Many doctors nowadays had horrible bedside manners and always give you the impression of "in and out" visits. However, Dr. Smith, not once, was he annoyed with me with my countless questions and really made me feel at ease. My wife has been experiencing significant lower back pain for approximately six months. She was recently diagnosed with arthritis, although the specific type and underlying cause of her symptoms have not yet been determined. She has completed physical therapy, which provided no relief, but was required by insurance before additional imaging could be authorized. To date, an MRI has been completed, resulting in the general arthritis diagnosis. She recently had an online consultation with a rheumatologist through a referral from her primary care physician. She had also been referred to Mary Rutan Hospital for a pain management consultation, which she decided to keep so she could establish a relationship with a pain specialist and maintain additional treatment options. Upon arriving at the hospital, we asked the main entrance receptionist where pain management was located. We were told it was "down past the emergency room" and directed with a thumb gesture. We followed the signs toward the emergency room but could not find anything identifying pain management or outpatient services. We eventually asked a cleaning staff member for assistance, and she contacted a passing nurse. We were then informed that pain management was located in outpatient services, which we had already passed. Both employees were courteous and helpful, and we appreciated their assistance. My wife was checked in and taken back to Room 3 in outpatient services within approximately five minutes. Unfortunately, the condition of the room was extremely concerning. The floor was visibly dirty, with hair, stains, and trash present. The vents were also dirty, the sink appeared outdated and not up to code, cabinets and drawers had no locks, and the door showed significant rust. Additionally, the exit sign was blinking. The admitting nurse was thorough when reviewing my wife's medical history. However, she initially used a blood pressure cuff that was clearly too small. A larger cuff was readily visible in its packaging in the basket beneath the machine. My wife explained that the cuff was extremely tight, and the resulting blood pressure reading was unusually high. Despite this, the nurse did not replace the cuff on the second attempt and instead attributed the elevated reading to my wife being in pain and nervous. The appointment was scheduled for 11:00 a.m., but we waited approximately 25 minutes before Dr. Anuj M. Shah and his PA entered the room. Dr. Shah did not ask my wife whether she was comfortable with the PA participating in the appointment. The PA remained in the room with a full-size laptop throughout the consultation. Dr. Shah initially stated that he wanted to review my wife's MRI before developing a treatment plan. My wife agreed and explained that she had recently consulted with a rheumatologist and wanted to keep this appointment to establish a relationship with a pain specialist and maintain additional treatment options. At that point, Dr. Shah's demeanor changed considerably. His communication became confrontational and dismissive. While leaning against the sink with his arms and legs crossed, he spoke to my wife in a manner we perceived as condescending. He proceeded to tell her what he believed she was experiencing and where she was experiencing pain, then demanded that she stand and identify the locations of her pain. He rapidly questioned her about other areas of discomfort without allowing her adequate time to respond. When my wife discussed arthritis as a possible cause, Dr. Shah dismissed the concern, stating that "everyone has it, even my PA." The PA appeared to smirk at the comment. The interaction continued to escalate until Dr. Shah demanded, "WHERE ELSE!?" At that point, my wife and I stood up and explained that the interaction was not helping. We decided to leave. Dr. Shah attempted to stop her by saying, "Ma'am," but I stated that we were finished and we were leaving. We found Dr. Shah's behavior to be extremely rude, unprofessional, demeaning, and, in our opinion, bordering on abusive. Most importantly, my wife was seeking help for significant and ongoing pain--not medication or drugs. She was attempting to better understand the source of her symptoms and identify appropriate treatment options. We left the appointment feeling that my wife's concerns were dismissed rather than evaluated. Regardless of a physician's opinion regarding the cause of a patient's symptoms, patients deserve to be treated with professionalism, dignity, patience, and respect. Our experience fell far short of those expectations, and we believe the hospital should seriously review both the condition of the outpatient facility and the conduct displayed during this appointment.

I have a thirty-three degree scoliosis curve that was just discovered two summers ago when I went…read morein to have x-rays taken for my sprained shoulder. I was super freaked to find out about my twisted spine, even more so when I started researching the surgery that corrects it. Let's just say it involves a pneumothorax, rib removal, metal rods/bolts, a few months of strict bed rest, and at least six months recovery to normal activities like brushing your hair and bathing yourself. Ugh. From the ER where I found out about my spine, I went to my family doctor, then a pain specialist (though I was in no pain), then to get more X-rays, then to a neurosurgeon in Marion who made me do a circus dance and measured me from just about every angle. The neurosurgeon said I was okay and that I just needed to be monitored via X-ray every five years or so. I was relieved and happy to hear that I didn't need the surgery. I avoided getting a second opinion because I was too afraid of someone telling me that the Marion surgeon was mistaken and that I needed surgery pronto. But, I recently mustered the nerve to visit Dr. Jason Dapore for a second opinion (and just to get a doctor closer to where I'm living now). Dr. Dapore is everything I hoped he would be. He is prime age for a doc - not too old and set in his ways, he is young enough to know about new technology and procedures. But he isn't too young so as to be inexperienced. He made me do the circus dance again and looked closely at my X-Rays. He let me ask him a zillion questions. He was very patient with me. He reassured me that I do not need the surgery now, and probably won't ever need it if I keep my back strong and flexible. He set me up with a physical therapy team in the same building where I'm learning a lot about and already feeling better about being proactive with my scoliosis. The rest of Dr. Dapore's staff is also excellent, and the building is top-notch. The waiting room is large with many options on where to sit and a skylight at the apex of the room. There's also a good variety of reading material from Highlights to Entertainment Weekly to the Dispatch. The ladies at the front desk even make an effort to memorize your name and pronounce it correctly. Plus, the two bathrooms in the front (bathrooms are my niche) are big and always clean. I would give Dr. Dapore 6 stars and a hug if I could, but alas, five will do.

I called to make an appointment and was seen within a week or so. As you entered the office, you sanitize your hands and then make your way to the desk. Every one was wearing a mask and then temperatures were taken. If you have been to any medical office lately it's the standard treatment! The check in didn't take long and we were taken back to a room in about 15 minutes or so. We were pleasantly greeted by the staff and had a short interview with his nurse. Dr. Hannallah came in the room shortly after that. He had reviewed previous X-rays and spent a very reasonable amount of time with us. He was very straight forward with his thoughts and diagnosis. I have arthritis and it's continuing to get worse. He recommended strongly that I should never have surgery on my back! He also said that he wouldn't operate on my back!. My pain is degenerative and there is some disc degeneration, in the lumbar region. He asked to have an MRI done and then to return for results. I appreciated Dr. Hannallah and his honesty. I have known doctors that kind of lead you on and won't be straight forward with you. I am thankful that I was assigned to him and appreciated the answers I was given. Next up- MRI!

I'm…read morevery specific when I give my insurances on how they were billed etc. On July 14, 2023 and again on July 24,2023 I stopped into their billing office and told them if they billed correctly I should not receive a bill because Tricare for Life is a wrap around for Medicare and whatever Medicare doesn't cover Tricare for Life covers 100%. When Tricare for Life is billed either correctly or incorrectly I get notified staying they covered xyz amount or they state due to x probably they didn't pay and I'm not responsible for the bill because of their error. ortho one states I owe $283.61 and never billed Tricare for Life and since we're now rolling into 3 years after the fact----Tricare for Life will probably tell them to go kick rocks. I have NEVER received any correspondence about this from Tricare for Life which means they didn't bill. What's sad is these places are notorious for partial billing and sticking the patient with what's left over-----why accept $75 from Tricare when I can bill the patient for a higher amount of $284.61 I've explained it to them repeatedly and yet they still have not billed Tricare for life and yes they accept Tricare for life.
