I have never had a shave or beard trim there, but I can and do recommend the nose hair treatment for an extra sawbuck, really keeps you super trim there. A generous 3 stars, mostly because despite spending 30 minutes of my appointment in the store, not a hair on my head was cut. So cannot comment on the quality of the haircut. I'm sure it would have been great. A quick rundown of the facts of my experience, draw your own conclusions: Showed up on time, entered the premises with my mask on, but nobody was wearing masks inside including the barbers, so took it off as at least I was confident in my own vaccination status. Received a cursory "hi" from the two barbers present and sat down. 10 minutes into my appointment time, I stopped counting the "f-bombs" being dropped by the female barber. Sure, its a "hip" place and I'm no prude, but not necessarily the first impression I was expecting. 15 minutes into my appointment the barber with whom I assumed my appointment was (nobody introduced themselves or even spoke to me) didn't seem to be that far through his current client. Pulled up my email confirmation to make sure I had the right day and time (although presumably they would have mentioned if they weren't expecting me) - yep, I was there right on time. Played with the shop dog for a bit. 20 minutes in, I started to check appointments at other area barbers. Cellphone signal pretty weak, so it took a bit longer. 25 minutes in, I'd secured an appointment elsewhere on another day. It looked like perhaps the barber was finishing up the previous client, but since I had a babysitter at home taking care of my kids, I knew I wasn't going to be able wait longer, so I left. Georgie (the barber with whom I'd made an appointment) texted me over 30 minutes into my appointment window indicating he was now available but I told him I'd take my business elsewhere. He blamed the previous client on being 15 minutes late (although he spent 30 minutes of my appointment time working on him, so clearly not all down to the clients lateness) and said he doesn't rush haircuts. I evidently wasn't a "good fit" for Georgie (his words, over text, if you can believe it). I wished him good luck running his business. Anyway, I'm sure your experience will be different, hopefully you'll be a "good fit" for these folks. read more

I'm new down here and needed a cut so I made an appointment (wait list, yes they are a small shop & busy) and walked in. Had Laura and immediately loved the vibe. Cool, unpretentious and very clean. Waiting a few and sat in her chair. This is the kind of place that people know your name and what you like. Offered a beer, Modelo.. perfect. And then she started in with the cut. In between snips I loved the talk in the shop. Fun, snarky and filled with love. I already felt at home. She finished up and I took a look. Best cut ever. Clean and on point. It is very easy to make an appointment, she always runs on time, and she works very hard to be available for her clients. Her attention to detail and barbering skills are second to none. This was a nice Barbershop located near the beach. A few pros and cons: Pros: they offer you a complimentary beer - can't be complaining about that. Though I am uncertain whether they are doing that legally? Con's: I went for their premium beard trim and they used an electric shaver, no straight edge blade which was a bit of a surprise. Also the price was through the roof considering it was just an electric shave. This place is by far the best barbershop I've ever been to. Georgie did a killer job on my hair and beard and was an absolute perfectionist when it came to making everything look clean and exactly the way I wanted it. I didn't get a haircut from Laura but overhearing her knowledge while she was working with the other customer in the shop made it clear that whoever cuts your hair knows their stuff and you'll walk out feeling great.
