If I had to describe Bread Basket to a friend, I would say that this cafe and bakery is the shabby chic version of Indy's Cake Bake Shop, minus the glitter. I have never seen so many varieties of cake in one building! It made it difficult for this solo diner to choose just one slice. I ended up going with the blackberry and wine chocolate cake with a vanilla buttercream frosting. My oh my...this piece was a sugary monster. It had four layers! While I did enjoy all of the layers of cake and frosting, I really couldn't tell that its ingredients included blackberry and wine. The Bread Basket Cafe moved to Danville about seven years ago, but despite having lived in town for much longer, I hadn't visited yet. I tried once, but didn't check the hours and learned they were closed (Sundays and Mondays) upon arrival. They also operate for brunch hours only (7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.) Earlier this week, I read that the cafe was recently recognized in People magazine for its cinnamon roll french toast, which was named the number one breakfast food in Indiana. I happened to be home on a Thursday afternoon, so I stopped into the old house-turned-restaurant around 2:30 p.m., right before closing time. I've heard about the fantastic soups so I got a small cup of the soup of the day (chicken noodle) and the summery grilled cheese to go with it. The soup tasted fresh and the grilled cheese was AMAZING - and I say this as someone who is a connoisseur of grilled cheese sandwiches. It featured mozzarella and provolone, tomatoes, and homemade pesto on their made from scratch honey oat bread. Forget the french toast - this sandwich puts Bread Basket Cafe on the map. As I was waiting, I made the mistake of checking out the display case with all of the baked goods. One of the staff noticed me over there drooling and offered a "tour" of the selections. After an unnecessarily long deliberation, I ended up going with the deliciously sweet and moist blackberry wine chocolate cake. It's probably a good thing I work downtown and can't get here during operating hours most days because I'd likely be here too much. If you are looking for a unique brunch location, this place is for you. Bread Basket is located right by the historic Danville town square. It is in an old little house. It may feel weird when you first walk in because you do walk through the kitchen. But once you are in the seating area, you realize how unique this little gem is. The decor is very rustic and the chairs are all a little different. Food: there is a wide variety of food. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you want breakfast be sure to either go before 10 on the weekdays or they serve breakfast all day on Saturday. I have never had anything from their lunch menu. However, the breakfast sandwich French toast cinnamon roll are amazing. Price: the pricing is average for a brunch place. It isn't overly pricey. Especially since you get endless amounts of coffee. Service: The service is great here. I have almost always gotten seated right away. They always make sure you have enough coffee and water. The last time I went, they were down a cook so the food took longer than normal. They did end up giving us free cookies because we had to wait. We always try to eat here but forget it is breakfast and lunch only. Today victory was ours. We got right in this adorable place. The decor is great and so welcoming. The menu has so many delicious items but I went w the half sandwich half salad combo. I got the chicken salad sandwich and salmon salad. My husband got the dill turkey sandwich and Greek salad and my daughter got a plain turkey and cheese sandwich. Service was so prompt and friendly. My husband and I visited for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We were seated right away and the menu while not large had enough choices that we were each able to pick a sandwich. I had split pea soup with my sandwich. It was very good! The Cold Brew coffee was great and I enjoyed it while waiting for our food. We took three pieces of cake to go and share with our family. Home style with a modern twist is how I'd describe the food at Bread Basket. I had the special, mushroom chicken and rice soup, which reminded me more of a risotto than soup. It's thick and has lots of pieces of mushroom and chicken, so you definitely can expect a hearty cup or bowl of soup. I also had a portobello mushroom sandwich. Which was cooked on a fresh piece of toasted bread, and had the most delicious and fresh heirloom tomatoes topped on the cheese. The atmosphere is in the house, it is very cozy hardwood floors and has that small town comfort feel to it. The pies are insanely good. I opted for the pumpkin cream pie which was very very good. The cinnamon rolls, which I did not have or huge and looked very very very good. My waitress was super nice but also very busy. First time in Danville and first time at the Bread Basket. Stopped by for breakfast this morning. The joint was jumping. Entering is a bit odd, you come in the back door (it is a converted house) and you walk through the kitchen to the hostess. She wasn't really a hostess. She told the party of four ahead of us to "take a look around and see if there is an open table" and she told us the same thing. That was sort of odd, but luckily there was an empty table and we sat down. Our server was very nice and was quick to fill our drink orders. The menu is not huge, but it has everything you could possibly want for breakfast, from sweet to savory. I had two eggs, home fries and a half order of the biscuits and gravy. It was cooked exactly how I ordered it (over easy eggs) and the food was delicious. We all enjoyed our breakfast. The space is sweet, nicely decorated and good lighting. Plenty of pies and cakes and bread if you want something to go. One small thing, they have cute salt and pepper shakers on the tables (ours was a fox and a rabbit or something) but you have to be careful because the salt comes out so fast that I almost poured a teaspoon of it onto my eggs. Stopped by this hidden gem today in the hopes of grabbing a delicious brunch... I was not disappointed! The interior of the building was quaint and cozy with festive decorations and a roaring fireplace. I decided to order the Breakfast Sandwich, while my friend ordered the Smoked Salmon Omelet. Both meals came out quickly and tasted divine! All the ingredients were so fresh and we were stuffed after finishing our dishes!! I would definitely recommend to get one of their sweets too (even if you go in the morning!) Specifically, they have a variety of mini cakes that were $7 a piece. The service was efficient but not rushed, each staff member we encountered was sincerely kind and the food was absolutely amazing. Their cold brew coffee is outstanding and I highly recommend it. The menu has something for every palate and they tweak the "every day standards" and add their own special touch to elevate the menu items to a more gourmet dining experience. This local cafe in Danville has the charm of a bed and breakfast with a delightful bakery attached. They do a lot of things right. The baked goods I tried (the delicious Harvest Moon pie) were tasty and the variety makes it hard to decide. The staff are welcoming. The building has a ramp for access. The interior is decorated with a of style that goes with the food. I was in a bit of a rush, so after a wait to be given a menu, I ordered the chicken salad croissant with an upgrade to the raw vegetables. While waiting for my meal, I decided to peruse the baked goods case so that I could take some dessert home since my time constraints wouldn't let me stay for the final course. I picked up some items and they packaged them, even providing refrigeration and reheating instructions. As I returned to my table, the waitress informed me that my meal would be out soon...and it was. The sandwich I ordered was served on a delightfully buttery croissant. The chicken salad was chopped to an appropriate size for the sandwich. I liked that there were plenty of sliced grapes to help keep the sandwich moist. There were also bits of apple and toasted pecans for crunch to give the sandwich some texture. I have seen more generous portions of the filling elsewhere, but this amount seemed appropriate for anyone who has intentions of saving room for dessert! The upgrade from chips to the raw veggies was a good option too. There was a nice variety of colorful raw bites and the dip had a tangy element that was different from ranch I have had elsewhere. My only negative was that waiting. I was greeted by one staff member and told I could sit anywhere I liked. After a wait, another staff member brought my menu and took my order. Then another helped me with my dessert selection. I thought I needed to wait for the waitress that brought my menu to ask for my bill, but she was helping another patron. Turns out the one who helped with my desserts then took over my station and brought my bill. All a bit confusing and could have cut my wait if I knew that any of the staff could have helped me (apparently). Traveling to Danville on business and looking for something a little more unique for a late breakfast/early lunch. Thanks to fellow Yelper's, I found just the spot. This house turned bakery/cafe offers a wide variety of homemade goodies. The ladies are exceptionally friendly and made me feel welcome. I wasn't sure if I was going to eat there or carry out, but they offered me a menu and gave me the best service anyone could possibly expect. I was going to get a breakfast sandwich to go, but after hearing about their turkey sandwich lunch special, it was a no brainer. The waitress told me they offered it last week and it was so good they sold out! It is a nice amount of turkey served on apple bun, smeared with a generous amount of cream cheese, topped with bacon and apple butter. Seriously, I've never had anything like it! The sandwich also came with a bag of kettle chips and the waitress even put a cookie in for free since it was my first visit. We were passing through Danville and stumbled upon this wonderful cafe with delicious sandwiches, bread and baked goods! We had a delightful lunch in the charmingly decorated dining room, all the while enjoying the smell of the freshly-made bread that was baking in the kitchen! We followed up our lunch by splitting a HUGE piece of Snickerdoodle cake. This cake was so good that I have since dreamed about it. It had the kind of thick frosting that is sugary and almost like a candy or fudge-like consistency; i.e., the frosting could just stand alone as candy. It was unbelievably good! Scrumtralescent! When I first started working in Hendricks County, I asked around to find everyone's favorite local eats. The bread basket was atop many lists, and for good reason it has to be one of the best breakfast places I've had! The highlights were the cinnamon roll French toast and the biscuits and gravy. Solid effort for the B&G as the biscuits were fresh and flaky and he homemade gravy was full of meat! The CRFT was divine, it kicks you in the mouth sugary sweetness. We ordered our wedding desserts from the Bread Basket and absolutely loved the assortment provided! Coming from the food industry, I was very selective for our wedding desserts.  Everything that we sampled from the Breadbasket had a very fresh texture (retained moisture) with both traditional and trendy flavor pairings.  The buttercream frosting gave the perfect finish to the cupcakes and cake! I got here just before 11am on Saturday (mind you, they're closed Sun/Mon) and parked in the back (free parking! I then got to walk through the kitchen and register and to the front where the tables are. It's a house turned bakery/cafe. In the warmer months, the patio is available for seating too. Like other yelpers have commented, the service is awesome. They are super friendly and the place is so homey and the smell of the food fills the place. Selection is great, you want sweet? you want savory? Mix of both? Yes they have it. I have yet to actually get the goods from the bakery (pies, breads, YUM) but I will soon! They make their own batter for the dishes and everything seemed so fresh. I ended up getting the yogurt side, belgian waffle and the biscuit and gravy. I knew I wanted to have leftovers for home! Yogurt was great - not too sweet, not too sour with a few fruit garnishes. The Belgian waffle was very tasty, lightly dusted powdered sugar with a few berries. The biscuit and gravy was fantastic. Can not go wrong. Also on holidays and some weekends, they have specials like quiches and special breads, which my friend got and she liked it a lot too. So much so she wanted a whole loaf of the special bread (cranberry orange?). There were many other french toasts, cinnamon bread french toast, etc. etc. In summary, I highly recommend this place.
