Holy mackerel, what an amazingly fun time I had with Holly, and the three other guys that were with me today. I've lived in the SF Bay Area for 34 years, and grew up in SF, but I got to try for the first time a delectable morsel of passionfruit caramel chocolate candy at Christopher Elbow (it was so good, I had to go back for seconds), got to see the inside of a sake shop, hung out at a local park in front of a Burning Man sculpture, got a tour of an ice cream shop that uses liquid nitrogen (and not dry ice, as I had assumed) to make their product, got to see the inside of a costume shop, had a pomegranate cider (from the Davis, CA area) at Toronado, went to Alamo Square park for the first time, saw the painted ladies, and hung out at a hybrid bicycle repair / coffee shop which I never even knew existed. Not only were previously unknown parts of the city opened up to me, the fact that you are part of a group means you get to enter stores and shops you never would have dared step foot into, especially before noon, when you are likely to be the lone customer, the center of attention, and you'd have to endure mundane conversation with the staff like, "Hello, welcome to the store", and "Please let me know if there's anything I can help you with." Not only was the tour a blast, but I also got the pleasure of company for lunch with Johnny from Ireland, Matthias from France, and Alan, a local and friend of Holly's. Thank you so much Holly for giving me more than half of the piece of chocolate that we were allowed to sample, and for letting me eat most of the uneaten half of your beer sausage sandwich, and, of course, for organizing a splendid tour of Hayes Valley, the Haight, and Divisadero. read more
