Modern cars are so damn ugly. Furthermore, even though they're getting more and more expensive, they're becoming worser investments. Modern cars are meant to be disposable. I needed a new car, but I didn't want a NEW car. After doing my research, I ended up purchasing an awesome '74 Jaguar E-Type Roadster. One of my primary requirements for the purchase of this car was having a good, reliable, honest mechanic. They have 10 lifts and all the cars being worked on were beautiful classic British motors. The shop was clean. I was greeted by a fellow named Dane who told me about the shop, its history, and what they do. I knew that if I were to purchase a vintage Jag, they would be my go to shop. The car that I bought had some issues from the get-go. The team at British European Auto had a thorough going-over of my car and identified the things that immediately needed fixing and the things that could be delayed for a bit. Took my 1959 Austin Healey 3000 in to have the front suspension sorted out. After 18 years things were "a bit" wonky. New kingpins, shocks and bushings plus a little tweaking in the rear end and it's better than I ever remember it. It's the first time I've had to rely on someone else doing the work on my car, but I see now that I should have been taking it here long before now. Good job. Very, very professional. Upon observation, British European seems to convey a heavy demand, evidenced by the many jobs they have going on at once, but what a fast turnaround indeed! My brake 1 and brake 2 warning indicators weren't lighting up on the Rolls and this made me very uneasy. Come to find out that the wires were disconnected. If the breaks were to have failed I would never have known. So thank you Bernie and Jeff. I respect the quality that British European puts forth in their work, and they are worth every dollar they charge. They do charge more....a lot more. They take tea on your dime, they charge time for every phone call....basically it's like paying for a lawyer. When they're done the result usually works. When it doesn't they charge fully for doing it a second time. There are many better places in LA for quality, integrity and price. Keep looking. read more

I live in Las Vegas Nevada and since there are no competent garages out here I have my 1971 XJ6 SHIPPED down to Jeff to be worked on. I think even if there were competent shops out here I would still take it there. I have taken many cars to many different places, but rarely have i had such great service! the guys at British European gave me an honest estimate of the labor, parts, and time, and kept in contact with me while they did the work- which i really appreciated. I do not own a European car anymore, but continue to take my vehicle to them because of their superior knowledge and service. I had my Triumph TR3 towed to their shop. The vehicle had been sitting in a industrial yard for approx. 15 years and Jeff got the TR3 running and drivable. Jeff and Bernie are very honest and they have great character. If you have any problem, they will work it out with you. Most shops will take your money and tell you to get lost, if you are not pleased. You will not experience this with them. I've had my Triumph TR6 for seven years and for the last two I have had work done on it by British European - from regular maintenance to an engine rebuild. Although old cars are not complex, they will only work reliably if they are maintained. I use my car as a daily driver. I expect my car to work. That means investing in good maintenance. My experience of the service at British European has been excellent. They are not a main street dealership. They can't turn round work at the pace of a big shop. But they schedule and they stick to their time lines. One thing that impressed me was the range of work they do. I've seen 1920's Rollers, a BMW M1, and so many "in-restoration" Healeys and XKEs. Irreplaceable cars, expensive cars, and cars that people really care about. All trusted to British European. And also, my humble TR6. They are always patient and polite, even when I expose my ignorance of mechanicals. I like their thoroughness and consideration. Most old cars (of any make) were built down to a cost. Original parts weren't always the best and they have often been replaced later with "make-do" parts. Fixing old cars is not just sub-assembly replacement like a modern car. To fix them right needs experience, skill, and creativity which is what I get at British European. They aren't mechanics; they are automotive engineers. And they are good value. Not cheap by any means. Anyone expecting to run a classic car at back alley mechanic prices wasn't paying attention somewhere. Over the long haul Jeff and Bernie have got all the kinks out. I have never had to go back for work to be done again, except for parts failure. With them, you pay once to get it done right the first time. A return trip adds cost, off-road time and aggravation - all of which makes their price right. I'm writing this because I'm selfish - I want them to prosper so they will be around to fix my car next time it needs it. This place is not the cheapest but in my opinion after many disappointing encounters with other mechanics who cut corners, I believe it's the best if you care about your car. These guys are professional, I found this place passing by one day and decided to give them a shot. I brought in my 67 Lotus Elan and delt with Jeff( owner) He gave me an estimate to rebuild motor and stuck to it. In my experience dealing with vintage cars that it's never black and white; He told me they almost went over double the hours to rebuild motor; Jeff was upfront the entire time with me. Other issues came up and he explained them to me, the cost, etc. etc. This place is pricey but afterall we are dealing with collector cars. It is obvious that they've been around the block several times doing business. I too am a business owner and I know what it takes to invent the first wheel. I first took my 1969 MGB GT here as part of a tech day sponsored by the MG Club of So Cal. Jeff, the owner (an English ex-pat), gave each / every of our cars a complimentary 20-30 min 'MOT' style inspection including: inspection on the lift, a test drive and a written list of items needing attention. I subsequently took my car back to him to have the worn rear differential refreshed and replacement of worn chassis insulator pads. The front wire wheels were also in need of balancing which Jeff did in house at no extra charge. They washed the car before delivery back to me and Jeff was attentive enough to call me back himself the next day to be sure I was satisfied with the repairs. I was very confidant with his knowledge (Jags, Triumphs, Austin Healys and an Aston Martin in the shop at the time) and he shares my enthusiasm for vintage sports cars. BTW, Jeff also drives a supercharged 69 MGB GT as his daily driver. I can recommend him highly. read more

I have been going to British European Auto since 1984 and have always had prompt, courteous, friendly, knowledgeable service and advice. They have serviced/repaired for me, over the years, a 1974 Jaguar XJ6, a couple of Toyota trucks, a TR3a, and a TR4. In the rare time when there was a problem, they fixed the issue without charge. I might add that the problem was due to an inexperienced mechanic who worked for them for a couple of years back in the mid-80's. Over the years I have seen them do beautiful, complete restorations of British cars. If they do not have the expertise to repair a modern car, with all of those little computers and electrical gremlins, they will tell you so at the onset. i have a '73 jensen healey that I took to them to redo my engine. I am now in the process of filing a complaint with the bureau of automotive repairs and the better business services. I spent over 3000 dollars and my engine looks like nothing was done. They charged me for mistakes they made. They charged me for a repair that they later admitted to not even doing. They charged me for a carb repair that they either didnt do or damaged when they did it. They fixed my distributor and either but the wrong size on or they didnt do it. In a years time i had to replace it because the cap and rotor was cracked. And they rotor wears out not crack. For that amount of money i shouldnt have this many problems in a years time. I will never go back there nor recomend it to Anyone. Maybe they do good work depending on who brings the car in read more

I have 25 cars in my car collection and have worked with several shops both back east and here in southern California to maintain and repair these cars and the many others I have owned. I have a happy history with most all I have dealt with. I am a knowledgable car owner and mechanically competent and I have carefully chosen who will repair and maintain my cars. Discussing this minor service the whomever answers this companies phone was difficult and uncomfortable. I was not expecting such discomfort simply trying to set up service for my car. I felt the representative was extremely rude and I was surprised when he requested I take the car somewhere else. I found this shop here reading these reviews. Given the fact this shop representative so quickly and so suddenly was willing to take the low road suggests to me this shop should be avoided. British car ownership is already delicate and adding stress to that ownership makes no sense. I recommend avoiding this shop. read more
