Being a lover of sweet wine, this winery fell short for me. Everything was on the dryer side aside from the Cayuga White which we purchased a bottle of. The owner was and older gentleman, very friendly and wasn't afraid to smile, which you don't see much of anymore. He took his time pouring and explaining each variety. The vineyard itself lacked luster, but I think he is just more into making the wine vs decoraring a tasting room! But I will say I liked that he had colores Christmas lights strung all along the ceiling! Put me in the Holiday Spirit. If you are into dry wines, this could be the place for you. My wife and I were looking forward to enjoying a glass of wine yesterday, so we stopped by Brimstone Hill. We asked for two glasses of white. Unfortunately, the older gentleman pulled out two very small (5oz.?) stem glasses. Then he poured an incredibly meager portion. Half a glass! At best 2.5- 3 ounces of wine for about $14.00 each. My wife pointed out the stingy pour and the gentleman insisted his pour was standard. How cheap! We walked out. read more

I really wanted to love this little winery; you can tell that the owner is very hands on and works very hard. Rarely have I ever seen the owner do the tastings as well as all the other aspects of the winemaking process. Richard, the owner, is extremely nice and very knowledgeable. It is certainly worth the trip just to meet him. They offer a variety of reds and whites, mostly on the dry side, but some sweet as well. The wines are certainly good, as we did take home a bottle of the Cayuga, but most of them don't really stand out much at all. The tasting room itself could use a bit of an update as well. Wood paneling from the 70's, and s propane tank heater keeping it all warm. Since this appears to be an office space above a garage I question the safety of the heater... it was certainly a unique winery, and I do wish the owner the best of luck, but sadly I doubt that I would return. read more

I have been in love with this boutique winery for over 30 years, When I first visited them while on a weekend at the Mohonk Mountain House Iwas immediately impressed by the quality of the wine. My favorite has always been the Cabernet Franc. One of their white wines was selected to be served to the President of France at a White House state dinner. read more

Stopped into Brimstone Hill Vineyard & Winery on Sunday afternoon. A less than helpful Tasting was saved only by high quality wines. It would greatly benefit them to bring in some folks to shore up the customer experience. Quality: Of the wineries we visited on our recent Upstate trip, Brimstone Hill Vineyard & Winery definitely had the best wine. We ended up taking two bottles home with us. However, the experience itself was a disaster. During a short Tasting we tried the Seyval Blanc, Vin Rouge, Cabernet Franc, Marechal Foch, and Riesling. The Marechal Foch was my favorite, while my girlfriend was a big fan of the Seyval Blanc. And while the rest of the wines we tried were solid, we actually requested to try two different ones, which our server decided against because we would like others more. In fact the Cabernet Franc, which was served was probably our least favorite of the bunch. It was also not the easiest to decide what we liked because we could barely finish one wine before the next was poured. I am certainly not sophisticated enough of a wine drinker to just immediately know, I need some time to absorb and think. Quantity: Small pours, but enough to get a sense of the wine. Unfortunately, they did not give much time to actually determine how you feel about it. Value: $5 for a Tasting of 5-6 wines. Ambiance: Brimstone Hill Vineyard & Winery is located in Pine Bush, New York. If not for the grapes outside, you would be sure you ended up in the wrong spot. They have spent very little effort on the actual look of the tasting room, which is a beat-down house with a garage on the ground floor. The inside looks exactly as you would expect, a 70s designed house with a few walls knocked out. Wood paneling on the walls and damaged laminated tile on the floor, complete the look. Definitely not a place designed to hang out for any extended period of time, which is a shame because of the wine quality would seem to encourage you having a glass. Crowd: They are a small space, but had a good flow of people moving through. Most grabbing wine to-go, and not doing Tastings. Service: While they are knowledgable about wine, they are extremely awkward with people. When a few people arrived simultaneously, they had no idea what to do, so made one couple wait while the others went through the Tasting. There was no reason we all could have done it together, but separated. Because of the waiting couple, the gentlemen assisting us started to rush us through, trying to pour a wine before we finished the last one. We also needed to frequently ask what wine he was pouring, as he would give descriptions, but no type. And we specifically asked to try certain wines, which was unilaterally vetoed, and met with we would like a different one better. I Love Bill Z.'s review: Brimstone Hill isn't about being a place you spend an entire afternoon at, it's about a family interested in wine. Originally from MD ( go MD!) the wine makers are there to pour you wine and fill you with winery information as you drink! The atmosphere isn't that of a big winery tasting room to hang out, but it's a quaint place to learn and experience Brimstone Wine intimately. They also have adorable older wine swag, it's like a wonderful time machine into classic tastings. They have ample area information around as well for you to stay in touch with NY Wineries, events, local attractions, etc Checking in with our wine pass (normally $5 for 5 wines), on their pre-set tasting we tried: -Chardonnay: very buttery -Seyval Blanc: well done, crisp, not overpowery -Marchal Foch: light on the in-take, bold on the aftertaste -Vin Rouge:not the best blend -Cayuga White: crisp, not overly sweet flavor -Sweet Riesling: I just don't care for sweet rieslings Bottles are reasonably priced (ranging from $15+), which led to us going home with two : ) read more

The place is in need of a serious upgrade. Not well kept. I seriously question whether any grapes are grown there or whether any wine is even manufactured there. The grape vines are overgrown with weeds. The owner was lethargic and looked totally bored. I purchased a bottle of Chardonnay which was drinkable but definitely not an award winning wine. The 2016 vin rouge was absolutely terrible and even mixing it with other wines to try to make it drinkable did not help. I guess I will use it for cooking. Came here on a whim after a bad experience at a nearby vineyard and so glad we did. Family owned winery with small homey feel. All wines are award winning and for good reason! The owner was so kind and knowledgeable. A great place to stop in for a bottle (or a case!) or to try something new! We will definitely be back! read more

Isn't it interesting that when you go to a brewery, and they say, "It's all about the beer," everyone gets excited, but when you go to a winery and say, "It's all about the wine," some folks will say, "Oh, how unexciting." Brimstone Hill isn't about being a place you spend an entire afternoon lounging, dining, sipping, listening to live music, etc.. It's about visiting a decades-old winery by a family who are interested in wine. And that does show by the older decor in their tasting room. But the tastings are inexpensive compared to other local wineries, and the wines are a good deal too. My palate didn't always agree with the write-ups of some of the wines. For example, I thought some of the semi-sweet white wines were sweeter than ones billed as sweet. I enjoyed the rose, though some of the reds - quite authentic - were too smoky for me. But it didn't stop me from enjoying the tastings, the wines, buying some, or wanting to return in the future. read more

This is an incredible winery. They make wine. That's what they do. They don't spend their profits on sizable tasting rooms, or live entertainment, or anything else. They spend it on the wine making. You'll be able to tell once you do your first tasting. I'm not trying to knock the other larger wineries in the area, but this is clearly a project of passion for the owner. He speaks fondly of his late wife, who was French (you'll see the French influence in the wines) and her family's coat of arms is what you'll find on the bottle of their sparkling wine. My girlfriend loves dry wines, and of the area Brimstone has the best drys. I like the noiret, which was dry and very peppery, and my girlfriend was a fan of their red blend (which the name escapes me..). We also bought a bottle of their Seyval Blanc. The owner was who provided the tasting for us, and thankfully didn't have a problem with us coming in 15 min before closing. tl;dr - Owner is nice. Wine is all they do - no show, just wine. I came here for the first time years ago. It's run by a friendly little old couple who clearly have a great passion for the wine they produce. They have aged in the last few years - so they are not as quick as they used to be. That said - this winery makes the best wine of almost the possibly 100+ wineries I have been to throughout the country. They are no-frills because they do not make a spectacle of the winery experience. Here - it's all about the wine. I was there, again, this weekend and they had a new cash register gal who could not figure out her arse from her elbow. She kept messing up the machine and the orders. And when she poured the tastings, her passion was as flat as a pancake. I see they want to get someone younger to help out, but it would help if the person seemed more interested in the wine they are serving. Otherwise - the wine here is incredible - so long as you are not expecting the pomp- and-circumstance of other wineries. read more

Last September we rented a farm house and visited 6 local wineries for my good friend's bachelorette party. This was the first place we went to. It's true, the tasting room is not much to look at but this place had, hands down, the best wine from what we tried in the area. At the end of the trip we all regretted not purchasing more bottles from this place. But we were holding back since we had so many to see! The owner poured for our tasting and I found his descriptions very enticing and added to my appreciation. I ended up buying 4 bottles of white wines (2 Vidal Blanc, 2 Domaine Bourmont Sparkling) even though I'm a reds drinker. I'm having more shipped to me now and it reminded me to write this review. Don't go here for the ambiance, go for the small batch quality and taste! I love this diamond in the rough. If you don't like their room, easy, just close your eyes. read more

I would be happy to rate this winery based on the wine, but we never got that far. Stopped in to try a tasting, but although the 2 gentlemen behind the counter were at the time pouring for 2 other groups (family of 4, and a couple), they never bothered to speak with us. The tasting area is very small, so a polite welcome and some communication to the effect of " we'll be able to serve you in a minute", would have been understood, but to just let us stand around in silence was not acceptable. The place is fairly run down, so there is nothing of interest to see while waiting. After 10 minutes of being ignored, we left. read more

I was excited to try this winery when I had read that they dedicate themselves to producing wines in old world styles. I was very impressed. True, the tasting room will not be featured in a photo spread in Architectural Digest. This is just fine with me. My focus is on trying quality wines. The proprietor talked us through the process of each wine we tried and really took the time to explain and engage. The values are really incredible and speak to an owner who cares more about producing quality wine at reasonable prices than maximizing profits. A lot of wineries seem to be taking advantage of the current COVID rules by foisting overpriced snacks on everyone. That's not happening here. We came away with a great talk and tasting experience and three bottles of wine. I will definitely be back. read more

We went here for our friends birthday and it was incredibly dirty and cold. The girl behind the counter was bundled up and her hair was a mess and looked like she hadn't showered in days. The bathroom had no toilet paper and when I asked she had no clue where any was and there was what looked like dried blood on the garage. There was caution tape on the stairs too. The owner, Richard, is not only charming but an expert vintner with a true passion for the wine he produces. Brimstone's Vidal Blanc and Reisling are suburb examples of his craft. His other whites are quite inventive and delightful. I have not sampled his reds as yet as I've never been a big fan of New York reds, but plan on doing so when I return to the vineyard later today.
