Not sure why Doctor Apatoff has such bad reviews on Yelp but he's a highly reputable neurologist at NYP. I booked a follow up appointment via Zocdoc because I wasn't feeling well. My appointment was booked for a week out but I reached out to his office to see if he had an earlier appointment. His office offered a telehealth appointment for the following day albeit late in the evening. I gladly accepted and Dr Apatoff contacted me around 7pm after he saw all his patients. He has great bedside manners (in person) and he's very attentive. He cares deeply about his patients. read more

First, he answered two different phones during my initial appointment (his mobile and the landline in his office) and carried on conversations with two other patients. After that appointment, he called and actually yelled at me because he wasn't happy that I made an "executive decision to leave the island of Manhattan" (his words) to get a scan done that he had ordered. At the follow-up appointment, he could not locate any records from my first visit and had to take a history all over again. He then told me that he thought my symptoms were due to a life-threatening infection. He ordered a test for it and never called me with the results. I had to find another doctor to order repeat testing because he simply would not return my calls and I didn't know which lab Dr. Apatoff had sent the test to. I'm sure he's a knowledgeable physician, but it is clear that he irresponsibly overextends himself to the point where he cannot provide decent care to his patients. Going to him is at best pointless and at worst a dangerous waste of time. read more

I have started seeing Dr. Apatoff before my MS diagnosis, in 2009. He is an empathetic, caring, kind and understanding neurologist. I was pretty bad when I was diagnosed. He took the time to understand my condition and gave me time to choose my treatment. My whole family trusts him. My son was hospitalized with a critical condition and Dr. Apatoff took the time to come and see him in the hospital. The one and only Dr. Apatoff is the BEST! read more

I had a bad experience with this doctor. First of all, I had to wait a long time for my appointment. I wish I didn't show up early for the paper work. The office is a total mess. Made me uncomfortable, and I'm not neat freak at all. It's run down and there's boxes and stuff everywhere. Very disorganized. Even so much that they don't have a credit card reader. The receptionist scanned a copy of my credit card to run at his wife's office (completely separate practice) who is also a dr (thought this was incredibly sketchy. Wish I was told this before to bring cash or a check). I will say that the receptionists were very friendly. Dr. Apatoff was very rude to me and condescending. He was fat shaming me multiple times, so if you have any issues behind weight, beware (he triggered a lot of things for me as I've been losing weight. He didn't care that I was, he just couldn't get past it. I'm not even way over obese by the standard range, he is the first doctor I've had to ever blame everything on it and be so mean about it). He made comments several times (not necessary at all) about how I had to use a "large" size in the arm pressure sleeve. Okay? Thanks for letting me know? I'm overweight. I understand it could be a factor to my issue. But he couldn't get past it. He made rude, hurtful comments the entire visit, laughing at me for gaining weight during the pandemic. He also questioned me and didn't believe what past dr's have told me (literally made me pull up results on my phone that were not relevant to my issue). He demanded he would take blood. I was so weirded out by his gross office that I almost told him no, for fear I'd get some infection from him sticking a needle in me, but I thought it would be good to get blood results to hand to another doctor (as I knew after speaking to him for 30 seconds that I'd be getting care elsewhere). He never called me with my test results. Ever to this day. And it's been MONTHS. I actually called the lab myself to get them. Some things came up on the result, and I was surprised he never even called me to discuss. Like seriously? He prescribed me some pretty intense medicines for something he suspected (no proof it wasn't something else). I didn't even pick up the prescriptions because I was worried after reading side effects (plus didn't believe anything this doctor was saying). Wish I read more reviews before coming. But hopefully this will help someone in the future. Be cautious. I went home and cried after because of how he talked to me. Don't recommend unless you're okay to deal with someone like that. read more

Completely disorganized office. Though Dr. Apatoff was kind and attentive, I would never return to him. I have been calling and contacting this office for two months to obtain medical records and can not receive so much as a phone call back. I have been told time and time again that Stephanie is the only person in the office who can access medical records and that she works only on Fridays. However, when I call on Friday she is frustratingly not there. The office has no record of my requests and I am beginning to believe they have lost my records. Physicians and hospitals are required by state law to maintain patient records for at least six years from the date of the patient's last visit. My visit was in mid to late December of 2018. It has not even been a year and this delay in releasing my records is unexplainable and inexcusable. If I could give zero stars I would. read more

I started seeing Dr. Apatoff in 2012. He was quoted in a MS publication (National MS Society) as one of the leading MS Specialists. I travel from Long Island to see him at least twice a year. He is a extraordinary neurologist and has always shown me compassion and patience. I trust his expertise immensely. I have been to other neurologists that were not so good. They intimidated me and made me feel like I was doing something wrong - just because I had questions. I compile a long list of concerns to bring to my appointment and he answers everything thoroughly. Unfortunately, there is no cure for MS at this time. It is a difficult disease to diagnose and treat, because every case is unique. It's unfair to judge Dr. A's ability as a neurologist based on your frustrations with this disease of MS. read more

I was referred to Dr. Apatoff for intense seizure symptoms; the PCP that referred me to him was deeply concerned and had me go the same day. His minimal tests yielded absolutely nothing, despite the fact that my symptoms were exponentially worse than they had been in over 10 years. He prescribed me a low-dose medication to help everything and which would hopefully not exacerbate the seizures. Several months later, he refused to refill the prescription, insisting I come back into the office for a follow-up exam. I told him I didn't quite understand what new information a medical examination would yield (especially since his first tests had shown nothing), could not afford to take the time off of work to sit in his office for hours like I had the first time, or afford a co-pay just for a refill. He actually told me that the time and money I would need to spend were "not really relevant" in the grand scheme of things. Sorry Dr. Apatoff, I have bills and student loans, and do NOT have a neurologist's salary, so they ARE relevant to me. He also implied without taking the time to really speak to me about the situation that I was trying to take advantage in order to obtain a controlled substance. Certainly NOT the case, I just would like to get through my day. I called the office back afterward to get clarification on what I had been told, and the receptionist was not at all surprised that Dr. Apatoff had spoken to me in the way that he did. The only thing I find relevant now is this doctor's wildly insensitive manner and utter disregard for his patients (which I will luckily never have to be again... I called 3 other neurologists immediately afterward, ALL of whom commented on Dr. Apatoff's widespread negative reputation among colleagues and patients alike). UNREAL. read more

My wife began seeing Dr. Apatoff soon after her diagnosis in 1998 because he came highly recommended. Big mistake. Very insensitive, does not return your calls, is always in a rush. My wife was hospitalized with an MS exacerbation. We spent almost thirty hours in the emergency room and no one from Dr. Apatoff's office came down to see her. I called his office (he was right upstairs) and begged that someone just come down and take a look at my wife, as it would have given both of us some comfort. Zero response. It was hours before someone finally came down to the ER, not specifically to see my wife, but because they were doing their normal rounds. We've since consulted with another neurologist who specializes in MS. The difference between his approach and Dr. Apatoff's is like night and day. read more

Dr. Apatoff clearly doesn't give a shit about his patients. I had an appointment today that he canceled last minute because his 'flight was delayed'. First of all, why didn't his receptionist call and let me know that he was going to be a no show? I explained to his receptionist that it had not only taken me an hour to get to his office but that I took time off of work for my appointment. She came back offering me an appointment 'for next week.' The reason I made an appointment with a neurologist and took time off of work is because I have a pressing issue and this response was unacceptable. Dr. Apatoff and his staff all seemed highly unapologetic about him not showing up to his own appointments. If you want to waste your time, go to him. If you work for a living, don't take the chance of going there and then not being seen. read more

I wouldn't trust him to treat my dog. My Mother was seeing him for years due to an MS diagnosis. I felt that he prescribed too many pain meds and for some reason whenever a new treatment came out she was told she was not a candidate. My Mother's symptoms were not in line with everything I knew about MS, I was in school for a medical profession at the time myself. I questioned Apatoff and asked for her MRI, I was pretty much told to leave and how dare I question him. Unfortunately due to his lack of care my Mother wound up in the hospital because of drug interactions that she never should have been given. The neurologist on call was an Angel from Heaven and ran all sorts of tests including a nuclear test. He asked to see me and I was told my Mother never had MS, ever!!! Apatoff basically ruined my Mother and all our lives for many many years. I would go for a second, third opinion before I believed a word out of his stupid bow tied head read more
