I had taken my dog here for years... for grooming, food, and treats. I would 100% strongly recommend against this place now. Without a doubt, one grooming appointment ended with my dog now having a collapsed trachea. Per my vet, the grooming support that goes around her neck caused it. I was not told that an incident had happened. When I picked her up, she had this awful cough and sounded like she was choking. I understand that things happen and given my history with their company, I had plans to try them again and would be talking with the groomer beforehand to find another option to keep my dog safe during her appt. I was unable to get a grooming appt for nearly a month and a half. I placed her/my name on the wait list for cancellations... was never called in this timespan. I'm not dumb, I know people cancelled and I was not called. Today, I get a phone call and they are cancelling my appt that I made a month ago bc the groomer will be out. (Mind you, I've made special accommodations to ensure I can get her to the appt and have someone pick her up for me.) They said the first available is another month from now!!!!! Seriously? You cancelled my appt and aren't making any attempt to "squeeze her in" or place on a so-called "wait list or cancellation list." This is a joke. And the employee complained to me about being stressed out? No apology for the cancellation or the fact that it would be another month!!!! Awful customer service. I will be looking for a new groomer and food provider. Update: review their response below... They did not make an effort to "timely reschedule." In fact, one month was considered "first available"... they made no attempt to get me in sooner. That timeline was the same for anyone making a "new appt" not a cancellation. And wishing my dog a "speedy recovery?" You know tracheal collapse is PERMANENT! She had no signs of an issue before coming into her appt. It's funny that the owner will respond to a yelp review and not a personal email to the shore. Wouldn't want to tarnish their reputation .... And to cancel future appts because of my review... I guess you can't take criticism and responsibility. read more

I moves away from the KC area about a month ago and really miss the Team at Brookside Barkery in Lees Summit! They were always so kind and helpful when I went in to buy food and treats for my 2 doggos and 20 -year old kitty cat. They have great brands of food and other per supplies. I used to get my pups groomed there and they did a great job as well. I am always very picky about what I feed my fur kids and they have awesome supplies to help me with that! I was really torn on how to rate this place. I've bought pet food here a long time. I trust their reputation and when I needed a groomer, decided to make an appointment here. When I called, the employee assured me they could give my dog a "Teddy" cut and brush out the excess fur. I have a golden retriever. When I brought my dog in, the groomer said she would cut my dog's fur only 1-2" and he would still have longer fur on his ears and legs. She described it as a "puppyish" rounded cut, which does describe a Teddy cut. He was also to get a bath and nail trim. I was told I had to pay before I could see my dog, which made me uneasy. The feeling was correct I picked up my dog and he had been bathed, but no nail cut. The cut was not what the groomer promised. My dog was shaved all over, one very short length. Even his hind legs were trimmed so short I could see his skin. It was nowhere near a teddy cut. His fur will not grow in correctly for several months. I'm very disappointed that my dog has been shaved like this, and that the employee lied about their expertise and what would be done. I would advise against grooming services at this location. read more

We have been taking our dogs to the Barkery for several years now and love this place! The groomer has worked with us on my nervous rescue doggos and now they are both much, MUCH better about nail trims and being groomed and bathed! I truly appreciate the extra time it takes to work with dogs that have some history! The staff has always been super friendly and helpful when I needed advice - be it on food or harnesses or treats! We recently moved farther away and I still make the drive, passing multiple other pet stores, just to see our favorite groomer and get the supplies we need for our fur babies!! read more

I will say that a few times I visited this location, staff was very helpful when the staff was younger and in their previous store. They seemed to have hired more individuals my age and older and the service is terrible. My last visit I sat at the counter with my child in my arms and my excited bull breed dog in the other, waiting 6 minutes to check out while I watched one cashier help a customer checkout and the other customer take a phone call and simply ignore me to take the call. As if the person on the phone couldn't hold? Your ready to pay customer just doesn't matter right? Terrible customer service. On top of that, I am a raw feeder. This was a location that we purchased man many pounds of frozen green tripe from. They've suddenly stopped carrying it. Been about 2 months now they've stopped, citing "packaging issues", none the less this ended up just being a boutique shop that doesn't care to provide service or the items that the customers asked for. We spent about 100$ a month on green tripe here, we also weren't the only buyers as this stuff was always or near out of stock every time we went. So if you want bad service, expensive boutique pet item prices, go here. If you want to aimlessly walk around the store and not even get asked if you're finding everything ok, go here. I will gladly not be returning, you don't have a core product of what many of us raw feeds need and you definitely don't provide an environment that wants loyal customers. read more

Would never return to this place. Or any Brookside Barkery for that matter!! They literally charged me for services that were not even completed. First off scheduled a full groom which is supposed to take 1hr. I was literally called to pick up my pup 40 min from dropping him off. I also scheduled the works so this should have been just over a hour with the services selected. When I arrived they lied and said that the services were completed when I questioned how everything went. The fact that they were done with everything supposedly in 40 minutes had me skeptical. Got out to the car after paying and throughly checked over my pup. His nails were not even completed (A Service I Paid For). His ears were still dirty which was the main reason we took him in that day. He also definitely did not have the complete wash and de shed!!! SMH! So I went back in to figure out what happened and initially they had assured me that all the services I paid for were completed. So I explained that there was no way possible and told them about the dirty ears and the nails not being completed. I was then told that the works package did not include nail dremal as you can see in the pic it absolutely does. I usually go to the Brookside location which is hands down more trustworthy than the individuals at this location. So I demanded that I was refunded the money for the services that were not completed. I also began to let them know that this was completely unacceptable and that ppl put a lot of trust when leaving the dogs in the care of others. They then texted the individual who supposedly groom my pup and their response was "Oh the Groomer said she had a difficult time cleaning the ears and nails." Well what else happened that I don't know about?? Even if that was the case why would you just lie and say that everything was done. I knew this was just them trying to cover up because for the last year that my pup has gone to the Brookside location they have never had one issue completing services. Even the card they give you at the end that states how your pup did was always nothing but glowing reviews. This location didn't even provide one, not surprised at all. I would highly recommend against doing business with this place and trusting this with your best friend.. Really sucks that there are still ppl out there that just straight lie to your face.If they can lie about services rendered then I'm sure they will lie about anything else. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE IF YOU LOVE YOUR PUP!!!! It is not a trustworthy place to do business. Pic on the bottom shows their call @ 1:40pm when I dropped my pup off at 1pm for his appointment. The 4 star rating completely underestimates the greatness of this place. I can barely express how pleased I was with the entire experience I had there. But I'll try anyway. There are positives and a couple of small negatives that influenced my rating. THE POSITIVES The Barkery is in a strip mall off of Woods Chapel Rd, in a nice area of Lee's Summit. I took my 3 year old spoiled rotten beagle, Gabby, in to get a bath and just check out the place I had read about in metropet magazine. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by a nice and helpful, but in my opinion, a little excessively perky woman, who answered my questions about the self-serve baths. Just for my own curiosity, i did ask about full service grooming too, which, was a tad bit expensive for me. I went ahead and decided to do the self service bath. Their bathing and grooming area is great! They have the same kind of tubs that groomers have and they use hydrosurge products and plumbing(I liken this to being like a low pressure power washer, the soap comes out in the sprayer instead of slathering it on your pooch) and it smells really good and helps my dog's dry skin. All the grooming products are included in one flat rate when you bathe your dog, and in addition to the shampoo, they have cool dryers, clippers, brushes, and even doggie perfume and mouthwash all out for your use! In addition to the bathing area, they sell all natural dog food and homemade dog cookies and treats. Gabby loves the snickerpoodles and the pumpkin flavored cookies. They love dogs and I love going up there. THE NEGATIVES The staff there will treat you like you have never bathed a dog before if it's your first time in there, so be warned. They do have good intentions though. The bathing area is a bit cramped, which can be somewhat annoying when there is more than a few people bathing their dogs. They price their self-service baths by weight of your dog, and it costs about $20 for me to wash my beagle, which is about the same amount it costs to have a bath and nail clip done at petsmart, letting the groomer do the work. All in all, I am in love with the Barkery and will be going back again and again read more

I give this place 3 bones! The place is cool with lots of different kinds of pet foods you won't find in places like PetCo or PetSmart. They have dry food, canned food and even some frozen items! The Lee's Summit location is small, but fits my needs just fine. I have never taken advantage of their grooming facilities, but they always look clean and the staff is always super friendly. The Brookside location is much larger, and offers what seems like a better selection of everything pet related! I can't put my paws on why I can't give Brookside Barkery a 4-bone rating, but I sincerely like taking my dog, Hefner, there. I'm a repeat customer, and I think that probably means more than any rating I could give. read more

I even found the exact harness that I had researched and planned to order online. Their prices beat those of the online suppliers that I have shopping. I am happy to support a local business any day! I absolutely love Brookside, especially since it's less than a minute from my house. I'm up there quite frequently and all of the employees are very knowledgeable and super nice! They have a great variety of dog food, and the biggest selection of raw/ dehydrated dog food I've seen. What I feed my dog is super important to me, there's no other pet stores that have as much premium dog food with ingredients you can actually pronounce. Their food and most of the items they sell are natural, so the prices are more expensive but their items are better quality. Their services are also great! I've really got nothing bad to say about Brookside, I love it and my dog loves it as well! read more

The Barkery has a wide selection all natural wet and dry cat food too. They have worked with us several times to find food that our cats will like even giving us samples to try before buying a large amount. We dont visit the dog side of the store but they seem to have a large selection as well. This location and the Brookside location are just wonderful. read more

They assisted with finding our regular treats and suggesting a few new items that our pup would enjoy. In early 2010, I had an awful experience with a groomer... we're talking (almost) lawsuit proportions! ... but Brookside Barkery redeemed the words PROFESSIONAL DOG GROOMERS when I walked in to their dog-treat littered, super friendly store in Lee's Summit. These gals share their love of animals freely. Folks, this isn't a dog haven, it's a doggie HEAVEN! For example, they realize first-timers need a bit more attention to settle their fears so they didn't rush my baby to accept the new experience, but instead (to my total surprise and appreciation), they walked her leisurely around the store a bit to allow her to get familiar with the surroundings and new smells until she was comfortable. WOW, you've gotta be kidding me!? A groomer that REALLY cares? YES! And their facilities are clean, their retail goods are well stocked, and their grooming services are A-1... right down to the complimentary doggie treat at the end of each service. Needless to say, I've trusted them for two years to 'spoil' my Schnoodle (a/k/a the third love of my life -- behind daughter/husband). Beware of Brookside Barkery! I was a loyal customer for years until I took my dog there for a self serve bath and the next day had to take her to the vet because she'd contracted some weird doggie flu with a 104 fever. This set me back about $250. I called the owner to tell her I thought my dog had gotten sick from her facility because she hadn't been anywhere else but home. Also when I was brushing her with one of Brookside's brushes, I pricked my finger on one of the bristles and realized one of the plastic coverings had come off and was probably scratching my dog. It also didn't seem very clean that day because they were really busy and the water was cold. Well the owner denied all accusations and said there was no way my dog got sick there which I know she did. Needless to say I will never return. I may have tried it again if the owner had been more sympathetic but she acted like she really didn't care. You will take your chances at Brookside Barkery. Just sayin... read more

I decided to checkout this facility's DIY dog bathing area. They only had two tubs and the area was not well ventilated. More than that, I was harassed by the staff about what I feed my dog and had samples of the food they peddle shoved into my hands. I will take a veterinarian's recommendation any day over a bandwagon fanatic; especially those who hound and are condescending to their customers. Additionally my dog was whisked away from me by the staff who wanted to hold him and let him lick them; they did not so much as ask. Overall, professionalism and common decency are completely lacking at this store. I will not be returning. read more

I decided to have my dog groomed by Daphny at Brookside Barkery in Lee's Summit. My appointment was at 7:30. I arrived early and waited in the parking lot for 20 minutes. Finally, at 7:40 Daphny drove up. She unlocked the door and turned on the lights, she was rushing around to open the cash register and get organized. I waited until she put her two dogs in their crates, she came back and asked for my grooming instructions which she wrote down. I emphasized that she should not cut the 2" long tuft of white hair at the tip of my dog's tail, I thought it made her look adorable and unique. She called me a couple hours later when my dog was ready to be picked up. You don't get to see your dog before you pay, the manager said it's easier that way. So I paid the cashier and included a tip. Then my dog came out --- her long white tuft of hair was cut COMPLETELY off! I was very upset. Daphne made excuses for why she did it and then she finally apologized. There were other customers in the store so I left, not wanting to make a scene. Every time I looked at my dog I got upset all over again. Later that afternoon I called and asked to speak with the manager. A lady answered the phone, she did not give her name, I asked to speak with a manager. The lady said "If you are calling about the hair I cut off your dog's tail, I'll take $10 off your next grooming". I asked her her name. I told Daphny that I would rather be compensated for the grooming I just had and I didn't think I would be coming back. I tried to talk to her but she talked over me loudly. Then she said "I WILL REFUND YOUR MONEY WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU CAN NOT COME BACK HERE AGAIN FOR GROOMING SERVICES." I did not ask for nor did I expect a full refund and I was shocked that I was being banned from services at their store because Daphny didn't follow instructions. I would probably have given her another chance but now I'll have to find someplace else to take my dog. Then Toby, the manager came on the phone. He was professional and polite and said he would talk to the owner, he confirmed that he would refund my credit card and that I could not come back. He suggested I go to their other store in Brookside, 30 minutes from where I live. I would like to go back there to buy my dog food and other pet supplies but now it will be VERY awkward. read more
