This place is a hidden gem for sure! I have noticed it a few times on my visits to Bend previously, but this December 2023 was my first time going. And, their food was amazing! And, their beer on tap is great, and next door is a bottle shop for even more choice. The staff were very friendly and courteous. And, it sounds like all their meats and such are smoked in house. Our server, Sherrie (not sure how to spell it) it was fantastic. I was so tired from our hikes and journey from Crater Lake, rain on and off, lightning, and flooding street on this strange city of Bend, that I was feeling unease and anxious. Sherrie's friendly attitude and smile was refreshing. I had an old fashioned - tasty, good balance, and right amount of ice. We shared the 1/4 Rack Baby Back Ribs & Kettle chips and House Smoked Tri Tip salad. Wow.... Excellent food and from a Pub. The ribs were cooked to perfection, fall off the bone and like butter and the home BBQ Sauce is the right amount of sweet and spices. The salad was generous serving of fresh organic crisp mixed greens, julienne apples, spiced almond and a Goat cheese croquette that made this salad very special. The location: kind of hard to park at times, ok, really impossible to park most times. Not really sure what the dealio is? yoga or college parking but it pretty bad. This is why we had never visited, but today there were spots open and like magic, a new customer! This location has had some great restaurants in the past, but this one seems to have a good following. Ambiance: Not so much romantic, but fun. Service: Waitstaff were friendly and ordering was quick as was food delivery, but there were only 4 tables. Food: Average but perfect. Nice menu with lots of selections but mostly what one may expect form a locals beer hangout. There were a few healthy options. There's normally enough to keep me happy but on one visit, there were only two out of the dozen or so that I'd order. Quite a few are too high in alcohol for me. Food: - Mahi mahi tacos are solid, perhaps a bit bland. They would do well to offer a salsa or pico as well as hot sauces. - Mango sriracha wings very good. Both mango and sriracha are subtle. - Tahini garlic wings OK. Not my favorite but they're good for something different. - Veggie empanada: menu said empanadas but you only get one large. Very good. - Turkey Reuben is very good. One of the better I've had. - Mac and cheese - ordered as an extra-cost side for the Reuben - was top tier. Maybe the best I've had and having lived in the South for many years, I've tried a lot of M & C. This is really good stuff. It's also a huge side dish. Service is good, mostly. When the counter gets busy with bottle shop orders, your server may get distracted for a while. Great spot to grab a drink and enjoy some brews with friends and family! We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere, easy to hold conversations but lively enough where we had a great time! I've never had a problem parking since day one! I've been semi regular since they've opened. The menu is extensive. I tend to stick to some of my favorites as pictured. They had me at Brussels sprouts NOT fried.. tempeh and one of their many amazing sauces. I like the tahini garlic the best for dipping. Once you look at their menu you will know you can find some thing for everybody. Tonight they happened to have many dark beers on tap which made it easy for me to mix two that went together nicely. They are accommodating, courteous, patient and the food is always consistent and delicious. When they make vegan soups, you can bet it's about the best you can find in Bend. read more

Another poor experience. I don't like the interior lighting, which makes me feel like I'm sitting under 70's fluorescent tubes. The prices are "too high" considering the weak quality food we received last night. Same opinion as Jimmy C below regarding the quinoa bowl. Meal and service were maybe a "2" of 5 *'s While I'm sure the quinoa bowl is profitable for the restaurant it's certainly not a healthy bowl as expected. $14 for a bowl of rice, a tiny bit of quinoa...followed by a small portion of thin shaved (over-cooked and over-salted) meat substance on top. Yuck. Server was sloppy, unprofessional and rarely checked on our table. Imagine my surprise when I gave her $90 cash for a $55 check (for three adults) ... never saw her again. Poof, she disappeared. Frustrated and irritated, annoyed, and pissed - a poor experience overall. Won't go back and we live three blocks away. read more

Great bottle shop. Great taps. Great kitchen. Full bar. Nice space. You can't ask for too much more, really. They have a couple dozen taps, including plenty of specialty local items (even a CBD elixir from Boneyard--mix it with vodka or gin for a nice relaxing cocktail). There are half a dozen coolers with interesting bottles from up and down the coast, as well as throughout the U.S. and some imports. You can take them home for 10% less than you pay in store. Some of the stuff includes some really nice finds for the beer geek. The shrimp & grits and the tri-tip philly were both rad. Tons of rich deep flavors at good prices. Hearty food to sate a weary body's appetite after a long drive. The beers were in good shape, poured mostly in proper glassware. Everything was just great. The staff were nice, though a bit sullen at times (maybe midweek doldrums?). I'd happily come back regularly if I lived in the area. read more

Broken Top Bottle Shop has an amazing selection of bottled beers if you just want to swing by and grab a brew to go. The selection rotates and they seem to have something for everyone, even me which is tough as I don't typically enjoy IPA's. Don't let the fact that they are a bottle shop fool you. They have a small tap list with usually a fairly divers mix for such a small selection. They also have great food with an awesome happy hour and amazing 60 cent wings on Sunday. Although reluctant to assign only three stars to new local places in search of an audience, based on a first visit there new biz kinks to work out. BOTTOM LINE: With a lot of casual food places in a similar price point in this Bend Westside locale, this is one we'll amble back to eventually but not a place we'll rush back to soon. BOTTLE SHOP: The Bottle Shop portion of this endeavor is not yet up and running. It will offer both beer and wine. Although there are already a plethora of places in Bend to buy both, we'll look forward to this bottle shop opening too. It is ALE CAFÉ experience reviewed here where our lunch time visit revealed some hits and some misses. SERVICE: Cordial and tableside. (No need to stand in line at the bar to order.) MENU: Interesting for pub style food. Several vegetarian options, a few that are vegan and many for omnivores. Some gluten gree options too, something I notice since I have family members who are gluten intolerant. Daily specials are on a chalkboard. Some ingredients are called out specifically as being from local vendors - as in the Cada Dia cheese used in some entrees and the Bonta gelato on the dessert menu. FOOD & VALUE: Execution details need better attention based on our lunch. Prices are on par with other casual West Side sit down eateries like Brother Jon's Public House, Brother Jon's Alehouse, Good Life Bierhall, Boken and Barrio or food trailers Red Napkin, Real Food Street Bistro and Spork. The Ale Cafe has a lot of good competition from those other places for the same audience of diners. And some of that competition is creating very good food. Two of us shared a BLTA sandwich ($9). Sandwiches come with chips or salad or for a buck extra, you can have a cup of mac n'cheese. We choose the latter. The generously sized sandwich was on toasted bread. Thanks to TJH's review we asked for the homemade aioli to be applied with a light hand and it was. Overall an OK sandwich - the aioli was tasty and the bacon was plentiful but the iceberg lettuce was in too big a "hunk" and the tomatoes were too few and thin and under-ripe. Details make the whole and this is an example of food execution details, even in simple things, that need attention. The mac n cheese was good save for one execution flaw. The well seasoned white cheese sauce was a just right amount and the smoked roasted tomatoes and bread crumbs on top were a nice touch. But the penne that was the mac part had been way overcooked to smithereens. An important detail to get wrong. AMBIANCE: Nice blues and mellow rock mix on the sound system on the day we were there. I'm not sure how much of the dark red décor is new or leftover from the Abbey Pub days, which is what this was until recent ownership change. SEATING: "...a memorable experience for people of all ages..." is the goal of the four nice people who collectively own this enterprise as stated on a note on each table. If that is their goal then the seating here presents a challenge in reaching it for some of the "...all ages". The not so good thing here was awkward seating. All but eight seats, two tables of four, were high seating / bar table and stool height. The limited table height seating is at the worst location in the restaurant, right as you come in the drafty door. I imagine the parents with the small child who were using one of those tables, given bar height seating doesn't safely work for small kids, weren't thinking this was the "...memorable experience" the owners had in mind each time that door opened to blast the table with cold air. Not only parents with small children, but some senior citizens and people with mobility disabilities (whether permanent or temporary), who can't use bar height seating at most of the tables. At the bar, I get it. But it's puzzling how restaurants think the high perch tables and stools are welcoming and comfortable to be the main seating source on floor. ACCESSIBILITY: Level in and all on one level. Lousy seating options in limited standard height tables. Accessible parking is awkward. read more

Just went to Broken Top Bottle Shop. I usually think of this as a place to buy/drink beer or see a live streamed Phish show. However, I recently had a few meals there and they were spectacular. There is a wide selection of choices. You can go healthy or not. Killer salads using very high quality fresh ingredients. Good wings too. They aren't fried as God intended wings to be BUT they are smoked to perfection and, because they use normal sized wings instead of those gross giant steroid wings they are great. Solid burgers as well. I now think of this place as a great restaurant that happens to have a huge beer selection that also sells beer to go. The owners love good music, so there's that too. Wifey and I have high standard in food due to Norcal and SF bay roots and this place meets the flava need everytime. If your on the fence and not sure where to hit next. Give it go you won't be dissapointed unless they only have one of your favorite beers or mead or honey wine etc. in stock. (I think they have a hundred beer, wine and cider, hard kimbucha etc selections. Then full bar and draft taps. Dude, all my alcohol needs get met. It's like sin city for food and drinks. Nice place on the west side of Bend that serves a variety of craft beers that are not all from Bend, but from the PNW & west coast breweries. This is nice since you can go to a lot of places in Bend an get a beer from 10Barrel, Boneyard or Deschutes. Now I didn't get any food on my last visit so I can't speak for the quality of the food served. read more

We love this place and find ourselves choosing it over and over. Sure we have our favorite menu options like the wedge salad or the squash lasagna, but you really can't go wrong. They are known for their smoked meats, (their wings are amazing) but it's all great. No deep fryer on site so you get side choices like fresh cut veggies and homemade dressings or homemade coke slaw...and the drink selection is fantastic...both in the restaurant as well as a walk of cold cases with unique to go options, so head on in and give it a try! read more

My BF and I met a friend at BTBS for a drink and appetizers. We ordered beers and one glass of a passion fruit CBD cider. Meh! We decided to have nachos. $16!! Plus $6 extra for chicken. The nachos were OK. Not really enough cheese and the chips were sitting on a portion of beans. The amount of added chicken did not justify the price. Since we were three we also ordered BBQ wings. 12 wings for $18!! Good, not great. Over $60 for nachos, wings, and beer...a bit ridiculous. I will probably not go back. The tri tip dip is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. That tender meat and caramelized onions with cheese is amazing. But when you add in some good hunks of portobello in there. Forget about it. I inhaled this thing in front of business contacts I barely knew and I didn't care. I will come back for this sandwich. The mac and cheese is good. Nice texture and lots of cheese. Hubby and I steered this way on a leisurely Sunday afternoon looking for a nachos fix. He had seen a thread in the Bend subreddit about nachos, wherein BTBS had been mentioned multiple times. We arrived to a pretty good crowd and took a seat at the bar. It was nice to see a place with enough customers; so many are struggling to get people in the door. Service was attentive and friendly, if a bit slow. Understandable. We each got a pint and ordered the nachos. They featured a fine beer selection, as one would expect from an establishment so-named. And the menu featured a number of items that sounded promising (I've had their tri-tip salad before, and it was exceptional). Right off the bat, however, I was a bit put off by the pricing. The nachos started at $16, which is no small amount for chips with a bunch of delicious stuff on it. Adding protein cost $6 more, and is limited to chicken and tempeh (is that a protein? not sure...). That's an awful lot for a meatless plate of nachos, compared to other places around town. With the chicken (because let's be honest... tempeh on nachos is just a crime against comfort food!) that's $22. For that amount, the nachos would basically have to be a transcendental, religious experience, made manifest on a plate. This was not that experience. They were good. The amount was sufficient. But that's as far as my praise can travel down this particular road. Again, nothing was wrong with them, but they weren't exceptional. And for $16 without protein, they ought to be. We will return because we like the vibe and the friendly service. But I don't think I would get the nachos again. read more

We went on Friday, May 7, when dining indoors was again allowed. Businesses in Oregon have put up with so much from the government - I applaud the businesses that are fighting to make it work. The place was surprisingly busy at lunch considering all the confusion among the public re: open or not open. The one server was also the bartender; she had her hands full but did a great job. Good selection of taps and the adjacent bottle shop will definitely have something for you to try. I got a nice lager in the bottle shop. You bring it to the bartender, she adds it to your tab, then brings to the table with a glass. I ordered the small chicken Caesar and my wife had the BLT. Both were very good. read more

She had a soft pretzel with a pesto based dipping sauce and thought it was great. I had the corona bean and andouille sausage soup. Did not care for the bean but otherwise well made and tasty.
