Normally, I don't enjoy being the guinea pig for a new operation, but in recent years I've been on a mission to find the country's best Detroit-style pizza. When I see one, resistance is futile. To be clear, there isn't much about the storefront, interior, or overall vibe that would pull you in. This is very much a takeout-focused spot, and that's perfectly fine because the food does all the talking. I ordered the Hot Honey Pepperoni, a pizza I've eaten in more cities than I can count. It's become one of my benchmarks for Detroit-style pizza, and Fresh Bite's version belongs in the conversation with some of the best I've had anywhere. The crust delivers that ideal combination of crispy and chewy, the sauce has great flavor, and the cheese melts beautifully into every corner of the pie. My only criticism is the hot honey itself. It leaned much more sweet than hot. Most places use Mike's Hot Honey, which strikes a more balanced ratio between heat and sweetness. I'm not sure what brand Fresh Bite is using, but I found myself wishing for a little more kick. Still, that's a minor complaint. This is a damn good Detroit-style pizza and, quite frankly, better than any I've had in Detroit itself. State College has a little gem on its hands.

That is not something you come across everyday and I was very happy to pee in a clean bathroom, especially after a few hours at the stadium :-) I noticed that this rather small town has a large number of pizza places so I am happy that we chose to eat at Maria's .
