My family and I have been frequenting Brookdale Pet Store for over 5 years and we love supporting this family-owned business. We own a gekko, a frog and a full fish tank and buy all of our pet supply needs here. The owner and staff have always been warm, welcoming, knowledgable and accommodating. The owner does a wonderful deed of rescuing animals and fostering them back to health. My kids are 4 and 6 and we walk around and pet the rabbits. Our questions (and we have many!) are always answered with time and care. They are very nice to my children and their friends - and as a mother of young children, I very much appreciate that. I've been shopping at Brookdale Pet Center for well over 10 years. They carry all the well known holistic and natural dog foods. I buy Raw Dynamic dog food and Answers Pet Food and Primal Pet Foods goat milk. The prices are fair, and Chris and his staff are always pleasant and cordial. I highly recommend this shop. read more

Update: The proprietor and I eventually made contact and he expressed remorse over the incident; I've altered my rating in recognition. Although I don't live in New Jersey, this establishment arranged a customer account for me so that friends, who do live in the area and are taking long-term care of my pet, could obtain supplies without having to pay out-of-pocket. Unfortunately, despite all effort that went into the arrangement, including many telephone conversations over several days, my providing all the information they require, and their assurances, Brookdale failed to meet their end of our agreement. The first time my friends attempted to make a purchase and have the items billed to my account, they were denied. They had to use their own funds to pay - precisely what I was trying to avoid. It caused them a financial inconvenience, and embarrassment for me. I alerted the store but have not been contacted with a refund offer, an apology, or even an explanation. read more

I have tried on multiple occasions to support this local pet store as I truly prefer to buy local. The staff may be knowledgable but also lazy. I have gone into the store looking to buy food and other supplements and left frustrated that people are standing around talking to each other and not helpful at all. Recently, I walked into the store while holding a 50 lb bag of dog food to return and instead of helping me I was literally yelled at to pull up my mask! I will NEVER shop there again and will NEVER recommend this store to anyone. Why not get off your pedestal and help me with the bag so I dont have to struggle walking into the store. Helpful staff members, clean location, and the animals are well-cared for here. We originally stopped by a PetSmart on Route 3 & didn't feel comfortable purchasing a hamster with them because we knew they are all caged in to continuously breed (so that PetSmart brings in more $$$). Each cage held several hamsters and it just didn't make me feel good to purchase a pet with them. At Brookdale, all the hamsters receive the care that they deserve & need. Because they are quite territorial by nature, they are all kept separately in their own cages. The employee who assisted us handles all of them individually and we could tell by the way he interacted with them that he really does like them and know them. He showed us each hamster and In the end, we chose a fluffy furball and named her GalacTika - Tika for short. There is also a female cat who prowls the store and LOVES her some male attention (she got a lot of rubbing up against ya if you are male). read more

Brookdale Pet Center has been my go-to for rabbit food and bedding for many years. Rabbit Supplies: Brookdale Pet Center carries an assortment of fresh Oxbow products -- pellets and hay. This brand was recommended to me by a vet after my rabbit had some digestive issues with Kaytee. BPC partners with Oxford to give their customers a great incentive where you buy a certain number of bags of pellets/hay and get a bag free. Staff: The staff is super friendly, courteous and knowledgeable about the products and pet care. Overall: The store is clean and organized and the different animal cages (lizards, birds, guinea pigs, etc.) all look to be maintained well. read more

Automatically earns 4 stars for always having the Oxbow Adult Rabbit food in stock, every time we've been so far in the last year. Found out today that the store does not sell rabbits or guinea pigs - management calls and educates interested parties on what it takes to be a good pet owner. If they're still interested, Brookdale puts them in touch with local animal rescue organizations. That gives this store a solid 5 stars in my book! Stop in to pet the store kitty, and say to Rhino the guinea pig. read more

This pet store has everything a reptile owner like me could ever need. The staff is knowledgeable about different species and their diet as well. I was pleasantly surprised when the cashier asked me if my frozen mice were for my Leopard Gecko, because they are not supposed to eat them. The quality of the horn worms are top notch. I've been going to this pet store for over ten years. They really know what they're talking about and are always very helpful.

I had a review up here that was very critical because I thought the salespeople were way too pushy, I thought they were trying to get a ton of upsells and thought they were being unreasonable when they refused to sell me a goldfish without buying a tank, filter, etc as well (I had a bowl). I still think they were unreasonable (I got the fish, tank, etc elsewhere as a result). I decided to try giving them a second chance so I went back today. Right off the bat one of the guys I talked to originally was starting to get a little... not sure how to describe it. Almost condescending? A bit of a know it all, maybe? But what he suggested didn't include a bunch of upsells this time and in fact he just suggested I do things differently rather than my buying stuff. I realized then that I got the wrong impression of him and his coworker last time. They're not like that because they're trying to sell you a bill of goods. They're like that because they care a lot. Maybe too much, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Anyway, I'll go back again. The guy was really nice once I realized where he was coming from. And he seemed incredibly knowledgable. read more

Don't go to Petco when you can come to a local neighborhood spot that really cares about your pets. I miss Brook the cat (she used to live there) but the owners are great people. They have specials a the time and are always friendly and willing to help. They also keep it clean so you won't see dead fish floating in their tanks (Totowa Petco). read more

Staff is friendly, albeit not too knowledgeable unless you happen upon one of the owners. Pretty clean, and the animals are very healthy and well cared for. Went in on an 'emergency' type visit looking for an inflatable cone collar as my dog was just neutered and the plastic cone he came home with was a nightmare. I stopped in here seeing it had good reviews. They did not have any in stock - which is ok i understand it's a smaller store and really how many people are going to be looking for one. But when the girl came back from asking if they were instock she told me they could order one which would take a few days, but she basically just said i shouldn't even bother buying one because they aren't any good!!! Needless to say I drove further out of my way to Petco to pick up this collar and it worked perfectly. read more

The staff is courteous,, knowledgeable, helpful and very friendly 2. The clientele enjoys coming to the store and many seem to have been long-time customers who know Chris and his wife and their baby Myra. 3. Chris is a true animal advocate; he is also very personable and engaging. 4. There is a wide variety of products including an impressive selection of top of the line pet food brands. 5. These guys are great. I recently broke my foot and called Brookdale Pet Center because I needed help cleaning out my fish tank (couldn't reach it with the cast). Scott and Chris called me back and let me set up an appointment with them to clean the tank. They also offered suggestions on the types of fish I could get and set me up with live plants instead of the fake plastic kind. They couldn't have been nicer, came when it was convenient for me, and were reasonably priced. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for help setting up a tank or keeping it maintained. I've been really impressed with this store. The two young people who work there on Sundays are very knowledgeable about fish. They give good advice about tanks, filters, food, water-cleaning products, etc. They really care about keeping your fish healthy, know their products, and have a good amount of stock on hand. Worst service and the most unpleasant sales people I've ever met. Here's the story: I wanted to buy a bunny. First we have been waiting almost half an hour to get an assistant (and, yes, we were the only customers at the store). Than the lady who came to help us, couldn't explain us anything about taking care of the bunny, nor even show us a bunny (kids wanted to hold the pet for a moment, as for me it was important to check first if this bunny is friendly and god with kids). But this lady instead just started to put to our cart all "necessities" that we will need (of course plenty of these thing I could buy anywhere else for lower price, but ok)... Finally I was refuse to sell me a bunny, because I didn't wan't to buy a spray that eliminate stains and animal's odor!!!! what!!?? seriously?! Conclusion is very simple: If you are not going to buy from them the all "package" you will get nothing. I will not recommend this pet store to anybody :/ read more

I went in to this pet store about a week ago and saw that they had a fish that I wanted and have not been able to find anywhere in this area. I have two fully stocked tanks that have been up and running with no issues for months now. Each tank has a fish almost identical to the one I wanted to purchase, just a different color. So i went in again the other day and was greeted by a younger worker (maybe a high school kid) who asked me if he could help me with anything. He was very nice. So I pointed to the fish that I wanted and I said yeah, can you tell me how much these fish are? So he said I don't know. So I looked at him and I said wait really? He said "Yes, these fish are kind of high maintenance so I don't know if they are even for sale yet but I can call my boss to find out." I asked him if he could do that and informed him that I already had two of the same kind of fish at home so the maintenance was not an issue. So I waited and then was given this response, "Yeah I just talked to me boss, he said we don't really have a set price for those particular fish, and we couldn't sell you one today even if we wanted to because we'd have to test your water first." I was shocked. I can kind of understand the water test but your a store, why are you going to push away business because of water. What should they care if i have "good water" or not. They are making money off of me. And then I REALLY don't understand how you have something in stock in your store but don't have a "set price." What do prices just get made up on the spot by the boss for certain items? No thank you. I'll take my business elsewhere. It's a shame too because the store is clean and has a lot to offer. read more

This a nice, privately owned pet store. They cater to a customer who wants higher end, more premium products for their pets like grass fed or organic food. Sadly, my cats aren't big fans of high quality food, but we do buy a natural dry food here that they love. They will order in a particular brand for you if you are looking for something they don't stock. They have a small section for birds, but the bird stuff is mostly the same things you would find in a Petco. We had a parakeet and if i was in the store I would sometimes pick up things for him, but I wouldn't make a special trip here just for the bird stuff. We go for cat products. They also seem to carry a lot for amphibians and small furry pets (rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.) but as I don't own these types of animals I haven't really looked at those items. The staff is very friendly and seem fairly knowledgeable about animal care. Great store if you are looking for more rare products, but you won't find the supermarket brands here. read more
