I love Katus and this is my favourite place to get it! This cozy spot has amazing food and super kind staff. My favourite item to get is the cheese stick katsu, which has a good ratio of cheese and pork. Fried to be perfectly crispy and somehow not too oily, each bite is amazing. The brown sauce and cranberry sauce compliments it perfectly, and I personally enjoy the cranberry sauce as a pallet cleanser. Each katsu comes with a side of rice, corn and salad, which complement the katsu greatly. The Brown Katsu is also very good, extremely crispy and not oily at all. This one comes with 2 bug pieces of katsu and could be easily shared if you're light eaters. The brown sauce and sides (rice, corn, salad), also complement this katsu. I went on a weekday evening and it was still packed, so make sure to go early to get a spot, as they fill up quickly. But the staff were super friendly and served us quickly. The brown sauce and tartar sauce is served on the side so that the katsu doesn't become soggy. I sneaked a couple pieces of pork katsu and it was great also. Amazing value for money. We all ordered one dish and ended up packing half of each dish home because we were so full. Worth it! For appetizer, my brother and I tried their fried shrimp which was extra crispy tempura complimented by their tartar sauce. Their tartar sauce was the nicest balance between the rich creaminess of the mayonnaise and sourness of the lime/lemon. I loved this combination! Based on other reviews regarding the large portion sizes of their katsu, I decided to share the teri pork katsu with my brother. It came with two generous pieces of katsu, their original brown katsu sauce (which was warm and delicious!), drizzled with mayonnaise and sprinkled with dried bonito flakes. This katsu set also came with rice and refillable corn and cabbage (with a mayo based sauce). I ordered an extra rice on the side. The katsu was hot, crispy, and delicious and it was so good with their katsu sauce. The corn wasn't anything special and the cabbage was a bit too heavy with the mayo based dressing (compared to a vinaigrette dressing like at Katsuya). However, once in a while, this dish is a treat. One katsu order could definitely fill up two people as it did for us. I also brought some leftovers home! They have 5 tables and one of their tables is squished in between a corner and another table. We were initially seated there but I asked to move to another seat which they accommodated fine. I feel that table should be removed or the seating arrangement be modified so that patrons sitting in that seat won't feel too awkward and confined sitting so closely to another table. Katsuya (Japanese) and Brown Donkatsu (Korean) are a 2 minute walk from each other. After trying Brown's for the first time up at First Markham Place this place has quickly become one of my favorite spots. So happy they finally opened up a location here in North York as well. Every time I passed by it was super busy and I'm glad I finally was able to order it for take out. I ordered the combo katsu with pork loin, this comes with a side of shredded cabbage/dressing, corn salad, rice, two katsu loins and a white sauce (carbonara - like) and a red sauce (tomato based - like) I had it regular spice which was like a shin ramen level of spice (that's what the lady on the phone discribed it like). I absolutely love their coating on the loin, super crispy and crunch, nice and golden texture and best of all it was not dry. It does taste a bit bland on it's own but that's why the sauces are there! The sauces are amazing, creamy white sauce paired with a nice amount of heat in the red sauce which also had a hint of sweetness to it. Portions pretty big! The combo chicken katsu and cheese stick katsu were both very good. We got level 2 spicy - but found that it was not as spicy as we expected. A friend told me to visit this restaurant for a nice Katsu meal with a Korean twist. Parking was a bit tough but then noticed plenty of parking across the street. The place was small and packed. Servers were very pleasant, polite and courteous. It reminded me of a small eatery in downtown Osaka, close to my hometown. No frills, just good food! My friend ordered the Katsu curry and I ordered the Shrimp & Chicken Katsu. Honestly, the portions were so generous, we could have ordered and shared a meal as we both left with doggy bags. The food was fresh, seasoned well and extremely tasty. Unlike other katsu resuatrants we have frequented, especially one within close proximilty of this restaurant, the food was not greasy. While speaking with the owner, we were advised that the secret for the crunchy non-greasy katsu was their coating which they make by baking their bread inhouse. We were impressed! Prices were very reasonable, servers were polite and the place was very clean albeit devoid of any frills or fancy setting. The owner, I was told is focused on the quality and portion of the food instead of fancy settings. Only downside is the place is small so it could be a bit of a wait to get your table. The curry was the stand out part of the meal: really unique and super tasty! I ordered the cheese bomb and it was a lot of food for me, I was only able to finish half of it but my friends gladly ate the rest! The difference between the Cheese Bomb and Cheese Stick is that the Cheese Bomb is a regular tonkatsu stuffed full of cheese, whereas the Cheese Stick is like little boats of pork tonkatsu filled with cheese. The curry is slathered onto the cheese bomb dish, whereas you get to dip the tonkatsu into the curry for the Cheese Stick, so that the crispy texture is preserved throughout your meal. Cheese Stick also seemed to have a greater meat to cheese ratio compared to the Cheese Bomb, which is more cheese than meat. The Cheese Stick also comes with a sweet and tangy cranberry dipping sauce for a refreshing break in between the rich bites. I feel like I should have ordered the cheese stick because I felt like the katsu was way better before the curry made it soggy. I'm glad my friend let me try some of their Cheese Stick so that I could experience both dishes! However, next time I would probably order just the regular curry katsu because I feel like the crazy amount of cheese kind of took over the meal and I want to taste that curry by itself some more!
