I was VERY specific that I didn't want hair to be above my shoulder and that I wanted it resting on my shoulders with some give, but no!! I've been coming here for over a year (Claris is my stylist) and I have never found anyone who I can just totally trust and not second guess how much she's cutting or how she will end up styling. I even brought my 3 picky daughters, and they fell in love with her. The ease of texting for an appt is a PLUS! The hairdressers here are pretty awesome and competent. I've tried different hairdressers here when my regular hairdresser, Ann, was out of town. Everyone here is also friendly and courteous. Their new location on 4th Street is definitely worth checking out - seems like it was made for Hollywood !!! This is really a ZERO star review. This is not a review for the salon in general but for one of their stylist, David. I read David's bio on the salon website and thought it was a good fit. A stylist with a lot of experience. I talked to David on the phone to make an appointment and still had a good feeling. My first appointment was to get a cut. I have longer than should long hair which is curly. I wanted some soft layers. I ended up with choppy, chunky layers. I looked like I had randomly cut my own hair. I still did make an appointment to get some highlights, thinking that David maybe just has to get familiar with my curly hair. I went back and asked him to soften up my layers but it just didn't turn out right. I was very frustrated. Now comes the terrifying part: I showed David pictures of soft, ombré style blonde highlights. Several examples. I ended up with yellow to orange hair, chunky, horrible chucks for weirdly bleached strands, the "highlights" on each side were extremely uneven and looked like some 5 year old tried color blocking on my hair. I wanted to just cry! My hair was ruined. This was the most terrifying experience I ever had! I didn't want to get David's feeling (hoe stupid!), said thanks, paid and walked out the salon. I immediately called my hairdresser from the past. She is an vor drive away (which is why I wanted to find a hairstylist closer after my move...what a mistake!!!). Fortunately she could see me 2 days later and fixed the disaster!- in the meanwhile I was able to step outside and go to work only because I had my hair up in a bun and was wearing a head band to cover the terrible color. So...long story short...do NOT book an appointment with David. Just don't! read more

I love this place. As a guy who had dreads almost all his life, it was quite the experience to go to get a real haircut. Stacie treated me with kindly and catered to my lack of knowledge of hair styles and procedures. She has always been extremely friendly offering tea/water/coffee and has spent a lot of time making me more comfortable with my new hair. Poor Covid safety protocols. I didn't feel safe getting highlights and a cut. The salon filled up during the course of my appointment, so that nearly every chair was occupied and there were some additional employees handling the desk, and cleanup-- probably 20-30 people in the space. There was NO ventilation in the entire place-- all doors and windows seemed to be closed, and I didn't feel or hear any air movement from the HVAC system. I was told to wait in my chair for 30 minutes while the hair color set. I looked around and decided to go outside for that period of time, as I was getting increasingly uncomfortable with the crowd in there. The salon was basically operating in a completely normal fashion and capacity as far as I could tell, with the exception that everyone was wearing masks, and there was the perfunctory temp check and questionnaire at the entry. Honestly, it's the worst experience I've had (by far) in the entire pandemic, in terms of lax safety, and feeling stuck in the middle of an appointment where it was a bit difficult to get up and leave immediately. As it was, I cut the appointment short. I have no problem with the stylist (who I followed there from a previous salon). But the salon cannot be following the Covid guidelines... I kept thinking of all the people in my life that could get hurt if I were to get Covid and pass it on, never mind myself. I felt so angry-- I feel like this salon is operating irresponsibly. I hate to leave them a negative review, because I know that Covid is hard on everyone, but I felt like I needed to say something. A few things would have made me feel better -- spacing clients out in every other chair (not every chair); opening front and back doors and getting a few air purifiers in there for ventilation (in addition to whatever the HVAC might or might not be doing) and finally, suggesting that clients who had to wait for hair to process could do that outside. It's NOT hard to do these things, and so many other businesses are doing so much better. read more

I've been a long time client of Monica. She's great at color, specifically highlights. I have long hair and it grows like a weed so i like to change it up frequently. She's good without much direction and finds a color, style that suits you best. You can also tell her exactly what you want and she'll deliver. I've asked her to make drastic changes to my hair as well and thankfully they've all gone over smoothly and i've looked good afterwards. Everyone is really friendly, i've been coming here for years. This place is great!! To state it simply, every time i have ever allowed someone other than Jeff to touch my hair I immediately regret it. I keep going back to him after all these years (10? 12? I've lost count) because he does a consistently fantastic job cutting/styling and coloring my hair (and I have a TON of hair to deal with). Jeff knows how to complement my face shape and skin tone and has no problem telling me if one of my ideas just isn't going to work. He's easy to talk to and the appointment is always fun. My Mom and sister are also longtime clients and all three of us agree that there is no one better. Jeff was the obvious choice when selecting someone to do our hair for my sisters upcoming wedding because we trust his skills and (almost more importantly) his taste level. I am 100% confident that it will be perfect. The salon is very nice, clean, and active. There's always music playing in the background, different art hanging on the walls, and a variety of current magazines. The staff is super friendly and helpful - they offer you a drink when you arrive and have helped me pick products when my stylist was on vacation. I just recently started Yelping and was cruising my known restaurants and services. Like tracy c. I was startled by the rant of one. The Salon is clean and bright with rotating work of Artists that are tasteful and interesting to the eye. A cup of tea or coffee is always at the ready if you are inclined with interesting music from Karen's Ipod often playing in the background. In particular, Karen has been my hairstylist for at least 8 years. She has always been professional. I've found all my appointments with her to be delightful with her attention to detail incredibly reliable and as a result myself content to go into public with great hair. She starts each appointment the same which is, what do we want to do today?, and talking through any changes - I'm not to wild with the hair being myself between Fabio and Bruce Willis in hair volume - but it is nice to be asked anyways and over the years there has been some change!! As an Aussie she manages the time with big hearted warmth and humor. I've always enjoyed the shampoo and rinse which includes a nice neck massage too if time allows. At times when my teens have had life changing and complex hair needs they have gone to Karen with extremely positive results - and you all can guess how picky teens can be on their public presentation. I HIGHLY recommend Karen if you care about your hair and always recommend her when the occasion arises. I would also add that the other stylists in the Salon appear to be on their game professionally too. After moving to San Rafael, I was looking for a stylist who could keep my bright red color at its vibrant best and also do a stylish cut for medium-length hair. There were great reviews on yelp for Brewer Phillips salon, so one day I walked in and had the ultimate good fortune that Jen Tieche was available to work with me. My red is not your run-of-the-mill auburn; it is a show-stopping red that many stylists seem unwilling/unable to attempt. Jen took the time to look at a photo I brought in of my glorious red at its finest, then carefully looked through my hair and patiently chatted with me about what I was hoping for in order to be sure that we were definitely on the same page. Unlike many other stylists I have encountered in the past, she didn't try to talk me out of my crazy bright red; she trusted ME to know what I like for myself, a very refreshing change. Know what? My hair color came out perfectly that first time. I hadn't made it 2 blocks from the salon before three people on the street had stopped me to compliment me on it. Best of all, I've been going to Jen for a year and a half now, and she has produced consistent coloring results each time, which can be difficult for a colorist to do, particularly with my unique shade of red. On top of all that, Jen is just a true delight to work with. From the moment I enter the salon, I feel totally taken care of. She is quick to set me up with a glass of yummy iced tea (they have wine too!) and then she checks in with me (each and every time) to see if I want anything updated. I trust her completely with making my hair look its best, and that is no small thing for me, since I have experienced some serious hair mishaps at other salons in the past. Jen is also the kind of person who remembers personal details about my life and seems to genuinely care about how I am doing. Our appointments end up feeling more like a hangout with a special girlfriend than a service transaction. So...if you want luscious red locks, go to Jen. If you get your hair cut here, pay attention to the names on the 5-Star reviews. If they say someone else is available, say you'll pass. Or get used to wearing a beanie until you grow out. read more

I'm so very unhappy with my haircut I got yesterday. The hairdresser was Jeff Barr . I had lots of photos of how I wanted my hair cut! I showed him very carefully. First thing he does after I've let it grow all the way past my shoulders was cut it up to my chin. I almost had a heart attack. I can't believe it. I let it grow for year. He said he was done I looked and said it's not even. One side was 11/2" longer than the other. I wanted shorter in back and long in front a wedge cut, he had to cut it 3 times and now I have a bob and when I take the hot iron to curl it under there's so many layers that don't go into the curling iron I'm just very very unhappy and I will never go back to him again. read more

Would like to have been a customer but apparently they didn't want me. Visiting my daughter, I decided to get a color touch up, I stopped in on a Thursday explained I was in town through Wednesday and were there any openings? The receptionist looked at me and said "Name?" I gave her my name and then she said "Number?" She wrote them on a post it. I just stood there for a moment and finally asked? "Are there any openings? " She said, "I don't know, I'll have to call around." I stood there longer while she just stared at me, finally she said, "we'll call you." When I left I said to my husband, "I don't think they plan on ever calling me one way or the other." And they never did. Not even a curtesy call. Customer Service is sorely lacking. First off I think that Monique H. person is crazy. Brewer Phillips is amazing. I personally have only had Jorge cut my hair and I think he is amazingly talented and really listens to what you want and has such a great personality. I've seen the other stylists work and I think it's just as good. If she had an "instinct" she should have listened to it, you can make your own decisions. On top of that I'm sure she was rude on the phone. If someone complains but can be mature about it I might listen to them be sincerely sorry and actually care about their concerns. If they're rude I'd shrug it off too. The stylists are very friendly, they use great products, The salon is beautiful and I don't mind the location. Best haircut ever! Thank you Claris!! My hair can be hard to get right, wavy and a bit frizzy, but not thick rather lots of thin hair that will freak out if you texturize it the wrong way. She has a way with hair and totally knew exactly how to cut it. I'm loving it! Highly recommend Claris. I haven't been here for over a year now,but the last time I was at "Brewer Philips", I left the most disappointed I had ever left a hair salon. Prior to that, I was a regular client and loved going.Reasonable prices for the area, but "pricey" compared to what I pay now that I live in the city. The last time I went was out of pure desperation - a no no! My usual stylist was away on vacation for 2 weeks, and I was desperate to get my hair done for a last minute audition. So, I booked in to get it done by another lady whom I was familiar with from talking with her the other times I had gone there.Not only that,she was Australian,so it was nice to chat about home and the things we missed! Anyway, I wanted something simple,it wasn't like I went in there to get a major makeover. All I wanted was my regrowth retouched and some foils.Instead, she suggested tinting my entire head - using a base coat on top.I was extremely hesitant but she insisted saying that it would be better - "okay",I thought, "she knows what she's doing".. Hell! Was I wrong!! Soooo wrong! I should have gone with my gut instinct which was screaming at me "NO! Don't do it Monique!" My hair turned out yellow.Not a bright yellow,but an off yellow - the yellow that makes you look like you're sick.If my skin was yellow people would've thought I either had a major overload of Beta- carotene or that I was suffering from major liver problems. I was so annoyed and when I told this stylist, she told me it looked "great". ("sure bi#$%,I know I look crap and you did this to me - you jealous cow") So,I left horrified. I wore a cap for weeks afterwards and debated on whether to go back the next week to get it corrected when my stylist got back,or to leave it. I left it because I was afraid my hair was so brittle, I didn't want it snapping off and making it look like I had lost my crowning glory in a terrible accident. I did call them to tell them how crap my hair looked and how disappointed I was.I took photos because I had visions of myself appearing on "Judge Judy" trying to get not only my money back,but also some of my dignity. Then I realized the trip to see Judge Judy would cost me more than what I would get if I won in court,so that soon went out the door! Needless to say, I never went back and left extremely disappointed. I was also annoyed my old stylist and the manager didn't really seem to care too much that I looked like crap for weeks after and it took me months to get my hair back to normal - thanks my fellow Aussie hair dresser..I hope you get bitten by a kangaroo.
