I had retinal detachment while away from home on a business trip but had the great fortune of being referred to Dr. Khadem who saw me as soon as I returned to New York. Now, after 17 months of his care in several procedures, my sight has returned completely. Through this entire journey, he was kind and patient, explaining what needed to be done, and what to expect during recovery. It was because of this and his very competent skills that I can see again. I couldn't be more grateful for what he has given me. After I waited over 2 hours Dr K immediately wanted to sell me red light treatment that was not the issue I was seeing him for, is thousands of dollars , and might "help" after 2 years? Since it was not the reason I was there for, which was a tear in the other eye, I have not idea why he was selling me on this. Dr Khadem saved my sight . I absolutely love him and all the staff here . Been going for about 12 years now . I had an accident ( a hole in my retina ) after I hit my head in a car door . 9 weeks later could only see 3 fingers out of my right eye . I Was referred to him and told I needed surgery (virtrectomy) right away . If you don't know this is what's called "face down surgery ". Google it . I was terrified but his calm demeanor and explaining of what I needed and why helped . His bedside manner is great and he answers any questions I have . My retina was repaired, but this type of surgery can cause other issues, so I go regularly to ensure all is stable with my retina. Yes the wait time is horrendous . There are several other doctors in the same space and it gets crowded . I know the prevailing logic is "my time should be respected" and if this is you pass and go somewhere else . But for me, I plan my day accordingly and yes I do get annoyed waiting but I have at least 3 tests ( including the imaging with the dye to see the back of the retina) that I will continue to wait . Average wait time can be 2-3 hrs. Govern yourselves accordingly . read more

I rated my ophthalmologist on the Yelp application..., If you want to spend a half day in a waiting room waiting for service at the convenience of the staff, then this is the practice for you ! On my initial visit, I spent four hours there for a total of 20 minutes of service time. I then went for a procedure with Doctor Khadem near a Penn station office that was not totally clean and was standing room only. I spent a lot of time there waiting for a 10 minute procedure. I was then invited back for a post procedure follow up. After two hours, they had hardly done anything with me so I stood up and pointed to the sign that says "respect matters" because they probably get a lot of patients that scream at the receptionist over the poor handling of patients. I pointed to the sign and said "well respect also matters with how you treat your patients" and left. A big thumbs down on this practice. read more

The approach and knowledge provided to me and other patients of extraordinary. I recommend this group to anyone. Avoid this practice. They have absolutely no processes in procedures. After going through all the tests and receiving an initial diagnosis and an appointment to have eye surgery, they completely ghosted me. I'm not sure why, but I left four messages with staff over three weeks prior to my operation so that we could finalize the details of my procedure. The office said that they would inform the doctor, but I never received any phone calls back. I offered to make it an additional appointment so that I could talk to him, but they just said that he would call me. He never did. (BTW I also left several emails, but they leave the email box unattended.) I'm currently trying to get my medical records back from them so I can send them to my new doctor; they say it will take weeks for some reason. I'm hoping I don't have to redo everything. If they're this bad before the operation, God knows what the operations are like. I would avoid this place at all costs. read more

Words can not express how lucky I am to have been referred to Dr Khadem, he's a genius and saved me from an almost certain detachment. An appointment here does take a few hours but it is because they are extremely thorough which is of course what you want if there is an issue with your eyes. Back in late January, I went to my local eye doctor to check out what was going on with my eye and was diagnosed with retina detachment which had my doctor sending me to Dr. Khadem that same day. The office was large and clean, and the staff was polite and courteous. Dr. Khadem was nothing but polite, easy to talk to, and answered all the questions I had. He has a lot of experience and knows what he is doing and while the procedure wasn't pleasant (it involved injection of gas into my eyeball), it's what needed to be done. I type this today thankful that I no longer have any issues with my eye. I was reading the other reviews and the majority of complaints are about the wait. I attest to the fact that this is true. Unfortunately, the wait time for whatever you do here may be 3-4 hours. When I had to do laser, that day I ended up waiting 6 hours. However, to be fair, this doctor is treating and saving your eyes so that they're healthy and that you won't be blind. Surely your eyes are worth the wait? In addition, to be fair, after dilation drops are put in, you have to wait 45 min... so long waits should be expected. In terms of upcharges, the doctor also suggested I do laser treatment on the other eye. Though, the keyword here is "suggested." He explained why he felt that way and given that I'm trusting him, I will move forward with this plan. I hate the wait too but this doctor is definitely the one for me. read more

Dr. Khadem gaslights you and heavily lacks bedside manners, compassion, and time management skills. I visited him a week after the laser procedure he conducted on my retina. I visited him because my vision was still blurry and I was concerned since he had said it would clear up in a few days. After waiting for nearly 3 hours, I explained this to him and he tried to gaslight me by saying he never said three days and I told him he did. So, then he proceeded to make a low key sexist comment about my eye taking longer to heal from the painful laser procedure he conducted at the other location he has stakeholder interest in. The comment was something about women taking longer than men to heal (not sure if that's actually true). My other gripe is that the procedure was fucking awful because it was unnecessarily painful! It was painful because my eye wasn't numbed enough, so it pushed out whatever the fuck he tried to put in my eye without warning (some circular thing that helped keep it open, but he never explained that!) He didn't explain shit about what was going to happen during the laser procedure and only told me to put my forehead and chin on the thing and to grip the table the machine was on. I thought I was sitting down to look into the same machine that optometrists or specialists use to direct light into the eye but instead, WITHOUT WARNING, he starts the laser and it's fucking hurts. I tell him it hurts and he says nothing. I keep telling him it hurts and he then says you're almost done. Then I get a migraine and my blood pressure shoots up because it's all unexpected and almost feels violating. I'm then made to feel like the exception and not the rule. Terrible experience. How do I begin to say how wonderful Dr. Khadem is. He performed my mom's surgery successfully when no one else wanted to do it for her. My mom had a Macular Hole repair and the post-procedural care and precautions were very tedious. He encouraged her, he was so kind, patient and considerate with us. He is just an amazing person. I would refer anyone to Dr. Khadem. I thank him from the bottom of my heart. My mom's vision is way better than mine now ever when wearing my glasses. The staff were pleasant, and worked diligently to get everything covered for mom's surgery. We saw him on a Wednesday and by friday morning he squeezed mom in for surgery and now she's able to enjoy life again. The follow up care was amazing to say the least? He is absolutely the best. I've been seeing Dr. Khadem for several years and highly recommend him. I first visited the office several years ago directly from a nearby emergency room with a torn retina. Another doctor expertly repaired the tear with a laser procedure. Have been seeing Dr. Khadem ever since, including my latest exam today. The wait times are long which, as is easily confirmed on the internet, is standard for a retina exam. The office is always clean and the staff helpful. 3 hour wait is accurate. But that is not why I had a negative experience. Dr. Khadem performed a retina procedure (read: surgery) on me that was entirely medically unnecessary. He told me my left eye needed to be treated for a macular hole as soon as possible, and that the right eye should be done as well. I sensed the urgency in his tone and trusted that he was giving me the best medical advice he had available. After expressing concern about the procedure cost, he assured me that cost would not be an issue with my insurance. The visit and procedure ended up costing me $800. At my eye doctor's advice, I went for a second opinion for the right eye. The new specialist told me that, not only did I did not to have my right eye done, the left eye was entirely medically unnecessary and the small macular hole posed absolutely no risk to me. It didn't hurt that I had the procedure done, with the exception of the $800 it put me out. Dr. Khadem rushed to assume I needed to have expensive eye surgery when in fact I did not. That is a sign of a bad doctor, or possibly even one with bad intentions. The procedure I had done is common among elderly people (I'm 26). I heard him speaking with another young man (college aged) about the same procedure with the same sense of urgency. I should have taken this for the red flag that it was. Lesson learned to not trust medical advice from a person who is rushing you to make important decisions about your body. read more

Dr Khadem was referred to me after I had a very bad experience with another ophthalmologist who messed up my eyes. I had cataracts removed by an unscrupulous dr who basically was in this for the money. I am so very pleased with Dr. Khadem. He saw that I had a detached retina & scar tissue forming from the prior surgery. Dr. Khadem immediately scheduled me for surgery for the following day & it is so successful I feel I no longer need corrective glasses. I cannot express how very pleased I am. I hate coming here. The doctors are nice, the technicians are great, the front desk staff a bit rude but I have never not have to wait three hours at a minimum. Even when I am not getting my eyes dilated. The waiting room is crowded and uncomfortable. Just know you will be here a really long time. Bring snacks and a charger. Clear your calendar. Don't bother coming early because it just extends your wait time. Don't think you will go back to work. Just plan on taking the whole day off. No matter what you come in for. read more

No apologies--their attitude is like it or lump it. Dr. Pieroni is a pleasant, competent doctor. The staff is very courteous! Always polite. The office is clean and tidy. The wait is long but it is because your eyes needs to be dilated and it takes a little time. Doctors are super! Never come here if you can avoid. 1) 3 hour waits even for follow up appointments - they don't even have enough seats for all the patients, ppl have to stand 2) they go through the same process no matter what, sign in and wait 30-45 minutes to do a vision test, then wait another 30-45 minutes to get some scan done, then wait another 45-60 minutes to get 5 minutes with the actual doctor. They are just shuffling you from one room to another to bide time and maximize what they can bill you by running all sorts of tests. I came on a Friday and that following Monday had to come back for a follow up visit, they put me through the same tests as I did on Friday. They didn't even ask if I was better, just absolute disregard for the patient's issue and not to mention time. read more

Not sure why this place has bad yelp reviews going for a retina exam takes at least 2-3 hours. This place was great from start to finish. I have been to other retina places that take a lot longer.. I was called in within 15 minutes of my appointment time. One of the assistants checked my eye sight my eyes were dilated. You have to wait around 45 minutes for your eyes to dilate . As soon as the 45 minutes were up I was called in to take pictures... I then had to wait for the doctor for no more than 5 minutes. I had to do some more tests and I was done in 2 1/2 hours which is amazing for all that. Every person was kind Dr Khadem was great. Retina exams are not like eye exams they take longer. Dr Khadem came highly recommended by my eye doctors.. It is a shame to see these other reviews. Having been to 2 other retina Drs in the city( one died and the other stopped taking my insurance) I like Dr Khadem the best read more

Seeing Dr.John Khadem has been such a wonderful experience. In a very unfortunate situation, he has gone above and beyond to treat my elderly father to the best of his abilities. My father was diagnosed with macular hemorrhage in his only good eye which has caused him to be near blind which has made his day to day extremely difficult. I've been a patient of Dr. Khadem's now for a number of years . After hitting my head in a car door, several weeks later I woke up to only being able to partially see out my right eye. I went to my eye doc and was referred ( the next day) to Dr. Khadem. I was not expecting to hear that in addition to having laser done on both eyes to stabilize my retina, I had a macular hole and would need a virtrectomy almost immediately. This was in 2014. His bedside manner has always been wonderful and he alleviated my fears. Surgery was a success , then again in 2016 ( maybe?) my left eye had of different issue where the vitreous gel was causing a problem and again scheduled again for surgery. To my surprise it resolved itself but I am now a regular patient having to see Dr. Khadem once a year to ensure my progress continues. I appreciate the staff and Dr. Khadem because I have floaters and they always seems to create a level of stress that causes me to always wonder if I will need surgery again. Dr. Khadem each and every time calms me down. What a wonderful place. What a great doctor. Yes the wait ... is ridiculous - but I'd rather have my sight. read more
