It's rare to find someone who understands my hair's texture and can use the right techniques to get it to curl correctly - especially in Bethesda where everyone wears their hair straight. I have shown up twice with challenging hair and both times I left with much healthier and better looking hair. They had to cut it shorter than I liked but of course they were right. It's a really talented team of stylists and I would highly recommend. My only con is that I'm not sure I saw long term changes from the upgrades they encouraged me to get. On Mother's Day, May 12th, I walked into BlueBell Salon with a crushed spirit and hair that was baring the brunt of my deep sadness, stress, and recent tragedy. Only here in Bethesda visiting family due to my husband being deployed overseas and currently experiencing pregnancy loss of our first baby-- so, had no idea what to expect from this Salon or the stylist I had hand selected from their website through my tears, due solely because her face looked so kind. Nelo was precious. She helped me with more than just my hair. She treated me with gentleness, affection, and care from start to finish. She expertly recommended 2 key treatments that revived my dull and brittle hair beyond what I ever thought was possible. She also worked with me to decide on the perfect hair style that not only totally revived my hair, but brightened my sad face, aligned exactly with what I thought I wanted, and most importantly- lifted my totally broken spirit. She executed the style perfectly. I walked into Blue Bell Salon just praying I'd be able to hold back tears for the duration of my time there and walk out looking half decent. But, thanks to Nelo, I left feeling lighter in my heart, with peace, hope, joy, and a stunning haircut that literally turned heads as I walked to my car. I didn't cry a single tear when with Nelo, and to my surprise, was able to talk with her freely the whole time (my very first non family interaction since my loss), a pure testimony to her kindhearted demeanor. I had a not-so-great experience at another salon and ended up with an orange/much too blonde balayage that did not suit me...and I was too nervous to go anywhere to get it fixed. Worst salon EVER!!! Fred is an asshole, I showed him a photo of what I wanted, a previous picture of my hair. He said I can not do it. Then argued with me the whole time, didn't explain to me what he was going to do with my hair. He called me the wrong name because his staff didn't book it right and he told me I can't do your hair. I have mixed experience with this place. First off, Samira is great for eyebrows - I am a big fan of threading and was very happy with how she shaped my eyebrows. I used to go to Crystal, who has since moved on, and have always felt very happy with her. I liked the way she 'empowered' me about letting my hair grow white/grey and the first couple of haircuts she gave me were great. The very last time, it was so so. I wanted to keep my length and asked for layers. Though she usually did great, this time round I felt she cut too much 'volume' out of my lower hair, so for a couple of weeks I ended up looking like an octopus, like more hair on the head to shoulder section and it then 'frizzled /thinned out' past the shoulder. Came in recently for a blow dry on a whim with a stylist I hadn't tried before (as Crystal has moved on). I wanted natural curls /wavy look, which I have had countless times in my life. This time round I really wasn't happy with the outcome. The male stylist first off said that my hair is very difficult (when he started blow-drying) and instead of using the brush, started first straightening my hair with a curl iron, and only as a second step - once it was fully straight all around -- proceeded with curling it. I have never seen this before. First off, curling my hair with a round brush is what professionals do. It requires technique and strength. Second, even when people have done it with a curl iron, you do it in one go, not two steps.... Moreover, when I called it out, I was told my hair was difficult. It is, but that's what I go to a good professional for. I have lived with my hair + 40 years and am experienced with what it looks like. I have also had several hairdressers in my life who all did an excellent job. In addition, my stylist told me I am too young to let my hair grow grey naturally. I am not sure what to do with that comment. Deciding to go grey naturally as a woman is not easy (as many women will attest to). I have now fully embraced that decision (and loved how Crystal used to empower me). I don't think it should be up to a male stylist to tell me that, especially since I did not come in for colour advice. I just wanted a blow dry. read more

Excellent blow dry service by CrystaI, who understood and delivered the look I wanted based on the photo I show to every stylist I have tried. This was my first time and I will definitely go back! I was referred to her by two friends whose hair is always impressive and looks healthy. My ethnic hair is natural, mixed gray and without chemicals, and I go to a salon biweekly at a minimum. Crystal uses a round brush and top of the line hair products; she only used flat iron heat gently around my hairline. I left confident and was photo, event, and business meeting ready when I walked out; did not have to wait for too tight curls to fall into the look I wanted. She also understands hair health and told me I only needed conditioning and hydration, not a cut or trim; at my most recent salon I was told my hair was in bad shape and I needed to have 3" cut off! At previous salon, my hair lost about 3" in length over the course of a year without having a trim or cut and that stylist told me the ends of my grey hair were yellowing probably due to the sun. Having lived for 8 years in the blazing NM sun with long healthy hair, I knew that was not the case, looked back at photos over that timeframe and concluded that my hair was breaking off due to too much heat being applied. I am willing to drive the longer distance and pay a higher price to have confidence in my stylist and know my hair health and appearance are priority. I believe and hope time will prove that I have found my forever hairstylist in Crystal. read more

I was looking for a place with a certified Cezanne beautician who knew what they were doing, and I found one after months of looking!!! Neelo is excellent! AND - Blue Bell salon is excellent in every regard. People are very nice, helpful, dedicated and skilled. From the receptionist to the owner, there is an ethic of kindness and competence. Neelo did my hair and she was incredibly meticulous about the complicated procedure for doing a proper Cezanne smoothing. I've had it done four times now, and the last time it did not take after spending $300. She was so careful, she coached the shampoo woman on how to shampoo my hair correctly so the process would take. The hair has to be cleaned so well that the natural ingredients will bond with the hair shaft. It turned out to be one of the best experiences I have ever had in a salon. Everyone was very professional but also with an attitude of caring. And....Everyone was working so hard - including the owner who had multiple clients in the chair next to Neelo's. My hair does not do well in humidity and I scheduled a shampoo and blow out with Fred online when I realized the weather would be showers for the weekend. I easily scheduled a consultation online via the website. Consultation was good - we looked at some photos, decided on a style, and scheduled for that coming weekend. On the morning of the event my appointment started on time no waiting. Niana styled my hair just like I wanted within an hour (no easy task there was a blowout and a lot of pinning and teasing involved), it stayed in place all day and evening, and it looked fantastic!
