We stopped in on a rainy Friday night. Why wouldn't we enter a bar with sugar skulls everywhere! There was a band and this place was PACKED. We quickly realized why it was so busy - their beers are tasty! I ordered the sour and could have had 3 of them. Unfortunately since it was pouring out, there was nowhere to sit, so we stood in the hallway - which was not a problem at all. We are hopeful to be able to return when it's not pouring down rain! Everyone seemed to be having such a good time, ourselves included!! read more

Located in West Reading on Penn Ave, Broken Chair Brewery is one of the newest additions to the area, and now one of several brewery/beer eateries on Penn Ave. Typical of most of the area shops and restaurants, Broken Chair is located in an old, converted town home, so relatively narrow and long. There is a small bar area that seats about 10, plus table seating for another 25-30. This place can get busy on the weekends, so get there early for a guaranteed seat. They have a large selection of beer, and you can order flights to try them all and narrow down your choice. Something a little different than most other area locations: there is no table service, so you go up to the bar to order, then carry your own drinks back to the table. Im sure this lightens the need for personnel working there, but increases the chances of dropped glasses by customers, as we saw one or two while we were there. There is also no food, but you can either bring in your own food, or order in from one of the many local restaurants. Overall, our time here was a good experience and its always nice to see additional eating and drinking choices in the area. read more

I wanted to like this place, because they're small and new and had a great selection of beer. Plenty of fruit-inspired IPAs, a cream ale, DIPA, wheat ale, stouts, etc. It was a Saturday late afternoon, and only the bar area was occupied (with maybe 5 people, all spread out). We sat at a long thin table behind the bar to pick out our flight (4 beers per flight), and when we saw two people were about to leave the bar, we swept in and grabbed those seats. You have to walk over to the end of the bar to order and pay though, which is weird. There were two bartenders, but no one greeted us when we walked in. No one asked if we had any questions, needed any help, etc. They just seemed like they really didn't want to be there-- I mean that, or they really didn't want us to be there. I couldn't tell you. We tried the mangoal (mango wheat) and it was pretty good, but didn't taste a hint of mango. The pineapple IPA didn't have any hint of pineapple, the wrong direction DIPA wasn't impressive, and the creme ale was pretty good. We'd have liked to ask about the blueberry milkshake IPA, but the bartenders weren't exactly encouraging conversation. Overall, the beer was okay, but we just didn't feel welcomed. Had an awesome time at Broken Chair on a busy Saturday afternoon. We grabbed 3 seats at the bar and were promptly welcomed by Kayla. She gave us some tips on what to get in our flights and we thoroughly enjoyed each one we had. Kayla is definitely an asset to the brewery, the staff makes the brewery and she was awesome. This place is AMAZING. An absolute must visit if you're in the area. We we're camping nearby with family and decides to check it out on a whim since they had such a great selection. We are so glad we did. I have never visited a brewery with so many drastically different beers on tap, and I liked ALL of them, which has never happened before. The restrooms were super clean, you can bring your own food and it appears kid friendly. Music was playing and I believe that they do have live music on select nights. A great new find on Penn Ave on West Reading. I ordered a filght of four 5oz pours. Hops were my fancy today so the flight consisted of 3 IPAs and Imperial Stout. First up was World Destruction, a 5 hop, 80 IBU, 6.6% complexly flavored IPA that was delicious which my soul mate also ordered in a pint. She described it as "invitely busy on your palate". Wrong Direction was the next IPA in line. A 110 IBU, 9.45% hopped ale which would make a hop head sit up a take notice. I next took a step back on the IBU scale to Time Warp, a session like ale which was something you could drink responsibly all day long. This ale stats come in at 6% ABV, 66 IBU. Last on the flight plan was Silent Elevation, a 71 IBU, 9.2% Imperial Stout which was very good. My soulmate is a connoisseur of Imperials, so let her have small taste. Her eyes lit up with a big smile. This Imperial had a great stout flavor with subtle hops addition. The owners also made us very welcome and engaged in a quite delightful discussion about their brewing operations, conversion of the space from the former tile business into the brick walled tasting room with some of the finest vinyl album records I have not seen since the 70s. A definite musr stop if you are in West Reading looking for great beer and atmosphere. We will be back! read more

This place is simply fantastic. Absolutely a welcome addition to the budding West Reading beer scene. I've tried all of their stouts and porters, and they stand alongside some of the better dark beers I've tasted, especially in this area. Their Pineapple IPA is a revelation, and should be noted as a jewel of West Reading (right next to Chatty Monk's Endoplasmic Reticulum). They're still working out some of the kinks, but the atmosphere is great, music is great, and the beer is pretty darn good. read more

West Reading is becoming a craft brew town. This is the former Gehris Tile place, next to the A to Z Vacuum building. Great-looking beer list. No food yet, so they will allow you to bring in your own or order pizza. Can't wait to taste the Key West Pineapple IPA. I want to like this place but beer is mediocre at best. There are much better options in Berks.

Upon entering, it was apparent the owners had the funds to remodel the building and purchase all new furnishings, but gave off a sterile vibe. Their logo is a skull with peace sign eyes and not sure how a broken chair fits into the story. The bartender was preoccupied with her cell phone. I was able to order a flight of beers and would rate all selections as average. I wanted to like this place, but felt like it was a hobby business for wealthy owners who liked beer and thought it would be fun to open a microbrew and let their kids manage it. read more

Good beer and nice variety. If you're in a snacking mood, they have a few options. Otherwise, they allow you to bring in outside food which is awesome as they want to support locals as well. Staff was attentive and overall a great atmosphere. The "broken chair" is on display in the front window which adds to the ambience of the place. This place is fairly new so we will give them a second try. It was an ice and fire fest so was packed.,we got a flight but there as no where to sit. My husband and I stopped here right after it opened up on a date night. We thought we would check it out since we like craft beer. The beer at Broken Chair is fairly priced and pretty good. The atmosphere is a little static and it's odd standing in line to order your beer when you have a seat at the bar. Bring some sunglasses because around 9pm (an hour until they close) they turn on stadium lighting that's so bright it's unbearable. read more

I was there opening day and was there last week for the 4th time. I want all local businesses to succeed but this place is only doing well because of it's location. The beer is awful, all of it. Every single beer I had here were flat tasting and gross. Customer service is horrible because of the owners son who stands at the end of the bar with the employees and talks trash on customers. A friend of mine asked who brews the beer. He said he does. My friend asked him what kind of grain bill was used in a certain beer and he had no clue how to answer him. When my friend walked away the son clearly didn't realize I was with him and he proceeded to talk smack about the his question to the 2 female bartenders who didn't look all that thrilled to be around him. 4 times is enough. All beers made on site. Excellent dark beers on draft, Daywalker Coffee is my personal favorite. Relaxing and casual enviorment. No kitchen, just snacks but they encourage you to bring whatever food you like in, provided plates, napkins ect. for us. Becoming my go to spot. The owners and bartenders are very welcoming. They were willing to answer questions as well as let us sample before ordering. For a small spot they have 23 taps, everything brewed on site. You can peek in the brewery at the back. Great selection, which is refreshing if IPA's aren't your go to thing. ( If they are, they had like 6 different ones and my boyfriend loved them, especially the Citra and Insanity) You can bring your own food in, they have some snacks, also keep wine and cider if that's your thing. I really enjoy their beer. Most of them are more mild than many other places...I like their darker beers, which at most places, are too bitter for me. That may appeal to some and not others, but I think it's great. Small place, but great atmosphere. This is one of my favorite places to drink in the area. read more
