My husband's family is originally from Danville and his grandparents are buried there. We always stop at this store on our way to Charlotte because they have the best chicken salad ever. Midtown is our go-to place for fresh milk, deli sliced cheese, Boar's head lunch meats, and local baked goods. They also have a great selection of local and regional produce, including dry beans. In addition to all the local goodies, they have nearly everything you could need from a 'big box' grocery store, so you can save a trip elsewhere. They usually have dragon fruit, mushrooms, limes, and hydroponic lettuce - just to name a few more 'exotic' fresh grocery items. They use large paper grocery bags and have excellent customer service, as well as accepting milk bottles and egg cartons for returns. We love Midtown! read more

Bets chicken sales , EVER ...We started out with buying just the regular chicken salad and soon learned that we absolutely love the Cranberry Pecan one better ......It has become a staple in our home ! Best selections of meats in a 100 mile radius of our home.....we drive almost an hour there just because we love this little quaint market so much ! The thing I miss most about my Hometown MIDTOWN CHICKEN SALAD! I've tried to find something close but to no avail! Whenever I get to Danville I try to buy a few pounds to take back home! Made a special stop to check out this cute little market while driving through town. They have a wonderful fresh meat/butcher section and wish I'd brought a cooler with - next time. They also make delicious chicken salad that you can buy by the pound or less and pimento cheese. Had to get some of that! Love the old wooden floors and great selection of fresh produce and other grocery items. Fresh eggs were being delivered from a local farm while I was there. Ample parking and friendly employees. Whilst extensively exploring the area in an effort to refine the boundary between Virginia and North Carolina, colonist Wm. Byrd felt as though he had wandered from Dan to Beersheeba (Judges 20:1), and thus named the river on which he camped the Dan River.  It only made sense, then, when the town that eventually sprung up on the banks of this river would be named Danville. Danville, Virginia. The last, albeit brief, capitol of the Confederate States of America, it has experienced a roller-coaster-like history, including some attempts at revitalization in recent years. But one stalwart institution that has remained here for 99 years is the Midtown Market. Originally opened in 1921, it has been under its current family's ownership since 1952, and they make it their mission to consistently supply locals and visitors alike with quality provisions. The place is well stocked for its small size, and is also quaint with its creaky wooden floors, local products, and kindly employees. What this place is probably best known for is its chicken salad. Most reviewers mention it. It even made Paula Deen's list as one of the top 10 chicken salads you ought to try. And I can tell you that in the 20 minutes I was there browsing around, the cooler where it is kept had a constant flow of people coming in to buy it. So I purchased some as well. Will it stand up to all the hype? It is very good. I don't know that it is top ten you have to try, but it is indeed tasty. The consistency was excellent. It is neither too creamy nor too dry. It has a nice compliment of greenery in it, though I admit that I prefer a heavy amount of that in my chicken/tuna salads. The flavor is pleasant. There were a few pieces of chicken that were not fully mixed in, and this is a danger when you are churning out a ton of chicken salad each week. That's right: a ton. 2000 pounds. 4400kg. 143 stone.  They also sell other house-made and locally sourced products, including pimento cheese, milk, chili, cole slaw, and more. In addition, they prepare boxed lunches and have a small butcher shop. This is a really neat place and definitely worth a stop if you're near Danville.  Try the chicken salad. Only been a few times, got the chicken salad as reviews all say how good it is, I must say it's the best I've ever had, very good! But, I was wrong expecting the same good taste in other products made by this store. The store brand chili I tried, (now these are just my opinions yours may differ) the chili was not good at all, just ground beef, ground more on the fine side,but that's ok, it just did not taste very good, no veggies detected, what I didn't eat was tossed.Tried the store brand pork bbq, again a disappointment, it also lacked any bbq flavor, ingredients mention vinegar and red pepper, didn't taste any, maybe a little bit of vinegar.it was like plain pork tossed in a pan and cooked.I just added Bbq sauce to somewhat enjoy it.Going by the (taste of)great chicken salad led me to try other store made products, and expected same good taste, but was highly dissatisfied.I also have tried the "JJs" homemade sausage, lacked any seasoning or spices that make sausage what it should be, wouldn't buy again. I'll just stick with the C. salad. The Cole slaw made by Ma Possums (they have an old established restaurant in town) was very good in my opinion. The ground beef is nice quality,good tasting, and the other cuts of meat looked very nice and fairly priced. Friendly service all around.Nice old school store. read more

Think for a second about what you have come to expect from a grocery store--huge...bright...tons of selection...and realize that while you get those things, you give up so much more. You are a number to them, standing in line for 20 minutes because adding a cashier would hurt their stock price. They make you walk huge amounts for simple items like soda, milk, eggs, etc because they realize you will purchase more by walking by more items. The fruit and veggies are from other countries, not down the road because it is cheaper (higher stock price). You are out of luck if you can't find something or need some help getting something down. Now, imagine with me, a place that the second you walk in the door you are greeted, maybe even by name. Where instead of miles of aisles, you can get in and out without spending an hour. Where your favorite items from around town and the region come together--cakes from PJ's, milk in glass bottles, fruit and veggies for local farmers and the best meat (not just steaks) and chicken salad in town. Sure you might be paying a bit more, but the question I ask is what is your time worth? Spending a dollar or more at Midtown might mean you saved 15-20 minutes shopping. But you also get to enjoy better quality items in my opinion. You are supporting the local economy instead of sending your money out of state or overseas. You might realize that more selection isn't all that it is cracked up to be. Here is my challenge to anyone reading this, if you haven't been to Midtown yet--give them two weeks. Do all of your shopping there for two weeks--enjoy the local products and experience a bit of what of life used to be when times were simpler. My guess is that you still might go to the big box to get a few things that you can't find at Midtown but I will be shocked if you don't Midtown part of your weekly routine. But leave some steaks and cake for me, ok? read more

This market is my all time favorite!! I used to live in Danville, and now live 4 hours away. I had a Doctor's appointment today in Danville, and I made a stop at Midtown. They have the nicest staff! Kent cut me a couple of NY Strips and they loaded them up in an insulated bag with ice, along with their famous chicken salad. Thanks for the great service!! I miss you guys!! read more

It just came out in the news that Paula Deen had identified Midtown Market's chicken salad as one of the top 10 in the entire nation. Everyone around here knows how great it is and it blows out the door as much as 800 pounds a week (at holidays). While your picking up the pint containers and swing by the bread aisle and pick up a loaf or two of fresh Rising Sun Breads from nearby Martinsville and smear some of that chicken salad on a tasty Cranberry/Oat/ bread slice, toasted if possible. Delicious! The modest meat case features freshly cut roasts, steaks, stew beef, poultry, pork and delicious smoked pork chops that make a killer breakfast. Was just in town for some mtbing at the nearby Angler's Ridge trail system (which was awesome) and found this place online as good alternative to a chain grocery store. It was great. Carries Homestead Creamery dairy products (except cream), localish goat cheese, and some great looking meat (although we didn't buy any). Not a health food store, but definitely locally owned. I liked spending my money there. Staff was super nice, and they were hopping on a Friday night right before closing. Easy to get to, tons of parking. Will definitely be back. read more

A LOCAL grocery store? That's a thing? Apparently, yes. And I am so glad it is. It's a bit more expensive than your Piggly Wiggly or Food Lion for some items, but you can find some great specials for some local stuff. Milk in glass bottles from nearby farms. An actual butcher that will cut steaks for you in the size you want. Local wine. (Some) local produce. It's pretty much amazing. On the sign outside it says they have the best steaks in town, and they are definitely right. read more

Vacationed with a friend and his parents (who live in Danville) two years ago and they brought several quarts of chicken salad to the beach. This stuff is like crack!!!
