I used to be so-so about bar b que until we stopped into Briggs. We were warmly welcomed by a sweet woman wearing an apron and told to sit anywhere. She was busy holding down the fort-taking orders and cooking too. I later learned that it was a family run business. I ordered the "spicey meatloaf" with 2 sides (there were a lot of side options to choose from). My two sides were fried okra and stuffing. She ordered the chopped bar-b-que pork with coleslaw and mac 'n cheese. We sampled each other's food with the satisfied expression of closed eyes and a 'MMMM" while eating. Everything was DEE-liscious! Wonderfully seasoned, great portions and perfectly cooked. It's one of those times when I wished that I had a bigger belly or a clone, so that I could try more food!...or pick up and move to Yanceyville NC! Other patrons asked a lot of questions about the other menu items. That's when I learned about their "black cornbread". The owner said it was her father's recipe. It uses black cornmeal and other spices. We took ours to go and later (really) enjoyed it back at our hotel. The owner/cook also gave us a sample of her chicken salad. It was so so good, seasoned wonderfully...more reason to be fatter to be able to eat more!! I would recommend anything and everything there, because I'm sure it's cooked right and with love! We ended up trying Brigg's because it was on the way home from a weekend trip. When I walked in the door I was expecting your typical NC BBQ joint, but was surprised to find it's a Jamaican restaurant now. It looks like the restaurant recently changed hands and the new ownership is taking it in a new direction. Consequently the menu is a mashup of the old menu and Jamaican dishes. I was very pleasantly surprised with my curry chicken served with rice and cabbage. It was a typical Jamaican yellow curry with bone-in chicken and potatoes. The curry was very flavorful, but not spicy. In hindsight, I should have asked if they had some Jamaican scotch-bonnet hot sauce to spice things up a bit. The cabbage, cooked with ham hocks or something similar was fantastic; it was the best cabbage I've had in a long time. All in all, my meal was excellent. My wife tried the BBQ. The fries were cooked to order, the slaw was creamy, but the BBQ was a disappointment. I tried a bite and it reminded me of the sort of pork BBQ that you can buy in the grocery store. It was a definite meh, at best. My curry chicken was definitely a 4-star meal, while the BBQ rates 2-stars, so everything averages out to 3 stars. That said, I suspect that if you stick with the Jamaican menu, you're likely to get a 4-star or better meal. One last thing: If you pay with a credit card, they hit you up with a 4% upcharge. This restaurant won an award for Best Barbecue in Caswell County for 2010, heck it may be the only Barbecue restaurant in Caswell County - but whatever, the BBQ served here is very, very good - frankly, I was very surprised how good it was. While there is not a lot of smokiness in the meat, it is moist and tender, with a nice Eastern NC style vinegar/pepper sauce liberally applied. The slaw is a white, mayo based version, which goes well with this pork on a sandwich - and the sandwich here is of a good size. All in all, a nice find, and at under $4, a good buy, as well. The Chili Dog here is also excellent. The chili is meaty, and rich with flavor. The weiner is the typical Southern red dog - the final product is nice. The place is small - 10 or 12 tables and booths. Serves breakfast, as well as lunch and dinner. Offers daily specials - meat and 2 kinda items. Service is friendly & efficient. Doesn't provide much in the way of ambiance, but you'd expect that. read more

Great little spot, very cozy, good food, good prices and friendly and helpful staff. I've been here once before with my brother, once for lunch and today for breakfast. Both meals were tasty, cooked to order and at good prices. Could not rate it a 5 star because its only a small breakfast and lunch place with paper plates and utensils but it's still a safe bet for a good home cooked meal and comfortable setting. One other high mark for Briggs is they have a 100 Sanitation rating! read more

We were looking for a place for lunch while on our way from Raleigh, NC to Bedford, VA. We pulled up Briggs Bar-B-Que on our phone and stopped in! This was a great decision! A plate full of amazing food for a great price! The small diner atmosphere is greatly enhanced by the service. Friendly, sweet owners who are a joy to be around! The Bar-B-Que was so good we ended up talking home a 2lb quart sized container! We would HIGHLY recommend that you enjoy a meal there! read more

Briggs is a nice little surprise tucked away in Yanceyville. You wouldn't expect to find such a good BBQ joint in Caswell County, but Briggs does BBQ and sides very well. This is absolutely a local place. I think I was the only one that hadn't been in Yanceyville my whole life, but when you're surrounded by locals, you know that you've come to the right place. I obviously got the BBQ plate for my lunch and chose to go with the potato salad and slaw as my sides. The meal came out very quickly. I waited at most five minutes for everything to arrive. The BBQ itself is very good. Very moist with a lot of flavor. I tried the BBQ before reaching for the sauce and honestly it didn't need any. They obviously pre sauce the meat and it is definitely an Eastern NC style sauce. The slaw was good on it's own or on the cue. It was a white mayo based slaw. The potato salad was also very good and I would definitely order it again. The place is very small. Maybe 8-10 small tables at most. For warmer days, they also have some picnic tables outside of the restaurant. The service was great. My waitress was attentive and exuded southern hospitality. The prices are very reasonable as well. This is some great BBQ here and probably some of the only that you will find for miles. Don't overlook this little joint in Caswell County. I will definitely be back for some BBQ, and I wouldn't mind trying some of their breakfast as well. read more

This place was delicious! I went with my dad on a road trip and we both agreed it was an excellent find, we will definitely be back. I got a barbecue plate with fries and okra. It came with homemade cornbread that was buttery and warm. The barbecue was moist and had a wonderful smoky flavor. Definitely some of the best I've had in a while. The plate cost $7.99 which was very reasonable! The restaurant was small but very cozy. The waitstaff were friendly and there were lots of locals! A glorious diner in the outskirts of nowhere. It's where the locals go for breakfast, no doubt about it. And it is very, very good -- everything you could possibly hope for in a southern breakfast diner. Plus, the lunch is pretty good, too (with a surprisingly varied menu, considering the minimal -- but super-friendly and hard-working staff). A note to the BBQ tourists, though -- this is really a diner not a bbq-specific restaurant, so it's not fair nor accurate to judge it in the same category as classic NC barbeque stops like Bill's/Parker's/Wilber's/etc. That said, they do have bbq and it's pretty good (and the only option for miles and miles around). read more

I stoped in on the way back to DC and it was amazing. I got a swett tea and a barbeque sandwich with hushpupies. The sauce was just ok on it's own but on the sandwich and with hushpuppies it was delicious. The service was great and the coustomers look like they've been there 24/7 for 50 years. Wonderful home cooked meals. Even if you've never been their before they make you fell right at home. Great place to get a fast hamburger or hotdog ,or just sit awhile and enjoy a home cooked meal while watching the small town locals come in and out greeting each other like a family reunion.
