This was my first time at Brooklyn Heights Oral Surgery and I was paying them a visit to address a long overdue tooth extraction based on having an unfixable tooth that was initially believed to be in need of a root canal. I was being patient with the original scheduling from a different provider since it was not painful at the time. Then it was and in force so something needed to be done. Found my insurance was taken by BHOS and made an appointment only days after calling. They are a convenient ride via Mass Transit R, A, 4, 5, 2, and 3 and since this is a bustling area I do not recommend that you drive there. Take an Uber home if you must but don't drive down here. Once some paperwork was filled out I was in the chair and greeted by Sophia the dental assistant and Doctor Ramsa who was cordial and friendly about the process. He did some quick x-rays to see what we were dealing with and advised that the standard numbing would likely suffice as opposed to being put under. Once that stuff did its trick it was time for this painful tooth to be gone and I don't think it even took five minutes for the doctor to get it out. Now with such a removal they recommend an implant but right now I am not there financially for such a process so that will have to wait. On the upside this removal required no additional work like stitches and they just pack in the gauze to help the area clot as it heals. One is advised to take it easy for the remainder of the day and only eat a warm soup or have some juice a few hours later. Nothing that really involves chewing and its also pretty good to adopt a vow of silence for a few hours as well. Overall this was a positive visit and while I noticed some complaints about the front desk reception area, I was not treated badly at all by this part of the office. Perhaps they were approached with attitude and justifiably received some back but again it wasn't my experience. Closing up I must stress that if you find yourself waiting endlessly on an appointment from your provider for something on the critical side find another covered provider to get it done. read more

The front desk staff is very unprofessional, incompetent, useless and rude. The DAY BEFORE- LESS THAN 24HRS before my scheduled procedure, I was told my insurance would not cover the procedure & I would need to pay $3000 out of pocket. At no point did the staff or doctor attempt to appeal the insurance decision, deeming the procedure medically necessary. I guess because I was medicaid patient they could careless, no one even followed up. I would not return if my teeth were falling out & this was only place on Earth! read more

I had my back tooth with infection extracted by Dr. Romsa. He reviewed my xray and medical record and then explained what would happen. The extraction was done efficiently and painlessly. I was then given a sheet of paper with instructions for post extraction care. A few hours after I returned home and numbness was gone, Dr Romsa called me and asked my condition and let me ask him questions and told me to call office if there were any problems. Rude, condescending and impatient receptionist. Left me feeling embarrassed for calling and trying to make an appointment for oh.. I don't know.. my oral health. I understand they are busy and have many appointments to schedule, but the person I spoke with kept cutting me off and ultimately said I had to call my insurance for more information. Dr. Gefon was amazing! I refused to go to any other oral surgeon after my consultation in 2019 for my wisdom tooth extraction and switched insurance this yr (after the pandemic) to be sure of it because he was so overly knowledgeable about the procedure and answered all of my questions. In all I've waited 3yrs technically for this procedure. The only reason I will give 3 stars is because the receptionists was EXTREMELY RUDE! She never ran my new insurance when I gave her my information and when I got to the office 4 weeks later I had to reschedule for a future date TWO MONTHS LATER due to her lack of efficiency, she never apologized for her mistake. If it weren't for the sole reason that I felt comfortable with Dr. Gefon and I chose him as the person to do my procedure I would have never went back. read more

I have terrible anxiety about dental stuff -- the front desk staff was super friendly and talkative to me while I waited, and very helpful. Dr. Gefon is amazing, great bedside manner, casual, super nice and will walk you through everything. I requested an appointment on a Thursday afternoon and was in Tuesday morning. 90 min total in and out. Everything was super fast and well done. read more

Read Yelp & Google reviews but thought I could work through the reports of rude front desk personnel in favor of the reviews of seemingly competent oral surgeons. Based on those reviews, I tried to get an appt with Dr. Gefon for my brother (who has some cognitive challenges) whom I care for and am his health proxy. Unfortunately, Dr Gefon does not work on Fridays. My brother was scheduled with Dr. Romsa. My brother was referred for quite a few extractions and was incredibly nervous. He was accompanied by his nurse aide. Dr. Romsa entered and re-entered the room without an introduction or a smile. I asked to speak with him via brother's cell phone to talk about my brother's nervousness in hopes that the Dr. would help to calm him with a warm introduction. I also wanted to know what would be the plan for the day. Dr. Romsa was very rude and dismissive and brusquely demanded to know my brother's medical conditions ("None" as the completed paperwork attested) and to know why he could not speak for himself (from a professional who refused to use any introductory or cordial words). Were we too brown? The "Good" Dr. left the room rudely and abruptly and promptly went to work on the next patient - whereupon I quickly decided that no one who presented themselves with such unprovoked antagonism would be yanking several teeth out of my beloved's head. The office staff were the least of my worries and proved to be ok once you showed them overt kindness first. A waste of a planned day but very glad about our decision to pass on this doctor/ this place. *My brother who doesn't speak much and NEVER speaks ill of people confirmed that decision : "the reason why we didn't "let him take out (my) teeth was that he was very mean". Added note: As answered on check-in paperwork, My brother has no "medical" conditions and is in very good to outstanding medical health. He is kind/ mild-mannered and follows directions when they are clearly provided. The doctor's rudeness and refusal to have a clarifying discussion had nothing to do with concern for patient's safety. read more

Tokar and staff are unprofessional. Went there January 17 to consult about an infected root canal + implant and dropped off a 3-D scan done by my endodontist; three weeks passed with no communication, despite weekly calls to determine what he saw on the scan. Office manager Michele gave me several conflicting (and snippy) answers about what happened with the scan, so on March 12 went in again. Told Tokar about the three weeks of unanswered calls; he apologized, promised he'd call after he looked at the scan, said the problem was he couldn't open it (info he could've given me over the phone, and different info from what Michele had told me - I think she lost the scan and had to contact the endodontist's office for another). It's now April 23 and still no call. I've since gone somewhere else. AVOID. read more

From being to end, I had a great experience. The staff was so friendly and made me feel at ease. And the office was very clean. I had to have a wisdom tooth extracted and Dr. Romsa did a fantastic job. I felt no pain during the procedure - he was quick and efficient. I had a little pain afterwards, which is expected. I wish I knew about them a few years ago when my daughter needed a tooth extraction. I also wish they performed routine dental work. If ever I need major dental work, I know where to go. I am in excruciating pain 3 days after oral surgery : ( I chose this Oral Surgery office because it was in network under my insurance. I contacted the office and made them aware that my dentist advised me to take out my two remaining wisdom teeth due to cavities. I made an appt and had a consultation with Dr.Gefon. He was very informative and answered my questions. I went to the receptionist in the front to schedule an appt and they gave me a date but said they could not give me a time I have to wait until a day before someone will call me with a time which seemed backwards to me. I called two days before to see if they had a time for my appt I was told someone would call me the following day with a time and they did. Fast forward to the day I took out my teeth. I reminded Dr. Gefon I wanted IV sedation. I asked him to talk me through what was being done. He put the needle in my arm and then took it out left a plastic piece and then he put the IV and I was out when I woke up his dental assistant escorted me to another room until I was completely alert. They gave me instructions and gauze. I was not prescribed pain killers or antibiotics. I was not given a date to follow up with oral surgeon and a piece of flesh or stitches is hanging off my gums after 2 days in the back of my mouth and now I have to call the dentist to inquire if it is stitches and possibly go in to see him. They could have done a better job at explaining the after care, and an appt should have been scheduled to see him again, and I should have been subscribed pain killers thank God I had my own at home. The waiting room only has two seats. The room set up seemed to be clean and presentable. I called and scheduled a follow up visit 3 days after I pulled my 2 wisdom teeth. They sent me to the Sheephead Bay Oral Surgery office. Beautiful office and the receptionist their were very busy. Dr. Gefon had to send antibiotics and Tylenol with codeine because he forgot to call it in on Tuesday when I had oral Surgery. I took 3 days off work had no antibiotics in my system with a swollen neck and chin. I did tell the receptionist at Brooklyn Heights Oral Surgery on Wednesday after I pulled my teeth out that the doctor did not give me pain killers I did not know I needed antibiotics. Overall they need to improve with their communication. read more

Dr. Tokar provided exceptional care. I was nervous to see a dental surgeon about a wisdom tooth extraction. I assumed that they always recommend extraction - it's a business after all. Dr. Tokar was very thorough and took his time when evaluating me, speaking to me about his findings, and presenting me with options. He recommended no extraction! Contactless payment did not happen. I assume they don't have a credit card machine that the patient can use independently because payment is made at reception. There was no temp check performed upon entry to the office. All other medical offices do temp checks when you walk in. The reception staff were not wearing masks. They have patients sign a doc indicating that you understand you are at risk simply by entering a dentist's office. There are also signs indicating that all precautions are being take so perhaps steps other than temperature taking, contactless payment , and mask wearing are being performed. Absolutely incompetent. Ridiculously long waits, tried to schedule a surgery for four months, only to find out that the office hadn't even put the paperwork to start it, finally scheduled surgery and surgeon tells me that I don't even need to get surgery anymore. Then when he seems me getting frustrated because it's difficult for me to take a whole day off of work, tries to blame it on me and says we never scheduled surgery (completely false). Actual worst experience(s) of my life. Gossipy and incompetent staff, rude surgeon (who came 30 minutes late to work), do not recommend. read more

I'm glad that somehow decided on seeing Oral Surgeon Dr. Thomas Santomauro; whom my dentist Dr. Warshaw of Park Slope family dentistry referred me to. I had procrastinated having a tooth extraction, because a part of me knew the tooth would break because of decay.. it turned out to be more of an invasive surgery as opposed to a tooth extraction.. and I'm grateful to have been in this expert's skilled hands, he was also patient and attentive, good listener.. he gave me a hypo-allergenic anesthetic, after me telling him that I had a reaction at last dentist visit. All went well. His assistant was new; the experience would have called for 5 stars had that aspect of overall procedure were different. read more
