I had an unfortunate harder emergency last night. I got home and my lock broke, almost locking me out of my apartment. Luckily, I managed to get in without a locksmith but what I discovered was that a pin broke off my latch. I went to the original locksmith that installed this lock only to find out that they're no longer in business. I then tried to go too several others that were either closed or didn't have the piece I needed. Saifee was about to close in 30 minutes so I made the decision to Uber there to make it in time. It was my first time here and while I didn't shop around, I was impressed. They didn't know if they had the part I was looking for, but they took me to the back and dug through their toolkit. Luckily they found a compatible part and it was only $7.50. The new latch worked perfectly saving me from having to replace all my keys. I'll be back for future hardware needs. read more

Huge array of very fairly priced plants, also some more pothos inside. A decent selection of larger plants like corn plants, fiddle leafs and monsteras. More impressive, they have every single plant need you can think of: soil, peat moss, sand, fertilizer, water cans, spray bottles, tons of pots all sizes/types, pebbles, garden gloves, terrariums, everything! They have a bunch of macrame hangers starting at $8, and pebbles starting at $4. Lots of items were cheaper than what you'd pay on Amazon and comparable to even some discount stores in Brooklyn. I don't know anything about the hardware side, so don't even ask me, buuuuut I was surprised that the price of the plant pots wasn't exorbitant. We bought a tiny tree and a pot and took it back with us to New Jersey. I have never been on the PATH with a tree before. Poor service. I went in looking for a specific screw . I told the guy it's a European screw (Ikea furniture) and he says"I know". Ok then he goes to a box and pulls out a screw which is clearly not the right size and tries to sell it to me. When I tell him it's not right and show him that they're clearly not the same size, he says that's all we have. he also said that the hardware store doesn't have the tools to measure the screw to check sizing! I never thought I'd feel this passionate about a hardware store, but to borrow a phrase from Marie Kondo, coming into Saifee hardware brings me joy. They always have exactly what I'm looking for, whether it's some knickknack for my apartment or yet another plant. The staff is so friendly and always ready to help find anything. I bought a plant here a few months ago, and it has been looking thoroughly unwell, so I stopped in to ask what I've been doing wrong. The employee I spoke with figured out what was wrong, explained how to fix it, and even showed me a few similar plants as examples of what to look for. The only problem with this place is that the plants are so lovely and enticing that I always impulsively buy plants on my way home. They're taking over my apartment! Please send help! read more

Saifee Hardware & Garden in NYC received a large-ish shipment of alleged N95 disposable masks. The masks came in boxes of ca. 20 plastic-sealed 5-packs. They are selling each mask for $7.50 but you have to buy a 5-pack=$35 +tax. Of course, they are not considering to donate the masks to our desperate healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am obsessed with this place. It's not huge, but somehow they manage to pack in everything I'd ever need (...and want) into this corner gem. Saifee hardware is much more than a traditional hardware store. They have a great selection of plants, seeds, bulbs, potting equipment and decorative pots/vases/rocks. They also have a little household decor like candles and small gift items. What I love most about this place is their holiday section. For each season, they have a small but very well curated selection of holiday decor (and at reasonable prices.) I bought a ton of Halloween decorations here for a party, including these red bulbs I replaced in all my lamps in my apartment to create a spooky ambiance. After I showed the gentleman what I needed he pointed me in the right direction and answered all of my questions. Went here to get a key made and I guess these guys aren't experienced because they made me a totally wrong key that didn't work. I came back the following day and the guys first instinct was, "I didn't get my key made there, I came with another key to get a free key." He refused to make me another key for 10 minutes arguing with me that I'm trying to rip them off. I showed him the real key and the wrong key he gave me.. What kind of idiot scam is this?? Every time I go here and have a question the staff show no interest in helping you and when they do "help" it's usually not the correct product. Two visits and I've received 2 wrong product recommendations. I don't make claims of racism lightly but from my keen observation depending on who is needing help, you get a different response (Read some other reviews). Each visit was $100+ so you would think that a business would want to retain local customers rather than whiny east village Karens trying to return $6 succulents and energy stones... but have your way, if my tan is too much for your business then I will take this money somewhere else. read more

They have everything here! The store is chaotic but everyone working there knows where to find you're looking for so just ask. This store used to be called "Jack's Hardware" in the 70s and 80s, and the couple who ran it was so paranoid, they wouldn't let you buy anything. Since the store changed over to different management, I've been shopping here a lot. Saifee is well-stocked and the employees are knowledgeable about what they sell. In the blackout after Hurricane Sandy a few years ago, they were the only place I could find kerosene to fuel our oil lamps. And Saifee was one of the neighborhood businesses powering their lights with car batteries so they could stay open. They do have a really decent garden section, as well as their housewares section. Lately I've needed to replace an interior doorknob twice, and they were willing to sell me headless screws separately; those things are easy to lose. This store is very cramped and well-stocked; it's great to have it so close. read more

The hardware is waay overpriced and just basic stuff (Brickman, down the street a few blocks, is a real hardware store). There aren't a whole lot of garden supply places in the neighborhood (are there any others??) so I guess that's why this place is popular. There's a lot of decorative stuff which reminds me of Pier 1 Imports or something. Note that the majority of the flower pots, etc. come from Jamali on 28th street. If you're willing to make the trip up there instead, you'll save a bundle. read more

Maybe the hardware is expensive, but the gardening stuff here is both awesome and cheap. There's really good organic potting soil that you can buy by the cupful. They also have a nice selection of candles, from good quality reasonably priced ones to delightfully expensive chi-chi ones. $15 minimum for credit cards. read more

I love what they've done with their brick walls lately, which is to cover it with different lattices and trim options. I think more people are buying more garden things in the city lately. I've seen our choices in gardening supplies double in the last few years (maybe it's just because now I'm paying more attention). Anyhow, this place is expensive but I liked it a lot before I noticed that. I bought a plastic owl here to scare away pigeons and I still have the dear old bird. He doesn't actually scare much of anything away but I do like him in a sort of sculptural way. Changed my mind about Saifee since my first review. Their hardware department carries the basics-- everything the average apartment dweller would need. Their selection of plants and pots is huge and their prices for gardening supplies are competitive with Amazon on the items I needed. After seeing countless home and lifestyle magazines that source decorative items from their other location in the floral district, Jamali Garden (jamaligarden.com), I'm impressed with their buyers' style sense. Great place to have in the area. Has what you need. They're a little pricey, but I assume so is their rent, so it works for me. If you need to load up on basics this isn't the spot, but for a one off or a special purchase this place is great. - All the little things you need for repairs around the "house": screws, spackle, paint, wall anchors, extension cords, 2"x4"s, tension rods, etc, etc, etc. You'd be hard pressed to not find 90% of what you'd ever need here. - Very attractive plants and pots - Got some great decorative light bulbs--half covered in silverly metal on the inside--for an exposed light fixture on my ceiling - Not a bargain, but the staff has in the past steered me to just what I need, instead of trying to sell me on the pricier version. Good selection and convenient, but everyone I've talked to knows less than nothing. Ask for paint thinner and you may get spray paint. Ask for help mounting on a metal stud and you'll get told to "just use a screw". If you know exactly what you need you'll be fine. read more

It's pretty tight in there but they've got pretty much everything for your amateur handyman needs. There seems to always be a pretty available staff to point you in the right direction. Lots of cool decorative doo dads that you could probably find cheaper in the plant district's floral supply stores but by the time you schlep to 28th and 8th you'd probably be better off just paying a little extra to shop in the EV. I personally love to come here to see what plants they've got every now and then. It's a fixture for me anytime I need anything from a drill bit to caulking to fertilizer to a spare key, and I'd be sad if they ever closed because an Ace or Loewes put them out of business.
