I've had three appointments in the Brooklyn office with Dr. Englebert within the last three months…read more He took over for my prior doctor there, Dr. Cooney. My first visit was for a follow up from a cellulitis eye condition treated at NYU hospital. While Dr. Cooney had been direct and down to earth, Dr. Englebert was astonishingly arrogant. Second visit was for a swollen eye and chalazion. Dr. Englebert was again quite self-impressed, gave me two antibiotics, no biggie. No follow up appointment was suggested. Few weeks passed and my eye got worse, I called the Manhattan office. They said Brooklyn should have scheduled a follow up. I made a new appointment. I get an on-line form asking me to agree to pay for a pending procedure not covered by my insurance. The procedure was never offered to me and I was told by staff they don't do that procedure. Billing - they had me pay my full Medicare and co- insurance deductibles directly to them. I'm sure there was something wrong there that will be a paperwork nightmare for me to straighten out. After waiting two and a half hours I finally saw Dr Englebert who seemed to have no recollection of me as an on-going patient. He spent maybe five minutes with me and referred me to a plastic surgeon for chalazion removal telling me the recovery would be problematic. No discussion of alternatives, no discussion on anything. His nurse/assistant was helpful once he left the room. So my review - Dr Englebert may be a great doctor. He certainly seems to think so but I really don't know. I can tell you that he's quite self-impressed, not too interested in discussing anything, severely overbooked, and quick to refer out. I can't recommend him or not recommend him but decided to go elsewhere for a basic straightforward second opinion before having the plastic surgery he recommended on my eye. One minor point, when an Opthamologist recommends a plastic surgeon, he might want to actually engage in a conversation as to why, what other options may or may not be available, and provide more than a minute discussing it within a five minute visit. An astonishingly rude and nasty front desk woman who handles their billing would only accept credit cards, no cash payment, and blew me away with her inability to add or subtract. So, if you're looking for an Opthamologist with a good medical reputation, who happens to have the bedside manner of a trout, and offers a verbally aggressive mathematically inept front desk, this could be the place for you. They do extensive comprehensive vision testing and are reputedly well received for those services. My second opinion was at Mt. Sinai Opthamologist services where they recommended a steroid treatment followed by waiting time for my eye to heal before going for the plastic surgery. Following Mt. Sinai's treatment plan my eye is now about 95 percent healed and the recommended plastic surgery unnecessary.

You'll spend two to three hours there minimum. No matter what time of day you book. I've been many…read moretimes (this one likely to be my last -- a colleague recommended another place nearby) and tried booking first thing, midday, end of day... same thing regardless. Basically you check in and then wait about 40 minutes, then get called by a technician. Spend five minutes getting a test then back to the waiting room. Another 15 or 30 minutes and another technician calls you. And so on. Then you wait for the doctor. The staff all seem capable and professional and most are pleasant. (However there is one woman who deserves special mention for being so rude. I think even she suspected she crossed the line and tried to mumble something at the end of my two minute test.) Try as they might to be fine on the individual basis, it's a factory assembly line and you will feel like you're a process not a person. I also don't appreciate that after all that and all that time I don't have a prescription, just a check on the bigger issues. So... good capable people and a big practice and I guess the sense that if it takes 2-3 hours for a regular non-emergency eye check they're on schedule.

After the…read moredoctor's visit, I went to the receptionist desk to request the clinical notes for the visit, and told it can't be done, because it was not ready, and to call back and request it over the phone. It is August, the receptionist did not identify who she was. I told her the request to be sent via mail or email my clinical notes and test records, since it was not ready then. She was the most rudest person with such an abrasive combative attitude. Talk about winning the trophy for having ZERO etiquette and professionalism in customer service. Even the manner in which was said, she don't know who the receptionist was. I immediately sense this was going to be a combative zone talking with her. She told me in the most aggressive tone, the waiver release was not signed to obtain the notes to be sent. I told her, I was there and given all the paperwork needed for the visit and release forms. She told me, "no you didn't". Just asking a question felt like an unnecessary confrontational. I kept my cool and monotone in my voice. But, you can feel the negative vibe brewing with her. I'm from New York and don't tolerate this. On the phone or online, acting tough just shows your insecurities, power-trip desire ego, and sadness in life. I told her, when I was there that day, I requested the clinical notes and records, the receptionist told me it wasn't ready to be printed, and she was the one who gave me all the paperwork to sign. If I didn't sign it, she would have inform me that I needed to sign another in order to release the notes and records to me, for when I call over the phone. At the end, after dealing with her nasty azz attitude, she told me, she need to ask the doctor later this week, if he can give permission to release the clinical notes to be sent to me. In person, the staff were professional and ran the place smoothly with no issue. I assumed they gave all the paperwork to sign to release the records. On the phone, it felt like a slugfest boxing match with words. In other words, they lied giving song and dance with a punch to not send the clinical notes when requested, since they don't give it right away, saying you have to call at a later time. Only to deal with this wackjob. Doctors are competent, office staff for in-person were adequate. But this woman, she needs to be replaced for someone who knows the decorum for customer service, to talk to patients over the phone.

My appointment was at 9:15am and it is now 12:30pm with no end in sight. They told me to expect a 2-3 hour wait but when the appointment verges into 4 hours, it is not worth a New Yorker's time. The waiting room was full of retired older people so they may have the time to wait but for people who have jobs and kids, give this a skip!
