They have sweet, savory, egg & veggie kolaches. All baked fresh! The beef sausage had a piggy in a blanket feel while the strawberry rhubarb was sweet and summery. Also loved the ube syrup in my coffee! That's something you definitely do not see everyday. Having kolaches here was actually my first encounter with Bed Stuy from even before moving to New York, so I knew that I had to come back now that I live here. Unfortunately because of the pandemic their outdoor garden, which sits very fondly in my memories, is closed, though they have two tables out front if you're lucky enough to snag a spot. We were, since many people who came to order were pickup and go and a table left just as we ordered. I tried their seasonal savory special, the bbq chicken, as well as the blueberry sweet cheese because it's a classic. My friend got the sausage and cheese and the spinach and feta. You can also ask for one (or both!) of the two sauces that come with when you pick up at the window. Ordering process is pretty seamless; you go to the right window to order and the left to pickup and everything is written in chalk on the menu at the door. If you get there too late in the day, though, you'll start to see things get crossed off. That was our fate with the sausage, cheese, and jalapeño, and I think I got the last blueberry of the day. I really liked both flavors I got. Bbq chicken was flavored well, if a bit dry. The sweetness of the cream cheese balanced the tartness of the blueberry and the confectioners sugar dusted pastry really well and that was my favorite. Most people outside of Midwest / South (#1) are generally unfamiliar with kolaches, but thanks to Brooklyn Kolache they've made their way to NYC and a name for themselves in the process. Just when I had given up on the notion of finding (almost) everything in NYC, Brooklyn Kolache has thankfully proven me wrong. And the kolaches themselves? In a word, excellent. Their little cafe is perfectly Brooklyn: small and quaint, with a hipster vibe and a lot of community love. It is an ideal spot for a good book / laptop action and a quality caffeinated beverage. They have a cute outdoor setup as well, fun decor, and up until last year, would host everything from live music to poetry. Where does one even begin with their variety of kolaches? The majority of them are more akin to the delicate pastries of their Czech / Central European roots, more so than the meat bun, oversized pigs in a blanket a la Shipley's of Texas variety. Both the sweet and savory batches have a flakiness and airiness that is a testament to the high quality ingredients that they use. Most of the sweet kolaches run for about $3.50. I am a sucker for the poppyseed, PB&J, candied pecan, and blueberry sweet cheese kolaches. The pricier savory ones are in the $4.50-4.75 range and my favorites include their ham and cheddar, bacon egg & cheese, jalapeno sausage and cheese, and even the spinach and feta. The only one I could spot without cheese was the regular Texas beef sausage, which was juicy and wonderful fresh out of the oven. I also have to give props to their coffee, which is via Kitten Coffee (#2) and the overall lineup of drinks. That iced macadamia milk matcha latte is killer and I love that they offer ube milk. While I've always enjoyed their arnold palmer on a hot summer day, I also have been impressed with their laura palmer (lemonade and hibiscus tea) as well. While visiting our kids they wanted us to try Brooklyn Kolache. Our kids growing up in Houston , kolaches are a staple. My daughter has missed having them and found this place , it's a bit of a trek for her coming from the lower east side. But she likes it and fulfills her craving. The staff is kind and friendly. There is seating inside and on the outside back deck which was nice. They were super busy when we came, and we ordered quite a bit of kolaches to try them out. I have to say these are not the kolaches we are used to, the bread flavor is not what we consider the right sweetness or texture. The sausage they use also is a totally different flavor profile. The sweet ones (fruit) are good. Their coffee drinks are good as well. I really struggled about how I was going to rate my experience and the kolaches. The Houston style beef kolache did not taste like any kind of beef kolache I have ever had in the 20 yrs I've lived in Houston. Because to me these are not kolaches as I know them. YUMMMMYYYYY kolaches!! 5/5 and cannot wait to go back and sit in their garden patio that I had just missed because they close it off a little early. I got their mushroom + goat cheese and spinach + feta kolache and a Ute latte which I had never heard of before, all three things were amazing! This coffee shop features breads stuffed with various things and some of the nicest folks in the neighborhood. Who doesn't like sweet and savory stuffed breads. A quick Wikipedia search schooled me that these Kolache are of Czech and Slavic origin and that the meat filled ones emerged by Czech expats in Texas. So there you go. Beyond that you have a rather low key and basic coffee shop. There is space to sit up front in the back and in the garden. I have often scheduled meetings here and have always been able to find a seat. I think you can tell a lot about a cafe by the staff and the state of their bathrooms. The staff are just sweethearts. Always very nice which is likely a good reflection of the owners/managers. They are a bit understaffed at times though. I have coming during the day to find the place staffed by one person who had disappeared into the kitchen somewhere leaving the front counter area empty. The bathroom while plain is also revealing. The mirror in there has been vandalized with childish graffiti etchings. It either makes me feel the neighborhood doesn't respect itself or doesn't respect the business for some reason. Considering how nice the staff seems, I am guessing it is the former. I also get the sense they are not so flush with cash that they can afford to replace the mirror. So go buy some Kolache and get that mirror replaced! read more

The vibe of this place is a quick casual spot/cafe to relax, snack and meet up for coffee. I stopped by about an hour or so before closing so they were out of many options (no meat kolache left) and the outdoor backyard space was closed. The decor is super welcoming and cozy and gives a ton of natural light. Tried a few things but the menu is straightforward, with like 4 kolache options (sweet, meat, vegetarian, etc). Though Kolaches can be loved just for being a delicious pastry alone, knowing the history gave me a deeper appreciation for these donut-like confections. They were popularized in Texas by way of large scale Czech immigration in the 1800s, and the has been adapted over the years in Texas. This bakery is bringing these Texas-style Kolaches to Brooklyn and I owe them for both edifying me and satisfying my intense sweet tooth. Win-win! The pastry case features a mix of savory and sweet Kolaches, with flavors like egg & sausage or apricot & poppy seed. They're ever popular on weekend mornings but I got lucky and snagged the last cherry sweet cheese and another with spinach & feta. Both were equally delightful and tasted like the fluffiest donuts with the freshest ingredients. They reminded me a bit of Sufganiyot, a Hannukah pastry from Israel I recently tried for the first time. Those are only available once a year while Kolaches can be found year round. This was my first Kolache experience, and overall I would say I was content. We ordered 3 different types: sweet cherry and cheese, jalapeño sausage, and smoked ham with cheddar. I enjoyed the sweet cherry and cheese the best, it reminded me of a sugar coated jelly donut! I found the ham in the savory Kolache to be a bit tough to chew. The set up is also nice and quaint. There are tables in the back to set up your laptop to do work, and an outdoor patio for when the weather is nice. Overall this place is a solid 3 stars! read more

As a Texan, this place is a dream come true. I thought I would be missing kolaches when I moved out to Brooklyn, but Brooklyn Kolache Co has come in and filled that void for me - and helped me miss home just a little less. For those uninitiated, a kolache is a Czech/Texan pastry that is often eaten for breakfast, that can be both sweet or savory. Brooklyn Kolache Co puts out kolaches that can hang with the best of the ones I've had in Texas! My personal favorite is the jalapeno, sausage, and cheese - slightly spicy sausage mixed with the slightly sweet fluffy bread on the outside is a perfect match. They make a solid cold brew here as well (you can actually buy howlers/growlers to go). The space is very cozy too - tables in the back area if you want to get work done with free wifi, and a small outdoor space that's nice to get some sun when the weather's nice. Another huge plus on this place is that they have Topo Chico! This is a rarity in NYC, although the stuff can be found in any grocery store in Texas. Every culture has their own version (at least one) of carbs wrapped around meat, because that's basically the best combination you can have. Not only is it delicious, but it's usually portable and fairly tidy: The Indians have samosas, the Italians have calzones, the Mexicans have tacos (and burritos, I suppose), Asians all have their own types of dumplings, the Latin Americans have empanadas, the Caribbeans have doubles and beef patties and so on and so forth. The Texans, like true Americans, appropriated theirs from another culture (the Czech) and made it their own, and now they have the kolache. Having spent more time than I care to in Houston, I've determined the kolache to be one of the only redeeming qualities of that sweaty strip mall of a city. And thanks to the Brooklyn Kolache Co., I no longer have to go there to get my fix. This spare, airy shop on DeKalb is serving up these slightly sweet, deliciousness-filled pastries, and they are serving them well. They do seem to sell out quick though; by the time I rolled in at 3:30 or so, the nice lady running the joint informed me that they were out of everything savory except the chorizo, egg & cheese ($3.25) and the smoked beef sausage ($2.75). I took one of each, and sat down to stuff my face. The place itself is surprisingly big, and even has a nice backyard (someday, if the SLA cooperates, I hope to drink beer and eat kolaches out there). The ceilings are high, and most importantly the kolaches are fluffy, filling and GOOD. There really aren't many tastier, more affordable snacks around. They might not be as cheap as in Texas, but two of these is more than enough for a meal, and I'll be back soon and often to try the other options. P.S. They say that if you've been to college, you're somewhat "collagey." And that if you love "Rock The Casbah" and "London Calling", you're sort of "Clashey." So I guess if you're a stuffed pastry from Texas, then you're "Kolache." I don't really get Kolaches. They're all over Houston and wildly popular but they do nothing for me. However, Brooklyn Kolache does them well, and whereas in TX it's overkill, in NYC it's unusual and unique and deserves investigation and attention to see if you like them as much as all my exs (who live in Texas) do. In any case, as far as Kolaches go (pronounced COAL AH CHEE), this Kolache is pretty good, but more satisfyingly, the limeade was excellent. I'd come back here for the limeade but I guess you have to be Texan or Czech (or perhaps both) to get Kolaches. Or maybe if you adore all forms of pastries. I'm pretty picky about my bread and my pastry. It takes quite a lot to impress me. But the Bro Ko Co, they can definitely have a 5 star rating for originality, decent price, and lovely service. Their lavender honey latte is delicious! It has some light notes of lavender without it being over powering. The barista was super nice and accommodating when I asked for decaf. My husband and I both loved their 'morning' latte with oat milk. I seriously thought that I had to have this every morning. Wow, this place gets 5 stars alone just on the strength of the Peanut Butter Chocolate Kolache. In case you don't know, a Kolache is kind of like a sweet pastry filled with different kinds of good stuff, both sweet and savory. The ones here all cost $3, and most are pretty similar, with some slight variations in which one or two ingredients are tweaked. I know I often have a major tendency toward sweet over savory, but I really think the sweet options here are way better, and are all incredible. To get the only slightly negative out of the way, we tried the Smoked Beef Sausage Kolache, which was a little nauseating for me - it felt a little like a mystery meaty type of hot dog, so I passed on that after a few bites. If you like hot dogs and/or this type of meat though, you would probably enjoy this. Now onto the goodness - we got the Peanut Butter & Chocolate and Peanut Butter & Jam Kolaches (yeah, I guess I really like peanut butter). We were just going to get the Peanut Butter & Jam, but the lady told us that the ones with chocolate JUST came out of the oven, so we couldn't resist. Wow - just look at my photos to witness the goodness. The genius combo of peanut butter and chocolate, all gooey and melted together inside the hot bread is one of the greatest tastes you can imagine. Not only were these delicious, but the employees were also all super friendly and very helpful to answer any questions (e.g. what the hell is a Kolache?) and to offer up some nice (welcome or not) chit chat. Off of this menu I was really excited to see an ube flavored coffee and it did not disappoint! Reminded me of ube flavored ice cream. A cute place in Franklin Ave, Brooklyn Kolache is a hidden gem. The place was small but offered a variety of interesting kolaches and interesting drinks. The decor of the café was simple and cozy. There were small tables by the store-front seating area and a long counter with tall stools along the side. Never had a Kolache before, I was very eager to try. I ordered a Chilli Dog Kolache and a regular-sized seasonal Orange Zest Mocha. The total amounted to $10. The kolache came warmed up. It was a lot bigger and heftier than I initially expected! One kolache definitely served as a meal for me. The kolache was filled with spicy, salty minced beef and hotdogs. The slightly sweet dough of the kolache balanced out the salitiness of this filling. The Orange Zest Mocha was a nice surprise. Already a fan of Mochas, I wasn't expecting anything out of the ordinary. However, the presence of the Orange Zest was surprisingly very strong; actual orange zest was used rather than its essence. I recently visited for the first time and was excited they were open for contactless pickup during COVID-19. I have always been interested in trying a Texas-Czech Kolache (as I've had the Polish Kolache dessert in past) and it was absolutely amazing! I tried the blueberry sweet cream Kolache as well as their cold brew coffee. I loved the Kolache, the pastry piece was soft, fluffy and clearly freshly baked, plus the filling was flavorful without being overly sweet. There are so many great flavors I hope to be back to try more soon. I would certainly like to try the poppyseed flavor. Their coffee is also really good and their staff is friendly.
