Solid BBQ in a building that resembles a converted Biscuitville. You can tell they put a lot of thought into their recipes and menu - it can be easy to pass this place over but it is a gem. I spent about $16 after tax and tip and left with a full stomach. The sandwiches are reasonably priced, starting at $6 or 7, but I'd recommend getting one of the dinner plates - either pork or chicken, which is $11 or 12 and comes with hush puppies and two sides. I was pretty basic and got the baked beans + collard greens; the beans were thick and had the right amount of sweetness, while the collard greens offset the sweetness perfectly. There are a few different sauces on the table, it always makes the dining experience more enjoyable to sample each of the sauces with the meat. read more

A good day of shopping in Danville called for a good dinner. Checkered Pig was in the neighborhood, so we cruised on in. Immediately we were impressed by the trophies and awards around the building. (we watch many food shows, and the name did sound vaguely familiar) For the sake of trying as much as possible we went with the Half-Champion's Feast: Half slab of our award winning ribs, 1 lb. of chopped BBQ, 1 lb. of beef brisket, chicken leg and thigh, 3 sides and hushpuppies). For the sides sides we opted for baked beans, Mac n cheese, and Cole slaw. The ribs were tasty and tender, though being St. Louis style, they were a little more effort to eat vs. baby backs. The chopped BBQ was probably the best I've had in NC, even without adding any of their four sauces. The brisket was tender and flavorful, though the actual star of the four was the chicken. I haven't had smoked chicken that good in a long time. The baked beans were a little different, though quite tasty. My girlfriend couldn't decide whether she liked them or not, but ended up finishing them while deciding. The Mac n cheese was good, but not outstanding. Hushpuppies similarly were good, but not great. The only disappointment of the night was the Cole slaw, which was quite bland. Service was great. We will definitely return. read more

When I saw this establishment had 3.5 Stars I was hesitant but not deterred, I am a BBQ enthusiast and I don't travel to this area often, so who knows when I would be able to try this place again? To me, 3.5 stars is a deserving rating, it's not a bad place, it's not a great place, and some of the items are hit or miss. I got the 3 meat platter consisting of brisket, ribs, and sliced pork for $24 and it came with two sides, and fries and hush puppies. The hush puppies and fries were exactly what they needed to be - crunchy and a great vessel for the meat to travel down the esophagus with. No complaints here. The brisket was a little dry, and lacking Smokey flavor, as was the ribs, which tasted good but not great. Both were served semi-warm. The sliced pork is what really saved this meal from being hugely disappointing. Slightly sweet, nice and juicy, and overall delicious, I wish I had ordered a sandwich of this instead. I had tried both the banana pudding which was serviceable and the blueberry cobbler which was cloyingly sweet. I would eat here again, now knowing what is good. Is this a must try? Called and spoke to a manager "Tammy" who said, well mistakes happen, so all I can do is let you come back to pick up the fries (30 minute drive time at best) or "give" you a free fry order when you come back.. You know if you PAY for something and don't get it, you're not "giving" a free fry because you've already paid for it, right? Not the first time we've had poor service here. They come out with the food but NO extra ranch so she went back to drive thru and pulled forward. She politely told the female that rolled her eyes earlier she didn't get the extra ranch. The employee shut the doors in her face and stood at the window messing on her phone for a few minutes. She finally walked away to get the extra ranch and came back phone still in her hand. We eat at Checkered Pig often in Danville and Martinsville but not going to frequent this one anymore unless something is done with this employee. The Checkered Pig BBQ & Ribs has an excellent pedigree being owned by KCBS competitors. Their high finish in competitions may have set my expectations too high. I tried their BBQ sandwich, which I've got to tell you is huge! This is one big sandwich with much more meat than your typical bbq sandwich. The problem with the sandwich is that the bun is so large it overshadows the bbq. To get a better feel for the taste of the meat, I ordered a second sandwich and ditched the bun leaving the "Q" and slaw. The pork was good, but honestly, lacked any smoky flavor...or much flavor at all. Adding their sauce really helps, but great bbq should stand on its own. The slaw was a "white" slaw and was good. In this case, a red bbq slaw may have made the sandwich better. Since I only had the opportunity to sample the pork bbq, I'm looking forward to a return trip to try the ribs, sides, and that banana pudding. read more

This is really good bbq, the hush puppies we ordered on the side were delicious! My son had the kids ribs and they looked delicious-he ate all of them and the fries were the best. I had the chopped bbq pork nachos and as you see in the pic it looked amazing and tasted just as good. My daughter had the beef brisket nachos ans they too looked delicious-we both ate all of it! We ordered the banana pudding for dessert and omg it didn't look pretty but it was DELICIOUS and it was served warm which was the first time i had ever had it that way but it was super tasty! OMG!!!!! This place has gone downhill!! My hubby and I tried this place today for lunch. Instead of counter ordering they have seated tables with waitresses. WTH??? What was wrong with the counter order?? If it's not broke don't fix it!! First of all our waitresses was awful...was chatty patty with the table beside us instead of taking care of us. All she talked about was missing work because her daughter was sick!!! Now do I really want to hear that while she is our waitress!!! Heck No!!! Now we are paranoid we might get sick!! SMH!!! Now about the food, we ordered our usual. The portions were so little compared to when we have came here before....2nd turn off! The taste and quality was awful! Beyond awful! Our food was warm at most....I guess they precooked it and put it under a warmer, explain why it came out in less than 5 mins after we ordered it. 3rd turn off!!! SMH! Last thing, our waitress had a computer thing she was carrying around and that is how she checked us out...how we paid our bill....she hovered over me the whole time I was clicking on payment and tipping. I would not recommend this restaurant - not if you like real BBQ. There were 3 of us who ate here (our only time ever) and none of us liked what they ordered. I chose sliced pork (because pulled pork was not an option) and it was like no sliced pork I have ever had (or seen) before. It was thick, and resembled boneless pork chops. The BBQ sauce was on the side and all 3 options were horrible. I also ordered BBQ baked beans which came with bell/green peppers and were equally horrible in taste and fries (I can't remember if I liked those). My husband ordered beef brisket which he described as "frozen, tv-dinner quality." He did not eat much. I can't remember what our friend ordered but he was equally disappointed. Was happy to find more red sauce BBQ options after many days further south with mustard or vinegar sauces in the south, this was more familiar and the brisket grilling sauce was good. There was a local dish - hot slaw - a coleslaw with ketchup and hot pepper seasoning, not bad. The brisket was tender and flavorful, not that wet, good with the added sauces. They catered our rehearsal dinner that we had at Ballad Brewing and they did an excellent job. They set everything up, they even gave us a few vegetarian options for some of our vegetarian guest, and everyone loved it. The food is great, but the way an employee treated me when I came through the line today was terrible. I pulled up to order through the drive through and waited for about 11 minutes until they could take my order. Once I ordered I pulled around to pay, I was asked with an attitude if I was the one that called and said I had been waiting for an hour and I said no, which I thought was very unprofessional to ask me that. I got my food and when I looked in the bag, I noticed that my fries were not in the bag for my order. I waited until the lady came back to the window where she proceeded to yank the window open and just looked at me like I was bothering her. I told her that my fries for my second barbecue sandwich was not in there, but she got an attitude and said it was in the plate, which was my other meal that I ordered that had the fries. I then told her that I had my fries for that order, but not for my other order and she then says she didn't charge me for that. However, she then closes the window and walks away and I checked my receipt and she had charged me for it. She comes back and hands me my fries and doesn't say a word. This may look kinda like a fast food franchise type outfit, but it definitely isn't. You do get your food pretty quick, but this is just the 2nd location of the Checkered Pig, the first & original being a few miles away in Martinsville VA near the Martinsville Speedway, hence the racing type theme. Checkered Pig was opened by a guy that started out cooking BBQ as a hobby, then started a BBQ catering business & then opened the first restaurant in Martinsville which was originally named Pigs'R Us. At that time he & his wife started cooking in BBQ competitions all over the country using Checkered Pig as their team name. They started winning all kinds of awards & gaining recognition so they changed the name of Pigs'R Us to the Checkered Pig & later opened this 2nd location in Danville. The husband & wife team were featured on an episode of BBQ Pitmasters on the Destination America Channel & was recently awarded 4th place overall out of over 2800 competing teams for 2014 at the Kansas City BBQ Association awards banquet. They also won 3rd overall for their chicken & 5th overall for their brisket for 2014. They have plenty to choose from on the menu, so there's a little something for everyone. Burgers, HotDogs, salads, sandwiches & of course the BBQ, chicken & brisket with a host of homemade sides. I really like their style of BBQ, it's a sweet vinegary type, more to the sweet side than vinegary. It's very clean, no chunks of fat or anything in it, just good pork with a nice smoky flavor. The brisket is outstanding as well, I get it every time I stop in. Really tender slices with a good smokey flavor with a nice smoke ring around the outer edges & dressed with their thicker KC style bbq sauce. The sides I have tried were all very good, my favorite being the green beans. They have a slight smokey flavor with bits of pork in them. The potato salad is very creamy, mainly because of how much the potatoes have cooked down, more mayo than mustard, with chunks of boiled egg & sweet pickle cubes in it. The mac & cheese isn't a favorite of mine though, just because I'm not a big fan of the creamy type, I like the baked type best, theirs has a little velveeta-ish taste to it, but you can still see that there is shredded cheddar in it. They do have a few of their own sauces which are bottled & available for purchase. This location is a little hard to see from the main road, it's directly behind the Kicked Back Jack's on Piedmont Dr. Stop in & see what you think, definitely worth checking out if you're in the area & looking for some good smoked goodies...& this location does have a drive-thru. read more

Checkered Pig sits across the mall in a converted, and sorely missed, Backyard Burger building. They built a smoker onto the back of the building and the smell alone will guide you to them. I really like their brisket and it's what i order pretty much every time. It has a great smoke ring and is sliced thick for the platter and sandwich. I don't really care for the sauce that comes with it, too sweet for me, so ask for it on the side so you can test it out for yourself. They have their in-house sauces on the table and I much prefer their hot sauce on there. I was really in mood for ribs this time, so I brought home a half-rack platter. They were tender, smoky, charred and well seasoned with their rub. The only let down here is the sides. I haven't found one that I like yet. The baked beans, mac & cheese, fries and hush puppies all seem canned or frozen. But if it's smoked meats that your after, this is definitely the place to go. read more
