I came to him prior to my wedding for an onslaught of needs, and he talked me through the process and was incredibly professional, and while parts of the wax were painful (I don't typically wax), he was really good at communicating what to expect and talking me through it. I recently moved to Arlington and have been searching for a great place for brows. I tried a threading place near my house and they took a chunk out of my right brow. The worst! I waited several months for it to grow back and did a ton of research for a place I could trust. By far, Willie had the best reviews. He did an AMAZING job shaping my messy brows. I had an allergic reaction (maybe to the wax) and he took care of it without me asking by adding some cream to take down the swelling and even put makeup on so I didn't have to leave with my skin bright red! Believe the hype. Willie is incredibly talented. I've tried about ten places in DC for brow waxing/shaping/tinting and am kinda like overly particular with how I like my brows to look. Some places don't quite listen to what you want, and I usually end up with some overplucking issues. Willie listens closely to what you want. Got the facial extraction and I am very satisfied with the results. What I liked: Willie was very pleasant and accommodating, he did not rush at all and made sure the steam, enzymes, etc stayed on my face for a while to prepare for extractions. He speaks fluent English and understands skin at a biological level so he's knowledgeable about various skin types and conditions and he's able to give good recommendations about skin care. That beats many estheticians who cannot communicate due to a barrier and most dermatologists who immediately put you on their standard tier of prescription treatments until one of them seems to work--while possibly destroying your liver or gut flora. The extraction marks took 5-6 days to disappear (probably because I had blackheads that were as old as me) but they looked like freckles so that wasn't an issue. My skin feels, and looks like it can finally breathe and properly absorb moisturizers. Most importantly, my skin is cleaner than ever, and it has a healthy vibrant glow to it rather than the shine of unabsorbed layer of lotion. ATTENTION: I have found the best brow place in DC! I found about Browbeat Beauty through Yelp and made my appointment online about a week before I actually went in. I was surprised at the limited availability when I booked my appointment, but now that I have gone, I understand why. The location was accessible from the metro and easy to find. Willie's suite is inside the Phenix Salon Suites (next to Xfinity). I arrived a little early and waited 5 minutes for Willie to finish with another client. We started right at 2:30 pm. He first asked me what I wanted for my eyebrows, I told him, and he got to work. He waxed my eyebrows and lip and went back through my eyebrows with tweezers and who knows what else because it took a while but they looked amazing! He also filled them in and took his time. My eyebrows look great and we have a plan to let my eyebrows grow in more fully. I highly recommend Willie. Yes, it's a bit pricey and more than I am used to paying but he's the real deal and you get what you pay for. He spent exactly 30 minutes on my eyebrows and took his time. Definitely worth the money I paid. The only thing I would suggest for improvement is the website. THIS REVIEW IS ONLY FOR THE EYEBROW SHAPING SERVICE I'm not sure why I had a one-off experience here, or if he was just having a bad day, but its inexcusable. I wish I felt the same way everyone else did, but unfortunately I dont. Yes Willie is really nice, but the way he approached my eyebrow shaping was just all wrong. It took my a while to come back and write this review. I had just moved to DC from Miami, and based on the rave reviews on Yelp, I decided to give browbeat a try. I was expecting a consultation, some questions asked about shapes, likes, dislikes, allergies etc. and a FACE TRANSFORMING shaping, what I got was the other extreme. I came to him with sexy full eyebrows (check out my review on BrowRehab in Miami), so all I really needed was a little clean-up removing the fuzzies but the shape was still looking good. There were honestly tell-tale signs from the start, that it wasn't going to go well. He tells me to sit down on the bed, I do. 30 seconds later he sits behind me and gets to work. He didnt really look at me, didn't inspect my brows, and didn't even ask me any questions about how I liked my brows before he started, so I thought I'd comment and said "I really just need a little clean-up", he gave me an 'um-hm' like he got it from there, and continued working. So the first thing I note is he's doing my brows from behind me, upside down. I've never had anyone do my brows entirely upside down in the 15 years I've shaped them professionally, people work from different angles moving around. Don't you want to see my face right-way-up too?! He continues and doesn't talk to me about my shape at all while he worked, it was just completely like his mind was somewhere else and he was just going through the motions. So I ask "what do you think of their current shape", and he says "shape is good" and carries on. I still thought he 'got it' and we moved on...after that we had small talk, but nothing related to the process going on with my brows at all. He never once stopped to show me progress, ask me if iI like what I see, nothing, zilch, nada!!! I mean Im here to get my brows done, they're my most-prized feature on my face, are we on the same page ? I should've stopped to ask- but I didn't, I went entirely on faith and reviews- STUPID!!! But a professional meeting you for the first time would have questions for you, and at the very least pause to show you progress and get approval before moving on. I was panicking a little, but I didnt feel any pain, or much plucking so it felt like he was doing a very slow, careful, meticulous job, I just couldn't tell how much hair was being removed at all. About 25 mins later, he hands me a mirror....and OMG, my brows were HALF the fullness I entered his salon with. I went from full and sexy, to a surprised 'in-shock constantly' look and it aged me ! I didnt really know what to make of it when I looked at myself, I was in shock, but what would I really say at this point....um besides thank you?!! I'd been re-habbing my brows for years to gorgeous fullness, and in half an hour they were butchered into high-arched thin brows. Talk about the 90s. I did contact him back to say I was unhappy with the results after living with them for 2 days, and to his credit he was responsive and disappointed also. But it was a little too late for that unfortunately. I'm picky and I know exactly what shape suits me, I was also a first-time client and he just got to work and handed me a mirror at the end. Not an approach I like, it shows carelessness and lack of interest in your customer's preferences and personality. I'm still re-habbing them 8 months on and it's a very stressful journey- anyone trying to regrow their brows would know. Some gaps just don't seem to want to grow back. Because of my personal experience, I just can't recommend him to others. If you do decide to go, make sure you tell him exactly what you expect. because he didn't seem to think I had an opinion on my brows. Its unfortunate really. Willie is hands down one of the BEST in his field. I've had 3 different services-- acne facial, brow arching, and Brazilian. Brow- Before going to Willie, I was getting my brows threaded by the brow threading factory in DuPont Circle. I was a loyal customer there for nearly 4 years. After my last appointment (5 minutes long) I thought I need to find a place that actually takes some time arch my brows. Thanks to Yelp, I found Willie. It took some time to get on the calendar, but the wait was absolutely worth it. He took his time to make sure my brows were perfect. I am so in love with my brows. I made the dreaded mistake of going back to the aforementioned threading factory for a touch up. The woman who did my brows took 2 minutes on each brow. I cried in the inside because I felt like I cheated on Willie for a cheap quickie. Never again. After my brows grew back, I went back to Willie. Acne Facial- I had a very stubborn pimple on my cheek for over 6 months. I tried everything to decimate it. Nothing seemed to work. After reading a Yelpers review about Willie's acne treatment, I thought why not. Willie used use magical powers (details are on his website) and my pimple disappeared. I was amazed and still am. I was worried that I would have an acne scar after the treatment but there was none. THANK YOU! Brazilian-- On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most painful, my Brazilian with Willie was a 3/4. I kept waiting for a gush a pain, but nope. I was so pleasantly surprised. I wanted to laugh a little because my last experience was off the charts painful. Yes, I let a man wax my junk in his den. Yes, I realize this is how a Lifetime movie starts. "It Happened in the Den." Willie works at a spa as well, but his house is closer to me, so I go there for all services. My brows look FLAWLESS and they area around them is never red when he's finished. He waxes and will pull out the tweezers and a light and to make sure he gets everything. He takes the time to shape the brows to your face and doesn't just breeze through. Brazilians are easy and quick and I get very few ingrowns. I'm currently his only lady client who gets them. He also does male brazilians. The facial (*snort*) was great! No redness, no breakouts, no scratches or scarring. He doesn't puuuuuuuush until the pore is clear. He does this press.press.press thing and checks that the pore is clear along the way so as not to press for nothing. You can pay and leave a tip with a CC. Willie is extremely professional and courteous (he even sent a follow up email thanking me for my business and to inquire if I was satisfied with the service). Atmosphere is relaxing, comfortable and hygenic. It truly was a consultation - he asked me about how I wanted my brows done, sensitivity to wax, allergies to medications. He uses a magnifying glass and a combination of wax, hair trimmers and tweezers. I could tell he was also measuring my brows to make sure everything was symmetrical. It was so relaxing and pleasant, I went back and had a similar treatment for my back. As a guy, I really like that I don't have to go in a salon full of women and feel out of place. browbeat caters to both men and women, and he has a full service salon studio in a room of his home. I have found my eyebrown nirvana. Seriously I am never going anywhere else again! I came here because I started getting really annoyed with the people at the nail salon. Last time when they told me my eyebrow shape was 'really difficult' was the last straw. So, I turned to yelp, found Browbeat and decided to give it a try. I saw the Yelp deal and bought that so also decided to do a facial. Because let's be honest one always needs a facial, right? :) This isn't the cheapest place to get waxing, but it is well worth the investment for the superior level of service you receive. I went to Willie yesterday to get my first-ever brazilian. I would rate myself as having a medium tolerance for pain; I'm not a baby but not a champ either. He did an extraordinary job. Willie put me completely at ease, the perfect blend of diligent and friendly. I went to Willie to have my eyebrows waxed and when he finished I thought to myself "ehh...whatever". For some reason it wasn't until the next morning that I had an epiphany and I really saw how amazing my eyebrows were. I think the reason for my initial reaction was because my eyebrows didn't stand out to me, and that's because they just "flowed" naturally with the rest of my features. And that's exactly what I wanted!!! I don't WANT my eyebrows to stand out (if that makes sense) I just want them clean and natural to compliment my features. My eyebrows were perfectly understated. They were perfect for MY face and MY eyebrow shape. And that's what's so awesome about Willie is that he tailors your brows to you. It's a pricey place, and it *is* in someone's basement, but I HIGHLY recommend Browbeat for eyebrows (and probably any other type of hair removal as well). Why? 1) Atmosphere. I've had eyebrows done at fancy places and places in the back of nail salons where the towels are stored. This place is a nice street-level apartment that is clean and nicely decorated. It's calming and soothing, and it kind of makes you feel like you're at your friend's place for something fun. 2) Skill. I've never had hair removal feel so relaxing. Willie is fantastic! I went in last week for one of his facials. Not really one to spend globs of money on cosmetic services, so wasn't sure what to expect. That turned out to be a non-issue since he explained every step as we went along. The facial that I got was for acne (damn you, humidity, for giving me blackheads!) and involved 7 different steps. Yep, seven! Within the seven steps, there were about 3 different masks. The whole facial lasted for about 1.5 hours and came to $85 total. Side note: I used the Yelp $20 off discount and tipped $15; all in all, my out-of-pocket expense only came to a total of $80. Not bad at all for a 90-minute service. As other reviewers have noted, the home-based aspect of the business was not a problem at all. His living room is large, very tastefully decorated with modern furniture/art, and feels just like the waiting area of a trendy salon. You can kind of see the kitchen area (tucked in the back) from the waiting room (aka the living room), but it didn't really bother me. The facial itself was done in a room that, again, is tastefully decorated and involves a professional spa bed. Useful info to note--I learned that Willie previously worked for Intercontinental Hotel in San Francisco doing the same services--skin care, makeup, etc. Unfortunately the small talk that unearthed this info didn't get much further since I started to drift off into zen land, what with the candles and the Enya-like instrumental music. I've booked facials with Willie several times now. He is a great aesthetician who customizes his services based on his client's individual needs. With me, he adds on anti-blemish cleansers and masks and uses this high frequency electric device to kill the remaining bacteria. He is also very thorough with extractions, which I certainly appreciate however painful. During my last facial, he even added a lip treatment because my lips had dried up so much from the winter weather. He conducts his services at his home, which is just several blocks from the Columbia Heights Metro and is immaculate, clean, and welcoming. Booked well in advance around the Christmas holidays before my incredble boyfriend took me to Austria (shameless plug for the best boyfriend ever!). My eyebrows look great. Willie is polite and the place has a good ambiance (row house with a spa like feel). It was a very relaxing experience with soothing music in an otherwise quiet room. Budget sufficient time for your appointment. It takes a while. My one and perhaps major complaint is that Willie is EXPENSIVE. I paid about $35. I've paid $12-15 in DC and had my brows look just as good at some places (but those places are few). But Browbeat is a block away from me so I figured I'd give the place a try. First, the results: I will never touch my own eyebrows again! My eyebrows are perfect in every way - perfect arch, perfect thinness, perfectly even. I have had my eyebrows wax, threaded and tweezed by many salons and/or eyebrow shops. Some were better than others but none gave me the for-my-face brows so I quit going. I'm lucky to have very full eyebrows but doing my own wasn't exactly going so well. I keep picking up my mirror to look at them because I am just unable to believe that they look so good. Second, the process: Another yelper called him meticulous, which is spot on, and perfectionist would also be a good adjective. I was tweezed (and tweezed some more) and waxed (then tweezed some more). Well, wax was used but probably 95% of what Willie did was tweeze. And absolutely none of it hurt. Also, the wax used did not feel like that goopie wax used in a lot of salons. I left with no red marks or left over wax. In fact, I couldn't even tell that I just had my brows done. Third, the service: nothing even slightly negative can be said. I completely screwed up my time but was still graciously fit in. I can't explain it but was instantly at ease when Willie answered the door. He is professional but not stoic professional. Being a non-cash carrier, I was especially pleased to pay with my debit card and be able to add tip. Fourth, the location: simple and easy. I took the metro, and Willie's home is just a short walk (maybe a block and a half?) from the Columbia Heights metro station. Bottomline: Willie has now become just as important as my hairdresser (Beth at Fiddleheads), and trust me, Beth is a fixture. read more

I purchased a bundle for a mini facial, bikini wax & eyebrow shaping. Willie is a true artist, and he is meticulous with his work. His studio is pristine, and he wears a face shield and gloves throughout the treatments. The bikini and eyebrow waxes were perfectly done, with minimal pain. The highlight was my mini facial which included a double cleanse, use of tools like a high frequency wand and gua shua, followed by an exfoliant, masks & serums. The entire appointment took about an hour and a half, and I left feeling like a new woman. I've seen Willie a few times now for brow/lash tinting, brow waxing, and Brazilian waxing--every time was great. The place is very clean and inviting and Willie is the utmost professional, especially as Brazilian waxing is not necessarily the most fun thing in the world. Despite that, he handles it like a pro and gets the job done as quickly and painlessly as possible. As for the brow/lash tinting, Willie is the first person in DC I've found that I've trusted to do it (after having it done in San Francisco a couple years ago). Willie's done it twice for me now and both times have been great--no problems with the application and the results are just what I wanted. You will not find better in DC! I've been going to Willie for over a year, and he is consistently great. He is extremely professional, personable and efficient. He does a fantastic job with my brows. I went somewhere once while he was on vacation: NEVER AGAIN! When he has done my lip and chin, he is extremely meticulous about getting everything: even tweezing the extras as necessary. His new location at Rhode Island is super convenient to the Red line: I'm able to go over my lunch break and still make it back to work with time to spare. I send my friends here whenever I can. I've had the "browchitecture" and Management facial with Willie. He is a professional and is incredibly thorough. I'm pretty low maintenance, so I'm very happy that after his brow shaping service I won't need to return again, as long as I follow the lines he created. They look much more symmetrical than I could have done on my own and he even applied some cover up at the end to hide the inevitable redness. The facial was truly the best that I've ever received. It was customized to my personal skin woes and concerns that we addressed together going into the appointment. On top of that, he gave me tips and suggestions without pushing any products he sells, which I respect. He asked some questions throughout to better guide his service, but wasn't overly chatty, which can be a pet peeve of mine. He was also was very willing to answer my questions. My skin looks incredible and I look forward to incorporating his service into my routine. Thank you, Willie! Willie worked wonders on my brows! I went to him to get my brows tinted for the first time. I was a little nervous but they look AMAZING. I've been using brow pencils for about a year but this looks way more natural. They also look so much thicker now that they are dark! The process only took about 20 minutes and the room was very clean and relaxing. Bottom line - I never knew my brows could be so thick and shapely with no makeup! I will definitely go back. I was a little nervous about getting my brows waxed. I had already had one bad experience in DC and a second mediocre one. I'm from LA and I had basically been getting my brows done back there because I could not find anyone here. I thought Willie did a good job! My arches felt a little overtweezed, and I said so, but my brows are symmetrical (no small feat with my brows, let me tell you), groomed and a day or two in I really fell in love with the work he did.
