Sadly this studio is a little too far out of my way to be my home studio. That makes me a little sad because the space is incredible. Admittedly I am always nervous when going to New Haven because I never know where to park, which door to go in, which floor to go to, etc. However, the Breathing Room website is EXTREMELY helpful and lists all of the parking options and fees (including the lot right next to the building for only $3). I was there for a 3 day workshop and I had a great time. We were in the aerial studio (although the hammocks were hung up and out of the way) and it was really clean, there were tons of props and the windows and brick were so lovely. There are also plenty of bathrooms, changing areas, a couple of large sitting areas, tons of tasteful retail (shirts, yoga pants, jewelry, essential oils, mala beads, etc), a water bottle filling fountain, and hot tea in little cups is always available. There are 3 yoga rooms, all with their own personalities and lots of cubbies for storing things while you're taking classes. Although I didn't get a chance to visit this time around, there's also a float center that I've heard great things about. I haven't taken classes yet with any of the BR instructors, but I have heard only positive things from the students who have that I'm dying to come back to try some of them! The people who work at the reception desk are all very friendly and helpful and the owner Margot is very welcoming and has created an amazing space with great energy. I had only ever done yoga from YouTube videos until about a month ago. Then I decided to just go for it and get the unlimited 2-week new student package, and I have been going for at least 5 days a week since. I was a little intimidated at first, but all of the people there have such varied experience - from beginner to advanced. The classes are non-judgmental and the teachers encourage you to do what's comfortable. They have "consent chips" that you can flip over if you're not comfortable with the teacher adjusting your posture. I do think the class descriptions might be a little misleading. Form and Flow was my first class ever and I could hardly keep up. The classes that are for "all experience levels" sometimes require at least a little bit of knowledge of the poses in order to do what you're supposed to do. Other than that, I think it's safe to say that I'm obsessed. read more

Breathing Room is one of the best studios in New Haven. The space is really simple yet not plain (including subtle candles and a pretty ceiling), and the people who work here are very welcoming. I attended a class of Lisa's. She has a great energy and has lovely words and music. I would have appreciated a little bit more direction in terms of alignment or poses, but she was also great at reminding the group to try our best and to make this our own practice. $10 drop in cost. read more

I love this studio. It's above 2 restaurants so it's a little hard to find from the street, and don't be deterred by the smell of the Thai place, you can't smell it upstairs at all. The space itself is GORGEOUS. So cozy, and I'd say, minimalist. There's a small den area that you can relax in before your class and lots of cubbies for your belongings. The range of classes is nice, but I do wish they had a more diverse timing of their classes. So far all the teachers have been really nice and helpful, and the front desk staff has all been super friendly and genuinely interested in how your class went. From what I can tell they offer a really wide selection of workshops too, hosting other yoga instructors and teacher training on the weekends. There's some street parking outside, but there's also a garage right across the street. If you're really worried about it, there's a subpage on their website under Contact on the right-hand side. New students should check out their website/Groupon before going. They offer 3-4 week unlimited trials so new students can test out the classes before committing to a plan. read more

My Yoga, Mallorca- 2017 This yoga retreat was my first and what an amazing experience! From the location to the beautiful home to the amazing vegetarian food to the excursions! Margot and Julia were so thoughtful with every aspect of this journey making everyone feel comfortable and welcome. We had enough downtime between the glorious yoga classes that were catered to our needs and very informative. Bring a vegetarian I was in heaven with Chef Tobie's menu, such diversity and wonderful flavors. For me the most amazing aspects of the trip were the friendships that were formed and space and time during yoga practice were I was able to challenge myself and dive into a deeper more thoughtful practice going forward. Visiting from NYC and can't go a day without yoga, so booked the Candlelit Yoga class this evening at Breathing Room.. just wow!! The space is so pretty and clean - and the "hearth" room was just gorgeous. Grace was a fabulous guide and took us through a series of "cooling" postures that were gentle, relaxing and just what I needed after 3 of the hottest days of the year. I like this place a lot- good classes, nice space, and convenient location. Chris's strong meditative flow class is especially amazing. My one complaint is that they let people come into class late-8 minutes late! It really does disrupt the vibe especially when you are trying to warm up and practice your breathing. The teachers should at least speak with the latecomers to encourage them not to do that again. I will keep coming for select classes but because of this problem I don't think I would make this place my regular yoga spot. read more

This studio, which is somewhat under the radar given its newness, is a definite must-try. There are really great class choices, and my experience has been while the practices are of great quality, there is some innovation in the structure and flow of class. The only potential drawbacks I must note are that (a) they do not accept credit cards and (b) the studio is in a building and has no windows. That said, the atmosphere is quite calming and spacious, despite the lack of natural light. At $10 for students and $12 for others, the rates are much better than other studios. Breathing Room is - without a doubt - my favorite yoga studio in New Haven. The studio's new space on Chapel is spacious, bright, sunny, and clean. Owner Margot has left no detail to chance, and the result is really beautiful: a warm and inviting reception area, hardwood floors and an oranate ceiling in the studio, private dressing rooms, ample cubby space for personal belongs, etc. What I LOVE about Breathing Room: 1. At $16 per class, the drop-in fee is lower here than at other downtown New Haven yoga studios. You can buy a package of classes to save a few dollars per class, and credit cards are accepted. Purchase the class cards online or in person at the studio. 2. Mats, blocks, blankets, and straps are available to borrow at no additional charge. 3. Breathing Room is not just a fitness studio - it's a community of yogis, and there are always a number of fun events and workshops being offered. 4. Margot is a fabulous instructor. She's motivating and inspiring, one of my all-time favorite yoga teachers. Her classes are always delightful - challenging both mentally and physically and tremendously rewarding in the end. Margot is an extraordinary guide, and she offers helpful adjustments and positive encouragement along the way. After a class with Margot, I leave the Breathing Room feeling confident and proud of my practice and eager to continue to build on what I have accomplished. 5. Early morning (7 am - 8 am) and lunchtime classes are terrific for busy work schedules! If you're looking for a supportive environment in which to practice, this is the place for you! I can't compare Breathing Room to other New Haven yoga studios because I have never visited another New Haven yoga studio. While one of my friends from California was visiting in late spring, she commented that Breathing Room seems much more welcoming than studios in California. The teachers are excellent, and I have taken classes with all of them at some point or other. Some use music during class, and others prefer teaching without it. The experience is great either way, and each of them recognizes that those of us taking the classes are in different places with our bodies, whether it's physical strength, flexibility, or motivation. The space is beautiful, inviting, and filled with windows. Breathing Room provides mats, bolsters, blankets, straps, and blocks for people to use during class, along with shelving for mat storage. The community events are great, and I feel very blessed to have started taking yoga at such an amazing place a year and a half ago. read more

This was my first time to BRYC, but have a seasoned yoga practice. The studio is gorgeous and the building has a lot of character. It feels good to be in the space and the staff was friendly, but I wasn't thrilled with my class. The instructor (who was subbing) kept mentioning "upleveling" the pose and didn't incorporate any methodology, philosophy or breathing techniques, for example, to make it a yoga practice. It was a workout. Her pacing didn't allow for a full inhale/exhale with each movement, so the practice wasn't aligning body, breath and mind. I just slowed it down a notch and did my own thing. I loved the space and would like to give it another shot, but wouldn't take a class with the same instructor. read more

I found my center here. Coming here made me feel so relaxed, I felt like i was melting on the floor. Our instructor, Kushi, instructed us in hatha yoga and she was fantastic. As a beginner, I wasn't sure what to expect, but with her clear instructions on how to move our bodies and channel our energies, it was easy to follow along. I appreciated how she explained each move in her soothing voice, sometimes even going into the physiology behind each move. For one hour, it was easy to focus on nothing else but yoga. I think that sometimes it's easy to get caught up in our busy lives and think about the future, but this yoga class helped me focus on the present. I would recommend this class to anyone interested in yoga! read more

I'm so happy I found this place! I've only been able to take class with two instructors, and they are both fantastic. Their sequencing is smart, creative, and fluid, and I thought the classes were great for a variety of levels. I can't wait to be able to practice here more. Love Breathing Room! Beautiful space, filled with warm and welcoming people. Started going to Foundations classes a year ago, getting back into yoga after a 10-year hiatus. Since then I have been making it a bigger and more regular part of my life because coming to Breathing Room and coming to the mat has brought such joy to my life. Teachers such as Verred, Margot, and Stacey welcome you to class, make you laugh, inspire you, and do an incredible job of not only teaching you the poses and flow, but also helping you to approach your body and yoga practice with patience, forgiveness, an open mind. They help you find joy, peace, and balance through the practice of yoga, without getting preachy. And of course yoga is great for increasing your physical (as well as emotional) strength, balance, and flexibility! The only criticism I could offer is that the bathroom in the hallway is often out of towels/TP. But really this place is such a treasure! read more

The reception area and folks are very welcoming and the all the teachers (especially Stacey) are experienced and helpful. The entire place oozes calm and I have already increased my flexibility in a few weeks. Love this place, and can't live without it. I absolutely love Breathing Room - it is the most charming, inviting lovely yoga studio I've ever seen. Breathing Room offers an extremely wide range of yoga classes - from physically demanding vinyasa to relaxing candlelit yoga to meditative restorative yoga - and aerial yoga and acroyoga. Many of the yoga instructors I've had have been amazing and wonderful always make me feel great during and after class. They are ridiculously talented. The space itself is wonderful. At the entrance to Breathing Room is a beautiful lobby/merchandize room with gorgeous vaulted ceilings and preserved trees. Inside, there are three uniquely charming yoga studios - the "hearth" - with vaulted ceilings and fireplaces - the "forest" - with tree branches lining the walls and ceiling, with very well designed recessed lighting - and the "cloud", with arial yoga hammocks, padded floors and cute cloud-shaped lights. Connecting the rooms is a delightfully decorated 'living room' - also very relaxing. One word of caution is that, while the regularly scheduled staff is fantastic, some of their substitute instructors can be err, very hit-or-miss and I've had some pretty crappy experiences with non-regular substitutes (who in fairness I haven't seen on the BR lineup again) and Karmic Community instructors. I try to go to classes taught by their regular instructors - they just know what they're doing and how to pace a class and set the right tone. There is also a floatation center called PuREST off a hallway in Breathing Room. If you're into float therapy sensory deprivation, this is probably one of the best places because rather than using float tanks, they have full height float rooms. (these seem to run pretty warm though, so if you don't you might not find them especially 'sensory depriving') read more

Based on the glowing reviews, I brought my mom & sisters here for a post-Christmas class. They had never done yoga before, and my experience was limited to a few scattered classes at gyms, not dedicated yoga studios. Our Foundations class with Margot was so, so wonderful. Going in, we were definitely afraid we'd be falling over or suppressing giggles, but Margot was so funny and down-to-earth, took it slowly, and somehow made us feel completely comfortable and at home despite doing something that was really new to us. She corrected form in a really nice & professional way, and really demonstrated poses well. I've been doing downward dog pose in fitness classes for years, but I had no idea I wasn't quite distributing my weight correctly! The studio itself is gorgeous, with light pouring in through huge windows - really peaceful and lovely. It was pretty warm in the studio - I wished I'd worn more breathable clothing - but it wasn't hot, and I got used to it. I really can't say enough good things about Margot and the whole place - check it out! read more

I come here for Margot's 6.30pm Power Lotus Vinyasa (every Tues/Thurs) as often as I can, even when it's snowing out! I love her classes b/c it combines cardio, strength and spirituality - everything I look for in an amazing yoga class. She pushes you to another level, but won't press or humiliate you in any way. She is super positive and an extremely cool lady. Her style takes a little getting used to, as it can be a little fast paced. But once you got it, it's extremely addictive. I've been also to the Heated Vinyasa classes, which really isn't too warm (this is a good thing, as I despise hot yoga) at all. Class passes are very affordable, especially at student rates. For $115, you get 10 classes and $60 for 5 classes. This is unheard of, honestly, especially for the quality of the teachers and the sense of community in the studio.You can also drop in for $14 a class (these are all student rates I'm quoting), which is the best price in all of New Haven if not EVER. In all, I love the Breathing Room. As long as I am in New Haven, I'll always come back! read more

I've been doing the new student package ($30 for 3 weeks unlimited), which admittedly is a great bargain, but so far I've not been super impressed by the handful of classes I've taken (combination of restorative, form and flow, slow flow candlelit). Positives: 1) Classes so far have been varied and not repetitive 2) Love the online sign-up option Negatives: 1) The studio smells - I get it - it's a yoga studio, but invest in air fresheners, or just clean it that much more thoroughly. The blankets and bolsters also smell something fierce - again, invest in a washing machine for your practice, or send these off a few times a month 2) The classes are WAY overpacked - in every class I've been to I've invariably ended up touching someone else or vice-a-versa, or they've even rolled onto my mat, which is not fun 3) Form and Flow - this is misleading - at no point was proper form addressed, and furthermore the corrections as well as modifications were few and far between 4) This is by far my biggest complaint - in no class that I've been to so far has the instructor inquired whether there are any new students or injuries - this is not only irresponsible, but quite frankly dangerous. As someone who's still recovering from a bad back injury thanks to a poorly led class, I'm particularly sensitive on this point. I have no compunction about raising my hand and making myself known, but from experience there are other people who are a bit more shy and intimidated 5) Finally, again, in no class that I've been to have there been modifications given for varying levels - again, distressing, if you're not a super experienced or confident yogi, or even just not feeling it for the day. Since I'm leaving New Haven anyway, I'm not planning on extending past the 3 weeks, but even if I was planning on it, there's no way I would continue here - while admittedly I do feel physically fantastic after the classes due to the variety of poses, etc, I keep finding myself mentally and emotionally distressed because of the above issues, and instead of focusing on my practice, I find myself bothered by everything else. read more

What a nice place to practice yoga! I came to Breathing Room because of a Groupon special, but I might just have to keep coming. Margot, the owner, has done a great job with the space--there are very high ceilings, attractive light fixtures and decorations, and the floor has a bit of give to it--which is great for jump backs and chaturangas! I would highly recommend Breathing Room to new and old yogis alike. The space is small enough that you feel you can get personal attention while practicing, which is great if you feel you need an assist or readjustment. With that said, it is still definitely challenging, even for seasoned yogis--Margot's vinyasa flow class had me doing scissors pose, moon salutations, and some intense hip openers. I noticed a couple drawbacks, but they were nothing to keep me from returning. First, the studio is adjacent to a boutique, and is only separated by a curtain, so there can be a bit of background noise. There are also no mirrors in the studio, and while I found this to be refreshing, I know that some students rely on their reflection for alignment. Also, at present, there are not a huge number of classes to choose from, but hopefully there will be some additions in the future if the studio continues to grow. I was impressed to see Power Flow and Yin Yoga on the schedule--I only wish they were held more often! I hope more New Havenites discover this gem. It is a great place for newer yogis who might feel overwhelmed at a large studio, but as I said earlier, even veterans should give it a try! read more

My life has changed since I've started doing yoga at BR. With my hectic schedule I can't get there as often as I'd like, but with BR's schedule I'm always able to find at least one class per week that I could get to, which is definitely a huge plus. At BR I feel very comfortable and like the instructors pay attention to everyone individually. It's nice to feel that personal connection because I know that if I'm doing something the wrong way the instructor will correct me. I personally love Verred and Tobie's classes the most. I have attended other classes, which were definitely satisfying, but I feel a huge amount of comfort and happiness when I leave V & T's classes. Often times they will say a few words that go exactly with what I needed to hear that week! I will definitely continue to go to BR and hope I get more time to enjoy more of their amazing classes! read more

The last time I went to the Breathing Room it was on Chapel Street, it's in a better location now and the space is huge an beautiful! There are 3 yoga studies plus soaking tubs, and lounge areas. There isn't dedicated parking but they have reduced rates with the parking garages in the area ($2-3 with validation). I did the prenatal yoga class with Samantha and it was awesome. Very relaxing and enjoyable. I will definitely be back! read more

Very beautiful space. The decor alone is relaxing as soon as you walk in. Foundations with Pauli on Saturday mornings is awesome for beginners while also giving you the opportunity to challenge yourself. It's a great way to start the weekend! I cannot stop talking about Breathing Room. After having been going to the yoga classes at my standard box gym for over a year, I started to feel like I was missing something. I wanted a little more in my yoga practice. More assistance with my alignment and a freedom to ask questions. More of a community environment. More diversity in the types of classes I could take. More warmth and fluidity in the class structure. I have found all of that and so much more at Breathing Room. My friend (non-yogini) mentioned that she purchased a LivingSocial deal to Breathing Room. I did a little research, looked at the class schedule, realized it was less than two blocks from where I work, and bada-bing, bada-boom, I found myself with a one month unlimited visit membership at a massive discount off LivingSocial. I've been hooked ever since. I can schedule my classes online, or just drop in for a class when I have the time. The studio itself is very safe, with a required access code to gain entry. There are multiple changing rooms, a shower, two studio rooms, unlimited tea and animal crackers, and some great volunteers that run the front desk. The classes range from zen restorative to general foundations, yin, hatha, and vinyasa flow classes to intense intermediate/advanced heated vinyasa. It's a truly supportive and welcoming community that I always look forward to visiting. If you've never taken a yoga class before, or if you're a well seasoned yogi looking for a new studio, I cannot recommend this place enough. Breathing Room is hands-down the best yoga studio in New Haven! I especially adore Margot, the owner, who teaches vigorous, interesting classes with great soundtracks. She's a totally inspired teacher and will provide you with fantastic adjustments and really encourage you to reach your personal next level. My only caveats are that the studio tends to be really cold in the wintertime (I've practiced yoga for a while, in studios that typically have gently heated rooms--usually to 85-90F) which can make it difficult to practice; additionally, classes I have taken with other instructors have not been as challenging or fun as Margot's. Additionally, I wish there were more morning classes (there's a 7am Wednesday one)! But Margot's wonderful instruction (I especially recommend the T/Th 6:30-8pm power classes) more than makes up for all of this. Also, keep your eyes peeled for the "yoga open houses" that Breathing Room will do from time to time (a free day of class for you to check out the studio, and usually some kind of a great deal on a class package if you buy that same day). Keep in mind that when paying for classes, you'll have to do so by cash or check only. read more

I've been going back and forth about trying yoga for a few months, and a voucher for The Breathing Room just happened to pop up on Living Social along with a 20% off coupon code, so I figured why the hell not give it a try? I didn't really know what to expect, and I honestly didn't realize how much I liked TBR until I tried out another yoga studio (that I also got a voucher for on Living Social. I swear, that website will be the death of me). The atmosphere is amazing. When you walk in there's a small waiting room which is quite possibly one of the most relaxing places I've ever walked into. It's dark, warm, cozy, and inviting. There's cushiony seating, some snacks, and a few things (yoga mats, towels, clothing, etc) for sale, but you don't feel like you're in a store and you don't feel like they're trying to sell you things. There's a changing room with cubbies, and a shower. The first class I took there was a meditation class in an absolutely stunning room. You couldn't walk into that room and not feel at ease. I was kind of weary about the actual yoga classes, because I've taken them here and there at gyms and whatnot before and absolutely hated them. My experience at TBR was the complete opposite, I loved every class I took and all of the instructors. Everyone was extremely helpful and there was no pretentiousness whatsoever. There are a ton of different types of classes, and I like that they're really involved in the community. They always have different events and workshops going on, which I think is awesome. I recently bought another deal on Groupon for TBR, I can't wait to start back up! read more

Breathing Room...for a long time, many of my younger friends who live in New Haven went to this studio but I could never figure out how to find it. Now the Breathing Room has moved and grown. It has a great new space on the second floor on Chapel Street between Church and State and it is a cinch to find them, and parking is always easy to find (and costs $1.) Knowing of these recent changes, I got a special for a month of yoga through LivingSocial. And wow. I am so glad I did. I was going almost every day to Fresh Yoga up until now -- for three years. There, the classes are good, though all pretty much the same because they promote Ana Forrest yoga. As for schedule, they are largely in the 9:30-11am window. How different Breathing Room is from that studio. Fresh is impersonal. Breathing Room wants to give you a big hug. It was an amazing experience to walk in the first time and be greeted by the owner, Margot. I've never even seen the owner of Fresh. Margot sat down with me and chatted warmly before the class she taught. This place, unlike Fresh, where no one really interacts with you or each other, is clearly a place of community, with special "sadhanas" (like a challenge to do a daily practice that people can keep track of on a white board on the waiting room's wall,) pot luck dinners and lots of special events. (One example of the many special activities: the last week in August there is a recommitment to Ashtanga practice that is running five days straight at 6:30am, where the classes are only $10 each.) But let's get to the yoga classes themselves. They are really innovative. They have candlelight yoga. Yin and Yang yoga. Lotus Flow yoga (Margot's class.) There are classes for every type of yogini, and each teacher has his or her own groovy style that is inspiring and spiritual. You can go vigorous if that's what you want. Or restorative. And everything in between. Their schedule is also really friendly to working people, with a lot of early morning, lunch and evening classes. I love that, no matter what time of day I think I might be able to fit something in, I look on the schedule and there is something happening down at Breathing Room! The physical space is really attractive, and that itself also communicates that this yoga studio is striving to be a community, a "home." Unlike many yoga studios, Breathing Room has a big waiting room outside the main studio, where you check in. It looks like it was decorated by a Macy's window decorator, with natural wood, plenty of seating and pillows everywhere. There are also changing rooms, cubbies for shoes, a shower, and a small retail business selling a few tops, mats and towels for those mats (a sure sign that you can get sweaty there!) There are two studios so they can have concurrent classes. They are both decorated in a beautiful, surprising way. They retained the inherent beauty of the building that houses them, which has old tin ceilings and huge windows. And they do now take credit cards. At last, I've found the kind of yoga home I have missed since moving here. read more

Dear Breathing Room - I'm sorry that I stayed away for so long. There was a 10-class pass at a nearby studio that had to be finished before I could pony up for your offerings, and I thank you for waiting. After cajoling a friend into joining me for Tuesday's Power Yoga class, I shan't stay away again! What a lovely class! I'm happy to find a place that manages to mix silly dancing in with serious yoga and not feel forced. Bonus: rockin' music, with a wide genre range. Breathing Room is absolutely the best yoga studio I have ever practiced in. The space is in this gorgeous old building, but very updated and clean. The staff and instructors are knowledgable and kind. And the fellow yogis make up an awesome community! I couldn't recommend it more, for anyone from beginners to experts! read more

Very convenient schedule, very friendly young teachers. I love the saturday morning class with Tobi, the power yoga on tuesday and happy power on Friday. Convenient location and very cute studio. The prices are decent so that everybody can afford it for once! I just regret the music. I would rather have relaxing instrumental music without any lyrics... Except that, I really recommend this new studio that is very warm and full of special events. Can't wait the dance-yoga class mid March! read more

Breathing Room Yoga is a wonderful space and the teachers are experienced and fun. It's a yogic environment - loving, supportive, non-competitive and educational. Not only is it a beautiful studio, but I love that they are always offering fun workshops. My two favorties have been acro yoga and the inversion workshop. Even though I don't go to the studio on a regular bases for their normal schedule, I always feel welcome when I come in for their workshops !! read more
