I recently had my second baby and unlike my first I wanted to have a lactation consultant home visit as soon as baby arrived. I have PCOS and had a low supply and tongue tie with my first and wanted to get baby checked out right away so we could do what we needed to help milk production. Had I only known about them for the first kid we probably we be on our third kid already! I can't speak highly enough about my experience with the Bridgetown crew. I was in a bit of a panic getting set up and they jumped right into the deep end with me. Everyone we had help with our second kid brought a unique warmth that I think Merriah has some sort of 6th sense for. We really loved everyone that came but a special shout out to Erica for the amount of time you let us just share stories back and forth while we watched tv or just had a beer and relaxed. It took my wife a little bit to get comfortable with the idea of someone coming and watching our newborn while we slept but I swear that after one night she was an evangelist of not only this company but the entire concept. A journey into motherhood can sometimes feel overwhelming and scary. Being a first time mom and with no family, I knew that I wanted to have support during what people like to often call the "fourth trimester." I researched a lot of postpartum doulas in Portland but came to the conclusion that Bridgetown was for me. From the very beginning and throughout the process, Bridgetown made sure to truly understand what I wanted in terms of support. Words cannot express how much their support truly means to me and my little family. Doulas that helped me were Carri and Brita. It makes me emotional writing this because they both always made me feel so seen, heard and gave me so much encouragement throughout these past couple of months. All those late night feeding conversations, and knowledge sharing of how to care for a newborn - I truly appreciated all of it. We decided that with Twins for our first children we wanted help during the night. I ended up being hospitalized so we did a zoom meeting and greet. They were very easy to communicate with and get started. Our doula was Lexi and she was JUST what we needed. Our first night felt like we'd known her forever. Melissa is resourceful, responsive, and sympathetic to whatever lactation struggles you may be experiencing. Absolutely loved Bridgetown doulas! We worked with Katie who was a dream. We did daytime and nighttime. During the day she taught us important baby skills (swaddling, bath, bottle feeding, etc) as well as made us food, helped clean up, and generally give us a break. At night she obviously got us as much sleep as we wanted, as well as made us breakfast and handled light chores. I recently used Bridgetown Baby for postpartum night care and my experience was mixed. On the plus side, my baby was well cared for, which allowed me to get much-needed sleep during a challenging postpartum period. This was, without a doubt, the most important aspect for me, and Bridgetown delivered here.  However, I did have some issues. I felt judged for using a Baby Brezza, which made me uncomfortable. The scheduling was quite disorganized, leading to some unnecessary stress. I interviewed with someone who was originally meant to be my night doula and was told two days after having my baby, that she was busy with another family -- only to be told by a substitute that she had written in the notes she didn't like my family because of my dog. We specifically asked for someone comfortable with a large dog, and would have accepted this reasoning had we been told this directly!  Overall, while the care for my baby was solid, Bridgetown Baby could benefit from better organization and a more accepting attitude towards different parenting choices. These services are not cheap (and they shouldn't be), but they should also be judgment-free at the time when moms need the most care. read more

I could not imagine my postpartum and newborn experience without the help of Bridgetown Baby, especially as first-time parents. Our doulas were angels on earth. The fourth trimester can be such a trying chapter and our doulas were there to give so much-needed love, care, and support. They truly take care of the whole family and gently offer newborn advice while also letting you find your own way as parents. My husband and I also had a Great Start nursing class with Katrina prior to me giving birth. It was SO helpful and I feel like I can attribute so much of my nursing success to this education beforehand. After attending several Bridgetown Baby classes (Newborn Care and Breast/Chest-feeding) we ended up reaching out for postpartum lactation support in the days after our baby was born. My partner and I were exhausted and overwhelmed, and I was suddenly struggling to breastfeed and get enough food in her (at the hospital it hadn't seemed like an issue). We ended up purchasing a 3 visit postpartum lactation consult package, and it made ALL the difference - we developed a system so that we felt secure in her filling her tummy, I developed more confidence, and our breastfeeding relationship grew so that by a week and a half later we were independently breastfeeding and our little one was filling out nicely. Best postpartum decision I made! I had Rachel's support as a postpartum doula and she was a lifesaver through and through! She was full of very helpful insights with all things baby and answered so many of my new mom questions. She helped around the house during my recovery, shared great recipes with me and also made some of the meals. I got some great naps in while she was here too. For lactation, Melissa Curry is phenomenal. The first time I saw her, it was after a delayed milk supply, a lot of medical intervention, a jaundice scare because baby wasn't eating, and a team of pediatricians that were not concerned about tongue tie. My goal was to get off formula and be able to pump for 3 months, maybe latch sometimes...because 'I could handle the pain'. Immediately, Melissa could identify the somewhat unclear symptoms the baby had (pulling off nip, swallowing air, sleeping at boob, gagging--doing all the mistakes from time to time but only slightly. By the second session with Melissa the tongue tie surgery was identified as an option but not the only one, discussed seriously and only by my choice also scheduled. My supply was up with herbs, positioning was taking pain off my back, and I was able to begin to see past a couple months. Melissa also helped me work through many digestive issues our daughter was having--issues causing baby acne, gas, colic, sleeplessness and a lot of frustration. I was able to find some dietary solutions and supplements to help offer baby relief. I would never have guessed my babies issues were digestive. A few sessions later I graduated from Melissa's support feeling sad not to see her again but also transformed. I did not think I would be able to breastfeed. But I could! The baby continues to nurse and I only pump once at night if I feel like I might want to have a bottle handy. I know that I'll be able to go a full year and get and give the benefits of lactation to my baby and me. And I also know so much more about my baby. And I do less work-- I don't have to wash bottles, mix formula, wash pumps, try to latch. It's more simple. At the end of the day, Melissa is just a great human that radically supports mothers. She has a very grounded energy. Does not shame or judge. Offers solutions. And lets you have the experience that maybe you began to doubt you could ever have. read more

So there we are... new parents... just sitting in the hospital room holding this tiny little munchkin and soaking up the ecstasy, when.... he starts crying and losing his mind. "Oh! I know what to do!!! I gave birth so I should be producing milk now!! I'll just hold him up to my nipple and boom, problem solved!" Can you believe I actually thought it was gonna go like that? I can now sit back and laugh at the ignorance but in the moment it was the furthest thing from funny. I didn't realize it can take 2-3 days to produce milk (if ever) and once you do, it is not necessarily going to be flowing and abundant. In reality, my left boob produced JUST barely enough for him, my right side was just skating off my left boob's accomplishments like some lazy high schooler cheating off your test, my son was double tongue-tied, my nipples hurt SO much, and I could feel my motherly self-esteem just slipping away. Cue: Katrina. In walks Katrina with the biggest smile on her face. "Hey, mama! How's it going?!" She could see the tears welling up in my eyes just thinking about explaining what was happening. She said, "Listen... there are a LOT of things about breastfeeding that your family and friends just don't share for some reason and I can assure you... you're doing it right. It's just hard sometimes." She kept assuring me that I was going to be just fine and there were plenty of tools and tips that she was going to share with me. She ended our first meeting with, "Here's my number. I want you to reach out ANY time you need. I'm serious." What ensued from there can only be described as a love story of sorts. I mean... who would expect anything less from a love that starts with going topless on the first date? Over the following FOUR MONTHS, Katrina proceeded to teach me how to breastfeed. She supported me physically and emotionally through my breastfeeding journey which included referring me to a frenectomy doctor (for tongue ties), regularly examining my son's mouth, latch, weight, etc, teaching me various breastfeeding tools and "mom-hacks," texting me back immediately whenever I had a question about why my supply would drop suddenly from time to time or when I just wanted to send her a pic of my freshly pumped 8 ounces of pure heaven I pumped on New Years Eve complete with a champagne emoji! Katrina has been so supportive and I honestly don't know what I would have done without her. And I do mean this personally. She is one of a few consultants we originally met with and none of them really... ACTUALLY cared. But Katrina was all "ride or die energy" and I was into it. She really kept me going. And supported me in a way my husband or girlfriends just... couldn't. My son is almost 5 months old and I'm VERY proud to say that I am STILLLLL GOIN' STRONG!!! I send Katrina a text now and then letting her know the mark she left on us is still vibrant as ever and that she's the best. Katrina currently happens to be pregnant herself and I can't wait to hear about how happy and healthy her little guy will be when he realizes his mom is the queen of milk. I mean, it's kind of like realizing your dad is Gordon Ramsay. Like, "Damn... THAT worked out..." And a noteworthy mention to Bridgetown baby the company as well as their partners over at The Lactation Network (TLN) because in the end, believe it or not, my insurance ended up denying every single appointment with Katrina. I couldn't believe it. I called TLN who told me, "You know what... when we checked your insurance out, it said you were covered. So, even though you're not, we're just gonna cover you. Don't worry about it. You're all good to go." Talk about a good cry... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Bridgetown Baby and Katrina for helping me to give my baby the best gift I could ever give him. If you are considering working with a postpartum doula through Bridgetown Baby, the answer is yes! I wasn't sure what to expect when I was connected with a doula, but here's what I experienced when I followed through. Our family was given the gift of an extra caregiver, a friend, a therapist, housekeeper, and the list goes on. Most of the motherhood journey is not really about the mother, in my experience. And Raylea gave me a chance to focus on myself and remind me that it is not selfish to do so. I have been able to entrust her completely with both my littles, to the point where I am able to have a little me time, just for ME! I have literally felt giddy with happiness, being able to step away and shower, read a chapter of my book or sleep. It took about one session for me to get over the guilt of assigning tasks and now I barely even have to. My doula and I have found a rhythm and she goes above and beyond helping around the house without me even having to ask, which is wonderful considering the brain fog that comes along with a newborn. We had a fantastic experience working with Melissa Curry as our lactation consultant. With this being our third breastfed baby, we were not expecting the bumps in the road that we encountered, but we immediately felt lucky to have Melissa be the one that walked through our door when we needed help. We recruited support from Bridgetown Baby after the birth of our second child after our family visitor-helpers departed. With a partner with a demanding job outside the home, no local family and layers of isolation from our local community due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we found the support of a postpartum doula to be invaluable. Julisa joined our bubble when our baby was 10 weeks old and helped us for six precious weeks, keeping our household running smoothly so that I could solely focus on nursing and building good sleep routines for baby, and lavish attention on our 2 year old. Endless laundry, dishes, and meal prep were Julisa's domain -- all accomplished with a calm, quiet, joyful attitude. I especially appreciated that Julisa is equally talented at following recipes as she is at following roughly outlined methods (delivered verbally with frequent toddler interruptions!) and beautifully presented nourishing meals each night, leaving a clean kitchen behind. In the sleep deprived realm of newborn motherhood, that might as well be magic. We also thoroughly enjoyed Julisa's skill at baking, and her ability to engage our 2 year old in the activity made for some precious afternoons. Beyond simple household maintenance, Julisa was also a resource for nursing advice and a sounding board for sleep coaching. We worked with Bridgetown Baby postpartum doulas when we welcomed our twin sons in the summer of 2022. My husband and I joke now that we would not have survived those first 5 months without our Bridgetown Baby doula team! Our team of doulas were all twin experts (some even twin parents themselves!) and we learned so much from them that we started referring to them as "twin baby consultants". We had a few 5 hour day shifts during the first 6 weeks where one of our doulas would come and support the babies so we could nap or shower (glorious!) and answer any questions we had. One of the most meaningful moments was on day 10 of our boys being alive, we had one baby in the NICU and one at home, and our daytime doula Katie gently sat down on the couch next to me and asked "so how are YOU?". QUEUE THE TEARS!!! We learned that postpartum doulas focus on supporting the whole family: babies and parents with special emphasis on the birthing parent. We were also lucky to have nighttime support a few times a week for 4.5 months. We would count down the minutes until one of our doula team arrived on those "doula nights". My husband and I would grab a cocktail and snacks, talk for 10 minutes before swan-diving into bed for a glorious night of sleep knowing our babies were being cared for by someone who was more qualified than us! When I was pumping, our doula would take the breast-milk I had pumped and bag and label it and deliver freshly cleaned pump parts outside our bedroom door multiple times a night. Listen, folks: here's the deal, so pull up a chair... Merriah and the *entire* Bridgetown staff of doulas are all - to a person - highly trained, super knowledgeable and incredibly approachable and caring women. We received a 10-night package as a gift from my siblings and we loved our doulas and the care they provided us so much, that we extended our night time care with them for another 20 nights. Worth. Every. Penny. We wanted to specifically give huge thanks to Erica Cianni and Atika -- our two primary doulas -- for all of their laughter, kindness, professionalism, cooking, baby knowledge and reassurances. We've learned how to burp, hold, swaddle, feed and more. It's like having expert training, emotional help and sleep relief all at once. We're first-time parents who are a bit older than most and, despite our lifetime experiences, we're still newbies at parenting.
