There are so many riding stables that are much closer to my home, but I prefer to ride here (it's one of long islands best kept secrets) because everyone is so nice and there's no attitude or drama (unlike other stables on the island). I always feel like I have the ring to myself which is hard to find on the weekends. This farm is not massive but that's one of the things I like about it. Michelle treats all the horses like her personal pets and takes such good care of them. All of the horses I've ridden were amazing. Beau is by far my favorite horse but Kellie and Kiowa are also great. My 9 year old son used to take lessons on Kiowa and Pistol Pete. Michelle was great with him. Even though he wasn't really into riding she was so patient. Now he just loves to hang out at the farm while I ride on Saturdays. I've watched Michelle teach many children's lessons and noticed she explains riding in a way that children understand. With me (an adult that returned to the ring after a 30 year hiatus) she's soft spoken and provides quality feedback. She's certainly not one of those trainers that yells at you. If you're looking for a laid back down to earth stables with quality horses and a great trainer then look no further. You'll find your home here.

Riders Beware! My…read more10 yr old daughter was taking riding lessons here for almost 6 months until her trainer decided to move on from this barn to further her career on a different path. Another trainer who was not training my daughter originally but, who is a trainer & manager of the IEA team @ IHS was very unprofessional towards us. She claims she over sees everything; teaches 40 kids and gives 80 lessons a week there. We were going to weekly lessons there for almost 6 months but, on tues 8/15/23 no scheduled trainer in the book to teach my daughter. This trainer who runs things over there-"so she says"..did not approach, call or contact us to even apologize to explain the mishap and she was at the barn that day too. Another trainer nearby who happen to over hear the lack of professionalism going on offered to step in and help train her. My daughter got a 15 minute lesson instead of her 30 minute lesson that we usually get which we were charged $65.00 for that day. NM was not in the indoor arena for my daughters entire lesson which I can show/prove on video. NM walked into the arena the last 3 minutes of the lesson. My daughter was very upset during and after the lesson. We were very disappointed & dissatisfied with how we were treated and called liars that day since we've been a customer/rider for almost 6 months now. I called the barn manager- left message and got no response. So I called again and I finally got in touch with the barn manager. I explained the entire situation in detail and asked for a make up lesson. Instead of showing good customer service & compassion towards what happened I got told the financial difficulties going on within the barn. I also was advised that NM is "not a manager" there she is just a "trainer" that teaches lessons for the IEA team only. The Barn manager told me I would get a call back after talking to NM but, I never did! Instead once again I was shown unprofessionalism & unaccountability text messages from trainer NM. I knew then we would stop going to this barn for anything & everything but, my daughter had 2 lessons remaining on her package that I knew they would definitely not refund us for. I had enough of being mistreated by this place and watching my daughter get upset over this incident. I asked again on 9/4/23 for a make up lesson for that day and was denied it again. Then on 9/11/23 I explained to a another staff trainer very nicely why we would not be returning for lessons anymore. NM sends me another rude & arrogant text msg implying we are liars and we were not wanted as riders there! Smh-This was of course after I resigned my daughters lessons from IHS to a different trainer. People please be aware of this place and this inexperienced & immature horse trainer NM. She shows no good qualities of customer service & professionalism! I hope she treats the horses better then she treats her students & parents. Will be filing complaints against IHS with the BBB & Business Consumer Alliance Association. Giddy up riders....Beware and don't go here!

She knows what makes each individual horse and rider tick, which enables her to bring out the best in both of them. I especially love her knowledge in dressage and emphasis on flat work. Her extensive dressage background ensures that her students are equipped with a solid foundation in flatwork that translates beautifully over fences. In 5 months of consistent lessons, Sally completely boosted my confidence and got me back to jumping small courses after a long break. Sadly I'm not able to ride very often these days, but whenever I do get a chance to take a lesson with Sally, she is always able to meet me wherever I am that day and I walk away feeling accomplished. She has taught me not just how to ride, but how to truly connect with a horse in a way I never have before. Sally also has a lot of experience training horses, particularly thoroughbreds. I suppose it is…read moreproof that this gem of a riding school continues to be a best kept secret of the North Fork. Like many, I grew up riding and loved the sport as a child and young adult. After moving to Manhattan the opportunities to ride were few and far between. I was drawn to the North Fork for many reasons not the least of which was the farm/horse culture and after debating where to ride I turned to the locals for suggestions. Almost everyone suggested I call Jackie Bittner the owner and operator of Hidden Lake. It was the best call I could have made. Hidden Lake is absolutely wonderful in every possible way. The scenery is idyllic, the horses are superbly taken care of and Jackie's dedication to her craft is addictive. She is so passionate about her horses and her riders that riding with her feels almost like a gift. It has been almost 4.5 years that I've been riding at Hidden Lake and I sincerely can't imagine taking instruction from anyone else. As a note to all those in the Hamptons where I lived and rode horses, please consider making the brief trip to the North Fork instead. The price is right, the horses are fabulous, the instructor is wonderful, patient and kind and the down-to-earth environment of Hidden Lake will remind you of falling in love with riding as we did in childhood. I know this happened for me at Hidden Lake under the instruction of Jackie Bittner and for that I am so grateful.
