But all it takes is showing up after you've figuratively fallen on your face and you will already have progressed. Even if you sit and watch without participating, making the effort to be there instills a habit in you. You just have to do it, although sometimes that simple act of showing up seems like the hardest. What I really appreciate about the class is how the instructor, Charles, seems to tailor how he handles each student according to what they might be able to handle. He's big on "manageable steps" so you're only pushed outside of your comfort zone if he thinks you can handle it. If you can only introduce yourself, then that's all you do until you're ready to move on. If you're an actor who wants to focus on scene study, then you can work on material with a partner and perform the scene in each class with the option of participating in a showcase. Or you can do improv (my fav!). Everything is tailored to you as an individual and I think that's so important. I've met some great people and everyone is very supportive. Cons: To see progress, you have to commit. Ok I lied, that's not really a con :D Just get it over it. If you searched for acting classes, then you want to go. You just need to push yourself to show up!

However, I found the teacher's approach to performance anxiety rather formulaic and ineffective. In the first class, you will introduce yourself and answer questions. The next class or few classes, you will do improv. Then, at the teacher's leisure (and your expense), he will give you a scripted scene to work on. He is very lackadaisical about assigning scenes, and he typecasts regularly. The Irish student repeatedly gets the alcoholic roles, the black man gets angry male roles, the basketball player plays a basketball player, and so on. If you're a woman, I advise to pick your own scenes lest you want to be limited to relationship scenes with one-dimensional roles while watching your male classmates continually play interesting, developed characters. While he pays lip service to choice and comfort in the class, the teacher's approach is that of a dogmatic director who should not be questioned rather than that of supportive teacher. When you express discomfort with a scene or lack of understanding at his direction, he becomes rigid and confrontational and treats you as though you're being difficult and argumentative for not simply nodding in agreement. For this reason, despite his holding the class out as a safe space for people with anxiety, I would not recommend the class for overcoming stage-fright. He seemed to forget that, unlike a professional acting gig, we're paying him for a service rather than the other way around. The class does not provide any lessons on the basics of acting. When the teacher gives you a scene, he provides no instruction at all. You can labor over a scene for several weeks without direction only to have him tell you right as you're about to present your scene that your approach is completely wrong. When he does give instruction, it is vague. One time when I tried to apply his direction during the following class, he argued that I was wrong and that he had never given me such an instruction; notably, he did not bother to clear up the confusion by clarifying what his instruction had been. Several times he told me to "just read" the lines, but when I did so it would lead to frustration because what he meant was to read flatly, ignoring punctuation and emphasis, which is not how I normally read. He was resistant and cold when I would I try to approach him at the end of the class to get clarification on his feedback. I left the class completely frustrated and more confused than ever about how to act. And while other students seemed pleased with the class, I noticed that they received the same criticism class after class as they struggled to put his vague instructions into practice. If someone expressed the difficulty of trying to apply his advice, rather than provide helping words or exercises, he would say, "that's acting." Yes, we know what is acting. How about explaining how to do it? His strongest suit is, when you have finally gotten to fully act out a scene, advising you on how to make small changes in body language, pacing, and prop usage to be more convincing. Consequently, I would recommend this class to those who are already comfortable with their acting skills and want simply to get feedback on fine-tuning scenes.

Generally, the studio seems like a nice neighborhood dance studio for kids who like dance as a hobby. My instructor teaches a preteen ballet class before jazz, and the students seem nice and happy. I've met the owner, and I haven't seen her teach, but she did seem friendly and dedicated. Mostly, I wanted to alert people to the existence of the jazz class. Bill is a great teacher: he takes your development seriously, but creates an environment in which you're comfortable trying new things. And he has some great stories. The class itself is a good workout, and for combinations, Bill's choreography is accessible, but really stylish, so beginners can learn the same things as everyone else and look cool, and advanced students can push to get the lines and pacing exactly right and feel challenged while still having fun. The class size thus far has been TINY, so you have room to move, and you don't feel weird asking questions.

This way, they have enough space to have a plethora or vendors and performances without being too crowded. There are also real bathrooms. In later years it's been a little bit all over the place. Admission... suggested $5 or $10, but i noticed some express passes on the festival site for $13 a day, lol. The schedules of performances are more of suggestions. I performed there over a decade ago, and the same issues persist. The kinks should be worked out by now. There are always tons of vendors with clothing, accessories, shoes, jewelry, housewares, food, desserts, etc. and 99% of it is of the Diaspora. Bring cash, not all vendors take cards. There are ATMs, but it's the shady kind. Today, I found a beautiful fan from the Gambia and sandals from Congo. The food selection is always a fish sandwich and Pineapple Lemon Iced Tea from Chef Ed (formerly Chef Amin). Still pretty good.

Unfortunately the event has changed for the worst instead of the better. First off the event entrance fee has always been a voluntary donation. However when I attended with my niece yesterday the woman at the gate went off on her when she said that she had no change. This unidentified woman who was holding a fist full of cash told my niece that she need to support her own and compared the festival donation to the fee you would pay to enter Disney world. LOL. Clearly this grassless park in the middle of Brooklyn in no way can be compared to going to Disney world. Also, the donation has always been VOLUNTARY and covers nothing within the park. Once you enter the park you have to pay for all the services you receive. So it's pretty ignorant to compare this event in anyway to something like Disney world LOL! Secondly, all company's requesting donations are required to disclose how the donated money will be used. The money at the gate is being stuffed into an unmarked barrel and the website nor any of the signage in the park discloses this information. Also, some NOT ALL of the companies with in the festival can be just as rude. For example, I attempted asking a question about the food being served at a vendor called King Halal and just received a blank stare and attitude in response. Against my judgement I stayed in line and ordered a $17.00 meal that was the worst food I have tasted in a longtime! The collard greens needed to be washed because every bite was watery and grainy. The fish smelled and the macaroni was full of some cheese that was not cheddar. This is why events like this don't make it and can't maintain the communities support! Later on my niece and I went to a Thai restaurant and received courteous service and deliciously prepared food. We had planned to go to the festival for more than one day but after that I couldn't and wouldn't support the event again in the future.

Clothing, accessories, you name it and individuals are making some of the coolest merchandise that I like to call "wearable art". Well, we saw some of the most gorgeous things that one can put on and use last Sunday afternoon during an event at Kumble Theater. Kumble Theater is located on Long Island University's Downtown Brooklyn Campus. Easily accessible via mass transit, before you know it you are walking down the block, through the gate and passing by the security guard station all in a matter of minutes to get into the theater. Kumble Theater consists of a Black Box Theater, Dance Studios and "The Humanities Gallery"- a glass enclosed art gallery that is used for art exhibitions. In my opinion, it is a nice and somewhat cozy space (around 300-350 seats) in which to view performances. Comfort is key and their cushioned seats are comfortable. We attended "Gifts of Gathering-28th Annual Coat Show & Market Sale" Marvelously displayed items were for sale (clothing, jewelry, etc.) in the lobby portion of the theater area. Tribal Truths Collection w/ Fashion Designer Brenda Brunson-Bey partnered w/ Kumble Theater to have this event that included her Coat Fashion Show. Guest designers from companies Edgewear Designs (Afrocentric/Denim line) and Ashanti Fields Menswear (Afrocentric inspired) also showcased their clothing. Fantastic Fashion show! Clothing w/ vibrant, bold colors, spectacular designs, band playing live drums and other instruments while models walked, etc...you name it and it was in that fashion show. Kudos to all of the models that brought their vivacious and positive energy! Kumble Theater has lots of other shows throughout the year...look forward to seeing what events they will have in 2019!

This is my second time performing in this venue. Now the space itself could use some renovations as it appears antiquated and could use a make-over. Nonetheless, you will be excited to see what the theatre has to offer regards to the talent that comes here.
