Don't let the negative reviews based on Broadway's affiliation with a church turn you away. I do not think those reviews come from unbiased individuals. This reviewer however just wanted a good pour over and room to work on graduate school. I have no experience with this particular church and this is my first time at Broadway. I wanted a good pour over and I got one. Mission successful. I had a lovey Guatemala from Dapper and Wise. An Ethiopian from Coava was the other option. They serve stumptown (meh) as espresso and cold brew. There is so much space to work here! However, most of them were filled with meetings, other students, or moms who came out of a Bible study. If the first floor is full try heading upstairs where it is quieter. Of all the Salem coffee shops the open spaces at Broadway are most appealing to me. Parking is easier than the downtown coffee options. The barista was friendly enough. She asked about my day and made light conversation that was not Dutch Bros invasive. TL;DR - bumping to the 5 because I'm here so often, they're consistently friendly, and I love the space - I can always find a seat, rarely without an outlet accessible. ____________________ I usually order tea, and will rarely order a mocha if I want something more coffee-esque. The WiFi's given me issues a couple of times, but 99% of the time it's been fine, and I'm almost always able to find somewhere with an outlet. Since it's gotten cold(er - let's face it, for my Southern California bones, I've been cold since I moved here), the fire's been lit a few times, which is nice, although it does get quite toasty right near it (duh). It's never unbearably loud, and Better Than Mama's is down the hall if you're ever hungry for something hot and/or savory. My favorite local coffee spot. Walking distance from my house, outdoor and indoor seating, fire pits, and chess sets. Wicker couch outdoors and a little patch of (dog friendly) cool grass that gets shady after 5pm in the summer. The outdoor space generally gets a lot of afternoon sun so bring your solar panels. The coffee is decent but not a lot of options on the menu-come prepared for a fresh local brew over ice, not a carmel-fat laced-double creamy 800 calories flavored beverage. Service is usually pretty speedy and efficient, but the baristas DO definitely have their friends over and chat quite a bit, even when it's busy. Drinks are also Starbucks pricey and the largest size is 16 oz. No discounted refills either. Until I read a review on Yelp I was previously unaware that this place was owned by the church. I myself, am not religious by any stretch, but do support community spaces and places that can bring folks together. That said, I don't think you're going to have missionaries loitering at your table if you choose to enjoy some java there. Great atmosphere to sit, read and relax or do some work on the computer, but can get expensive if you want to spend a few hours (and cups) there. A reviewer found it "stuffy" but I like the atmosphere with guys in suits, having mini meetings after a day at the capitol. Today I went to read and there were some kids there with their parents and frozen yogurt, their squeals and squeaks are unusual at Broadway, it is normally quiet and low key. With the day in age of the giant coffee giants looming over ever corner, small independent and corner coffee shops are slowly fading away. It's always good to see an independent sticking their neck out and competing with the giants to gain a little share in the coffee empire. With that being said, one has to have the goods to back up the fight. The broadway Coffeehouse has all the right beginning check-off's to be a contender. But the ones it's lacking in are the uppercuts and haymakers that knock this place down in the fight. The overall layout in interesting and has a urban warehouse loft feel to it, but that also comes with a price. It feels cold and sterile inside. Most successful coffee houses I have visited had one thing over the big boys, comfort and a feeling of warmth and welcome. Making it, "your" neighborhood coffee house. With the similar high costs as the big boys but lacking in cup size of flavor to match allows for a tough blow to the chin. No warm welcome when entering. Seats are spaced out and with no decor our ambiance to encourage the feeling of sit, drink and socialize. It's openness and lofty type feel is unique, but also offers a feeling of coldness. Overall it was, as the ol' sayin goes, OK. Not bad, but not great. Not making me want to switch up my coffee choice from the giants, but sadly not even from just my pod usage at home. Not a "fast food" mega chain coffee shop, it is nice to be treated with respect and friendliness. The baristas know what they are doing and they take the time to listen and if you frequent this place, you will be welcomed back every time. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. They serve coffee from three roasters; Coava, Dapper & Wise, and Stumptown. I have had their drip coffee, brewed on their Fetco, which was good--what you'd expect from a Fetco automatic pour-over brewer. I also have a Cemex pour-over from staff barista Kevin, which was well done. He seemed to know what he was doing/had training. I would recommend this as well as order it again. The pour over was only $3, which is cheaper by most standards for slow brew coffee. They mainly serve pastries from Great Harvest, so a good level of quality there. But, if you're not a fan of GH, then there isn't much in the way food options...see the photos! read more

One of my favorite coffee places in Salem. It's huge, lots of indoor and outdoor (when it's nice outside) seating with a water fountain. Their marionberry scones are my favorite. Place is pretty cozy and stumptown is always delicious, but this place is known for being a little cheap. I was told by the barista that their policy is to charge for cream for the coffee. I've never heard of that before. He refused to give me a larger cup for my 12 oz coffee. I have been getting 12 oz coffees in 16 oz cups for years to allow room for cream without pouring out the excess coffee, but I guess this is against their policy because "that's the only way they can charge for cream". I have mixed feelings about this cafe. The coffee is relatively good quality, and the baristas know what they are doing. They have kambucha on tap that rotates and is quite delicious! The baristas are not always the friendliest. I have often been trying to order and the baristas are only half listening to me, and half talking to friends or co-workers. Sometimes I feel like an inconvenience. This has improved more recently. The recent remodel improved the vibe. I like the open atmosphere and the decor. I appreciate that they feature local artists. 5 stars? What are the other reviewers thinking? Just because they offer Stumptown - good but overrated coffee - does not garner a 5 star review! This place is owned and run by the church that owns the whole block. It has just as much culture, coolness, and atmosphere as the church does, which is zero. The walls are devoid of any art. There is no resemblance of a coffeehouse vibe. You almost feel like you are in an institution (in a sense you are). Sadly, this is what you'd expect when a boring church opens up a coffee shop - Boring with a capital B. Not too long ago they banned the Salem Weekly newspaper from their free racks because - hold your breath - the newspaper ran an ad for a tattoo shop that displayed a woman's bare back - OMG! UPDATE....summer 2012 ...Looks like folks need to be reminded, this coffee shop is owned and operated by the mega-church (by Salem standards) right next door. So you might keep in mind when you read these 5 star reviews, most of those folks attend the SAC church just steps away, and would rate a little espresso cart in the church lobby 5 stars. Do you really want to drink your Stumptown (highly over rated and very under-roasted -- and no, I'm not a French roast kind of guy) while listening to multiple Bible studies occurring around you, and then have your search for herb linguine pasta with chicken breast blocked by their internet filter? Shame on you for looking up recipes with naughty words! Update early 2014 - I have upgraded them to 2 stars, as sometimes they are the only place in Salem open till 10pm. Drinks remain overpriced, and they only offer Stumptown coffee. I recently tried out Broadway Coffeehouse because it it near where I live and one of the few cafes I haven't yet tried in Salem. I'll start off by saying that they received a mere two stars from me due to their slow service, poor customer service, and high pricing. That said, the coffee there is DELICIOUS! Which is the only reason I would ever go back. I like the large space and plentiful indoor/outdoor seating. They could do a little more with the decor, it's pretty sparse. I knew that there was an upstairs, but not that it was also part of the coffeehouse until I read some of the previous reviews. I also didn't know that it was owned by the church because that isn't marked or stated anywhere in sight, not sure why. I agree with Marcia's review from 03/2012, where she states that the barista spent most of his time chatting it up with one particular customer, taking his time and going extraordinarily slow while other customers were waiting for their drinks. I have visited this cafe twice and had the exact same thing happen both times. While the staff is friendly and seems knowledgeable, their customer service is atrocious and insulting. On both visits I came very close to asking for my money back and walking out the door. It's fine to be friendly with your patrons, but if you have other people to wait on, then please cut the convo and just make my drink. This, more than anything is my reason for giving this place a low score. If you read the other reviews, this particular issue is repeated by several people. The last thing I want to say is in regard to the prices. High. Not outrageously high, but high. I ordered a 16oz. iced vanilla latte and it cost me $4.75. Seriously? It had one shot, and half the cup was full of ice. I would say $3.75-MAYBE $4.25 would be more appropriate. I also don't understand why the largest coffee you can get there is only 16oz. Oh wait, yeah I do... that way if you want more, they can double charge you. The only saving grace for this place is their coffee, which is fantastic. Not burnt, not pre-made. Broadway is a great place to be in Salem. If you walk downtown it would seem most of the 20-somethings have up and left to bigger and badder cities like Portland or Seattle. O contraire, the energy of young professionals, youthful creatives and the spiritual community have in part relocated to a telecommuting sanctuary called Broadway Coffeehouse. When it comes to coffee, this is undoubtedly one of the better places in Salem to sit and sip slow while you grind away. The coffeehouse is owned by a church across the street BUT I'm going to preface that statement by saying... the coffee and service do not come draped in any tales of jesus. Its just good coffee and friendly -secular- customer service. They primarily brew the well known -Stumptown beans- and have special offerings from other PDX roasters like Coava. What they lack in coffee selection they have in brewing methods, offering a variety including aeropress, beehouse, chemex, or french press. It's all here. They're not a Starbucks type of place in terms of sugary fraps and endless towers of merch. It's very evident they take the "craft" of coffee pretty seriously and that means a simple menu with the flagship being black coffee ...cream and sugar is over there behind you (and far away from us). The upside to this is you you can inquire any barista on site and they'll passionately inform you of their process, their preferences, techniques, etc. The baristas are generally personable and thats a coffeeshop staple if there's ever been one. What really makes Broadway special beyond just good coffee and friendly service is the atmosphere. The cafe is built with protruding natural light that often makes you feel like you're in a glass house. When sun sets, you get to feel it. It has wide open spaces complimented with little nooks for privacy, conferences rooms, etc. In short, a space that gives one room to think. My only minor qualm is the realization that you're in the presence of many religious folk -few of whom love exalting the grace of god without a reasonable sense of volume. Don't hold it against them, they are just comfortable in a place that makes them feel free. They're far and few between, but when you encounter them, remember... There are always other places to sit! Beautiful building, friendly staff, tasty coffee, kind of pricey, absolutely atrocious internet. I just moved to Salem and I am still waiting for Comcast to set up internet at my house so I'm having to hop from coffeehouse to coffeehouse to do all the myriad things that need done after moving halfway across the country. It's actually been a fun experience because I've gotten to try lots of fabulous coffee and food and explore the city. Prices seem a little high. I come from Texas, the land of Starbucks and bad coffee, but paying $4+ for an 8oz. latte is a tad much. That's half the volume of a regular cup of coffee. The internet here was so bad that I resorted to connecting through my phone's mobile hotspot. I can see from reviews that this is not a new problem - or, apparently, one that is considered worth fixing. Or perhaps it's intentional. In any case they're certainly not suffering for business because of it, as the place was full of people. I can't fault them for their service or their coffee, but if you're looking for a place to be productive while you sip, this is not it. You'll spend more time staring at the revolving circles on your computer than the work you meant to do while you were here. I spent my time writing this review because I was so irritated. I could have done my mobile hotspot at home without looking for a parking spot. I just attempted to connect via the WiFi here again in an effort to make sure it wasn't just a fluke, and it stalled out again and again. It couldn't even load the Broadway Coffeehouse splash page that asks you to agree to their terms and conditions before accessing the internet. I had to reconnect to my phone just to post this review. STUMPTOWN. Need I really say anymore?!?! I have had the privelige of watching Broadway Coffeehouse grow into the establishment it is today by pure happenstance. The space is incredibly large and can be a little overwhelming when it is quiet (unless you go to coffee shops to get some quiet) but accomodates SOO many people, which after church on Sunday, is a good thing. The service started off a little slow as the baristas were learning but they are at almost full speed now and I have never had a bitter or burnt coffee there. The lounges are comfy and if you have a study group there are conference rooms available (although they seem to be in high demand). There are live music events and the whole atmosphere is a lot of fun. Great Harvest pastries are delicious, but unfortunately this establishment cannot heat them for you. I highly reccomend this place if you like good coffee and like to socialise over a cup or ten! read more

I was visiting Salem just for a few days this month and a friend told me that they had the perfect coffee house for me as I was, according to her, a "geek." Broadway was a bit of a departure from that typical coffee house feel in that it is very big, bright and open. It admittedly feels a bit more like a conference center or a library than a coffeehouse but the vibe worked for me, personally. I walked in and, embarassingly, squealed a bit, first when I saw "Stumptown" and again when I saw the pour over tray. Not to say the Stumptown is the litmus test for exceptional coffee houses, but it sure doesn't hurt. You could actually see my barista's eyes light up when I asked for one and he got even more excited as I asked him about weight of the coffee, the temperature of the water and what his opinion was on weighing water. If you want one, make sure you get there before they are busy (before 9). I'm NOT an expert on coffee, but I love learning and each barista I spoke to was excited to share what they knew and it was impressive. They even referred me to a couple of blogs (dearcoffeeiloveyou.com) and roasters. I came in the next day and one of the baristas, again, lit up and made sure to tell the other to, "wait, make sure it's a good one, she knows coffee." True? Probably not. Shameless flattery? Perhaps. But they made my week by being kind, teaching me a bit, and brewing me 2 great cups of coffee (indonesian Gajah Aceh and Ethiopian Mordecofe). Not the best of my life, but the experience made all the difference. Perhaps my favorite part was that there was not a blender in sight, although there were plenty of iced lattes crossing the counter. It was a nice compromise between snobby "no we will not serve you that!" and "Wait, wait... *just* espresso??" I love this place! Laid back atmosphere, great coffee, their matcha latte is supreme. While I haven't used the rooms upstairs, they are "free" to reserve if you promise to buy a drink. Deal! I am a regular here and I WISH I could give them 5 stars. I took away two stars for two reasons" The WIFI is temperamental. If you are planing on hunkering down for a few hours and need to use the internet - good luck. The coffee is inconstant. Depending on your barista you can expect one of the best cups of coffee or an "OK" cup of coffee - the "OK" is still better than anything else you'll find in Salem. I go to Broadway coffeehouse every morning for my morning coffee at about 6 a.m. The coffee is pretty good most days, I think they typically use Hairbender but they sell a variety of Cova coffees so they may change it up. The pros: open 6am - 10pm daily. They have a fireplace and the shop is large w/ comfy seating. The cons: their customer service is only good about half the time. I was especially disappointed this morning when I only had an Amex on me - unaware that they were one of the few living in the dark ages - and the barista didn't even offer to let me pay for my coffee tomorrow; a black cup of pre-brewed coffee I get every day... As a regular, I admit, I expect some small privileges. After a month: having to always repeat my order; having to initiate a conversation beyond, "what would you like today?"; and being turned away and having to go get coffee elsewhere on a morning where I was already short on time; I didn't come back. Also, I emailed there customer service five days ago to ask about paper towels in the bathroom because their hand drier hasn't been cleaned in weeks and is gross, they still haven't emailed me back. read more
