We were running a bit early for our hotel check-in and decided to find a winery. And, wow, did we find a great one! We were greeted by Steve, who shared info about the tasting and invited us to head to the fireplace and he would bring in our tasting flight. Because we do this a lot, we opted for a tasting flight of white, and one of red. This gives us an opportunity to taste small amounts and then decide what we might like more of. Frankly, we were surprised! The whites were not sweet - and we particularly liked the cuyoga white (sp?) so well that we enjoyed a bottle of it along with bread and oil. We enjoyed the reds a well, but just not as much as the white! Melissa kept the fire tended, it was a very nice experience to end our day of traveling. read more

We visited for the first time this past weekend and had an excellant experience! Everyone was super friendly, lovely atmosphere and great wines. They also have an amazing assortment of French cheeses that they serve with fresh bread. Not into cheese, they offer assorted meats, olives and spreads too. There is seating on 2 levels in their tasting room (which was the former horse barn) as well as patio seating over looking the vineyard. You can order tasting flights, by the glass and bottles. They offer table service too which is a nice bonus. They also often have live music. The staff went out of their way to make every guest feel welcomed! We will be back! The wine here is unbelievable and is as great as their staff. We had the pleasure of working with "Steve" (if memory serves) and he was a pleasure to work through a white wine flight and a dessert wine flight. We also got a bonus in honor of our 12th wedding anniversary! We got very acquainted with the Cayuga grape and its flexibility and utility as a grape that thrives in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Throughout the flights and the snacking with Riesling afterwards, we were very well cared for and the hospitality was top notch. The built in tasting room and their side dining room was so cozy and inviting while we were riding out a few sprinkles. Put this winery on your list to visit in Winchester! read more

Briede Family Vineyards is the epitome of a boutique winery. For those unfamiliar with the term, boutique winery typically translates to less production to focus on higher quality; less events-driven (don't expect many live bands playing in a boutique winery); and many are 21 and up and/or dogs not permitted. In the case of Briede Family Vineyards, dogs are permitted on the lawn areas and patio, but not in the tasting room or pavilion. And well-behaved children are welcome (check their website for details). The wines at Briede Family are special in that they are all hybrids, made through sustainable practices. So don't expect the usual suspects for Virginia wine here (chardonnay, cab franc, petit manseng, viognier, etc.) They do have wines you won't find in most other Virginia wineries, such as Cayuga white, a hybrid developed at Cornell and common in many Finger Lakes wineries. I've had Cayuga White during visits to the Finger Lakes and their styles up there are too sweet for me. But the version Briede Family creates is more balanced, definitely drier, and fruit-forward. Very good, especially chilled on a hot day. Another very unique wine here is Agathosune, dubbed an "orange wine," but not because its made with oranges. Basically orange wine is created using white varietal grapes but made in a red wine style. It tastes very much like a chardonnay so it should be a pleaser to the chard drinkers in your group. I didn't try the reds (too hot) but they had a solid offering of those, including a Tannat. Outside, there are nicely kept grounds, a covered pavilion (no dogs allowed), and trails that lead to the vineyards, which are "watched over" by sunflowers, which attract the pollinators which are a bit helpful in the grape-growing process. The tasting room manager Liz is very knowledgeable about their wines and wines in general. A great host! I give Briede Family five stars mainly because I don't want to break their streak of 5-star reviews. It's more of a 4 1/2 star place for me, mainly because the prices are quite high and that deters me from taking bottles home. It's a bit out of the way - about 20 minutes north of downtown Winchester off a country road. Have a map handy as WiFi signal, at least for me, was not great in this area of Virginia. The West Virginia border is only 3 miles away, making this I believe the closest Virginia winery to the WV line. read more

I've been going to this winery for 2 years, on about 10 different occasions. I have had the pleasure of sampling the selection of French cheese as well as the wine. I've watched this business grow from a small tasting room to what it is today, complete with their own signature perfumes in the most ornate bottles. The owners warmly welcome me and my guests every time I visit, and I watch how they are sure to warmly welcome each guest no matter how busy things are. I have never experienced rude or unpleasant behavior from them or their staff. In fact, their bassist invited my friend to play with their band one afternoon. It always feels like family there. And that's the best part...it's a place where no matter how long it's been since you visited, you truly feel warm, welcome, and can relax. You can count on the best wine, cheese, and perfume that their vineyard and French connections have to offer. And the owners and staff are totally approachable and knowledgeable. read more

Invited to go there with friends on a super hot day in July to listen to their favorite band. We brought our own food so we just ordered some hot bread and wine. The service and hospitality was great! They have a wide variety of wines to choose from. Some local and some others. The band was set up outside in the pavilion. Seating was very comfortable and they even had a large fan set up to move some air around. I would definitely visit again! read more

5 stars is mostly for the great hospitality shown by my hosts (and the winery's owners), who absolutely loved shooting the breeze with us. I even had a mini tour of the vineyard! Briede is a very different experience than most other wineries. For one it's small - 5 acres of vines (half Cayuga and half a Cornell University hybrid grape called Arandell), the tasting room is tiny, and it's a good distance away from...well...basically anything else. That said, I loved my experience. They even grow their wines organically (although the wines aren't certified organic because of how they are made). Four tasting options are available; 1) wines from the winery's own vineyard, 2) a trio of roses, 3) an assortment of imported (but reasonably priced) French sparklings and roses, and 4) an assortment of even fancier sparklings. I did options #1 and #3. When I saw they had Cayuga on the menu, I privately despaired - since I've always HATED this grape. Neither did I have high hopes for their Arandell, as hybrids are hit or miss for me. But color me shocked when I enjoyed both! Not surprisingly their wine maker is Matthew Finot, who is one of VA's best. The Cayuga is made in an almost Champaign style, and the Arandell is kinda-sorta like some Italian varietals I'm more used to. It's hard to describe, but this is definitely one of the best hybrids I've ever found. Yes it's far, but the chance to experiment with new wines and a great selection of imported sparklings makes it worth the trip. read more

This place goes straight to the top of my Virginia wineries experiences! First, the place is very small and doesn't have a corporate feel at all which I loved. Oh wait, first, the wine and champagne were legitimately good, not just good for Virginia, but legitimately good. Plus, there's nice outdoor space to sit with views of a small field, and the tasting is done a little differently, it was a few small pours of good stuff rather than a bunch of splashes of ok stuff. The couple that run the place are what really make it stand out though, they are so knowledgeable about the wines, sparklings, and champagnes they make and sell. And they were just such nice, welcoming, and interesting people. We left wanting to stay friends with them. Definitely check the place out if you get a chance. read more

The newest and greatest of Winchester. Loretta & her husband gave an absolutely incredible history of her wine, are very knowledgeable and friendly. The tasting is superb. She even offers a high end champagne tasting! (Who knew I loved champagne until I tasted these!?) this place is a quiet gem and she has a high bar set for what she puts in her tasting room. My experience went far above expectations. She also uses a different winemaker than the other local vineyards & that makes it even that much more unique. AND far more delish.
