Each year, I try to find something unique vs just a thing that he wouldn't use. It's an easy drive from DC, and the town of Frostburg is so adorable. We have two 5 year olds, and the staff was very friendly and explained how the tour would be structured. My kids just loved pushing the pedals and seeing the scenery pass by. For this first outing, I ended up booking one of the shorter tours, going with the Woodcock Hollow Express. It was the perfect option, especially with younger kids. It was entertaining enough, without them getting bored. It's one way, and man, our car went fast! I sat in the back, while my partner sat in the front of the car. It takes coordination on braking, which he clearly needed some work with! But we did manage to slow down before hitting the other guests riding in front of us. Once you reach the end of the track, the tour has a bus waiting, which will transport you back to the train station. The driver gave us some great tips and history as we rode the 15-20 minute ride back. Overall, a fantastic experience. I would totally do it again and try one of their other longer tours, especially as our kids get older.

We took a day trip to Frostburg specifically to do railbiking with Tracks and Yaks. I saw a video…read moreon social media and I was sold! We booked the Helmstetter Hotshot trip about a week in advance (when I checked the morning of our ride, it was sold out - so book early!). The price is per car (not per person), making it a reasonably priced excursion. We booked a two-person cart, which was $110 in total after fees (comes out to about $55 per person). There is also a four-seater which comes out to about $50 per person. We booked a 3pm ticket and were still en route to Frostburg around 2:50pm. Tracks and Yaks kindly called us to make sure we were still coming (we were about 2 minutes away). The follow-up is appreciated! We were glad to know that the rail bikes weren't leaving without us. Once we arrived, we had to scan a QR code to fill out a waiver. Their depot center has indoor restrooms and a small gift shop. We were given a quick safety briefing, were directed to our rail bike, buckled up, they oriented us to the brake system and had us do a quick practice run (they said no bumper cars) and we were off! Our car had a handbrake for each rider; another car had one handbrake lever for the entire car (that one went fast!). Our car also had little zipper pouches to secure small personal effects. There was also a crate attached to the back of the seat to store larger items at your own risk. I ended up putting my bag in the crate - I didn't find any crazy bumps along the way that put my bag in danger of flying out. You're required to stay seated and buckled for the whole trip. You also have to make sure your feet stay on the pedals or rest on the front or the car (if you can reach) - you don't want your feet dragging on the rocks or brush. The track is shady, so it did feel cool at times. We went on a perfect summer day, but I imagine it being a lot colder in the fall and winter (or when it's rainy... it is rain or shine). When the rail bikes pick up speed (12-15 mph), there is a strong breeze, so hold on to your hats! The car in front of us actually had one of their hats fly off and into the tracks. The staff was kind enough to pick it up off the tracks and returned it to the owner at the end of the trip (but returns are not guaranteed... this was a bright white hat lying in the middle of the tracks. Other personal items might not be so obvious). You're allowed to take pictures, but they warn you to have a death grip on your phone. The reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is because they said it was a guided rail bike tour, but there wasn't a whole lot of guiding. The guiding is more along the lines of directing traffic (we do go over a couple crossings, so the staff are positioned to make sure it's clear to proceed). There was only one pause at a scenic spot to briefly explain what we were looking at, to point out the small town and state border, and advertise other day trips offered by the company. The guide also explained the markers on the trail and mentioned the brush tunnel that we'd be going through. I would say the brush tunnel was the main event of the ride. The ride ended shortly after the tunnel, around a curve. At that point, we got off the rail bikes and climbed into the van waiting for us. The return shuttle was a missed opportunity to be a tour guide - our driver was soft spoken and only spoke when spoken to, and only to the riders closest to the front. I wouldn't describe the route as super scenic. I was expecting to see more mountain views, but it was mostly greenery. It was more of a ride through the woods. I imagine it being prettier in the fall to see the fall foliage. It was still a fun experience riding on the tracks and pedaling somewhat (it's mostly downhill, so you don't really need to pedal, only in a few flat areas). The Helmstetter Hotshot has approximately a two-hour duration. The two-hour duration includes the travel time from Cumberland back to Frostburg. Bikes started leaving the depot around 3:15pm and we arrived to the end of the track around 4:30pm. It was about a 15-20 minute drive back to the Frostburg train depot. We were finished and headed to dinner before 5pm, so the two-hour estimate was accurate. Staff were fun and friendly (don't forget to bring cash to tip at the end). They helped to snap a picture on our phone once we got situated and before we started rolling away. This isn't an experience to do every week, but it's fun enough to want to do more than once. This activity is recommended for all ages. I'm now obsessed with rail biking and want to do it everywhere and anywhere it's offered!

For my…read morehusband and myself, this was our second "Ride to the End of the Line" and although our first trip was great, this one exceeded any expectations we had; it was a wonderful all-around experience. There are three reasons this Potomac Eagle experience is worth repeating, and why the value is exceptional: 1. First and Foremost: The Potomac Railroad Employees From first contact to disembarking upon return to Wapacomo Station the employees made us feel welcome and valued. Although all of the employees were great, three young men stood out among their peers...Lucas, Carlos and Kalib made our trip a truly memorable experience. Immediately upon boarding, they offered us coffee or tea and throughout the day, they not only checked-in to see how we were doing, they stopped by and talked to us. I watched them treat other guests in our car the same. When we learned these young men were working their first jobs, we were amazed; they truly epitomized superior customer service. In today's world, I rarely see such outstanding care and service. Potomac Eagle is doing something right; other service providers could learn from the Potomac Eagle version of excellence. 2. Second: Superior Food throughout the trip Since we were on the all day trip, our reservation included breakfast and lunch appetizers with a small treat before we disembarked at Petersburg. Upon reboarding, Lucas and Carlos immediately welcomed us back with coffee and Arnold Palmer (lemonade-sweet tea) drinks. They kept our cups and glasses full for the entire return trip. The true value from our trip, however, was our Superior Dining experience. Chef William prepared a four-star, four-course dinner (Superior Dining class) that will bring me back later this summer for another excursion. We had beef tenderloin and Chilean Sea Bass w/Lemon for our main courses with appetizers, salads, and desserts. I felt like I gained 3 pounds from the outstanding dinner alone!! 3. Third but not least important: The Trough Canyon Experience Approximately mid-way to Petersburg, the train stops to allow passengers into their open-air gondola car for a 45-minute unobstructed view. While the train goes through the Trough Canyon, passengers see eagles soaring, dear foraging, and other natural wonders. The trip offers an opportunity only available via the Potomac Eagle...driving a car wouldn't be the same. For all the great things I can say about the Potomac Eagle experience, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the opportunities and people in Petersburg. The trip offers an additional excursion to Smoke Hole Caverns. For those who do not go to Smoke Hole, there are small vintage shops, museums, restaurants, and/or a chance to sit back, relax and to just be in the moment. It's a day away from the normal grind...Ride the Potomac Eagle to the End of the Line. Take a step back in time and enjoy!

My mom arranged for us to go on this tour, after having read positive reviews on another website. We didn't really know what we had in store for us, but she stumbled onto a local treasure. Once you park and (probably) hike your way toward the rendezvous point, you'll head inside a church lounge where you can sit comfortably and get some background information. Your guide will be dressed in historical garb, and he may even break out into song at various points, between deep-dive presentation of historical narrative. Okay, so costume and singing aren't usually my scene (and in fact, they sometimes make me cringe), but this expert is so totally in earnest that it was actually refreshing. How can you not respect someone with this level of knowledge and commitment? You really feel like you're seeing the area through a historical lens. Every sight you see is informed by the guide, which adds rich layers of context. I admit that I kind of felt weirdly sorry for the other area tourists who were roaming the place uninformed. Some of the rocks, rubble, ruins, trails, and geography you see played a role in American history that you might not recognize, and this awareness made so many of the local sights more enjoyable. You do plenty of walking. Bring water, and wear comfortable shoes and clothing. You will also have breaks from the walking to reconvene. The tour was such an experience that we actually had ice cream with the other tour group members afterward to rehash and decompress. The guide does a haunted tour that I haven't tried, but which he describes as more lighthearted. I'd totally go back for that, and I'd bring any history nerd who visits the area to the O Be JoyFull tour in a heartbeat. Not the right setting for someone who wants a more consumer-based or superficial visit to Harper's Ferry, though. They can wait for you at the ice cream parlor!

The day tours are lengthy, ~ 4hrs. If you want something shorter, then the ghost tour may do (I heard there's still history sprinkled in). Harper's Ferry is hilly so be prepared for that. Also, if you cross the railway bridge you can view the old canal.
