I am Frequent customer at Bread and Roses for their sliced cake. This time I bought a whole cheese cake for my mother's birthday. It's so fresh it felt soft and mousse like. Delicious! The top was blueberry purée like jelly and there is no cookie base. I must say, the person that helped me has really nice icing skills. (Let say I got a cake somewhere else the month before and the icing skills was not this great. It was off centred and messy.) :P Overall, I brought this cake home to one happy mom and she enjoyed the cake very much. Only one comment from her was not topped with strawberry purée lol. This cake got quite a bit of height as well. The price is reasonable $22. Doesn't feel too heavy when you cut a small slice out to eat. Having that 2nd slice maybe too much lol. I hope they have more variety. Every time i come in, it Seems like the selection of cakes are the same. They may change up the fruits in their fruit tart due to seasons. A neighbourhood gem amongst a selection of bakeries in Bloor West Village. They have fresh breads, pastries, cakes and sandwiches. So far I've tried the danishes, coffee, bread and cookies. I've enjoyed them all and have bought them multiple times. It is advised to go earlier in the day because they often run out of goodies in the late afternoon. I really enjoy their cookies, especially their honey oatmeal cookies, which I find to be unique and not something I see common elsewhere. A little dangerous that they're $1. I came in looking for a cake to take home for a friend's birthday. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the really friendly service from everyone working. In the midst of the current pandemic, everyone is a little on edge so I appreciated the service even more! They had a few different cakes to choose from and I ended up picking this beautiful raspberry chocolate cake. They wrote a message on the cake for me and I was in and out within 5 minutes. The price was also great (smaller cakes are $22 and the larger ones are $35). Unfortunately, I didn't get to try the cake but my friend said it was amazing. On a nice sunny day I was walking around the Bloor West looking for something to eat. I decided on a staple, Bread and Roses, for the homemade Egg Salad Sandwich. Upon entering you walk into cramp quarters, the counter feature a glass window showcasing of all the bake goods. Once you walk in you can smell the fresh bread and pies. Expect a line up during lunch. Unfortunately the line can be slow but, the Sandwich is being made fresh. I order my Egg Salad Sandwich. Unfortunately they only had Whole Wheat left. The bread was still sliced fresh. It was topped with fresh lettuce and mayo. The bread was so soft and the crust had some crisp. The egg salad was nice and creamy. This is definitely one of my favorite places for a sandwich. I didn't get one this visit but, the bake goods are great, especially the pie! read more

If you love pumpkin pie, this is the place to go! When I was new in Toronto I googled the best pumpkin pies in TO to complete my Thanksgiving meal. And I am so glad I did. I've been coming here since the 90s. Bread and Roses is a Bloor West Village establishment that I grew up with. The soups are top notch (someone told me its the same recipe from the old days when the bakery was owned by a Polish family). However, my past few recent visits haven't left me with decent sandwiches. A soup and sandwich at B&R was always my go-to when going for lunch. Today I think it will be my last time. I usually get avocado in my sandwich. Luckily I was watching the server make my sandwich as she nearly put all black avocado into my sandwich. Adding avo to a sandwich is an extra cost and I'm not sure the person eats avocado... but black avocado is no bueno. I want to vomit even thinking about it. I asked kindly for fresh avocado and she delivered. However, when I got home to open my sandwich, the pieces of tomato she chose were the middle pieces, very light and hard and mostly stem. It wasn't a busy moment in the restaurant... I think it's fair I should be getting fresh pieces of product when I'm paying close to 20$ for a soup and sandwich. (PS. the sweets there are the best. There's certainly not a lot to complain about, I truly enjoyed my experience here and honestly can't wait till the next time I'm in this neighbourhood and can visit again. I give it a 4.75. The staff was really friendly and although they didn't have one of tye ingredients to make the drink that I wanted to order, the lady was willing to accommodate and made my drink completely customized! It was quite busy when I arrived and as a matter of fact, it was busy for the entire 5 hours I was there doing homework (works out great that their Wi-Fi is reliable). Every time I looked up from my seat there was a line up at the door, maybe it's because it was a Saturday? I was always scared off by hoards of European seniors on the patio and crowding the front counters. I finally decided to "woman up" and push my way in there. I had a baby in a stroller and figured if it was too busy, I'd grab lunch to go. To my surprise, it was relatively quiet inside and I even spied a few empty tables that I could sit and park my carriage. I ordered a toasted turkey sandwich ($6.99) on multigrain bread with extra pickles on the side, a coffee ($1.55) and a chocolate cookie ($0.75). Service was quite friendly and delightful. They delivered my lunch tray to my table after I ordered. The turkey sandwich was delish - the addition of cranberry sauce was a nice surprise! Can't say enough about this place. From the warm greetings of the staff to the deliciousness of the food. What I love is how fresh and warm all the food is on a daily basis. What really gets me is the croissants and some of the desserts that you have to wake up early for. Bread and Roses is an average bakery with a large selection. I made the mistake of coming in here wearing a toque and carrying a backpack on a cold day. The girl managing the line completely skipped me. I finally realized that I must've looked homeless, and found someone else who was willing to wait on me. She seemed to know what happened and compensated by being super nice. (They must have a problem with homeless people here... Either in attitude or challenges with begging). The food here is hit and miss. Cleanliness here is hit and miss. The cinnamon rolls are huge, but mostly just bread. The cookies are better than many, but not the best. A must-visit when you're in Bloor West Village. I've been a customer for a few years now, and their staff is always friendly. Yummy treats for folks of all ages - the clientele mostly local stay-at-home moms with their kids, local senior citizens and high school kids (during school year). Their freshly baked breads are fantastic and if you order a sandwich to stay in to eat, they will cut you nice, thick, slices from their fresh loaves. It gets a little busy during peak times (lunchtime, especially). There is lots of seating room inside and in the back, and a cute patio with bistro tables outside in the summer. Bread and Roses has been a staple in Bloor West Village for many years. It changed owners many years ago and that's where the problem arises. The staff is friendly but many are not fluent in English. Today, I went to put an order in for their amazing danishes. They did not understand what I was saying. They boxed 10 danishes! That is not what I came for. I paid in advance and after raising my voice and repeating myself many times, they finally understood my request. This place has great sandiwches and soups. They are large and plentyful and full of flavour. The staff is great too. I often go at lunch time and have either a Roast Beef or Turkey Sandwich (with cranberry sauce). My other favourite is one of their Soups of the day! Oh! and the pumpkin pies (large and small) are excellent (when they are "in season" of course. There's an amazing selection of breads too. This is my 2nd visit to this locally popular bakery cafe. Lineup was really slow though there were 4 counter staff, 3 women and 1 man. The vanilla cake with strawberries didn't have enough whipped cream for my admittedly over the top gourmand standards and the cake slice was a bit stale. My daughter's carrot cake also didn't have enough cream cheese frosting for her tastes. So they were both good, but not outstanding. My other younger daughter who isn't as fussy as we two, gobbled her blueberry cheesecake and vacuumed up the rest of the carrot cake and of my mocha coffee, that tasted so burned and bitter I couldn't finish it. I ended up with the other daughter's latte, which was better tasting. Given the really bad burned mocha, I can't give this cafe more than 3 stars. It's OK, but it's no Starbucks. read more
