Wines were unpalatable, had to dump and service was antagonistic and rude. No appreciation for paying customers.

The estate is quite pretty, with a very large, clean, and well maintained central tasting room and distillery. There is an incredible amount of liquor to taste, with a particular specialty of traditionally distilled absinthe (award winning; highly recommend). The host was very helpful and knowledgeable about all aspects of the distillation process. We left feeling like we received a free history lesson. We were also given a quick tour of the facility, which was very kind. We spent a little over an hour on location, but we easily could have spent longer. Prices were reasonable, both for the tastings and the bottles. There were multiple sized bottles, and a huge range of options. Both of the owners were very kind, patient, and accommodating of an exchange after the fact. We did not sample the wine, but will next time. Outside there are seats and tables, with shade, for tastings, as well as some picnic tables down by the lake. We came in early June, so it wasn't too hot. Came to this winery as a surprise treat from my hubby for our anniversary. Of course we know things are different and we try to stay as safe as possible and Stoutridge made this possible. Steve did a BOMB job on his educational wine tasting. We really felt like we left with more than a bottle of wine and great flavors. The experience was truly enriching and pretty cool to know more about this winery. This guy is a genius of a chemist and does it ALL. All wines are unaltered and as raw as it gets. Pretty cool and you can only buy these HERE. Even more exclusive. My favorite part is being able to do the tasting with open ventilation and with a proper social distance. Also the best part is the outside area with a beautiful little lake and gorgeous views. There are picnic tables and plenty of green grass where you can pack a picnic and have a little picnic date. Truly such an amazing and relaxing day out here. It's even cooler to know that these guys also offer their distillery menu and tastings as well. Something cool to come back to next time! What an incredible find for me as I settle into the neighborhood. Natural wines and expert made spirits. Did a wine tasting, refined and complex notes throughout. The owners (Steve and Kin) were extremely generous In their explanations of spirits, from the vino to their amaros, fernets, mastiha and bitters that I tasted. The tour of how the magic is made was educational and super interesting. Can't wait to get back and try the absinthe and other spirits, as well as share this gem with others that will appreciate a place as Stoutridge. Why travel great distances when you can have amazing distilled spirits of great variety and delicious natural wine, right here in the Hudson Valley. read more

What is fascinating about this winery is the passion from the owners and the view-(sadly not the wine) The wine owner, Steve, displays clear passion in his work. The wine tastings are laid out in flight times, where we checked in with our passports (normally $8 for 5) and stepped up to the bar to wait for the next flight. We lucked out with no wait, the people behind us...not so lucky-you can get stuck waiting awhile beware! The flight is a pre-set tasting, that begins with a Hudson Valley Wine History lesson, in which the owner discussed the scientific background of crafting wine, highlighting the craft of his winery...."what you are about to taste is non-chemically produced wine, from a biochemist". You can't get a tasting without the long speeches. They felt a bit pushy, excessive, and super preachy, but they were still a bit interesting. It was almost like he was giving me a guilt trip for the wines I do drink that are chemically produced. On the pre-set flight we tasted: -Heritage White: crisp, but needed to be chilled longer -Ridge White: a sweet green grape puree -Cab Franc Rose: I very much dislike Rose but he wouldn't let me substitute-this was very earthy -Merlot: smooth, light tannins, plain -Ridge Red: fizzyness with pepper finish It also felt contradictory since the place is so large and flashy, I think I would have embraced the message more if it were a homier winery feel. So you're non chemically produced wine but you are a commercial profiteering get in get out winery. For example: we tried to learn more by asking questions about wine creation, the labels, and the concept, but we were given quick short answers. The customer service side needs work. read more

Per COVID your flight sample comes in a box in condiment containers with a vending machine snack. I would not try any of the ones from my flight past the sample. We tried a bottle of Merlot while we sat at one of the benches enjoying the view but the fig newtons and the nuts wasn't enough to keep us longer. I was so impressed with my visit at Stoutridge today! My boyfriend and I went for a guided tasting and we learned so much about wine! Steve really was so informative and dynamic! The wine was also delicious! I even told him I don't usually like red wine but theirs was so good I had no problem drinking it! Loved it so much I purchased some wine to take home. We went to 2 other vineyards this day and Stoutridge was definitely our favorite tasting! Such a great concept, highly recommend the guided tasting!!!! (Just an FYI though, service out at the winery was terrible and we had a really hard time getting an Uber because of the lack of service, we ended up just walking up to the main road so it was fine. This is a special place. We have been to many distilleries and this one stands out for many reasons. The differing types of spirits are impressive, from the typical ones you expect from a distillery, to the very unique takes and the completely new inventive offerings. But its the quality of each that makes Stoutridge stand out. You cannot taste everything on offer in one viist, probably not even 2. We went when they were just opening for the day and got to spend time with the owner. It was nice to hear his inspiration for what he is obviously passionate about. "Only winery in the United States that doesn't chemically produce wine because we are biochemists." We heard that phrase plenty while we were here. When we first entered, I was put off by the guy almost shooing us down the hall to the "self guided" tour. We wandered around in the room with all the wine barrels then made our way back to the tasting area so we could order wine. I then understood why he was so dismissive when we first arrived- he was waiting for more people to come before he started the tasting. Thing was, we wanted to be adventurous and planned on ordering a glass each right away. Once we said this, he then shooed the other couple down the hall to the self guided tour. I guess he only wants to do the tasting once he has a group there to listen to his spiel. He was reluctant to pour us a glass without us doing the tasting first because he was concerned we wouldn't know what we like. When we said which ones we wanted, he warned us they may not taste as we expect since they are the only U.S winery that doesn't use chemical processing. He explained why they can't distribute their wines (no chemicals), the chemical processing that takes place with other wines, what they do differently, and how both him and his wife are biochemists and he has a wine degree. Listen, we get it and it's totally cool, but his approach is a little off putting. I know that's not intentional, but the place doesn't feel warm and inviting. Personally that's how I want any winery or brewery I enter to feel. The owner dude comes across as preachy and the wife didn't say much except to smile and say hi. Once we ordered our glasses, we were then told we couldn't drink them in the tasting room or anywhere inside! We had to go outside to drink our glass of wine. We had been to many other wineries in the area and never heard of this before. The guy told us it's the law. M was able to order and drink a glass of wine everywhere else we had been to, so it must be how their place is set up for whatever reason. We stood outside because it was winter and none of the tables and chairs were set up for use. The wine was actually very good. I had the Gravitas and really enjoyed it. M tried a red blend and liked his as well. I think this place is going to be misunderstood until they can figure out a better approach with customers and find a way to make their space feel more inviting. I wish this interesting duo success and would return because I appreciate what they are doing with wine and I enjoyed my glass. read more

Stop no. 2 Located in the quaint town of Marlboro, NY of Hudson Valley countryside where my good close friends for party of three continue our weekend winery adventure. Stoutridge Vineyard is clean, spacious and mammoth grounds. I like the wine barrels as you wander through the indoor grounds. Our party of three have never experience wine as Stoutridge has cultivated uniquely for an acquired taste and body. The phenomenon of unprocessed, unfiltered, unaltered chemicals, no additives, sustainable wine using Hungarian oak barrels certainly doesn't entice me. I find their wine indifferent. Wine tastings are available on site for $8 which includes a Stoutridge wine glass conducted by owner, Steve. I like how the tasting price includes the glass which comes in a box to prevent breakage during travel. The $8 tasting fee with the glass is a good marketing concept. He and his wife, co-owner Kim are both bio-chemists degrees. I like the tasting card with their detailed description and price per bottle, but sadly the tastings cards is not for distribution, unlike standard wineries, where customers can take notes using mini golf pencils. Stoutridge tasting card is affixed to a acrylic display stand. He conducts tastings mostly bloviate as a college lecture hall reminiscing my former college days which fends a very impersonal and stolid experience. Without dispute Steve is knowledgeable and informative, but remotely far of humble, warming inviting or customer friendly personable. He fends a very condescending and hubris tone. In addition to being a bio-chemist, Steve, is an amateur artist whose work is displayed affixed behind the bar counter. The company logo of a red puddle splash does not resemble or signify anything wine as it is far remote. There is a step and repeat banner where customers can snap photos and endless selfies to feel like a celebrity to be publicly posted in the cyberspace world. Business card and flyers are abundantly available for grabs. There are other merchandise available for purchase are t-shirts advertising Stoutridge Vineyard & Distillery. The landscape and outdoor grounds are beautiful scenic and phlegmatic disposition with ponds and willow trees. If you're fortunate enough to arrive right after opening on a Friday, this is a Friday - Sunday tasting room, you may also be fortunate enough to have owner Steve Osborn doing the pouring at the tasting bar. While he does that he will also provide a tutorial on the complexities and benefits of making wine unprocessed - unfined and unfiltered - as he does at Stoutridge. It's a great, informal lecture - Steve has a degree oenology and another in food chemistry - and one of the many fun things about this winery. Those fun things include the owner himself, the lovely setting with a view deck offering tables and chairs and spacious lawn with picnic tables, the beautiful tasting room and the green built facility, including gravity fed technology. (See photos.) But from our visit we'd have to say we don't necessarily include the wines themselves among the highlights of the visit here. Still, we enjoyed both the crisp, dry Hudson Heritage White (about $16 / bottle as I recall) and the unusual Merlot (about $28 / bottle) to buy a couple of each of them. (The Merlot is from Long Island grapes and it is unlike any other of the varietal we've had.) This is a young winery (first vintage 2006) and the winemaker is passionate about creating good unprocessed wines, so it may be that the wines will continue to grow or it may be that this is just not our "thing" among wines. While the winery is young for this incarnation, another of the fun things about it is also that like much else in the Hudson River Valley it is steeped in history. The first vines were planted here in the 1700's. The first winery was opened in 1902 but closed due to prohibition. At which time there was some bootleg distilling done on the property until the 1950's. And now, with a winery reopened here, the owners are also planning a distillery operation. (Actually they hoped to open it in 2009 but the demand for their wines has slowed down their time to work on the distillery.) How's that for a cool historical evolution for the site. read more

Wow! This is the best wine and winery ever. It is run by two chemists from Cornell, Steve and Kim, with no other staff. They opened in 2006 and only create natural wines with no additives or chemicals at all. Steve spent over 1hr doing a wine tasting and explaining the chemistry and science behind his process. Their wines takes 5 years to make and have a much longer shelflife than commercial wines due to their lack of additives and preservatives (sounds contradictory, right? We'll have Steve explain why those chemicals are there and it will make sense). We learned that they don't even filter or use pumps when making the wines so they taste like the old fashioned wines. I was blown away by the multitude of flavors in my mouth. You really have to try them. You will not be disappointed. read more

I came for a quick glass of wine, but what I got was a Hudson Valley history lesson courtesy of Steve the owner. When you get to meet someone who takes real pride in their craft, you know you're in for an amazing experience. Steve and his co-owner, Kim, are both chemists, and they bring their science background to their spirits. We got to sample a vodka that was distilled 36-times, a major point of pride. Buyer beware!! The wine tasting was fun although he did mentioned that he was a biochemist and only producer of natural wine in North America quite a few times. During the tasting his wife gave us the stink eye over and over. But really we're here for the wine so none of this would matter if the wine was good. During the tasting we enjoyed a couple wines and remember one having a distinct smell of excrement.... but regardless he was a great salesman and we enjoyed a couple of them. We ended up buying six bottles of wine. He told us they have a very long shelf life and there's no need to store in the fridge. A couple months ago I brought a bottle to a friend's housewarming party. I was so embarrassed. After talking this place up I opened the wine only to find half the cork had dissolved into the bottle of what could only be described as vinegar. Go for a tasting the place is beautiful but whatever you do, don't purchase a bottle. It is garbage. read more

How this place doesn't have one star blows my mind. The two people who own this winery are modern day snake oil salesmen. They knowingly sell fraudulent goods and are frauds themselves. First, their ludicrous claim that they are the ONLY producers of natural wine. This is categorically false. There are dozens if not hundreds of natural wine producers. There are even stores that only sell natural wine. Second, most of the wine is absolutely disgusting. The white was the only decent one, so we bought a few. When we drank it at home it tasted nothing like what it did at the tasting. No exaggeration, the white smelled like vomit after opening it. He claims a long shelf life, but at the same time tells some completely insane story about how he doesn't distribute his wine because "trucks get to over 100F during shipping." Well maybe that's true in the summer, but that doesn't explain why other natural wine producers distribute their wine without issue. More importantly, it doesn't explain why the wine that I bought directly from him didn't survive in my wine fridge. In summary, this "winery" is a joke, and it isn't a funny one. read more

When you first drive up on the property you are greeted with beautiful fields and a nice size pond. Upon going in further you arrive at a beautiful building which is the winery. We went here for a party upstairs but did venture downstairs to check things out. They had a nice selection of red and white wines along with other spirits (vodka and whiskey) Walked out with a small bottle of vodka and a small bottle of whiskey. Tasted both before purchasing which was great. Just bring your wallet. $92 for the 2 bottles. That's just a disclaimer, I always try to SUPPORT small businesses. I visited the Stoutridge Vineyard and Distillery as part of a wine tour. It was our first location on the tour. Luckily there was good weather that day because we were set up at a picnic table by a beautiful lake. The main building was open for those that needed to use the bathroom or make additional purchases of wine or spirits; which was a bit of a walk away from our seating area. The wine we were tasting was set up on our picnic table along with a lamented paper that itemized the different wines we were tasting that day. Our glasses were in a cute box and we were all issued literal samples of the wine. It looked like it was probably about 1oz. servings. The wine was placed in those small plastic solo containers that the restaurants usually put dipping sauces into. It was definitely the smallest serving I was ever given at a tasting. However, the wine offered just didn't mesh well with my palette. Our tour guide informed us that the wine provided was organic so it had few sulfites and whatever fruits and additional ingredients used were organic as well. Well that day I realized that organic wine just isn't for me. The wine at times was either too tart or extremely dry. It is definitely and acquired taste. Some of the people I was with thought some of their selections were enjoyable. I basically had to water down some of my servings just to make it bearable. However, it was a lovely day, good weather, great scenery - I simply made the most of the moment. This place is very architecturally impressive to the eye, laid out well, and out to compete with other bigger wineries in the area such as Brotherhood. Inside is clean, spacious, informative. I really liked the large cask display in the back. Beyond that, this really isn't my type of winery. It's not a bad winery at all, just not one one I'd visit as frequently. What it has in largesse and pretense, it lacks, IMO, in charm. The long tasting bar had one guy essentially with a loud voice and/or megaphone talking about the wines. I felt like I was in a lecture hall. The wines were laid out almost in a bulk-style on the opposite side of the room as the tastings. For as fancy a place as this is, very few of the wines impressed me as distinct compared to other local wineries, a good number of them are blends, and many of them are unfiltered. Their prices are slightly higher than average compared to even the smaller wineries. Stoutridge is definitely a good winery to include in the Shawangunk wine trail. It's not high on my favorites list, but you should definitely give the winery a visit and determine for yourself if it's one you'll want to visit frequently. read more

We stumbled across this vineyard last weekend when we had some time to kill in the Highland area. When we first pulled up to the parking area we were struck by two things. One, this was a cell service dead zone (T-mobile, smh) and two, the space was gorgeous. There is a very still lake, complete with grassy banks, a willow tree or two, and a hornets nest (true story). We kept walking and entered the building/tasting room. The building itself has two patios, huge, with lots of seating for enjoying the view (or your wine) We were greeted by the owner and his wife, who informed us that there was a self-guided tour of the winery, and then a tasting available for $8/pp (for 5 wines, including the glass as a souvenir). We took the self guided tour, which was very informative. This winery is very eco-friendly. The cellar is underground so as to not use electricity to maintain the temperature, they do not filter their wines, do not use sulfates, and gravity is used as the energy to move the grapes into wine along the process. Very cool. The owner gave us a very informative tasting experience. We were told he and his wife were both biochemists and therefore very interested in the chemistry of wine making. He told us a bit about his particular wine making process, and what was unique about his wines. The wines we tasted did indeed have some unique aspects (for instance there was the white wine whose name I forgot which was very heavy and actually savory, the first savory white I've ever tasted). All in all a good experience, and worth a visit if you're on the Shawangunk wine trail. PS. There is wifi, ask them for the pw, so you can navigate your way back out even without cell service. read more

I'm honestly surprised that this winery doesn't have 5 stars. I read through some of the bad reviews and saw a theme of 1) wait time / customer service and 2) wine taste So here is my take on those bad reviews. I've been to this winery maybe 5 times now, and every time someone comes to visit me I say "you HAVE TO TRY THIS PLACE" and each one of my friends and relatives have been blown away by this wine. 1) wait time / customer service - it's a husband and wife team, who handle everything. If you're impatient, you might be offended with the wait time if there's other patrons in there. So yes, there MAY be a wait if there's a group in front of you. The owner goes through the process of his wines and explains them - so if you walk in & he's halfway through, you're simply asked to wait until he starts the next tasting (maybe lasts 10-15 min) again, it's two people running the whole show, if you have no patience or common courtesy, you'll find this offensive. As for the customer service, I've never had an issue. Both the husband and wife have been straight forward, funny & pleasant every time I've visited. 2) wine taste - if you think boxed wine loaded with sugar & chemicals is the best thing out there, then I would probably steer clear. If you have a more open mind then you'll find this place awesome. Yes, some of the wines smell earthy & have a different taste than expected, but that's because there are no chemicals to influence the natural taste of the grapes. I love that this is how wine was made years ago, it makes me want to don a Victorian dress and sip these wines on a velvet chaise (can you tell I watch too many British period dramas?) Like many of the other reviews, I sided on the lower side, as I didn't appreciate the wines. I found the owners hospitable, and certainly knowledgeable about their products. The information conveyed was detailed, but at the same time, came off as less passionate about the products, and more focused on the "scientific" approach. Mediocre wine. The woman/owner here is beyond rude and needs to showcase better customer service around her business. I visited today, and went for a tasting, with hopes after to buy a few bottles (or case) of wine for my MDW party. Her husband providing the tasting, is living on a high horse thinking he has bioengineered the best wine in the northeast. Bragging away. He's a biochemist people!!...As he reminded everyone 10 times during the tasting. He didn't really get into the deeper reds, which is more my preference. When asked if they could extend some of the red tastings (even was willing to pay for it, just to get a sampling before I buy the bottles I liked) she goes.. "not today"... Ok then, how the heck am I supposed to know the red I want to buy? There's a way to say things. Someone there needs to "engineer" a better customer service dynamic. In short, the wine is just ok, nothing to rave about. At least for what I was "allowed to try." I'm not just saying the wine was mediocre because I got a rude experience.... it is! They try to reel you in with this "we're the only winery to make this natural wine... bla bla" This is how they do it in Sicily bla bla bla. Pass on this place. I've just read some of reviews of Stoutridge and my wife and I along with another couple visited yesterday and bought some wine. But the comments on the biochemistry and wine degrees are still in play. It's very cool but unnecessary to hear more than once. We mentioned the grounds and how it would be a nice place for a wedding to which the female owner said "anything can be done for a price". Rude indeed The biochemists should stay behind the scenes and have someone with people skills be the face of the business. With so many wineries in the area you have to set yourself apart, but this ain't the way. read more

First visit and I honestly can say their wine options for wine tasting are amazing. Their wine is not processed which is a plus and you can really taste the natural rich flavor. The best part is you can buy the wine you like and sit outside and enjoy such a beautiful scenery! THIS IS THE SAME REVIEW I LEFT ON GOOGLE: Arrived Sunday afternoon with 15 couples to kick-off our brewery & winery tasting tour. Several people went inside check out the place, the gentleman behind the desk rudely turned us away stating we needed a reservation; insisting their website is clear about having a reservation ( I checked, site says nothing about reservations only). He then told us "we are not the clientele they are looking for"... because their product is expensive. Who says that?!?!?. Collectively we would have dropped close to $1,000. I guess money grows on the vine alongside the grapes at Stoutbridge. WISH I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS. Ownership needs to explain themselves & their employees actions. The comment made by their employee is blatantly discriminatory. He had no idea who was the bus, we were immediately judged because we arrived on a "party bus". First time we went here pre covid we loved the distillery but the woman behind the counter , I believe was the owner. She had a frown on her face and was very nasty. The man behind counter I believe is owner. He was much nicer. Very knowledgeable about his distillery and seemed to care about his products. So, when we had a group of 14 out yesterday to celebrate a retirement , which we called ahead to make sure we could sit outside , we were greeted with the same woman. Nasty as can be. Still open over an hour left and she mentioned they won't be open long to hurry and get your drinks and close out the tab. When I tell you how embarrassed I was to have brought people there to be welcomed by this extremely rude woman. I would never ever recommend this place to anyone. It's very sad because if she wasn't behind the counter greeting people this place would have gotten more stars. But I am only even giving 1 star and that is for the liquor. Sad. read more

As you approach, you will note a grandeur more similar to a Napa vineyard or one of the larger establishments on the North Fork than other vineyards in the area. The main building contains a large tasting room, empty as we entered. Soon the winemaker, Steve, appeared, directing us to a self guided tour of the barrel-house. Thereafter I set out on the tasting, $8 and it includes a sweet little glass. We began with the seyval-vidal blend, moved on to the Ridge White. Next up was the dark Rose. This was followed up by a Cabernet Franc based red, and then a more substantial Merlot. The aesthetic here is all natural. No sugar is added, the wine is not pumped. I believe they are unfiltered and are very slightly cloudy. The aim is to create wines that taste like wines from an earlier time. To my palate, the wines are austere, I found both whites on the dry side, and they reminded me of Italian white wines. The rose indeed tastes of gazpacho, you get tomato up front, and a little green pepper after. I found the merlot to be preferable to the cabernet franc. Kim boxed our purchases up nicely, the owners' thoughtfulness extending to a small box for that special glass. The vintners are extending their operation to distilling, and you can have a spirit tasting if that moves you. Steve gave me a complimentary taste of the gin and that was revelatory. The best description is that it tastes like gin only more so, kind of like your first taste of Bombay Sapphire when you've only had bar brands previously, If I understood correctly this is a result of using botanicals both in the fermentation/distillation process as well as to flavor the neutral spirits. If you're an audiophile as well as an oenophile (and even if you're not) take a moment to ogle the rather extraordinary two chassis single ended tube amplifier powering the background sound system. Steve designed this himself, and built it with friends. At first I thought this was unusual, but then I thought of Shindo, a legendary Japanese amplifier craftsman who names his creations after first growths, and it all made sense to me. Go. Steve gave us very nice detailed explanation of each wine. It's clear he understands the process behind making it and loves to make delicious wine and spirits. The restroom could have been cleaner but all and all it was a nice experience and fantastic wine! read more

I visited this winery with a few family members over the Thanksgiving holiday. Upon entering the winery, the gentleman doing the tasting (Steve, the wine maker), quickly greeted us and explained the simple self guided tour for us to use at our leisure as he was in the middle of a tasting. The self guided 'tour' of the barrel room was simple and very informative. During the tasting, Steve's descriptions of the wines were very good and surprisingly accurate for the wine drinkers in the group as well as the box-wine loving people in the group. (At first some people considered the 'presentation' during the tasting too much information, but after visiting other local wineries, this presentation proved to be very useful). The winery is built on land with a long history. The winery also prides itself on being very "green" The wines are unprocessed and unfiltered and also very good and unique. The tasting consisted of 2 whites, a rose, and two reds. The wine was outstanding. Not being a red wine drinker, I enjoyed the red wines here so much that I purchased a bottle of red (along with a white). The tasting cost $5 and includes the tasting glass. Buying 6 bottles of wines gives you a discounted price. The price of the wines were in the $15-23 per bottle range. ** Second Visit Review ** I was up in the Marlboro area the very next day (and this time with the girl friend), we were pressed for time, so we only had time to stop at one local winery (of the 3 in the area that we had visited the previous day). The experience was very similar to the previous day except there was a good number of people who stopped into the tasting room just to pick up a few bottles of wine. I chose to visit Stoutridge Vineyards because of the amazing facility and very good tasting wines. When I'm in the area next year, I will definitely visit the winery again (and hopefully their distillery will be pumping out some fine spirits) Unfortunately, their wines are not sold in stores. We were a group of 6 and planned on a nice wine tasting experience. The staff was not friendly even when making the reservation. We were running 10 mins late and notified the establishment. We were not told that you pay for that hour and the clock was already ticking so we were rushed into the guided tasting without any guidance. We were then reprimanded like children for not following the rules of the owner and tour guide. He was too involved listening to his own voice for any guidance. He was so disrespectful and rude that we got up and left the tour. The wine and crackers is terrible and not worth the drive. We went to Benmaryl Winery and had a beautiful time with the view, food, wine and wonderful staff. Good service = happy customers. read more
