Breakaway was an easy 5 star to give. My girlfriend and I stopped in for a late dinner one evening just before closing, but the staff was still super friendly and didn't rush us. I had the Ilombardia sandwich and it was amazing. Great flavor, good portions, and reasonable prices. The wine selection was better than I expected for the size of place. Breakaway has such a cool ambiance to it as well. It'd be great little spot to grab coffee with a friend, you could find a nook to get some work done, go enjoy the porch, or even have a date night with a really solid dinner. I've read the reviews that mention that the place is crowded for Sat/Sun brunch, and I get those concerns, but good places are going to attract business. Their breakfast menu looks incredible, so I'm not surprised they are busy during brunch times. Maybe just something to know going in, rather than getting upset that solid locations have a steady customer flow at peak times. read more

This place is a great place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I stayed for 4-5 hours and the service was welcoming and kind. Wifi service is good and espresso drinks are tasty. Server was very considerate and knew I had work to get done and I didn't feel like I was being rushed to leave. Definitely my new favorite spot! Also get the roots and shoots salad! read more

I would give it 0 stars but I am giving 1 star for the hostess who was breaking her back doing everyone's job. This is our 2nd Sunday brunch. It's 1:00 and all ketchup bottles are empty. Don't they refill them. Every table has salt with gunk on it. Our table had food chunks all over the floor. We will have to scrape our shoes outside. Hostess came back to check how we are doing. Waitress took order and brought bill but never checked on us. Same waitress both times. Our bowls were so dirty on outside. We watched every table of our waitress search for utensils and napkins. No extra coffee either. Best hostess though. Anyone should hire her. read more

This was my second experience at Breakaway Cafe and I have to say I was disappointed. Not only was the cashier rude, but my brownie that I paid over five dollars for was not included in my to go bag. The cafe was not busy and I felt neglected as a customer and that the service was lacking. The food that I did get was good, but the prices are way too high for poor service and forgotten items. I am an out of town customer and so I could not go back for my brownie. I expected better. read more

Nice menu,good crowd, 3 good size sandwiches with nice salad included, kids meal with fruit, really generous cup of soup. Brownie & cookie everything to go. $58. Neal's in Carrboro is our favorite at home deli. Breakaway was right up there with em. They would have gotten a 5 star rating had not the space cadet behind the counter not called our name when the order was ready. We sat waiting for our "to go" order an extra 20 min. After hearing good recommendations for Breakaway we went yesterday. From the time we entered, stood in line to place our order and received our so-so food it took 65 minutes. A very large place that can't handle that volume of business. If the place is half full and there is a line at the counter, go someplace else. There are others in the same strip mall. So, I signed up for yelp this morning to leave this feedback (1st time online reviewer). I called this morning to get a gift card for my mother. The woman answering the phone was polite enough, but said "you'll have to come in person." I explained to her that I live in Indiana and that my parents live in the adjacent community of Briar Chapel, so obviously I can't do that. I politely asked if I could speak with the manager, she indicated she was the manager. So I said that I was in a couple of weeks ago, and that with their iPad check out system they were clearly tech savvy and that we should be able to work something out. No. So I asked if she was also the owner because really...we should be able to work this out...PayPal, Apple Pay, Venmo, etc. She asked if I could hold...I said sure...she put the phone down, I could hear the buzz of the cafe in the background. Ten minutes later someone came back, picked up the phone without saying a word and hung up. The food was really just ok when I was there, and if they're busy, service is disjointed and slow, but my parents like it and it is one of only a limited number of breakfast options. I sincerely hope the owner reads this and takes both comment to heart, and the opportunity to coach the manager. On principle I won't be back on my next visit. read more

I have eaten there on 5 occasions... Each time I have been rung up by the owner... He is someone who should not be at the front ringing people up or Having direct contact with the customers. He is rude and not friendly at all. He did not say Welcome back, or hello or thank you for coming by! A coffee place should be welcoming and friendly and a place you want to spend time at. Enjoying and wanting to bring your friends to relax and stay a while. Spending your money on their coffee and pastries . Atmosphere and Attitude is key in making people want to come back. We really wanted to like this place, but our visit was pretty disappointing. I had read great reviews about the Breakaway Cafe and have been looking forward to trying it for about a month. We decided to drive out for brunch. Parking is good, and they have a nice outdoor area. They have a pretty extensive menu, and serve breakfast most of the day. We placed our orders, an assortment of breakfast dishes and went to find a table. Half of the empty tables still had dirty dishes on them, and the rest were covered in crumbs except for a large 8 top table and one near the kids play area. They were not busy, and there were plenty of employees hovering around the bar chatting, just none busing tables. The server who brought our food was nice. The meal itself was okay at best. The yogurt and granola was good. Eggs-fine. Potatoes-not great. Sausage-terrible. The presentation was nice, but the actual flavor was just meh. Not planning on returning. read more

Staff is very very unprofessional. Ryan, who acted as assistant manager was helpless and couldn't deal with the situation. The cashier didn't know what is included in the menu. I ended up paying 16$ extra that could have been saved, if she knew what she was typing in. The indoor cafe area was full of "FLIES", which is very unpleasant . $$$ The restaurant charge higher prices for breakfast and brunch comparing to other restaurants. Excited to try this new restaurant, unfortunately we were quite disappointed and won't be back. The food just wasn't good. Fries were ok but nothing I'd be back for. Sandwiches (ILombardia and Yorkshire) each of us only ate half and no one likes their food. Neither of us liked the seasoning on the mushy breading on the chicken for the ILombardia and the balsamic reduction made the sand which unbalanced and sweet. The Yorkshire was plain and lacked any flavor. Also not a fan of ordering at the counter and having to get your own refills of water. Avoid. Service is slow - took 10 mins before our order was taken; We ordered a hamburger, and the 'NY strip w/fries'; Burger came out in 5 mins: bun was cold, fries were cold, patty was good; NY Strip was abysmal. Poor browning - was warmed in a pan rather than a broiler, LOTS of stringy threads throughout, and an excessive amount of fat. When I provided feedback that the meat was of poor quality, the owner came out, and defended the 'cow', stated that it is actually a very high piece of meat, and insinuated that i don't know what i am talking about. Rather than stating something to the extent of 'sorry you didn't like the entree, what can we do to make it up to you', he left. When asking for the check, there was no consideration for the feedback we gave them, instead the owners wife came out, and added insult to injury to give them 'live' feedback rather than leaving online feedback.... Again, when mentioning that service was slow, fries were cold, and that the owner seemingly was unwilling to address our concerns, she smirked, and walked off. I understand that not every meal can be perfect, or always lives up to the expectation of a patron, but to come out and completely ignore the concern of a patron and instead having an attitude that the cow lived a good life, and therefore the meat is good, and if i wanted to have leaner meat, i should have taken a filet (which they dont have), is just very very poor..... Lovely relaxing Saturday night date dinner on a rainy evening. I had fish with mushroom polenta and grilled root vegetables, which was delicious. Everything was fresh, tasty, and well prepared. Breakaway is always good. My husband and I love Saturday morning oatmeal there, delicious sandwiches for lunch and tonight an outstanding meal of chicken pot pie and herb crusted cod. Andy and Amy, the owners, are a hard working couple who go the extra mile to make their customers happy. The restaurant is always clean and has a great vibe. We have taken our grandchildren there as well as friends and everyone finds something they like on the menu. Keep up the good work! read more

We walk the relaxing two miles on the nature trails from Briar Chapel to enjoy Breakaway Cafe. Review of Hot Chocolate, Coffee, Scones: Yum. Scones are delicious. Coffee and Hot chocolate are quite good. We brought our own card games to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. Dinner Review: Expensive, eclectic, casual, nicest waitress, draft beers are excellent and good choices, ridiculously delicious dinner (we had the spare ribs and chicken). We've been to up scale restaurants and we prefer the unfussy eclectic atmosphere, with high quality scrumptious food. read more

Great food when they have the ingredients to actually make the food on their menu. Five times in a row they have been out of an ingredient, from avocado (twice) to pomegranate to goat cheese to grains, and they don't post that they are out so you can make a decision without waiting in line. We love Breakaway! Especially the beer on tap selection, fresh foods (ty the tofu bang mi!) and delicious coffee. The beat part is the little kids play area in the back which is great for entertaining our little people (4 and 2) while we eat brunch. I have eaten here many times. In the last couple months it has grown inconsistent. I usually get the hummus plate this is the third time it has been mediocre to bad. In the past I found a mystery food item mixed in with my hummus, the next time it was so salty it was inedible, this final time the hummus had past its time and has started to go bad. Tried this place out for the first time on Sunday for breakfast at 9:30 am. They where out of pancakes and eggs Benedict, which seems weird. My food was good but my friends eggs where over cooked and toast was cold. Would have given them three stars, but it really irritated me when I found out a refill of coffee was a dollar.
