In my time, after the Orient Bros. closed - Brenner's Children's Shop was the place to go for first communion and boy scout/girl scout clothing. I am saddened to read that it was closing. My mother used to shop here for children's clothing for my brother and before that me. I am very sorry that a landmark store is clothing after so many years. I wish the owners a happy retirement in their extra golden years! I went here to buy my sons Boy Scout uniform. I was very pleased with my experience. The lady behind the counter came out and walked me through everything. She sized my son correctly and got all the patches for his shirt. They offer a sewing service as well. Last but not least they were quick with the sewing service. I stop in to Brenner's periodically to update my son's school uniform. The owners are always extremely helpful and it's obvious that they take pride in their establishment. They've been providing the community with school/scouting uniforms for a long time (I remember visiting there with my mom when I was little) and they know the requirements inside and out. They always offer to order something if they don't have what you need in stock. Recently, I went in looking for a christening outfit for my godson. They had an incredible selection (for both boys and girls) and it ended up being hard to choose between a few of the suits. The owner also took the time to help me with accessories I would need as well. In an age when a lot of us turn to big chain stores for most things we need, it is so nice to have this small, family-run shop to check out that provides excellent personalized service. A convenient place to pick up scouting uniforms if you live in the area, but if you value being treated with respect by store owners, you should look elsewhere. I recently purchased a Cub Scout shirt, a hat, and some patches, along with a Brownie sash and patches. That weekend, when I was getting out the items for my children to try on, I couldn't find the Cub Scout patches. The following Tuesday I called to address the situation. (My assumption at the time was that this had been an innocent oversight, as the store was quite busy that day, and that there should be no problem getting it fixed. So I was not picking a fight, and my tone was not confrontational in the least.) When I told the woman on the phone that I couldn't find the Cub Scout patches in the bag, she bluntly said, "That's because you weren't paying attention." (If this was intended as good-natured ribbing, it was not evident in her voice.) She then proceeded to tell me that the patches were in the pocket of the shirt and that she was sure I had been told this. I checked, and the patches were indeed in the pocket. I wish I had known that before I washed the shirt, but the patches did not appear damaged, so no big deal. This should have been the end of the matter. But I was taken aback by the unfriendly presumption of the person on the phone. She went on to say that in her 32 years as owner of the store, she ALWAYS told her customers that the patches were in the pocket. This response puzzled me, since her voice did not sound like the helpful, amiable woman who had helped me when I was in the store. I asked her whether she had been in the store every day last week, and she admitted that she had not been in on Thursday (which is the day I was in). Yet she remained adamant that I had been told where to find the patches. I acknowledge it is entirely possible that I was told but was too distracted to process that information. But it is also equally possible that the saleswoman neglected to mention it. After all, there were other customers in the store, and she was getting phone calls from customers on top of that. And if she did in fact forget to tell me, I wouldn't hold it against her. What I object to is the owner's condescension and refusal to concede the possibility that I might not have been at fault for not knowing where the patches were - despite the fact that she wasn't even in the store when I purchased them. I told her I thought she was being flippant. Rather than apologize, she denied the charge. (You can judge for yourself whether I made a fair assessment of her comments.) You would think that after 32 years in business she would have mastered the art of good customer service, but I guess not. I had to go back to the store anyway because the hat I had purchased for my son was too big. I had planned to exchange it for a smaller size, but after that phone conversation, I did not want my money going to such an unpleasant person. So I decided to return the hat instead, along with the Brownie items, which can be purchased online. I would have returned the shirt as well, if I had not washed it already. When I came in the store, I told the owner that I was returning the hat because it was too large and that I was returning the other items because I found her comments on the phone to be off-putting. She insisted that she never, ever insulted her customers. Yet within a minute or two of making that claim, after it became clear that I was resolute in my decision to return the items, she told me I was "not too bright" for preferring to pay postage rather than patronize her business. (I suppose that's her idea of constructive criticism?) I'm curious how the owner assesses her own intelligence for losing business as a result of her unjustifiably self-righteous need to cast blame and her failure to apologize even once for her presumptuous comments. I understand the store isn't losing tons of profit from the return of my meager purchase, but I will wager that it cost her more than the $6.50 the Girl Scout website charges in postage for the Brownie items I returned. When I noted that I could avoid the cost of postage by going to the Girl Scout store in Waltham, she suggested that if I thought she was unfriendly, they were REALLY unfriendly there. Since I have never shopped at that store, I am not qualified to assess this claim. But I know it was bad form for her to say it, and a pathetic attempt to make me regret my decision. To the contrary, my visit to the store only confirmed my decision not to support this business. If the store owner happens to read this, here is my unsolicited advice to her. If anyone calls in the future to say they can't find their patches, just say this: "Have you checked the pockets of the shirt? Because that's where we put the patches." You could even throw this in for good measure: "I'm sorry if we neglected to tell you this." It's really not that hard to practice common courtesy. read more

If you're looking for a baby or toddler outfit for a gift or holiday or pictures definitely try this place out. Particularly for little dresses. I'm a fan of traditional and old fashioned baby clothes and I've never failed to find something beautiful here at a reasonable price. If you like things like smocking, sailor dresses and sweet little hats and bonnets you'll find them here. Lots imported from England.
