One boat seats up to 4 people; two peddlers in the front and two riders in the back. The boats are equipped with a sun shade (thank goodness - it can get hot out there on the open water!) and a simple steering stick in the middle. The boat isn't hard to operate; just pedal forwards or backwards and use the stick to direct the boat. A word of caution: wear waterproof shoes! The space for the pedals can fill with water, and our feet definitely got wet. Our pedals were also a little on the rusty side, and mine squeaked angrily the whole ride. The views are fun from the center of the lake. You can see all around the park, including the central fountain and the iconic Pioneer Memorial Obelisk. Lots of geese, ducks, and turtles in the water. The geese like to come up to the boats, and there was even one or two that wanted to greet us on the way in.

Nice long hike and bike trail that stretches for miles along the Brays Bayou. Easy to access the…read moreroad that winds through Meyerland to the Medical Center to Hermann Park and beyond. Still a lot of construction and there are multiple closures along the trail, but the completed paved sections are smooth, open and wide. Much safer to be able to go under bridges to avoid crossing major intersections. Need a break? Lots of park benches along the way. Thirsty? The new water bottle refill stations are strategically positioned. Don't have a bike? Look for the hourly rental stations available. The trail has detention capacity that has been expanded after Hurricane Harvey that will hopefully decrease the risk of flooding to homes and property along the bayou. Nice to see so many birds, like herons, cormorants, egrets and ducks, enjoying the water along the trail. Perfect for a long bike ride on a sunny weekend.

He walks you through everything, how to read the water, how to set the hook properly, and most importantly how to actually land these prehistoric fish. You can tell he's passionate about what he does and genuinely wants you to succeed. What stood out just as much as the fishing was Alex himself. He's just a really good human. He shares stories, connects with you, and makes the whole experience feel personal. By the end of the trip it feels less like you hired a guide and more like you spent the day fishing with a friend. And then there's the gar. I landed a 6 ft alligator gar, and I can honestly say it was one of the most intense battles of my life. It's not just fishing, it's a full-on adrenaline experience. These fish are powerful, smart, and put up a fight you won't forget. Alex coached me through the entire process, from the bite to the final landing, and made sure it was done safely for both me and the fish. What really sets this trip apart is how unique it is. Every year my friends do the Buffalo Bayou Regatta, every year I happen to be busy, and every year…read morethey brag about how much fun they had and I get totally jealous and promise myself that I'll do the next one. This was the year that I finally made time to race the Regatta and I'm so glad I did. Thank you, Yelp and the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, for the complimentary entries! We raced in the mixed recreational canoe division and things were CRAZY at the start. You're not allowed to put your boat in the bayou until the horn sounds, so we tied our canoe to a tree on a super steep, muddy bank and slid it down as quickly as we could. We were immediately thrown into a chaotic mass of canoes, but we managed to work our way out of the crowd and start paddling. A few seconds later, we hit another canoe that was having trouble staying straight, flipped over, and plunged into the dirty bayou water with our seventy pound canoe on top of us. Not the greatest feeling, and it took us some time to get the water out and flip the canoe back over, but we laughed about it the whole day. During the fifteen mile paddle down the bayou, it's easy to forget that you're in Houston until you pass under familiar streets and restaurants like Brenner's on the Bayou. We had a blast even once it started raining. There were slow paddlers, competitive paddlers, and paddlers in costumes, but almost everyone had one thing in common: they were grinning from ear to ear. There was a live band at the finish, free food and St. Arnold's beer, and shuttles to get back to the start. The prizes (three deep per division) were awesome and unique. Our dip in the bayou cost us about ten minutes so we ended up placing fifth, but next year we'll be out to win. Tip: It's a good idea to have a second car at the finish with dry clothes inside so you can stay and enjoy the festivities in comfort.
