Buckingham is What a Nursing Home is Supposed to Be!…read more When it came time to find a nursing home for my father, I was deeply worried that my Dad's new home wouldn't be sufficiently caring, clean, comfortable or professionally operated. So, I researched well over a hundred nursing homes across Chicago and the suburbs. I am so glad that exhaustive search enabled me to find Buckingham Pavilion! Everyone was caring, understanding, patient and attentive to my Dad's needs. This was true of everyone on the team from the receptionists to the nurses, to the escorts, to the maintenance staff. I was never given any reason to worry about my Dad's level or care or comfort. During my many visits, I saw that he, and the other residents, were happy at Buckingham. Also, my Dad's room, the dining room and all the community spaces were always kept clean and the residents' room were significantly more spacious than at other homes. To top it off, one of the owners I frequently checked in with is not only caring, communicative and professional, but a person of great integrity. I could not be more thankful for everything that everyone at Buckingham did for my Dad and my family.

I had a short stay in Lakeview. This is what I experienced. The nurse practitioner took me off one…read moreof my prescribed blood pressure medications. My blood pressure became high. I told the nurse on shift I needed to be put back on the medication the nurse practitioner took me off of. I was not put back on that medication. Fortunately,I had that medication on me which lasted only two days before I was discharged. My blood pressure was high for those two days. I told the nurse on shift I have rights and that they can't tell me, because of their decision,I can't take my prescribed blood pressure medication. What the nurse practitioner needed to do was to contact my primary care physician to see if she agreed to take me off that medication. The nurse practitioner didn't do that. This was a wrong decision on the part of the nurse practitioner because my blood pressure toward the end of my stay was high. If a person stays 80 days they have robbed you blind:they have you sign paperwork that gives Lakeview the rite to automatically withdraw 90%of your SS check from your bank. The medical care,in my opinion is not worth 90% of your livelyhood. Thay should get a flat rate per diem,not 90% of your SS check. Secondly,they skimp on the food served. You get powdered eggs every day. The coffee is on the strongside. So if a patient doesn't use sugar,bitter coffee just isn't drinkable. The meat is processed:ham,pork and chicken. You will not get a real cut of red meat:beef or pork. Occasionally you will get a chicken leg. For 90% of your SS check,in my opinion,the long stay isn't worth it. My stay was for 32 days because I insisted I didn't need to stay: my oxygen levels were 95-97%. They can't hold you there if your oxygen levels are good enough to be released. They told me I had to have a residence to be released. So if one on SS wants to stay in a motel they insist on a residence. Then when I left on the 32nd day they wrote up a script for bedside assistance but I don't have to follow up on on that. Well,in my opinion,If I didn't have to follow up with bedside assistance,why write the recommendation? Does that make any sense to you? In recapping,the price for care for long term stay and the food served isn't worth 90% of your SS check! You will get physical rehabilitation for the short stay: less than 80 days. But for most elderly patients,they are stuck there for the long stay. In my opinion it's legal robbery, because of your signature which they require you to sign away 90% of your SS check for a residence there. I would advise the elderly to have their attorney write up a contract for his client stating that Lakeview only get a flat fee per diem. Why should the patient be robbed of most of his SS check? I have also read that Lakeview had a settlement against itself for $12.5 million. Now the cheap food and the paper signing away of 90% of your SS check make sense: Lakeview intends to recover their loss at the patients expense! Future residents BEWARE!

My Mother in Law was admitted for hospice two weeks ago where she passed. The staff was amazing and…read morethere was excellent communication. I do believe she was well cared for. Her bed and person seemed clean. The facility was clean but her room was not. The floor was dirty and there were items that may have been left in both the closet and refrigerator from previous residents. She had a shared room with a person who was very mentally competent. I do not know how many beds were available when she was admitted but I would not be happy if my loved on was in the same room with someone who was dying. I can not speak for the food, she was a choking hazard on hospice care. Between the staff at William Barr LP and the hospice team we signed with both my Husband and I felt this was a fine choice for her. The front door staff was welcoming. The valet parking was helpful in the congested neighborhood but I always found street parking close by.

There needs to be better communication between the nurse on duty and the certified nursing assistant on staff. On a positive note the aids on the floor are compassionate and try to help as much as possible. Patients rooms need to be cleaned daily along with cleaning the floor and emptying the garbage.

They are older, spent time in the hospital and are now here. They cannot get around themselves and we have tried to be there to help as much as possible, taking them into the general area for meals, getting them dressed. The rehab is going well but the other care has a lot to be desired. I've recently has surgery on my shoulder so I cannot help move or push a wheelchair. If I ask for help, no one has time. I stepped out for lunch hoping that that would prompt someone to take the opportunity to get them in a wheelchair and go into lunch. Nope- food tray to the room. This poor person will not be out of the bed today because no one has time and i physically can't do it. Do better... being under staffed is a country wide problem, but lack of care is not excusable. It's time for a recent review for Covenant Home of Chicago. Here goes:…read more When my father decided it was time to sell his apartment building and move to a supportive living situation, Covenant Home came to the fore, as it is part of Chicago Methodist Senior Services. And as Steve Z. commented, searching for an assisted living facility is indeed an education in itself and totally new territory for me. The staff at Covenant helped us navigate the ins and outs of the application process, which as you can imagine, complicated. Financial records, doctors' assessments, TB test, all in the mix. To the building: It was built in 1997, so is relatively new, well-maintained, with a caring (yes, I said that, though I realize that is often just a buzzword in reviews of these types of enterprises.) staff. The meals are tasty and well-balanced. Residents sit 4 to a table with fresh flowers, nice silverware, and always water (so no dehydration, per the reviewer from 5 years ago). (They also have a water cooler w/lemons in the foyer). On Sundays they put white linen tableclothes on the dining tables, which, together with the flowers, makes for a very nice setting. In all, there are about 54 residents, with either studio apartments or 1 bedroom. The floors are all wood and nicely maintained, fresh paint upon move-in, the better to navigate with walkers, etc. The building has Comcast cable available. Residences are equipped with small refrigerator/freezer, a microwave, sink in a little "kitchen" area. Two closets, and ample cabinets in the bathroom. The five floors are built in a square around an atrium, which gives the place a nice airy feeling. All the rooms' windows are outward facing. The bathroom has a level floored shower for safety and there are pull chains all over the place for residents to pull if in distress. There are daily activities for residents, trips to Jewel and Walgreens if you are not mobile enough to go on your own. Filling the day: Evening movies, afternoon coffee in a very cute cafe, balance class, art class, current events, Bible study, word games, bingo, ballroom dancing, tai chi, Sunday worship (Methodist), a Tuesday Mass, manicures, watercolors, culture chats (not sure what that is). An RN is on site most of the time and he or she keeps good track of dispensing medications for all residents. And, if there is a health crisis, Swedish Covenant Hospital is right across the street! This is not a memory care type of place. For that, they have Wesley Place, further east on Foster. Residents have varying ranges of mobility. My father goes to his own medical appointments (right at the corner), takes taxis or walks to close by destinations such as Lincoln Square and the Tre Kroner Restaurant. So, all in all, he was fortunate to secure a studio here. And since I live in Oakland, CA, it's important to feel that he is safe and in good hands. Covenant Home provides that security and care.

My search for an assisted living facility was an education in itself- long story short I decided on…read morethe Covenant Home based on it being close to my own home, and on my gut feeling about the people I spoke with, the director and the assistant director of the facility. It's been a year and four months, and I am happy to say the result has been better than I expected. My mom moved into the Covenant Home in September of 2012. She was 90 at that time, and had been living at the North Shore Retirement Hotel in Evanston. During her 6 years at the North Shore she progressed from being fairly self-sufficient to needing help with some of her daily care, and she had more and more difficulty dealing with things in general, as her memory was getting worse. During her last year at North Shore she was hospitalized twice, she had poor appetite, was losing weight and she was depressed. She also had a couple physical conditions that required some daily attention. We had hired a helper for her and also contracted with the on site home nursing company at the North Shore, but their services were not enough. After she moved into the Covenant Home her appetite began to improve, and it's no longer an issue at all. The chronic problems she was having previously are under control, she is consistently in good spirits, and she has made friends there. Although she was not happy to make this move, she is now quite happy there, and says so. This is a much better outcome than I anticipated and I believe it is due the competency of the staff, the fact the quality of her care is consistent, and an intangible aspect: that the culture there is one of attentive kindness. The care she gets at the Covenant Home is a mix of residential and medical- they take care of making sure she gets her meds, cleaning of her studio apartment, dressing, dining, getting ready for bed, all that. Additionally, they they keep up with any ongoing medical care she needs, they make doctor appointments, and if necessary provide transportation. The place reeks of urine had blood stains on the floor. The residents include mental patients who can walk around on different floors. The windows in the room are filthy the bed is from the 1930s you have to roll it up with a lever. My mom had a medical condition while there that was ignored I visited that day and informed the nurse she was annoyed and said the ambulance would take 90 minutes. note we visited my mom daily because she mattered. Her decline was due to this place. I filed a complaint nothing happened. do not let your love one go here.
