My son and I made a day trip to Alcatraz island and it was a very enjoyable experience. I do agree that it's a little pricey but if you spend a solid 2-3+ hours there, I think it's worth it. Pros: + The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. + Once you get on the island and go through the 5 minute orientation from the NPS ranger, you're free to roam about. + The audio-guided tour is actually REALLY good. It was my first time and I thought it would be cheesy but it was engrossing and informative. + Restrooms were very clean and not crowded (at least not the guy's restroom). + There are some truly AMAZING views of the bay. Bring a travel-safe camera. Neutral: ~ There's restrictions on food and drink (only bottled water is allowed in the majority of the park). So plan ahead. ~ San Francisco traffic is real and kinda sucks. Plan ahead for delays. ~ A good portion of the park is outdoors (which isn't a negative but means that it's impacted by the weather). It gets super windy so plan ahead and dress appropriately. Cons: - The price is indeed a little high. I don't think I'd go here all the time. Once every couple years is probably fine. - A friend told me that there's a LOT of bird poop around and they were right. It's not enough to impact walking but does detract from the experience slightly. read more

Poor Service Experience with Alcatraz City Cruises I'm writing this review to share my experience with the company's customer service, specifically around their cancellation policy. We were excited to book a trip through Alcatraz City Cruises on 6/16/26. Unfortunately, a family emergency forced me to cancel our trip to San Francisco, including this tour. I cancelled through the confirmation link in my email on 6/19 -- well within the 72-hour window required for a full refund, since the event itself wasn't until 6/26. The website showed my reservation as cancelled, so I stepped away to deal with the family emergency. In my rush, I never went back to check for a separate cancellation confirmation email, since the site had already shown the cancellation as complete. That was my mistake -- but it led to a frustrating outcome: I was charged for the tickets on the day of the event anyway. I didn't catch the charge until I reviewed my bank statement at the start of the following month. I called four times and couldn't reach a live person. When I finally got through to a representative, my request for a refund was denied. I asked again for the decision to be reviewed, but the agent refused, saying they would not look into it further. I understand that not confirming the cancellation via email was an oversight on my part. But the website clearly showed the reservation as cancelled, and we never used the tickets. Given that the cancellation was initiated well within the refund window, I would have expected more flexibility from customer service -- not an automatic denial. Dissapointed in this company and would not book through them again. Basically the ones who take you to Alcatraz Island and pick you up. Don't expect anything but a boat ride that is crowded with limited food and drink options on way over (must be purchased from them can't bring anything with you) and a few more options as you can drink alcohol on the way back. You can buy your tickets through them to get rides to the island and then tour the island on your own and return with them at set pick up times. read more

I didn't know much about Alcatrez so I figured it would be cool to learn more about it by doing this tour. Al Capone was also held here at one point. We did the "night tour" which wasn't really at nighttime since the sun didn't go down until around 8:30pm and we got on the boat to go there at 6:30pm. The boat promptly left from the pier at 6:30pm so make sure you are in line before then! When we got off the boat at the island, we had to walk up some hills to get up to the entrance, but they offer a lift for those with disabilities. It was an audio tour and it was easy to follow along while going through the prison. The only downside is it felt really crowded and hard to move around at times, and I kept feeling like I was in people's way. The tour was shorter than I expected. There's also a museum that explains when Native Americans lived on the island, but we didn't have time to go through it because we wanted to catch the boat and go back. If you're really interested in Alcatrez Island and learning about prisons, I'd recommend it, but if not, I don't think it's worth the price. It seems super popular though. The highlight of the entire tour was seeing all the birds on the island and the beautiful gardens throughout. The views are also great while on the boat. read more

Honestly no trip to San Francisco is complete without taking a tour of Alcatraz Island. I did it once as a 10-year-old and then I knew I had to do it again 26 years later when in San Francisco for a work conference. After doing some research, Alcatraz City Cruises seemed to be the highest rated and overall best tour company to go with. Their signage down on the piers was clear (Pier 33) and we quickly showed our tickets and were able to jump into line. It can get a bit chilly out on the Bay during the roughly 20 minute ride to the island (not to mention a bit wet with ocean spray), so bringing a jacket would be advised. After listening to the guides speak after first landing, the island is yours to tour. We opted for the audio tour, which was definitely worth it, to have the history described to you as you walked the cell block. It's a bit of a hike all the way to the top of the island to the cell house but there are little trams that can take you all the way up if needed. There's a fun gift shop and magnificent views of the city. I can say, without a doubt, that even though I've been out to Alcatraz Island twice now, I would go again, and I would book with Alcatraz City Cruises. read more

Buying tickets online was easy. Highly recommend to buy online, you can skip the line when you arrive and it's the same price. Quick ferry ride to the island, about 15 mins. Food, drinks, and bathroom was available on the boat. Be prepared for a lot of flies. They give out fans, recommend to grab one purely for the flies. The audio tour was great. You have to walk up a long hill to the top, however they offer rides for older people or people you can manage the walk up. Ferries leave every half hour so you have plenty of time to explore. The staff were all friendly. There is a gift shop on the island, it had cool stuff if you're looking for that. By the end of the ferry ride home we were really sick of the flies. We took Alcatraz City Cruises from Pier 33 to Alcatraz Island. The boat ride cost $15 per person, the prison was closed so no tour were offered on this date. The International Indian Treaty Council hosted the Indigenous Sunrise service on Thanksgiving. The lines were long from Pier 33, but the staff moved things along quickly and got large groups of people on board quickly. The boat ride to the island was short and smooth. The sunrise service was a powerful experience and I'm grateful to have shared the experience with all those who were in attendance. Alcatraz Island hosts Indigenous Ceremonies annually on Indigenous People's day and Thanksgiving. It was a powerful celebration of the long history and ongoing resistance against occupation and colonization. read more

We reached sfo by 3 pm , but we had hard time finding parking , so we got late and missed our 3.20 pm ferry . We booked a cruise about a week before our arrival. We gave ourselves ample time to get there, but discovered that we got on the wrong trolley and had to grab a Lyft to get there with a couple minutes to spare. I ran down the pier with my husband in tow, who didn't seem as concerned about getting to our cruise in time. Fortunately, I made it to the pier in time and the staff was so pleasant and told me not to worry as my husband slowly made his way to the boat. It was a very nice ferry ride to Alcatraz. We were greeted by a very friendly and funny young lady, who told us what we needed to know, and then we took advantage of the cart, provided to get all the way up to Alcatraz. If you have mobility issues, you should definitely take advantage of the cart because it was much farther than I thought and it's steep going up as it winds around to the top. I was very impressed by the elder lady who drove the cart all the way up the winding hill and she managed to turn the cart around on a dime. We have never been inside a jail before, so this was an interesting experience. Certainly one that I never have any intention of experiencing again unless I'm a tourist. We took advantage of the audio tour, which was very insightful. We learned some interesting facts about the prison. The exterior of the prison has lots of lovely flowers and plants and bird life. We learned that indigenous people occupied the site at some point, a fact that I didn't know. I was disappointed that there was a separate gift shop available with items for the indigenous, but it was closed. I'm not sure if it's closed permanently or if it was just closed for that day. Once we got off it was a quick orientation then you were off to explore. It was a cool experience to see one of the most famous prisons in the world. Ticket purchase was quick and painless online. We were given the opportunity to rest in the pre-boarding area due to a personal mobility issue. The ticket takers were very professional and friendly. The ship personnel were also professional and friendly. The ship itself could use an update but was clean. Once docked after a quick 15 minute trip we were welcomed by a NPS docent who gave us a quick description of the island and specific do's and don'ts. A little electric tram was provided for those who need assistance to get to the top of the facility otherwise one has to hoof and puff to the top amongst paved switchbacks equaling 13 flights of stairs. The individual tour itself was informative but be prepared for herds of people stopping and crowding on the audio tour. Personally, I recommend not utilizing the audio portion because it's too wordy plus the info boards are more than sufficient. We did enjoy our excursion but feel it was a bit pricey for what you get and understand most of the collected monies goes toward the cruise costs. For those who collect the National Park Stamps don't forget to bring your book and/or ask the cashier for the stamp. read more

On a recent trip back to the Bay Area our family toured Alcatraz which is something that we never did when we lived here. If you are visiting SF I would recommend getting a City Pass which has an option for the Alcatraz cruise and tour among other tourist attractions. Since we were using City Pass we already had our ticket but if you are not using City Pass I would highly recommend getting your tickets in advance. The cruises depart in 30 minute intervals. I would recommend that you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time. You can take any return boat back. The trip is relatively short but you get some awesome views of the Alcatraz and the San Francisco skyline and Bay Bridge. It will be chilly and windy on the trip so a jacket would be recommended. The staff and crew were really friendly. When you return there is an area where you can view some historic items and a model of Alcatraz Island. I just left the Behind the Scenes tour at Alcatraz and it was amazing! I highly recommend splurging on the enhanced tour. What an incredible experience -- rich with history as well as compassion for those who served time here. I so appreciated that the tour guides and staff emphasized educating visitors not just on the prison itself but also around the human stories inside those walls. I loved the messaging around prioritizing rehabilitation, helping those released from incarceration acclimate, and considering their humanity in extending opportunities. I definitely want to recognize Sanford our tour guide who knocked it out of the park on his first night let lose as our lead guide! He went above and beyond to show up as energetic, engaging, funny and informative! And his partner Jeff was so sweet and truly a precious presence. I was really so impressed with all of the stuff they have working here, everyone friendly and helpful. The workshops and lectures throughout the evening were a wonderful bonus! Booked our trip online about a month out since we heard it sells out if you wait. Really glad we did because it was definitely packed when we got there. Definitely recommend booking ahead in general but especially during the summer. The loading area is off one of the piers. There's a model of Alcatraz with info about the prison that you can look at as well as a big sign you can take a photo with. Boarding was relatively painless. You board by your designated time. The interior of the boat has plenty of seating with large windows but you can also stand aft or forward and I think there was upperdeck seating as well. They have a small food and drink stand inside the ship. I brought some food but I was glad for the sandwiches they had available too. I ended up really needing one after my experience at Alcatraz. Boat trip was relatively quick, like 15 minutes. But it's just enough time to enjoy the sea and take some photos. The approach to Alcatraz is really impressive! read more

Upon our arrival, we were met with an unwelcoming and dismissive attitude from April, the manager of Alcatraz City Cruises. Despite our efforts to explain our situation which led to us being 5 mins late, she was highly rude, lacked professionalism, and demonstrated poor customer service skills. She appeared unwilling to listen or offer any form of assistance beyond issuing a refund. While a refund was appreciated, we were not offered an alternative tour option, which would have been a reasonable and customer-centered solution. I want to note that I have a spine disability, which limits my ability to walk quickly or stand for long periods. This condition caused us to be a 5 minutes late for check-in, despite our best efforts to arrive on time. Importantly, the STANDBY LINE HAD NOT BOARDED YET-meaning we could have reasonably been accommodated without disruption to operations OR been given an option to join the next tour leaving in 20 mins. Instead, we were treated dismissively and left feeling discriminated against and embarrassed in front of others. I hope this matter will be reviewed seriously, as the experience did not reflect the values or level of service expected from such a reputable tour. read more

Took this service to get to the island of Alcatraz, and it was pretty good. Getting on the boat was easy (we easily ordered our tickets online and just scanned them to get on), and the boat left on time. We also didn't bother waiting around in line to get on the boat, which made things easy. We loved that we were able to go to the rooftop seating on the boat and see all the sites of the Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the island itself. They have refreshments and such located on the boat. I didn't want to splurge, so I didn't, but it was nice to know that if I needed water, that it was available. We got lucky and went at a time where there weren't that many people headed to the island, so there was plenty of seating for us. And same with the way back - despite the line looking like it was a lot of people, we had an easy time getting back. I do think there's a safety hazard with the flies around and I know some of that can't be controlled, but it was a bit much that everyone was swatting persistently. There are snacks on the boat that can be a bit pricey, I would recommend bringing stuff onto the boat since it'll be a long time before you can eat another snack. The island is a habitat now for seabirds, and the gardens are still stunning. I had been there a decade ago, and during the day your you used to tour the hospital wing. I have been to Alcatraz many times but we recently made a trip for someone that we know who had never been. I felt like Alcatraz City Cruises was super convenient to use and did a very good job. The boat was clean and there was plenty of seating, and, although it was very expensive, we were able to grab a hot dog and some waters before landing on the island. It was also easy to just walk up and buy our tickets and use the restroom and get in line for the cruise. There are announcements before you get on and while you are cruising which I think is probably helpful to a lot of people. I appreciate the good communication. I had to watch their staff deal with a ridiculous woman who apparently left her cell phone on the island with a friend on our return trip. She was hysterical and wanted them to turn the whole ferry around so that she could go and get her phone. I thought the stuff was very professional and stayed calm, especially considering how she was behaving. If they could bring their food and beverage prices down to a reasonable price point, I think they would probably be worthy of five stars. read more

This tour was a bucket list item for me. After reading a lot of reviews, we decided To go with the night tour since I had been wanting to do a haunted SF tour but time didn't allow for it. Alcatraz at night was eerie but not scary. It's extremely well lit up. Outside on the grounds is pretty spooky. What made the might tour worth it to me, was the amazing views of the city and golden gate all lit up at night. So great. I wish we'd have done the day tour because you have a lot more time to explore the grounds and I think there are more "trails" you can explore than you can during the day. (We saw people walking closer to the water than we were able to) overall, the tour was great, super informative and interesting with amazing views of the city. Well worth the money read more

Awesome experience, $55 for a beautiful boat ride through the SF bay to "the most famous island in the world!" My wife and I had a lovely time doing this. If you have any interest in history or just would like a lovely boat ride, Alcatraz is a great experience. Be advised that you will want to book at least a week in advance to ensure you get tickets as this is extremely popular and can often sell out. The main thing I want to say is GO IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE. Alcatraz's buildings are deteriorating so fast I would be surprised if it's still there in 5-10 years. A lot of the facility is now unable to be visited or actively crumbling. I visited here when I was a kid and the deterioration is alarming. But this deterioration is why Alcatraz was closed in the first place. But still, to be able to visit the cell house and the exercise yard is an extremely vivid experience. Be advised there's a lot of walking and walking up hill but it's totally worth it. And the views from the island are spectacular. We appreciated the facilities and the park rangers who were helpful with good energy. A few of the young men working on the island were working about as hard as I've ever seen running up and down the giant hill leading up to the historic prison. You can feel the love and the passion the employees and the staff here have for the island. Be advised, you will want to go early and you will want to try to get up the hill quickly because Alcatraz gets mobbed with tourists and it can be difficult getting around the cell house when it's jammed with people not paying attention listening to the audio tour. But all good, the vibe is good and people are polite. But to get the most out of your experience, you should try to go early and then maybe plan hanging out at the Wharf with the rest of your day. I am a huge history and film fanatic. To be able to visit where a lot of great Clint Eastwood films were shot and where a lot of fascinating American history took place was a peak San Francisco experience. San Francisco is one of the most beautiful and spectacular places I've ever seen. And Alcatraz is a peak experience in this historic and incredible city. read more

But there were not enough ferrys for the amount of people seeing Alcatraz on Monday, March 16th and the ferry's were late, off schedule and way overcrowded making the ferry ride miserable. The boats have a fly infestation! While the ferry ride over to Alcatraz went smoothly, both the boats we took to and from the island had fly infestations. It was disgusting. I mentioned this to one of the crew members and all he said was yeah they knew, but the fly infestation was worse on the island (not in my experience). How hard would it be for Alcatraz City Cruises to put out some fly traps overnight on their boats and at least try to mitigate or diminish the problem for its passengers? If the boat was a restaurant (and they do serve food on-board), I'm not sure they'd pass inspection by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. read more

Beware of large tour groups of grade school children because we found them to be a little pushy-shovey, and completely unaware of their rude behavior. Annoying. Back to the tour. It was fascinating to hear voices from the past. Former inmates and guards tell their stories, and describe their experiences as they direct you from one area to the next. We hung on their every word. After the audio tour, you are then able to stroll and explore other areas of the island at your leisure. At the bookstore, two authors were available to answer questions and autograph their book "The Last Escape". I don't know if somebody did it as a joke, but I did not want to go in there and find out. I just love SF weather when it is like that because it is cool but not too cold and the view is insanely beautiful. The ferry was easy and the staff was nice. Once on the island, you can choose the self-guided walking tour which we did. It is clear and easy to follow, I really liked the narration from actual guards who had worked there. Be prepared to WALK because it is uphill once you dock, and there is a lot to see on this rock. We took our time, and this place is definitely a historical part of SF that you must experience, whether tourists like us or locals like our daughter. However, the most interesting part of the tour were the cells which housed the three prisoners who backed in June of 1962, escaped. Photos of their cells depicted the holes in the walls were they escaped through was fascinating to see. Additionally, the diagram highlighting how they scaled the pipes inside the walls to reach the roof was mind-blowing. The prisoners made dummy heads out of cement and soap to resemble themselves laying in bed to avoid detection by the guards. Alcatraz Island attracts over 1.5 million visitors a year from around the world. There's a large souvenir shop filled with T-shirts, sweaters, cups and a host of other items visitors can purchase. Tickets to Alcatraz are very popular and sell out quickly. The next available dates are in August. This place is truly unforgettable. read more

SCAM - we booked a tour in February 2026 but wanted to cancel in advance, per their cancelation policy. When we tried to cancel and request a refund, their site doesn't give you the option to cancel and and asks you to call customer service, which is fully automated and asks you to go back online to cancel, so you just end up going in circles. Horrible approach to customer service - money is stuck, no refund and can't even reschedule - avoid this company!! read more

Had a great trip today visiting Alcatraz. We bought tickets online and the process was very simple and easy. It is recommended to get there 30 minutes early mostly to get parking taken care of. There's a really interesting display prior to boarding the ferry for the island and it was even better after experiencing Alcatraz. We listed to Brian for our docent tour and he had lots of great information about the island. Flies are a bit annoying. The audio tour is available in 11 languages including ASL. Going in the "hole" is something .... It was a surprise I haven't visited Alcatraz before but would definitely recommend. read more
